Her love, Herman, arrives after dark with a wedding cake—a symbol of their decade long commitment and secret vows to one another. Unable to legally marry, these star-crossed lovers—one black, one white—live in constant
fear of arrest or worse. The rules that govern society don’t govern the heart, and Julia and Herman risk safety and security for love. Will the price be more than they can bear? Written in 1972, this passionate classic stirs the heart and proves searingly relevant as race takes center stage in American politics.

BY ROGER GUENVEUR SMITH JANUARY 25 THROUGH 28, 2018 Part of the Claude Edison Purdy Festival –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Two hundred years ago Frederick Douglass was born into slavery. Likely the son of his slavemaster, Douglass liberated himself at twenty years old and began a new life using his exceptional skills as an orator, writer, journalist, and politician to fight for the abolition of slavery, women’s suffrage, and an end to racial discrimination. He died arguably the most recognized abolitionist in the world. In this poetic remix, acclaimed artist Roger Guenveur Smith lifts up the legacy of this great man, weaving his story through a modern constellation of American power, politics, and promise.

PROTEST, POETRY AND THE POLITICS OF LOVE. THIS BITTER EARTH
–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Neil is a handsome, wealthy white man who is a passionate advocate for civil rights. Jesse is an introspective black playwright coming to terms with his own activism. As racial tensions mount with the extrajudicial killings of black men throughout the country, the young couple is forced to contend with the politics of their love. Written poetically by Harrison David Rivers, this timely story is a haunting reminder of the strength it takes to love outloud.

How do we come to terms with race? For some it’s a struggle, for others it’s simply a fact, and some never think about it at all. How do our racial and ethnic identities inform our values, perceptions, and beliefs? How do we ensure that our children develop a positive racial identity? Join us for a conversation about how we learn to know ourselves through race.
Today, approximately 40 percent of adoptions in America are transracial—and that number is growing. In decades past, adoptive parents were encouraged to raise their children as though race didn’t matter; today acknowledging difference is encouraged. While some advocates of transracial adoption believe the practice makes America increasingly “colorblind,” others strongly object to a practice that pulls apart ancestral families and identities. Join us as we explore the personal stories, policies, and politics of transracial adoption.

An open letter to America. 108 minutes, 2014 MONDAY MAY 7, 2018 AT 7PM In Justin Simien’s writer-director debut, a college student named Sam gets real on the radio about the subtle, pervasive racism in the United States. “Dear white people,” Sam begins, before talking about the myriad ways white folks try to appropriate or condescend black culture, from the way they use words like “thang” to the way an acquaintance of hers is dating a black guy as an apparent act of social rebellion. But how down is Sam? Is this really her behind the mic, or is she playing a part, too?

Penumbra’s Let’s Talk Series creates space for compassionate and challenging conversations around issues of social justice, equity, and the arts. Hosted by Sarah Bellamy, the event begins at 6:00pm with refreshments and light bites, followed by a 90-minute presentation and discussion.
REEL TALK
Join us for film screenings followed by provocative discussion about the themes. REEL Talk is free, but reservations are required. Each event begins at 7:00pm.
