Wedding ALICE CHILDRESS’

Band A LOVE/HATE STORY IN BLACK AND WHITE DIRECTED BY LOU BELLAMY

CAN LOVE SURVIVE IN A HOSTILE WORLD?

OCTOBER 19 THROUGH NOVEMBER 12, 2017

WEDDING BAND

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– In a small South Carolina town by the sea, Julia keeps to herself. Her love, Herman, arrives after dark with a wedding cake—a symbol of their decade long commitment and secret vows to one another. Unable to legally marry, these star-crossed lovers—one black, one white—live in constant

fear of arrest or worse. The rules that govern society don’t govern the heart, and Julia and Herman risk safety and security for love. Will the price be more than they can bear? Written in 1972, this passionate classic stirs the heart and proves searingly relevant as race takes center stage in American politics.

BOOKEND CLASSES OCTOBER 23 AND NOVEMBER 6 AT 12:30PM Learn more about the play with other curious theatre lovers! At the first Bookend class, explore the script and gain insight into the production. Then, see the play on your own. Finally, return for the second Bookend class to enjoy a lively discussion about the issues the play illuminates. JOY REBEL

FREDERICK DOUGLASS NOW

History mixed and remixed. BY ROGER GUENVEUR SMITH JANUARY 25 THROUGH 28, 2018 Part of the Claude Edison Purdy Festival –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Two hundred years ago Frederick Douglass was born into slavery. Likely the son of his slavemaster, Douglass liberated himself at twenty years old and began a new life using his exceptional skills as an orator, writer, journalist, and politician to fight for the abolition of slavery, women’s suffrage, and an end to racial discrimination. He died arguably the most recognized abolitionist in the world. In this poetic remix, acclaimed artist Roger Guenveur Smith lifts up the legacy of this great man, weaving his story through a modern constellation of American power, politics, and promise.

“....incisive, socially trenchant…”

BY KHANISHA FOSTER DIRECTED BY LOU BELLAMY FEBRUARY 8 THROUGH 18, 2018 World Premiere Part of the Claude Edison Purdy Festival –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– As a small child she learned that her cherished grandmother loved her but condemned her parents’ interracial relationship. As a young actress she learned to play the part, even if it meant leaving parts of herself behind. Since then, Khanisha Foster has spent a lifetime refusing to color inside the lines. Join us for a candid look at what it means to find joy in the struggle to be recognized for all of who we are. As racial tensions mount with the extrajudicial killings of black men throughout the country, the young couple is forced to contend with the politics of their love. Penumbra’s Let’s Talk Series creates space for compassionate and challenging conversations around issues of social justice, equity, and the arts. Hosted by Sarah Bellamy, the event begins at 6pm with refreshments and light bites, followed by a 90-minute presentation and discussion.

RACIAL IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT

TRANSRACIAL ADOPTION

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

How do we come to terms with race? For some it’s a struggle, for others it’s simply a fact, and some never think about it at all. How do our racial and ethnic identities inform our values, perceptions, and beliefs? How do we ensure that our children develop a positive racial identity? Join us for a conversation about how we learn to know ourselves through race.

Today, approximately 40 percent of adoptions in America are transracial—and that number is growing. In decades past, adoptive parents were encouraged to raise their children as though race didn’t matter; today acknowledging difference is encouraged. While some advocates of transracial adoption believe the practice makes America increasingly “colorblind,” others strongly object to a practice that pulls apart ancestral families and identities. Join us as we explore the personal stories, policies, and politics of transracial adoption.

MY AMERICA

COLORBLIND CASTING

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Increasing racial violence. Gender parity dismissed. Rising class warfare. Newly gained ground for same sex couples and trans safety threatened. Immigrant status insecure. Mosques, synagogues, and sacred burial grounds desecrated. Is this the America we want for ourselves and our families? Our nation is at a critical crossroads. What can we do? Join us as we imagine the future for our country and chart a path of action forward together with compassion and courage.

Can we really look past race? When actors of color are cast in roles traditionally reserved for whites, does the story change? Is it ever okay to cast a white actor in a role intended for a person of color? Advocates of colorblind casting claim increased diversity on American stages. Critics see a dangerous rewriting of history. Join us for a conversation with directors, actors, and critics about the politics of colorblind casting.

Law vs. love. 123 minutes, 2016 MONDAY OCTOBER 30, 2017 AT 7PM

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton star in this intimate portrayal of real life couple Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple who were sentenced to prison in Virginia in 1958 for getting married. Exiled to Washington, D.C., they decided to sue the state of Virginia leading to the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision that laws prohibiting interracial marriage are unconstitutional.

ONE DROP RULE

Shades of self. 45 minutes, 2001 MONDAY APRIL 2, 2018 AT 7PM

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– What makes someone black? Is it “one drop of blood?” A way of speaking and dressing? Exploring a recurring and divisive issue in African American communities—skin color, this film is candid, sometimes painful, but also often funny. A look at race and the complexities of color.

was based on a lie. How do we come to terms with the sins and mistakes of our parents? Lacey Schwartz discovers that answering those questions means understanding her parents’ stories as well as her own. She pieces together her family history and the story of her dual identity using home videos, archival footage, interviews, and episodes from her own life. Little White Lie is a personal documentary about the legacy of family secrets, denial, and the power of telling the truth.

An open letter to America. 108 minutes, 2014 MONDAY MAY 7, 2018 AT 7PM In Justin Simien’s writer-director debut, a college student named Sam gets real on the radio about the subtle, pervasive racism in the United States. “Dear white people,” Sam begins, before talking about the myriad ways white folks try to appropriate or condescend black culture, from the way they use words like “thang” to the way an acquaintance of hers is dating a black guy as an apparent act of social rebellion. But how down is Sam? Is this really her behind the mic, or is she playing a part, too?
