A Message from the Headteacher Dear Parents and Pupils As ever, our pupils have been involved in many visits and activities this term, some of which you can read about in this newsletter. Year 9 pupils have been making their options choices over the course of this term. Final options are due in at the end of term. You probably won’t be aware, but we are one of only two secondary schools in Swansea that have retained 4 option choices for our pupils at Key Stage 4. Most schools have reduced the number to 3 in order to give extra curriculum time to English, Maths and WBQ. While these subjects are clearly very important, at Penyrheol we believe that offering a wider choice of GCSEs/BTECs is in the best interests of our pupils and will provide them with a broader, more balanced education. Year 9 have finished their school exams for this year, although they still have their final teacher assessment levels to be awarded in all of their subjects before the end of the Summer Term. But all other year groups still have exams to come. Year 11, of course, face their final GCSEs very soon now and should be well into a thorough and systematic revision programme. Year 10 also face exam modules this summer in a range of subjects and should likewise be revising hard. They have mock exams in these subjects immediately after the Easter holiday. Year 10 school exams then take place near the end of June. Year 7 and 8 end of year school exams take place in mid-June. I wish all our pupils every success in the exams they face next term. It’s either good results or excuses! You can’t have both. And hard work is the difference between the two. We have two big projects that will hopefully be taking place during the Easter holidays. One is to place a large number of solar panels on one of our giant roof spaces. This will reduce our energy costs over the next 25 years. The other is to begin the process of finally dismantling C Block (the grey building by the Leisure Centre). C Block served us very well as temporary accommodation for 3 years following the fire in 2006. However, it has been sitting unused on site since September 2009 and we will be very glad to see it taken away! That process should be starting soon. Yours faithfully

ALANTOOTILL Headteacher

Learning Support/STF Welsh Hospital Fundraisers The Learning Support Department and the STF were at the receiving end of a very generous donation from Welsh Hospital Fundraisers recently. The Fundraisers donated ten computers, an iPad and a Reading Scheme that pupils and Staff have already made great use of! Mr. Huball from the charity came in to meet the pupils that are benefiting from the equipment and was glad the money was being put to such good use. He had a great time chatting to the pupils in the STF who are all extremely thankful for this overwhelming donation.

STF Sports Star Congratulations to Kieran Moruzzi-Jones, who was a finalist in the Swansea Sports Awards 2015. Kieran was nominated for ‘Junior Disabled Sportsman of the Year’ and was invited to the awards ceremony held at the Brangwyn Hall on the 25th February. Kieran, who is pictured left with Alan Curtis from Swansea City, also met other sports stars including rugby player Dan Biggar! Unfortunately Kieran was pipped to the post, winning a very respectable second place, but nothing to worry about, since Kieran has also secured a place in the 2017 Special Olympics for Swimming! We all wish Kieran every success for his sporting career which is no doubt going to continue to flourish!

Where Words Fail... Finally...A Festive Flavour of our Christmas Concert! Our Christmas Concert, a major event in the school calendar is always too late in the term to make the Christmas Newsletter, so here is a quick ‘look back’ at the entertaining evening: Our annual Christmas Carol Service took place in St Catherine’s Church, Gorseinon. The night was a huge success with over 150 students taking part from years 7-11. A wide range of musical ensembles and soloists performed pieces and songs with either a Christmas theme or an atmospheric or contemporary feel. The vocal ensembles included the Senior Choir, Junior Choir, Chamber Choir, Year 10 vocal ensemble and Boys Choir in addition to vocal solos from pupils in all year groups. The instrumental items included a variety of music from the school orchestra, jazz band, string group, guitar and ukulele group and wood wind group. As always, it was a lovely evening and a great start to the Christmas holidays which began just a couple of days later. It’s hard to believe that was already four months ago!

Exam Success Congratulations to all pupils who passed their ABRSM music exams last term and good luck to all pupils taking ABRSM music exams this Spring season. ABRSM UCAS Points - A distinction at grade 7 practical on any instrument is worth 60 UCAS points; this is the same as an A grade at AS level. A distinction at grade 8 practical on any instrument is worth just under a C at A-level in UCAS points.

Music from the Movies Join us for our annual Summer Concert at Penyrheol Theatre on 5th July at 7p.m. Our theme this year is ‘Music from the Movies’ and promises to be a lovely evening of music for all the family to enjoy!

Music Speaks! Y11 Music Showcase In February, we were treated to an evening of very varied musical performance by the Year 11 GCSE Music students. The evening was very nicely compered by Isobel Bass and Samantha John who tell us a little bit about the night’s entertainment. “The first half of the evening started with a trumpet piece, performed by Head Boy Alex Lang and Lewis Dennis and was followed by an enormous variety of pieces ranging from Ellie Goulding and Ed Sheeran to ‘There are worse Things I could do’ from the musical Grease! As comperes, we found it tricky at first to create a relaxed ‘vibe’ in the audience, but we cracked a couple of jokes and after a few laughs the audience soon relaxed. It was actually quite an honour to be trusted with such an important job! The talented Year 11 pupils went on to impress the audience with their performances throughout the second half which opened with Maisie Jones playing a lovely piano arrangement of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’. Other performances followed and included both classical and contemporary pieces. One highlight of the evening was a saxophone solo performed by Amelia Maguire, who played ‘Life on Mars’...a tribute to musician David Bowie who died earlier this year. This performance received a huge round of applause! A special mention should go to the Year 10 pupils who worked the lighting, managed the stage and served refreshments. All of which contributed to the overall success of the evening. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience of compering the evening and loved listening to the Year 11s perform. They all did an amazing job and have given us (Year 10s) something to aspire to for next year!”

Movement and Meditation! Dance Club is Totally Toe-Tapping! Penyrheol’s dance club is held twice a week and pupils from across all the year groups attend. The pupils learn a range of different dance genres including hip hop, modern, contemporary, commercial and musical theatre and more recently, we have introduced a tap dancing class which is proving to be very popular as the pupils learn their time steps from their shuffles! There are 50 members in the dance club at the moment, all of whom rehearse for free on a Monday and Friday after school until 4:30 p.m The club is fun and dynamic and offers many exciting opportunities to perform and compete in local competitions. Following a successful performance of ‘Hello’ by Adele and ‘Shut up and dance with me’ in the school Eisteddfod, the members are now looking ahead to their 5x60 competition in July. If you are interested in joining the club come along to the drama studio on Monday’s after school or talk to Mrs Wilson.

24 Hours That Changed the World Just after half term we welcomed Mr. Paul Davies and his team to school to speak about Christianity and how ‘24 Hours Changed the World’. It was the story of Jesus Christ leading up to his crucifixion. Year 8 found the talk very interesting and despite varying levels of belief, the talk was well received and actually quite entertaining. Pupils from Year 8 comment on the presentation: “We started the session with some ‘True’ or ‘False’ questions that made us interact with the speakers/actors. This was my favourite part of the session” Chloe Griffiths 8U “I learnt things that I didn’t know before and the true and false session made us realise that nobody in this world is perfect and that we all make mistakes”. Jay Roberts 8R “I thought the talk was very interesting and Paul Davies added some lively enthusiasm to the lesson. The video we watched was well structured and I especially liked the quizzes at the end”. Edan Reid 8U

Year 8 & 9 Go Bananas! “There’s a banana on your seat”... ”Please do not eat it, you will need it later!” “Well that certainly stirred a little curiosity and confusion! We all made our way to the tables and enjoyed some snacks that were provided for us, while a lady gave us an introduction about the day.

We were then told to take our bananas and write our name, age, school, hobbies etc. on them. After this, the lady played us a video about children’s rights. Then we were asked to peel back the skin of the banana and the lady said: “We are all different on the outside but inside we are all the same”. It was a great idea to prove a point and most of us then ate our bananas!”

Our ‘Perfect’ School! “On large pieces of paper, we had to draw and write about ‘Our Perfect School’. I started our page off, by drawing the main structure of the school building. I then drew a ‘zoomed in’ classroom which was a modern high tech room. Some people made trees from Play-Doh. I wrote on sticky notes: ‘Class Pets’, ‘Play less football in P.E.’ and so on. Some other people wrote ‘More school trips’, ‘More Tech lessons’ and ‘Learn to grow vegetables’. This took a lot of thinking, so we had tea and coffee before moving to the next workshop”.

Clubs, Hubs & Satellites! “In this workshop we discussed different kinds of clubs, Youth clubs, Hub clubs and Satellite clubs. We talked about budget cuts and how this affects the running of these clubs. We looked at ways of being able to continue running all the different types of clubs and how to staff them. Most of us decided to share out the money available and give each type of club the same amount of nights to run. However, a few people disagreed and chose other options, but gave good opinions for their choice which was interesting” “Our final workshop was about the County’s budget and what services they could cut money from. We started by standing in a line in order of how much we agreed or disagreed with various statements and then we were shown several pieces of large paper that were placed at various points around the room. These represented different places and resources around the town, i.e. Youth clubs, Public transport, Recycling, Leisure Centres, Parks, Schools etc. There were ten in total. Four wooden bricks were placed on each sheet and we had to choose NINE bricks to take away in total. Each brick represented £1000”. “It was really difficult to choose and it made us realise how hard it must be for the council to make these decisions! This was a really enjoyable & interesting day! “ By Edan Reid (8U)

Our Rugby Develop “My favourite sport at school was rugby. Rugby is all about teamwork Gordon Brown Ex British Prime Minister. Spring Half Term has been an exciting term for Penyrheol Rugby with the introduction of our girls team, Primary School Feeder Festival, leaders coaching qualification and the continued running of the school teams.

Girls Rugby This term proved to be quite promising in terms of girls rugby, with the school attending its first all-girls rugby festival. The sessions that have been delivered throughout the curriculum helped to create the interest from girls right across the school. Due to the amount of interest we were able to take two teams to the festival (over 20 girls). The day itself was a massive success with all the girls enjoying the experience of rugby and working together as a team. Both teams went undefeated during the festival, which with it being their first time was a massive achievement. It was a great day out for all and the girls represented the school perfectly. We are hoping to attend many more festivals over the next couple of months and get even more girls involved at in the game of rugby.

Primary School Festival On Friday 26th February, Penyrheol Comprehensive School hosted its first Primary School Feeder Festival with 4 teams across the area taking part in rugby on the Penyrheol Comprehensive School Fields. It was great to see over 60 pupils, boys and girls across the 4 primary schools enjoying their afternoon and playing rugby against their neighbouring schools. There was a vast amount of talent on show and teachers and parents commenting on how well run the festival was and how nice it was to be able to have the opportunity for their pupils to attend a rugby festival like this one.

School Rugby Teams

Due to the bad weather last term there has unfortunately been a lot of rugby games called off...in fact 22 fixtures in total! Although this has been a tough time for playing rugby fixtures, we have still managed to play 12 fixtures this term with the main focus being on the Swansea Schools Cup and our all girls rugby.

pment Officer Reports! Rugby Leaders Award This term 11 pupils (all Year 11) have qualified for their Rugby Leader’s Award. This award allows you to coach and referee ‘Tag Rugby’ at the age grade level. The qualification can also go towards the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification. The Year 11 boys completed the course during one day by completing a booklet and going through some practical elements with Mr Tucker. These pupils are now putting their training to the test by helping to coach and refereeing in the local community for both mini and junior rugby games. Over the next few months there will be an opportunity for Year 10 pupils to complete this same course, so if you are interested and wish to find out more please contact Mr Tucker. Year Group Achievements

Year 7 Through to the semi-final of the Swansea Schools Cup

Year 8 Through to the semi-final of the Swansea Schools Cup

Year 9 Yet to play Birchgrove for a place in the quarter finals of the Swansea Schools Cup

Year 10 Unfortunately lost out narrowly to a very strong Gwyr team in the Swansea Schools Cup.

Year 11 Through to the semi-final of the Swansea Schools Cup. If any pupils are not involved in the school rugby team but are interested in joining, please speak to Mr Tucker where there will be opportunities for you to join the team in the coming months. If there are any players who wish to further develop their rugby skills, then why not join one of our local community clubs at Gorseinon RFC or Loughor RFC? (Contact Mr Tucker for more details). Last but by no means least I would like to thank Mr Fuge, Mr Clapperton, Mr Rees, Mr Day and Mr Edwards for their help, involvement and commitment to Penyrheol rugby...without whom there would not have been as many opportunities for pupils to play this important team game.

Student Voice Charity Cheques

Just before breaking up for Christmas, we were thrilled to welcome some special guests to our December meeting. Matthew Evans (Representing LATCH) and Tom Bloogs (Representing Action for Autism) came along to collect cheques, presented to them by our Head Boy and Girl and their deputies.

The cheques represented money raised by the school during our charity week and Student Voice decided that the money should be split between 3 charities: LATCH £400 , Action for Autism £400 and UNCHR £400

Gorseinon’s Got Talent

In January, Student Voice welcomed Mr Aaron Phillips who was representing the Parc Y Werin Committee and we discussed plans for the future of Parc Y Werin and what young people in the area would like to see happening. Mr Phillips also advised us that our pupils were welcome to enter the forthcoming ‘Gorseinon’s Got Talent’ competition on 29th April 2016. Judges include the Mayor of Gorseinon, The Wave and the Company Principal of Gorseinon’s ‘Musicality Academy of Performing Arts’.

Motivational Decorating!

One of the current discussions taking place at the moment is about creating a positive atmosphere all around the school and that motivational slogans might be displayed on some of the bare walls in the school. The positive words ‘tie in’ with our Rights Respecting Schools ethos and the restorative practice that is currently being rolled out within the school.

Transition Council In early March we welcomed pupils from our partner Primary Schools for one of our regular Transition Meetings. The Year 6 pupils met with pupils from all year groups from the comprehensive and learned about the various clubs and committees that take place in the school. The Year 6 pupils met their future Pastoral Support officer and were given a tour of the school.

St David’s Day Eiste On the 1st March we celebrated St. David’s Day by holding an Eisteddfodd in the school theatre. Entertainment was provided by the pupils and we were treated to song, dance and poetry throughout the morning. Hosted by Head of Welsh, Mr N Binding, the school was split into teams, each team representing an ‘element’, Dwr (Water), Gwynt (Wind), Tan (Fire) and Tir (Earth). The competitions were judged by Mrs Marion Davies (Ex Head of Welsh) who returned to Penyrheol especially for the event. We thank her for her time. Anti-Bullying StudentAmbassadors Voice During March, along with pupils from Morriston Comprehensive School, our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors attended a certificated restorative practice training which took place in the Library Resource Centre. The following pupils are our current Anti-Bullying Ambassadors:

Year 7 Alex Dubjaja Connor Mould April Simpson Morgan Davies

Year 8 Freya Whiteley Scott Holliday Nathan Jamison Tilly Morton-Lewis

Year 9 Steffan Davison Morgan Gay Courtney Rudd Jodie Adams

Morgan Davies (Year 7) tells us all about the day: Our training was about using restorative practice in school, which would help us solve arguments and stop problems from escalating. We were taught techniques that would help us to understand what happened and what would be a fair consequence. We learnt about the importance of considering the effect that bullying or having an argument can have on ALL parties.. We did role play to see how the restorative practice would work. I am very excited to visit Morriston school in the future to see what they do and how their anti-bullying scheme works.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Bronze Award 2015/16. 26 Year 10 pupils are currently taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award and have recently completed two training courses, one in January in Pembrey Country Park and one in February in Afan Argoed. These are the first of five training days, with the aim of a final overnight expedition in July! The pupils are supported by members of our own staff: Ms Steel, Miss Newman, Mr Binding, Mr Wallace and Mr Owen with past teacher Mr Sam Edwards continuing to support the school along with Howard Sims (a volunteer) and Dave Phillips (The Swansea DofE Development Officer). In the picture you can see the girls group (Georgia Crahart, Caitlin Cavalluci, Isobel Bass, Megan Jones and Lera Siderenko), with their leader Howard, stopping for lunch. As you can see it was a lovely dry day, if not a little cold and especially when we stopped for lunch. The girls now appreciate that you cannot have too many layers on, or with you and that working as a team, means sometimes sharing hot drinks, warm clothing, hats and gloves. The skills learnt on this day were how to use a map, compass, pacing and how to navigate using tick features.

Our March adventure, is a sponsored walk in order to raise money to develop The Duke of Edinburgh Award at Penyrheol. The money will be used to buy more equipment, to aid the pupils and staff participating in the programme.

Memorial Bench for Alfi-Jay Pictured right is Mrs S Morris who is proudly sitting on the new memorial bench, which has been constructed in the STF garden in memory of her son Alfi-Jay who died of a rare condition called Neonatal Marfan Syndrome. The bench is for all pupils and staff to use and we invite you to feel free to sit down and relax (no food please, there are picnic tables nearby). The bench was built and designed by our very own Mr Battini incorporating daffodil designs contributed by the STF pupils. The Daffodil is significant to Alfi-Jay which is why it was chosen.
