Welcome

to ‘Peony Paradise’! We are Jim & Carol Adelman and we live in the farm community of Brooks, just north of Salem, Oregon. We raised our 5 children on this farm, growing crops such as peppermint, peaches, hazelnuts, and grass for seed, with our main crop for 25 years being apples. We also custom harvested tree fruits, sweet cherries, pie cherries, prunes, and hazelnuts, for other farmers. We have evolved over the years and began growing peonies nearly 25 years ago. We printed our first catalog and began selling to the public in 1995. Since then we have become well known around the world for our quality and commitment to peony perfection. Our goal is to provide the highest quality, true to name peony roots available. We have three generations of Adelmans working to pass on our love for peonies. We enjoy sharing God’s exquisite creation, the peony, with you.

Where will Peonies grow?

Bush and Itoh Peonies are suitable for USDA zones 2-8 and Tree Peonies for USDA zones 4-8. They must have a dormancy period every winter to bloom and thrive. Peonies are not generally successfully grown south of Birmingham, Alabama or south of Monterey, California. Although, southern areas with higher elevation may receive the cold period needed. Check online or with your local extension service to know what USDA zone you are in.

Prices in this catalog are effective January 1, 2021 superceding prices in all previous publications.

Peonies are shipped as dormant bare root plant divisions. Sent by U.S. priority mail between September 15th and October 15th with 2-3 business day delivery.

Herbaceous and Intersectional Peonies Herbaceous or bush peonies: Die down to the ground in the winter and emerge in March or when the snow melts. Many find they are deer resistant. Peonies are long lived, minimal care plants.

There are two types of bush peonies: Lactifloras are the most common species found in nurseries, its native location is China. Most lactiflora cultivars produce side buds.

Ada Niva $18 RARE

(Niva/Snelson, 1999) Red, japanese, slightly fragrant, midseason, 30” tall, lactiflora. Glossy and lustrous foliage. Center petaloids edged with gold/white. No support needed.

Hybrids are crosses between two or more species. They bring additional colors, foliage types, and an earlier bloom season. Most hybrid cultivars only produce one bloom per stem.

Intersectional or Itoh peonies: Are a cross between the TOH herbaceous (or bush) peony and the tree peony. These crosses have produced new and exciting colors. The plants have the lovely leaf form of the tree peonies, but die down to the ground in the winter. The plants are strong and healthy with a nice rounded bush.

Award Of Landscape Merit ALM

This award is granted to peonies that have outstanding landscape and growth characteristics. It was designed to provide information on particular peony varieties that would be desirable for landscapers to use in their garden designs. Included in characteristics are the ability to stand up in inclement weather and to be disease resistant. The first round of nominations were made by APS members in 2008 and the awards were presented by the respected and knowledgeable committee members. A handful of varieties have been added each year since.

Peony FAQ’s 1. How are peonies sold? We sell peonies as bare-root tubers. 3-5 eye divisions. For an order of one, you will receive one division. Bare-root peonies are best planted in the fall for the most success.

2. H ow will I receive my peonies? You will receive your peonies as bare roots, each root will be tagged with the variety name. They will be packaged in a lightly moist peat moss shipped out to you September 15th – October 15th.

3. W hat care do peonies require? Peonies require little care. Watering, fertilizing twice a year, cutting the foliage down in the fall (tree peonies do not get cut down).

4 . Do peonies only bloom once? Yes, peonies only bloom once a year. You can extend the time you have peonies in bloom by selecting one variety from each season, very early to late season.

5. How long can peonies live? Peonies come back every year, some are known to be at least 100 years old. They may outlive you!

6. Do I need to dig and divide my plants? Peonies are not like some other perennials that need to be dug and divided every year. They can stay in ground, if you wish to share your plant or increase your collection, you can divide your plants in the fall.

7. W hy do I have ants on my peonies? When peonies are in tight bud they secrete a sugary substance, the ants are just there eating the sugar. Ants are not needed to open the bloom. If they are a problem, shake the blooms off before bringing them in or look for an Ant Block product at your garden center.

8. My peonies aren’t blooming, any suggestions? Top reasons why peonies don’t bloom is they are planted too deep, not receiving enough sunlight, over-fertilized or fertilized with a lawn or generalpurpose fertilizer, crowded by other plants and don’t have enough space.

9. Where are your peonies grown? Everything we sell and ship is field grown in our fields here in the Willamette Valley of Salem, Oregon. Your order will be 100% filled from plants from our fields.

10. Why are there so many different price points? The newest peonies are going to be at the highest price points, it is a slow process to create a new peony so generally brand new introductions are going to be more expensive right out and will slowly lower as they become more readily available. Tree Peonies Tree peonies: called tree peonies for the woody stems that they have. Tree peonies have woody stems that defoliate in the fall, but the wood stems stay intact, above the ground. They tend to bloom earlier and with larger flowers than the bush peony. They are generally slow to increase. Some are sold as named varieties; however, they are frequently sold by color. Tree peonies can have a height as little as 20” tall all the way up to over 8’ tall, depending on the plant habit, maturity, and pruning.

All of our tree peonies are field grown on their own roots. Other growers use a quick way to increase tree peonies by grafting a piece from the parent plant onto a piece of herbaceous root to provide a quick-start energy supply for the tree peony. Sometimes the vigorous herbaceous root takes over to the detriment of the tree peony. In some cases the herbaceous will come up and bloom beside the tree peony. Own-root peonies are also an advantage if the top is damaged by severe freezing or accidental cut down the root will send up more buds and stems that will be the same variety as planted.

What are Intersectional or Itoh Peonies?

ITOH

Intersectional or Itoh peonies are a cross between the herbaceous (or bush) peony and the tree peony. These crosses have produced new, exciting colors. The plants have the lovely leaf form of tree peonies, but die to the ground in the winter. The plants are strong and healthy with a nice rounded bush, generally shorter than most bush peonies. Types of Peony Blooms SEMI-DOUBLE flowers always have prominent pollenbearing stamens intermixed with large petals. Examples: Buckeye Belle, Coral Charm, Feather Top, Minnie Shaylor The FULL DOUBLE bloom completes the process of doubling. All the stamens and carpels have developed into petals resembling the guard petals. Examples: Ann Cousins, Gardenia, Kansas, Paul M. Wild, Tourangelle

With JAPANESE-type blooms the doubling process has begun. The stamens have widened into staminodes that may look like shredded petals that are surrounded by larger outer petals. This flower form stands up well in weather. Examples: Madame Butterfly, Nippon Beauty, Sword Dance The BOMB-type flower has smaller petals that form a mound or bomb in the center of the larger, outer petals of the same color. Examples: Angel Cheeks, Mister Ed, Red Charm

SINGLE peonies are composed of five or more broad petals which surround a mass of pollenbearing stamens and seed-bearing carpels. Examples: Athena, Krinkled White, Scarlett O’Hara

Award Of Landscape Merit

ALM This award is granted to peonies that have outstanding landscape and growth characteristics. It was designed to provide information on particular peony varieties that would be desirable for landscapers to use in their garden designs. Included in characteristics are the ability to stand up in inclement weather and to be disease resistant. The first round of nominations were made by APS members in 2008 and the awards were presented by the respected and knowledgeable committee members. A handful of varieties have been added each year since.

Cut Flower Care It is best to cut flowers early in the morning while the buds are still cool. Leave at least 3 sets of leaves on the plant to keep the plant vigorous. Most varieties can be cut when the bud feels like a large, firm marshmallow or when you observe the first petal move away from the bud. When cut in too tight of a bud, the flower may not open. Wash and bleach all tools, buckets, and vases to reduce flower contact with bacteria. Place the stems immediately in cool water. Remove all foliage that will be below water level in your final arrangement, as foliage will begin to break down under water and give your flowers a shorter vase life. Cut the stem again underwater as you are placing it in the arrangement. Air blocks the water uptake when stems are cut out of water. A bead of water will remain over the pores as you transfer the stem to the vase. Keep the flowers out of direct sunlight and heat. Change the water in vases daily if possible to reduce the bacteria count. In floral arrangements you might want to use a commercial flower food that contains a bacterial inhibitor. Flowers shouldn’t be refrigerated with fruit. Fruit emits ethylene gas which speeds flower maturity when you want to slow maturity. To open flowers faster place them in warm water in a warm room. To slow the progress, place them in a dark, cool room and if desperate- add ice to the water.

PLANTING REQUIREMENTS: Peonies do best with half to full day sun; aerated, well-drained soil; space around the plant to allow for air circulation; and a winter dormancy period. Fall is the correct time for planting, giving the feeder roots a chance to become established before Spring bloom. Bare root peonies ordered will be shipped in the fall for fall planting. Planting instructions will be included with each shipment, and are also available on our website. While following our planting instructions, prepare your soil, plant your peonies, and wait until spring for them to emerge. Make sure to avoid planting in wet areas and put no more than 2 inches of soil over the growing eyes. If you purchased potted peonies while visiting our open house, those are ready to be transferred to your prepared garden soil.

Peony care includes: 1) light fertilization with a tulip/daffodil bulb fertilizer or 10-10-10 at time of emergence and in the fall, 2) maintaining moderate soil moisture during the Summer, 3) cutting foliage off at soil level on herbaceous and intersectional peonies in the late Fall to reduce disease and induce dormancy in warm climates (tree peonies do not get cut down to the ground), 4) maintaining only 2” of soil cover over the growing eyes (shallower in warm zones). Disease Prevention: The main disease affecting peonies is botrytis, or gray mold, which is a fungus and should be treated with copper sulfate or a fungicide used for black spot in roses. Allowing for air circulation around the plant as well as cutting and disposing of foliage in the Fall will greatly reduce the possibility of disease.
