About People Express

People Express is a professional participatory arts organisation, based in Swadlincote, that works primarily with and for the communities of South Derbyshire. What we do

People Express believe everyone has creative skills and potential, and by supporting people to create their own work we can provide the fun, meaningful and personal experiences they need to feel part of the wider, wonderful world of the arts. Participatory arts projects provide a choice of art forms as well as the artist’s skills, based on tailoring a project around the skill levels, individual needs and the wider aspirations of the group. They are particularly effective for communities, young people and children who may be harder to reach and feel less confident in the arts. Within participatory arts projects the role of the professional artist is to assist with progress, passing on their skills and using them to lead and inspire when needed and then to step back, support and encourage. It is the participants (of all ages and abilities) and the group working together that become the writers, performers, designers, creators and makers. ‘Participatory arts’ is one of a range of ways of providing access to the arts in the UK, there are also, for example; galleries, theatres, opera houses, dance performances, site specific installations and happenings, workshops and classes and festivals.

Participatory arts, where there is choice of art forms and the artist’s skills include tailoring a project around the skill levels, the individual needs and the wider aspirations of the group, is particularly good for hard to reach communities and young people and children who may feel less confident in the arts.

Where we are

People Express has a base with workshop/exhibition space in The Old Pressing Shop in the centre of Swadlincote, but we are also committed to maintaining outreach work to reach our rural communities.

Chair’s Report

A year of diverse and highly rewarding activity has seen a continuation of our work with young people; attendance at various shows and events thereby reaching and engaging many in participatory activities; further supporting and developing the role of volunteers in fundraising and running projects; and following the move into our new accommodation, the staging of our first contemporary art exhibition. Activity with young people has centred around film making projects and other arts programmes working with many groups, including local schools, disabled children and their parents, young people at risk of offending or exclusion and with South Derbyshire Youth Forum, in partnership with Youth Services. We share participants’ pride in the quality of work produced which has received many commendations and, in some cases, won awards. The staging of our first exhibition, HOPE, in our new gallery gave us a much better understanding of just how much work is involved in setting up and running such an event. It was, however, well received and deemed to be thought provoking by its many visitors. We are now considering requests to tour the exhibition. The last year has seen closer and more effective working between the small staff team and Management Committee. We continue to be well served and benefit from the professionalism and expertise of our Director, Julie Batten, and Finance & Programme Support Officer, Julie Goodwin. We did, however, see our Project Manager, Cathy Miles, move on to pastures new and thanks are due to her for everything she contributed over the last seven years. Her replacement, Hema Majithia, has made an immediate impact with her enthusiasm and energy. I must also acknowledge the contribution made by our Management Committee, a good mix of longer serving and newer members who give their time voluntarily, whose experience and expertise is made available for the benefit of our organisation. Finally, it would be remiss of me not to record thanks to our three main funders, the Arts Council, South Derbyshire District Council and Derbyshire County Council, for their continued funding and support at a time when all are experiencing huge pressures on budgets. Without their support, there would be no People Express, and the area and its residents would not enjoy and benefit from the wide ranging programme of activity covered in this Annual Report. Michael Dewsnap, Chair

Our Programme Priorities

Our priorities for the three years will continue to be:

1. To increase, widen and sustain the engagement of young people in the arts, in particular those:

• With disabilities. • With mental health issues. • Where the arts can enable them to prevent, address, explore or challenge their social exclusion and related issues. • In isolated rural areas.

2. To promote, explore and celebrate diversity through the arts, by:

• Partnerships with disability led groups and disabled artists. • Increasing the involvement of key organisations, artists and participants from minority communities in our work. • Championing arts projects that challenge prejudice, promote social cohesion and strengthen the voice of oppressed or hidden groups.

3. To explore the potential of new media, film and digital technologies for celebrating and showcasing the arts and for participants to achieve creative and artistic excellence and innovation, by:

• Bringing in specialist expertise through new partnerships with artists, curators, producers, companies and the commercial sector. • Upgrading our resources to meet the needs in this field of work. • Offering training and support.

Diary Of The Year 2011-2012 April 2011

DAFTAs The year started with several of the young people who created films through the Parachute Project attending Derbyshire County Council’s DAFTAs film award ceremony, very excited as their films were nominated! Pictured here is Ben Archer whose film ‘The Annoyance’ won best comedy. The film takes a comic look at how autism affects your experience of the world and the people around you.

MAY/JUNE/JULY 2011

101 ways to say I love you!

Planning the theme.

101 Ways took three different youth led and creative approaches to tackling the sensitive issues around positive sexual health. A small steering group of boys led the process, exploring the issues around relationships through rap and theatre. Using themes from these workshops they designed and created two stunning 20ft graffiti panels in the boys changing rooms at Granville School with their peers. Ceramic artists worked with mixed gender classes to create bespoke tiles around the theme. The finished artwork is displayed at the entrance to the school. A poster was created with 101 suggestions by young people on ways to show someone you love them. (A list of the suggestions can be seen on the back of this report)

APRIL/MAY/JUNE/JULY 2011 Raising Aspirations People Express completed the Aspirations project to raise the confidence and leaderships skills of girls through the arts. Over the year a small number of girls from a secondary and three junior schools met regularly to participate in a range of new and culturally diverse experiences in the arts. As leaders of the project they formed themselves into the ‘Flamingo Art Dudes’ designing and helping to run mini arts festival for their peers in their schools. The girls chose their art forms, which included African Drumming, Bollywood Dancing, Ceramics, Willow Weaving, Extreme Knitting and Film Making.

Each festival finished with performances by all the children and showcasing the film shot through the day.

Each school had a talk on contemporary arts practice from professional Derbyshire based artist Emma Tooth.

The Aspirations Project culminated in an Artists Residency at Granville School with all of the Flamingo Arts Dudes plus an additional twenty girls creating a video combining Rap, Bollywood dance and African Drumming.

JUNE 2011

Spray and Clay!

Summer Festivals People Express ran free participatory activities at the Festival of Leisure at Maurice Lea Memorial Park with pottery and printing workshops by Burton based Ceramicist Julia Webster and The NAK (Newhall Arts Kollective) and at ‘Popcorn in the Park’ run by Surtal Asian Arts in Derby.

Parent members of the SHOUT committee actively took part!

OCTOBER 2011 Spray and Clay! The newly formed group SHOUT set up their first arts activities specifically for disabled children, their siblings and families at Rosliston Forestry Centre. After consultation, the chosen art forms ‘Spray & Clay’ proved a great success with parents and children alike.

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2011

HOPE Exhibition In 2010 we worked alongside Reach the People Charity (which provides support and accommodation for women and families affected by domestic abuse) to set up a project that would provide the women with access to the arts at such a life changing and challenging time. The project, called ‘Lite Bites’, set up participatory artists residencies in film, woodworking and visual arts and it was designed to respond, almost spontaneously, to when the women were feeling able to participate. Alongside the art work created by the women and families, several personal and very moving stories were captured and People Express felt them to be so powerful that we wanted to present the work as Swadlincote Contemporary Art Gallery’s very first exhibition.

“Excellent – re survivors exp ally gives an insight into eriences and feelings – shows real pe ople – well do ne.” Jacqui

Opening Night led by Chair of South Derbyshire District Council Cllr Bob Wheeler The HOPE Exhibition

“Brilliantly staged. Thought provoking and touching. The way that you follow the story through each setting is very clever and makes you empathise. It should be a compulsory visit.” Katy “A really overwhelming experiencewherever you go in the room you hear her story. I had to stop and watch all of the videos twice, or three times over. Splitting the exhibition into the steps to escape/ freedom/ recovery was effective, giving insight into the emotion of her journey. The bedroom was so affecting.” Hannah

JANUARY/FEBRUARY/MARCH 2012 Young People & Film Making South Derbyshire Youth Forum successfully trebled their funding in this year for a railway safety film project they felt passionately about, so it could include the special effects they felt it needed to have a real impact on raising awareness among local young people. It is particularly relevant as in one of South Derbyshire’s rural villages two young people were nearly lost on a railway crossing. Knowing they had the funding they needed they pressed ahead finalising their script, researching their locations and casting the actors. Professional film maker Owen Tooth worked closely with the group supporting the whole process, including running an industry standard workshop for the Forum on the use of green screens and special effects.

FEBRUARY 2012 B.O.O.M!

BOOM! was set up in partnership with the Youth Inclusion and Support Partnership (YISP) offering a tailor made programme for small groups of young people at risk of offending. Launched over half term, workshops included film-making, pottery, special effects make up and street dance. The young people who named the project explained that for them BOOM! stands for ‘Building On Our Motivation’, many of them continue to be involved with People EXpress and the programme is ongoing.

MARCH 2012

Heathfields Primary School Willow weaver Peter Wood worked with all the children at Heathfields School in Hatton to create a beautiful living tunnel as part of the school’s ‘Creative Week’. The school is now developing plans with People Express for a multi-art form year-long project.

A word from our funders and our partners “The YISP young people have benefited from a variety of People Express projects. Their positive experiences have influenced their performance at school and helped to make good career choices and improve their behaviour in the community. Most young people come from difficult home situations and may be looked after, they may have witnessed domestic abuse or experienced severe financial hardship. Some are not in education or have recently been excluded. All are at high risk of offending and their lives are often chaotic and complex. The staff at People Express always treat YISP young people with respect and in a non-judgemental manner. They have enabled young people to use complex equipment in a safe manner and offered learning opportunities that are not offered by school or any other agency.” Susanna Konowalik (caseworker) Derbyshire Youth Inclusion and Support Partnership (YISP)

South Derbyshire District Council - Overview and Scrutiny Committee “The range of projects and the benefit that this has provided are commendable and the recognition that you have received to date is well deserved. The Members of the Council asked me to write expressing their appreciation for your participation in the scrutiny work, which has shown the excellent value we receive from our contribution to your organisation.” Paul Spencer Principal Democratic Services Officer
