PROJECT AREA

MYPO was formed in June 1999 and over the time, it has extended its operations over to five target areas (Thanphuzayat, Mudon and Hladakot, Ye and Kyaik Maraw townships). MYPO members are students, teachers and youth coming from different areas. There are approximately 130 members including 20 members alongside the Thai-Burma border. MYPO mostly focuses its activities inside Mon State both under the New Mon State Party and state-controlled areas. MYPO has been working with Mon local civil societies and youth to build the capacities of youth in the areas of leadership, democratic value, general knowledge, building networks with Mon and other ethnic groups, distribution journal, organizing youth seminar, youth exchanges, rights based training and awareness rising activities. The CSO has built strong networks with local young leaders, religious leaders, and local authorities, other Mon CBOs, CSOs and NGOs, in the project target’s areas.

Rehmonnya - Human Rights Foundation of MonLand

ABOUT The Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) was founded in 1995 by prodemocracy activists involved in country's 1988 student uprising and its current base of activists, Mon community and youth leaders continue to fight for this goal until today. Its main aim is to bring about the democratic structures, ensure human rights protection and genuine peace in Myanmar. Over the time, HURFOM implemented many project activities such as land rights, environment justice, research on drug abuse, women and child rights. Currently, HURFOM works on six main projects areas: Human rights documentation and dissemination; Human rights data management and advocacy; Human rights and civic education; Human rights defenders and community participation; Civil society development; Mon media and Women and children's rights project.

ABOUT MANA has been present in Mon State since 2006, it initiated its operations with a large programme on Reproductive Health and Behaviour Change Communication with the support of UNFPA and national level MANA. In the past, it actively contributed to the Census project and worked on promotion of behavioural change among young people by organizing sport and cultural events. The organization coordinates its initiatives with relevant government departments at township and state levels in relation to the drug use prevention and harm reduction schemes.

Lawoon Phy was established in 2014 December and the office base in Mawlamyine. There are 2 staffs and 27 volunteers. The organization is working for drugs users, youth, children, PLHIV and Women group and provides awareness trainings. Previously, the organization run MCH (maternal and child health) project and HR project in the project-targeted areas. However, drug use rates are still increasing within the state. The organization was involved throughout JAG and consider drug’s prevention activities as the most important task within the state.Â

ABOUT Myittar Saetaman was established in December 2007 and the office is based in Mawlamyine. The organization has 13 staff members and 35 volunteers. The organization implements project activities in five townships across Mon State (Mawlamyine, Kyikmayaw, Mudone, Thanphyu Sayat, Chaung Sone and Paung). Initially, the organization focused on HlV and human trafficking and the their work focus expanded also to issues related to drug issues and protection of basic rights of drug users rights seeing the high rate of drug use in the drama society and drug consumption being one of key reasons for HIV transmission.The CSO has been actively engaged in the formulation and implementation of the Drug Issue Roadmap within the framework of the INSPIRED Myanmar project.

Legal Light was founded in February 2014 by a group of lawyers who would offer gratuitous legal services in support of individual members of rural communities on the rule of law, as well as provided consultations for increasing of their knowledge and understanding about human rights protection. The main orientation of their work entails assistance to farmers against violations of the land law, by providing them with an improved knowledge about Agrarian Land Law and land registration applications and land use claims. Amongst the most important actions are the awareness raising trainings to the community about the existing land law framework, advocacy to local authorities, campaigning in targeted areas, assessment of land issues in the target communities and the provision of legal aid and pleading the cases of land grabbing and power abuse against rural smallholders at court.

Octagon started its human rights promotion activities in 2011. The founders are a group of former schoolmates who assembled into this initiative with the aim to promote dialogue and increase knowledge in local communities in Mon and Kayin State. They strive to bring policy change through all-inclusive participation of relevant stakeholders when policy drafts are being formulated. In their current work they support the active involvement of farmers in the land registration process by increasing their knowledge on land rights. Octagon works for the community to help them get a clear understanding about farmer rights and the process of land registration. They have been very active in their advocacy efforts related to the proper and transparent implementation of land registration process by addressing it with the government officials of the land department, members of parliament and committee members of land management. With this purpose in mind they have been providing land rights awareness trainings to farmers, by empowering them through collection the testimonies and other relevant data and presenting them at multi-actor dialogue sessions.

ABOUT NSDP was founded by the Phyue Ngon Yadanar Libary Team in 2010 and is based in Paung township. Â The CSO has 5 members and implements project activities in Paung Township, targeting the promotion of environmental protection and better land law policy related to coal mining through collaboration between the community members, CSOs, local authorities and MPs. NSPD gives raise awareness sessions about environmental protection and land law, and encourage the participation of the community members and local authorities to protect the natural resources in six rural communities of Paung Township.

ABOUT New Vision was established by the International Drug User network in December 2015, and currently it has 15 members. The CSO is based in Mawlamyine and conducts its project activities in three townships of Mon State (Mawlamyine, Mudon and Paung). Their main area of work is related to awareness raising on drug issues and drug policy to communities, especially youth and HIV effected people. Their goal is to reduce the risks of drug use through improved policy, and to raise public participation in anti-drug movements for the reduction of drug use in the target areas.

ABOUT MYEO is a non-profit and non-governmental organization that conducts capacity building and advocacy programs for youth. Their mission is to empower young people to become positive forces of change in their community. MYEO started its activities in 2009 as a loosely structured group of youth educators initiating awareness raising programs, which led to the organization’s formation in 2011. MYEO, in collaboration with other network groups, offers various capacity building activities and vocational training programs including basic computer skills, English language classes, community organizing skills, basic political training, human rights, peace and gender trainings, and other youth leadership trainings which target mainly university students and community leaders.

Since its inception in 2006 Myittar Shin has been providing a range of support to sex workers. They have been assisting them with free legal support, or with the access to microcredit funding that enables arrested inmates to get medical care, proper nutrition or provide any other kind of material support. Myittar Shin performs its work in a sensitive and confidential way to ensure the security and safety of its beneficiaries at all times. In order to address this issue at the community level, regular discussions and advocacy meeting are being held with the scope to inform participants of issues that sex workers are facing in Mawlamyine. Myittar Shin also provides legal trainings in order to increase knowledge about the relevant law for sex workers, for their better safety and protection.

ABOUT Justice Drum's purpose is to strengthen federal democracy and to promote youth participation in public affairs and in the politics. The specific areas of their focus have been: Â reform of village/ward law; voter education and election watch, reduction the use of drug and contribution into the discourse about the reform of the 2008 Constitution. The core of their current programme, activated though the support of INSPIRED Myanmar project, has the organization concentrated largely on community mobilization and engagement on drug use reduction with activities as literature talks about drug abuse; mini-dialogues to exchange experience on drug issues; basic human right and law awareness activities; organizing local anti-drug groups and regular advocacy meetings with representatives of theShan state government.

ABOUT KSJDO's vision is to contribute to shaping of an unbiased, peaceful, developed a society. In support of this, the main focus is on the rule of law, social justice and poverty reduction. Among other the larger achievements, in 2014 KSJDO organized Pa-O Youth Forum with the purpose to reach positive change by making people from different sides (i.e. political parties, armed groups and youth groups) meet face to face and discuss the issues at stake. As a result, many pressing challenges were discussed openly in front of the Pa-O youth. Their activities under the framework of INSPIRED Myanmar also focused on environmental issues, namely raising voices regarding the negative environmental and social impact of cement and steel factories. Presently, local communities in their target area would experience difficulties due to the operation of an antimony factory. KSJDO encouraged the discussion with local village leaders from seven villages to conduct advocacy for their cause. With this support, local communities by themselves were able to present their complaints to respective local authorities.

MPA (Shan State) area of work is centrered around initiatives that focus on land and natural resources issues in Shan State, such as land grabbing, mining and environmental protection. MPA (SS) is deems necessary to believe that effective development initiatives are formed by identifying people's needs and rights. The organization has been focusing on research and data assessment for their dialogue and discussions with the local actors. They have adopted and used a set of tools for natural resource management mapping and participatory democracy and evidence gathering. In order to provide support in the field of natural resources and land use course of actions, MPA (Shan State) is assisting in identifying of citizens' needs and their own abilities. In their current endevours they aim at achieving protection for local population, getting entitlement rights in line with the 2012 Land Law with regards to land grabbing cases caused by the implementation of government projects disrespectful to the law.

Pa-O Youth Organization

Established in 1947, PYO has been involved in awareness raising and capacity building activities for youth and affected communities. They conduct documentation and reserch, advocacy and campaigning on land issues, natural resources and drug issues. PYO advocates to Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) on local level, national level and international level as well. As youth advocacy, PYO works on "Youth peace and security", a report that is being drafted on youth voice and youth role in peace building and peace process. Another area of their focus is "youth and federalism" that aims at having organized youth groups, and a national ethnic youth conference with 800 youths.

ACT has relevant experience in advocacy activities such as organizing campaigns, exhibition on corruption behaviors; enviromemtal awareness (like a public event to save pinetrees) and they have gained important experience through implementation of the “Civic Engagement for anti-corruption in Southern Shan State� project supported by INSPIRED Myanmar.

The organization is actively involved in policy making debate, focusing mainly on tasks such as the child rights policy drawing, land policy drawing, water research, right to information, and awareness building for migrant women workers. Moreover, SSSWON representatives attend the national peace conference, the ethnic refugees support group and civil society forums. They have relevant networking activities with Southern Shan State Civil Society Network and the Shan State Women Affairs Committee.

Green Life Alliance for Development-GLAD

GLAD is a founding member of Myanmar People Alliance (December 2014), working to promote people’s participation through lobby and advocacy. Since 2015 ,GLAD has been cooperating in an extension program in Shan State in 4 areas (including PaungLaung area), focusing on non-violent advocacy for change on the grassroots level. They received a grant to carry out a project aimed to empower the community in Middle PaungLaung and create linkages with the community in Upper PaungLaung, to achieve an increased awareness of related laws, rules and regulations and citizen fundamental rights, FPIC (Free Prior Informed Consent), minority protection laws, as well as lawful, non-violent advocacy and negotiation and increased participation of affected communities.

Kyun Ta Htaung Myae (Thousand Islands) Foundation was established in 2010 by an active (now former) member of parliament to implement programs related to justice and peace, legal support and advice to farmers and communities on land disputes, resettlement and rehabilitation of conflict affected communities, human resource and capacity building on parliamentary processes and organizational management, networking and coordination with CSO’s, NGO’s, Local Government and EAOs. Currently KTHM work is centred around the following areas: justice and peace, human resource and capacity building, organization management, rehabilitation for conflict affected people, networking and advocacy. KTHM cooperates with 10 different local organizations and three networks in Shan State and one network in Kayah State (alongside its partners Metta Development Foundation and SaNaR, who are the focal points in the local level). KTHM also cooperates with and is being supported by 3 foreign insitutions [European Burma Organization (EBO), Heinrich Boll Foundation (HBF) and Hanns Seidel Foundation].

SaNaR (Save the Natural Resource) is a young organization established in 2018 as a non-profit with a main focus on the natural resource governance in Shan State. Its active members share real passion about transparency, accountability and participation in decision making process of natural resource sectors in Shan State. SaNaR intends to mobilize the community members to become aware about the fact that they are the key stakeholders on managing their resources in the relative area and cand advocate to the decision makers by developing campaign strategies and carrying out evidence researches. There are three main programmes on which SaNar would like to concentrate: 1 ) Community mobilization about land and water governance 2) Community based research and advocacy 3) Networking and coordination with CSOs, NGOs and INGOs relative with natural resource governance. SaNaR has made much effort not only in raising community voices but also in creating a space for them to participate in a dialogue with decision makers in the target area.

Peace and Justice

Peace and Justice was officially formed in late 2011 with the scope to conduct activities to improve farmer capacity and cooperate with them for securing farmer rights. They also participated in peace-building activities and emergency assistance after Cyclone Nargis. Current focus of the organization lays in farmers’ protection and their claims to get compensation or access to the confiscated lands. The CSO also provides awareness raising trainings to strengthen the knowledge of members of rural communities (in Mandalay, Sagaing Region, Magway Regions and Northern Shan State). P&J conducted a range of trainings (including ToT) about Land law and land rights, environmental conservation trainings, citizen journalism trainings and advocacy training. When the government enacted the National Land Use Policy, the CSO participated in consultations organized by the government pointing out the weak points of that policy and proving evidence from the communities and suggested options for change. P&J works with the Land administration officials, small holders, interested community members, active local groups, as well as national and internatopnal organizations to support their goals in the target areas. 49

Amaraaung Labour organization was established by 51 founding members (both women and men) from Amarapura township in Mandalay Region in 2013. In 2016 Amaraaung Labour organization later was transformed into Amaraaung Women’s League (AWL) with 26 women members and 2 men members. I has been fcusing on resolving land grabbing issues and helping affected farmers to claim and recover their rights. They have been active in several geographical (Nyaung Shwe township, in Southern Shan State, Chauk Township in Magway Region and Myin Gyan and Kyauk Se townships in Mandalay Region). In these townships, AWL also formed and supported running of labour unions. Members of the organization have been active as volunteers in community-based child protection initiatives. They seek collaboration with the government authorities and legal experts. Members of AWL actively participated in women empowerment trainings organized by Women Organizations Network and promoted their engagement in women empowerment activities. AWL is working closely with key stakeholders, local and regional CSOs, INGOs, youth’s groups, networks and community for the beneficiaries.
