Offset Surfaces Learning Objectives After completing this tutorial, you will be able to: • Construct and use surface features in solid modeling • Incorporate surface features in part design when appropriate • Construct Offset surfaces • Use the Sculpt tool Required Competencies Before starting this tutorial, you should have been able to: • Construct, constraint and dimension sketches • Project geometry on sketch planes • Extrude sketched profiles • Revolve sketched profiles • Loft sketched profiles • Understand the concepts of work and placed features • Understand how to manipulate the history tree in the browser

1. Open the Cell Phone.ipt file and pull down the EOP marker to reveal the Base Sketch and Side Profile Sketch.

3. Pull the EOP marker down revealing the Face Sweep Path and Face Profile sketches.

5. Turn the part over and create a boundary patch.

6. Use the Sculpt tool to form a solid from the “watertight” enclosed volume.

7. Add a 5mm G2 fillet around the bottom edge of the part.

8. Start the fillet tool and select the variable tab. Select the edge and then run the cursor along the edge. You will see snap points appear as you move. Select the first point as indicated and change the Radius to 3mm. (Don’t pick OK yet.)

9. Moving in a counter clockwise direction pick the corner fillet edges for a total of eight points.

10. Change the fillet radii to the following values.

Point 1=3 Point 3=5 Point 5=7 Point 7=7

Point 2=3 Point 4=7 Point 6=7 Point 8=5

11. Offset the top face as a surface 0.5mm out of the part. Rename the new surface in the browser with the name Buttons Surface. Turn off the visibility of the Buttons Surface.

12. Offset the top face as a surface 0.501mm out of the part. Rename the new surface in the browser with the name Numbers Surface. Turn off the visibility of the Numbers Surface.

13. Offset the top face as a surface .5mm into the part. Rename the new surface in the browser with the name Screen

14. Make the Base Sketch visible and Extrude‐cut From To the Screen surface to the top face as shown. Turn off the visibility of the Screen surface. (Tip: Because the Screen surface is down inside the part you will have to use the Select Other tool to pick.)

15. Drag the EOP marker all the way down, and then revolve the Speaker sketch around the horizontal axis line with cut. Change the face color properties as desired

16. Make the Buttons surface visible Extrude the buttons to the Buttons surface. Turn off the visibility of the Buttons surface.

17. Extrude the buttons text to the Numbers surface then turn off the Numbers surface and change the feature color properties of the text. (An alternative would have been to emboss the text from the top, but that could be much more processor intensive.) .
