WELCOME FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Joel Ouya- Head of School

..LET THE PAST BE THE PAST AND LOOK TO THE FUTURE, AND HAVE FUN WHILE YOU’RE AT IT. Joel Ouya - Head of School

First of all, welcome to Peponi School, it is great to see you all here after the long holidays which I hope you all enjoyed and have come rested, refreshed and ready to begin your journey into secondary school. My name is Joel, your Head of School for the coming year along with some of the prefects that will be leading you all. You are all here for a reason and that’s to work, there is no way around it. But while it is true that there are going to be periods of intense focus during your time here, the best advice I can give you at this stage of your life in this school is, like Mr. Durston said, embrace it, take opportunities that come your way and enjoy it, you really may never get this many opportunities to meet new people, try new activities and learn new things. We are all excited to welcome you all into this community, working with you and seeing what success we can all achieve together. So get to know everyone and embrace every opportunity, let the past be the past and look to the future, and have fun while you’re at it. Thank you.

NIAH SHAH Head Girl First of all, I would like to welcome you all back to school. I am Niah Shah, your Head Girl for the year. It goes without saying that the last year has been a challenging year with a big change in what we so call our “normal”. The safety measures put into place help us protect our community as well as ensure our academic life is maintained.

08.

The Peponi Family is once again vibrant and has successfully returned to the energetic atmosphere it has always been. Irrefutably, we are all eagerly waiting to return to life without masks, playing inter-school sports and pursuing our House competitions. Together let’s adapt to our new reality and remember to paint your own individual identity into all aspects of our school.

The new dedicated boarding house for pupils aged 11-14 years means Peponi School now offers the best boarding facility in not only Kenya but possibly the whole of sub-Saharan Africa.

SEDGE HOUSE OFFICIAL OPENING Ruth Cook - Marketing Officer

On 16th September 2021, we witnessed the official opening of Sedge House at Peponi School by Board members Mrs Kristina Pratt and Mrs Nyokabi Muthama. Speeches, ribbon-cutting and tours of the new facility (all socially distanced and meeting protocols) resulted in a very special day and a highlight in the Peponi Schools’ continued development.

09.

Renovated using all Kenyan and local suppliers, from start to finish, the new facility boasts twin rooms for our Year 7 and 8 boarders or our Year 9 day students with individual rooms for Year 9 weekly or full boarding pupils. Fitted out to very high standards the pupils’ rooms are supplemented with new washroom and showering facilities, comfortable Common Room areas and kitchens, boot rooms and more. Up to 60 girls and 60 boys in separate accommodation can be welcomed at Sedge House which is looked after by our boarding Housemistress, Ms Mary Mukule and her team of Tutors, Matrons and support staff. Headmaster Mr Mark Durston, said, “Sedge House rivals any boarding school facility in the UK. We are dedicated to offering our pupils a real ‘home form home’ on our beautiful campus, allowing all to thrive and achieve their full potential.” For more information or to request a visit of Sedge House please contact registrar@peponischool.org

INTER HOUSE CROSS-COUNTRY Marc-Antony Eysele - Director of Sport

This year saw the return of the much anticipated Inter-House Cross-Country and what a fantastic event it was! Houses spent the weeks leading up to the race organising early morning runs to prepare for the grueling 4km course which took pupils through various areas of Northlands Ranch. Nearly 300 pupils and staff took part in the race, with some outstanding performances.

Congratulations to the individual winners of each category: • Ruchi Raja - Junior Girls • Simarveer Sagoo - Junior Boys • Makena Wamatu - Seniors Girls • Mathew Namisano - Senior Boys The overall House trophies were decided by a points system in which top 20 place finishers scored and the House with the most runners received bonus points. This year’s winners: ELEMENTAITA and MAGADI

YOUNG VOCALIST’S COMPETITION 2021 James Laight - Director of Creative Arts

We were delighted and proud to host the inaugural edition of the Young Vocalist’s Competition over the weekend of Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September. This competition is loosely modelled on the successful Young Musician’s Competition that has now been running for 25 years. There has always been a demand for a similar competition for singers and we are very happy to oblige! As a first edition, we were naturally a little uncertain as to how it would run. Ultimately, it went very smoothly with competitors from a variety of Prep and Secondary schools ranging from 12 to 17 years old. The three judges selected six finalists in the Junior Solo category (15 years and younger) and two finalists in the Senior Solo category (16-19 year olds).

I would like to congratulate the following pupils from Peponi School for participating in the Preliminaries: • Faith Njoroge (Shell) • Yara Mballa (Lower 5th) • Ruchi Raja (Lower 5th) • Saiyana Pandya (Lower 5th) • Collin Muriungi (Upper 5th) • Miranda Kansiime (Lower 6th) In addition, we wish the following the very best of luck in the Finals that will be held on Sunday 10th October: • Amara Pannu (Shell) • Maansi Ruparel (Upper 5th) • Nyakio Koome (Upper 6th)

FROM THE LEARNING SUPPORT DEPARTMENT Fred Matu - Head of Faculty (Crane), SEND

As we begin a new academic year, the Learning Support department look forward to working with all pupils in our endeavour to support their learning and access to the curriculum at all levels.

We also offer support in exams through Access Arrangements and this ranges from extra time, use of word processors, readers/scribes among other forms of exam access arrangements.

For new pupils joining us this academic year, our interventions are guided by assessments done internally by the Special Education Needs Coordinator or from external assessments by Educational Psychologists. Depending on the pupils needs, support is then offered either in-class or using withdrawal lessons in case the pupil is on a reduced timetable.

Should you require to discuss specific needs of your child and the support required within their learning experience at Peponi, please contact Mr Matu (SENCo) on fmatu@peponischool.org.

THE VALUE OF A MENTOR Michelle Wanjiku - School Counsellor

“The person you will be in 5 years is based on the books you read and the people you surround yourself with today.” When you look back at your life, you may see different people who played significant roles to get you to where you are. It could be a family member, a teacher, a friend, a neighbor or even a stranger. We all need a brain to pick, an ear to listen, a positive push in the right direction, a smile, a word of hope and a voice that reminds us that ‘we can do it’. A mentor plays a key role in helping you see what is possible in life. They allow you to see the hope in yourself and chart a path to make your goals a reality. Nobody can make it alone. We are all learning from others whether we are aware of it or not.

12.

Be intentional in choosing the people that you listen to, as their words will influence the direction of your life. Seek out mentors that challenge you to think for yourself. Surround yourself with people that spark the light within you rather dim your shine. This month, we gave this opportunity to our younger pupils by kicking off our mentoring program. Our Form 1 &2 and Shell pupils have someone to hold their hand as they navigate the journey of high school. Together, the mentors and mentees can grow wiser and become the highest version if themselves.

Workshop: Is leading a ‘Zero-waste’ lifestyle the way forward? Synopsis: In this session, Maria will discuss the importance of sustainable living. Sustainable living is a lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual’s use of the Earth’s natural address whether ‘zero-waste’ living is possible and how making eco-friendly swaps in your daily activities can reduce your carbon footprint and in return reduce your consumption of natural resources.

SHELL INDUCTION Eric Kanyiri - Extra-Curricular Peponi Shell pupils began the Michaelmas term with an adventurous and challenging programme in the lush dense Karura forest located within the outskirts of Nairobi city. The activity challenges, involved navigating through the forest whilst in groups, searching for various checkpoints points and solving puzzles and within a time limit of 50 minutes per challenge. The pupils had an awesome time, exploring the various caves within the forest and most of the Pupils got wet, as they unraveled the activity challenges by the waterfall that had been set out to test their cognitive skills. The Shell pupils all managed to complete the circuit and the activity challenges set out for them. It was clear to the instructors and teachers, that their resilience, fortitude and team spirit were strengthened, as they endeavoured to accomplish all the tasks set out for them. The outdoor programme provided the pupils with an opportunity to learn and improve on their map reading skills, teamwork and riddle solving competence. It was an afternoon of fun and learning for all the shell pupils.

14.

SEDGE HOUSE ADVENTURE DAY OUT Eric Kanyiri - Extra-Curricular

‘Only those who risk far can possibly find out how far they can go.’ Sedge House pupils were welcomed into the rigorous and challenging Peponi outdoor programme with a day of bustling activity at the Sigiria Obstacle course located within Karura forest at the outskirts of the City. The pupils exerted themselves and worked well together to maneuver and complete the obstacle course. Their resolve and team spirit were notable and praise worthy. The Peponi Activity department is keen to induce life skills to the pupils through adventure programmes set out in the wilderness and would like to encourage the pupils to stay fit and strong for more action and adventure awaits them in the coming days.

SHELL EXPLORATION DAY Report compiled by Danielle Kavuma - Shell Pupil

The day began with buses dropping us off in school. All Shell pupils were dressed in outdoor gear and hiking boots ready to start our adventure. Our tutors had briefed us on what to carry and wear for the day and promptly at 8:00am, we all met at the car park for registration and packing of the buses. The teachers briefed us and put us into groups and before long, we were off on our way, for our great adventure. The journey to Gatamaiyu Forest was very scenic. The undulating lush green tea farms in Limuru were breathtaking and the awesome views of the vast and expansive rift valley with its majestic mountains was enchanting and relaxing. The journey took us two hours and by the time we arrived, we were all looking forward to lunch. The guides and forest rangers briefed us on the programme and a history of the area.

We started the hike in various groups and were all very excited since the rangers and guides said that there were wild animals in the forest, which included elephants, my favorite animal. We walked to the waterfall area and it was very steep and slippery. Most of us struggled to get down and many of us slid down the slippery slope and ended up being muddy from head to toe. We took a group photo by the scenic and pristine waterfall and then climbed out of the river valley into the dense forest. That climb was epic and very challenging. The guides and teachers were all very helpful and they helped get us up the steep hills. The forest walk was scenic, though we did not get to see any animals. Probably, because of the noise people made. I enjoyed the walk immensely. We stopped for a break by a beautiful dam and managed to take another picture and get some much need rest. The walk back to camp involved climbing another steep hill and we got to camp exhausted. I really enjoyed going on a trip out of school and spending time with my friends. Many thanks to Mr. Kanyiri and the teachers for accompanying us and organising the trip. We had a lot of fun.

15.

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE Sister Agnes At Peponi school we have continued with the covid protocols as set out in our policy and MOH guidelines. Contact tracing and isolating once a positive covid case is reported continues. The blanket whole year isolation practised last year has however been replaced with only those in closest contact. All of our staff have been fully vaccinated together with their domestic workers. Amongst the pupil body quite a number of the pupils have been vaccinated especially those in Upper VI. Peponi School has now in stock a rapid antigen covid testing kit. This will be used on a need to basis within the school.

PEPONI FOREST SCHOOL / REFORESTATION PROJECT Robin Backhouse - Teacher of Biology Forms I and II have embarked on an ambitious and exciting project - to plant an indigenous forest on an area of the school site, and to incorporate our very own ‘Forest School’ within it! Over the last few weeks, the pupils have been drawing up designs and carrying out research. We have recruited a reforestation and botany expert (Herbert) who will be assisting us with this endeavour. Over the next few weeks we will begin preparing the land for the planting of the first seedlings. It is our hope and dream that this site will become a haven for the protection of native, threatened plant species such as the Meru Oak. On Friday 24th October, the pupils went on a field trip to Karura Forest where they visited the nursery and learned about the Science of reforestation. They came away inspired and enthused to get this project going. Watch this space for further updates!
