Music Beats Covid:

Our Initiative To Keep Marginalised Children Safe And Learning In Nairobi Current unprecedented circumstances have caused all schools to close nationwide. Especially for those living in poverty, schools are crucial not just for children’s learning, but also for their protection and nutrition. Therefore, risks to child well-being have significantly increased. Dignitas Project has been working on improving education in Kenya for over 10 years. We have been volunteering with them since 2017 as we believe that everyone has a right to education. We got in touch with the Dignitas Project to see how their students are coping during the pandemic and found out that they need more help. They are working hard to support children in Kawangware and Dandora. We also got introduced to Ingrid Munro and the Jamii Bora trust, who expressed that hunger is currently a huge problem for Mathare children. We wondered how we could help and decided to initiate an internet based music challenge called ‘Music Beats Covid’ in hopes to raise funds for these charities. The challenge is to post a video of yourself playing an instrument or singing on social media, donate to the cause and nominate others to do the same. This would be a way of spreading positivity as well as raising awareness. We researched how to use a crowd funding platform and chose ‘M-Changa’ which allows donations to be made by mpesa and credit card. We set up social media pages to promote the challenge. Reeyan, a student at Kenton College, joined our team. We started the challenge by uploading our appeal videos and tagged others. We have been actively encouraging and appreciating all our contributors. The challenge was launched on Friday 8th May and has involved people from all over the world from toddlers to grandparents to share their music and support. People from all year groups at school have also contributed in the challenge. To date, over 100 people have joined the challenge, including 30 who are P2 students. So far, we have raised just over KES 370,000/How The Funds Are Going To Be Used Dignitas Project have trained 1000+ teachers in the past 10 years. As these teachers are no longer at school or being paid, they are supporting them to become ‘Community Champions’ who become responsible for looking after the wellbeing and continued learning of households in Dandora and Kawangware. Support is given by phone calls and delivery of essentials and learning materials. 1200/- supports the well-being and learning of 1 household for 1 month. Jamii Bora Trust will use the money to give to straight to vetted households for food. This exercise is being overlooked by Ingrid Munro. They will also give the money to traders in Mathare who can stock up their kiosks with food. This way the money given to households is spent within the settlement food shops. Therefore the money has twice the impact as the economy runs and households get fed. 1000/- feeds a family for 1 week, but has twice the impact.

A Simple Cardio Workout At Home, With No Equipment

“You have to exercise, or at some point you’ll just break down.” Barack Obama

Man! Another 21 days! You know initially when the second cessation and curfew season was coming to an end, I was hopeful that our corridors of learning would be open sooner than we expected. Of course this was wishful thinking, as the current statistics of the spread OF COVID- 19 in our country prove otherwise. All in all, let us continue to stay safe and remain in the comfort of our homes as much as we can. As we continue to bear the claws of this pandemic and get accustomed to virtual learning as our new normal, getting some exercise in our, is vital not only physically but also psychologically. A simple, consistent, convenient workout regime needs to be slotted into our daily timetables. Good nutrition will also go a long way in keeping bodies fueled the workouts. Being A Lifelong Learner

Lifelong learning is the pursuit of knowledge for either personal or professional reasons. Learning is and should be a continuous process. Here are a few quotes from great people to jog your mind. Learning how to learn is the most important thing you’ll ever learn – Janet Piskurich Never stop learning. School can teach you many things but the world has knowledge that extends beyond classrooms. Be open to it – @Medina Tweets Education isn’t a few years learning process. It’s lifelong till the end of life process – Shivani Agrawal Learning will positively transform your life, blooming into a distinguished valuable being - Anonymous Being a Life Long Reader Lifelong readers continue reading beyond their normal school lessons. This is because proficiency in reading is an important skill to have. Did you know that - Readers are Better Learners? Do you want to bake a cake? Unless you know the recipe by heart, you will need to be able to read a cookbook. Going on a road trip? The ability to read a map and road signs will be essential. Catching up on current events? Reading a newspaper is a must! Did you know that; Readers are More Successful? There’s no doubt about it: Reading is good for us. Whether it’s Dr. Seuss or the Game of Thrones series, diving into a story does more than just ignite imagination and transport us to an alternate reality. Some of the most successful people in the world – from Oprah and Bill Gates to Phil Knight and Elon Musk, credit much of their success to books. While they have different accomplishments, they view books in the same way, a path toward learning. It’s that path that likely makes readers more successful in their careers and finances. A Special Message For Year 8 Pupils Moving from Peponi House to Peponi School was a big jump to say the least. When you finish prep school you understand that the amount of control parents and teachers had over your life was very helpful but now you have to start doing things by yourself and that isn’t scary it just means you are going to become more independent. My only piece of advice, looking back, would be to just enjoy yourself more and make sure you understand that the simplicity of your lives at school should be capitalised on. So, try and do as much as you can to learn new things because currently time is all that we seem to have. Even if it’s simply appreciating the friends you were used to seeing every day with a phone call that’s only five minutes in a day, keep yourself occupied and know that the world will return to the way it was as soon as it can. If we emerge from this to find a different type of normal that we might have to adjust to, that is a challenge we will face, for now hang in there. To all the Year 8s, good luck in your Common Entrance exams. I hope that you’ve all been working hard and that is all anyone can ever ask from you regardless of the result, give this your all and trust in the process. If you ever find yourself stressed or overwhelmed as I can imagine, this being your first set of externally marked exams, just put everything into perspective and know that a lot of other students your age are going through the exact same thing in terms of having to still keep focus and work when the current state of global affairs are extremely unsettling. Support and togetherness are a necessity now more than ever but knowing how Peponi Pupils work, this will be a great story to tell once it’s all over.

Recipe from Chef Silvester Modern Salad Niçoise Ingredients

Method

60 ml (¼ cup) lemon juice

Place the lemon juice, garlic and 120ml of olive oil in a jar with a screw-top lid. Season and shake the jar well to combine.

1 garlic clove, crushed 140 ml olive oil 400 g (14 oz) waxy potatoes, such as Charlotte or kipfler 3 eggs 125 g (4½ oz) green beans, trimmed 1 green capsicum (pepper), seeded and sliced 120 g black olives 300 g (10½ oz) firm, ripe tomatoes, cut into wedges 100 g (3½ oz) cucumber, cut into chunks 3 spring onions (scallions), cut into 2 cm (¾ inch) pieces 600 g (1 lb 5 oz) tuna steaks

Boil the potatoes in a saucepan of salted water, for 10-20 minutes or until tender. Add the eggs for the final 8 minutes of cooking. Drain, cool the eggs under cold water, then peel and quarter. Cool the potatoes then cut into chunks. Bring a saucepan of salted water to the boil, add the green beans and blanch for 3 minutes. Drain and fresh under cold water. Drain well, and then slice in half on the diagonal. Place the potatoes and beans in large bowl, and add the capsicum, olives, tomatoes, cucumber and spring onion. Strain the garlic from the dressing, then shake again so it is combined. Pour half over the salad, toss and transfer to serving dish. Heat a frying pan over very high heat. Add the remaining olive oil and allow to heat. Season the tuna steaks well on both sides and cook for 2 minutes on each side, or until rare. Allow the tuna to cool for 5 minutes, then slice thinly. Arrange on top of the salad with the eggs, and drizzle with the remaining dressing. Serves:
