Being African

What does it mean to be African? In reminiscing what it means to be an African, the beginning of the “I am an African” speech by former South African president Thabo Mbeki rings in my head. Perhaps, there is no better way of narrating what it means to be an African other than reflecting on this story,- UBUNTU.

An anthropologist proposed a game to a group of African tribal children. He placed a basket of sweets near a tree and made the children stand 11 meters away. Then announced that whoever reaches first will get all the sweets in the basket. When he said “ready, steady go!”… Do you know what the children did? They all held each other’s hands, ran together towards the tree, divided the sweets equally among themselves, ate the sweets and enjoyed it. When asked by the anthropologist why they did so, they answered “Ubuntu.” Which meant, ‘how can one be happy when the others are sad?’ Ubuntu in their language means, “I am because we are”

The Ubuntu narrative makes me a proud African son. All over the continent, the natural beauty of Africa is unmatched. The cultural diversity, the food, the wildlife and the scenic mountains, oceans and the shared historical past borders the gratification one gets in being an African. There is no doubt that Africans take pride in their culture. They take bragging rights in who they are which is showcased in their rich and creative clothing and beautiful architectural housing designs. From the Maasai Manyattas in Kenya, the split bamboo plaited roundhouse by Sidama people in Ethiopia, to the West Africans folk dressing that is usually engulfed in a multitude of embroideries and robes, in addition to the beads worn around the collar, brass and earrings completing the women regalia in wedding ceremonies, Africa is beautifully endowed.

The African culture is deeply rooted in traditional spirit where people are concerned with others to the point that you cannot pass a person without getting to know how they are doing. It doesn't matter where you are in Africa, you will feel a sense of belonging. Africa is one place that welcomes you no matter who you are. The arts and crafts, which is as a result of creativity of the locals features in our homes and decorates our hotels, all flows with a similar theme connecting our essence with the nature which they feature.

Despite coming from a history of pain as part of the long lasting consequence of colonialism, Africans are resilient. We have continued to prove to the world that we are not defined by our past but rather by our love in togetherness, our humility and the belief in uplifting each other. For a first-hand experience, imagine an African cultural festival without an appetizing and mouth-watering cuisine prepared from a variety of locally available fruits such as cereals, vegetables, animal products and indigenous herbs. Being an African is not complete without sampling the melodious musical notes Africans sing and the accompanying dances that flow to the rhythm and the beats of drums, rattles, shakers regardless of the occasion. Everywhere you go you can't miss to hear African music filling the airwaves - a testimony of how many adore the music. In conclusion, the fine weather throughout the year cemented in the glow of moon and stars at night complete an awesome experience and privileged that defines what is it to be an African.

Asthma What Is Asthma? Asthma is a common condition that affects the airways, the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. When a person with Asthma comes into contact with something that irritates their airways, which is called an asthma trigger, the muscles around the walls of the airways tighten so that the airways become narrower and the lining of the airways becomes inflamed, starting to swell. Asthma has varying levels of severity from mild, moderate to severe.

Signs and Symptoms Breathing difficulties Chest tightness Coughing and wheezing

Healthy airways

Airways of someone with asthma

What You Should Know COVID-19 is an illness that affects the lungs and airways and because the virus causes shortness of breath, it can trigger asthma attacks. It is important to know that currently there is no evidence of increased Covid-19 infection rates in people with asthma. Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that patients with asthma could be at greater risk, there are no published data to support this determination at this time. When any type of respiratory illness is spreading in the community it is extremely important that you manage your asthma condition as well as possible.

The steps you take to avoid the flu and other respiratory infections will also help protect you from COVID-19 1. Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 to 30 seconds, and always after coughing or sneezing. 2. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser 3. Do not, touch your eyes, nose or mouth. 4. Stay away from people who are sick or have been in contact with someone who is sick. 5. Wear a face mask while in public. Asthma Management Tips Continue your current medications to keep it under control. This will help cut your risk of an Asthma attack being triggered by any respiratory virus, including corona virus. Carry your reliever inhaler with you every day, in case you feel your asthma symptoms flaring up. Recognise and manage asthma symptoms when they come on. Do not, stop any medications or change your asthma treatment plan without talking to your asthma specialist. Make sure that you have medications and supplies on hand in case you need to stay home for a long time. Avoid your asthma triggers. Clean and disinfect things you or your family touch frequently If possible, have someone who does not have asthma do the cleaning and disinfecting. When they use cleaning and disinfecting products; 1. Make sure that people with asthma are not in the room 2. Minimise use of disinfectants that can cause an asthma attack Conclusion The most important thing is to have your asthma well-controlled so that if infection does occur, your lungs are better able to handle the virus.

History and Cultural International Trips Over the last 3 years, the Humanities Faculty had the privilege to organize some of the most memorable, educative and successful international trips that have cemented Peponi School as an institution that not only celebrates internationalism within its population, but also an academic center that physically takes the challenge to expose pupils to the real world of historical narrative and varied culture. Indeed, our trips to Poland, Germany, France, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Estonia, UAE and China have left our competitors in awe with many enquiring on how we managed to navigate territorial boundaries to destinations as far as Russia. Of importance is the value addition that our pupils have garnered, the experiences and memories long to be treasured after their life in Peponi School. It is evident that, they have become more knowledgeable on key historical events in addition to the value of appreciating other peoples’ culture with improved IGCSE and GCE grades as applaudable feedback. History from time immemorial is known to shape and steer the increasingly complex and dynamic world into what humanity would desire to be a better place. It is paramount to emphasise that failure to learn from the historical past could lead to a disastrous future. A case reference can be inferred from the causes of World War 2 where failures to learn from the mistakes of World War 1 heavily contributed to the 2nd war.

Poland, Germany, and France 2017 My first international trip at Peponi School began with a historical tour of Poland. Having taught the atrocities committed by the Nazis during the 2nd World War, it was a high time pupils in lower and upper 5th embarked on a fact finding mission of the reasons behind Hitler’s determination to not only isolate Jews in Germany and countries annexed by the Nazis, but also subjecting them to dehumanising regulations and random acts of violence in an implemented policy that came to be known as the “Final Solution.” Auschwitz, also known as Auschwitz-Birkenau, opened in 1940 and was the largest of the Nazi concentration and death camps. This was our 2nd pit stop after connecting from DXB. Armed with a professional tour guide, the group learnt that, Auschwitz initially served as a detention center for political prisoners. However, it evolved into a network of camps where Jewish people and other perceived enemies of the Nazi state were exterminated, often in gas chambers, or used as slave labor. Some prisoners were also subjected to barbaric medical experiments led by Josef Mengele (1911-79). From Poland in a luxurious coach drive through the countryside into Berlin Germany, it was a dream come true for many to finally visit Check Point Charlie, the only official exit and entry point into the east and west of Berlin behind the “Iron Curtain” after the construction of the Berlin wall. Historically, the Wall stood as a symbol of oppression for almost three decades creating a nation of divided citizens. The imposing wall is one of the most iconic structures of the 21st century and its reach could be felt all around the world. Other fascinating visits took us to the German Resistance Memorial Centre, Haus der Wannsee-Konferenz and the Berlin Flak Tower. The twelve days tour culminated with a series of frenzy shopping moments within and around famous shopping malls in Paris, an amazing site visit to the Eiffel Tower and a final day of adventurous and exciting activities at the Disneyland Park and Walt Studios.

Recipe from Chef Silvester Samosas These tasty and filling parcels can be eaten at any time of the day.

Makes about 20

Method

1 packet 25cm/10in square spring roll wrappers, thawed if frozen

Preparation: 8 minutes; cooking: 12 minutes

30 ml/2 tbsp plain (all-purpose) flour mixed to a paste with water Vegetable oil, for deep frying coriander (cilantro) leaves, to garnish For the filling 25g/ 1oz/ 2tbsp ghee or unsalted butter 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 cm/ ½ in piece fresh root ginger, peeled and chopped 1 garlic glove, crushed 2.5 ml/ ½ tsp chilli powder 1 large potato, about 225g/ 8oz, cooked until just tender and finely diced 50g/ 2oz/ ½ cup frozen peas, thawed 5 – 10ml/ 1 tsp garam masala

Heat the ghee or butter in a large frying pan and fry the onion, ginger and garlic for 5 minutes until the onion has softened but not browned. Add the chilli powder and cook for 1 minute, then stir in the potato, cauliflower and peas. Sprinkle with garam masala and set a side to cool. Stir in the chopped coriander, lemon juice and salt. Cut the spring roll wrappers into three strips (or two for larger samosas). Brush the edges with a little of the flour paste. Place a small spoonful of filling about 2cm/ ¾ in in from the edge of one strip. Fold one corner over the filling to make a triangle and continue this folding until the entire strip has been used and a triangular pastry has been formed. Seal any open edges with more flour and water paste. Heat the oil for deep frying to 1900C / 3750F and fry the samosas, a few at a time, until golden and crisp. Drain well on kitchen paper and serve hot garnished with coriander leaves.

15ml/ 1tbsp chopped fresh coriander (leaves and stems) Squeeze of lemon juice salt
