Transition The A level class has now finished their secondary school education and it’s now time to transit to the next phase of life. All too often in life, we find ourselves confronted with wonderful phases of life that inevitably and by design come to an end. Life is not designed to be static and unmovable. Instead, it is dynamic and continuously confronts us with change. Whether we like it or not, change cannot be avoided.

Tips to help manage transition Recognise that transitions hold a special place in your life memories Moving actually is a big thing; it’s something you will remember for years, if not decades. Rather than trying to shove it out of your consciousness because it is so inherently arduous, give it the respect it deserves as an organising principle of your life.

“Look on every exit as being an entrance somewhere else.” Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead

Appreciate the benefits of change Changes in routine can serve as stimulation to your stagnant nervous systems and allow you to grow new neural pathways. Remember the times you’ve successfully navigated a previous transition As you face a new challenge, use the knowledge that you have managed to cope before to give you strength. Turn to your support network Research has shown that social support is one of the most significant keys to successfully managing change. Engage with people who have gone or are going through similar experiences. This will give you an emotional boost, as well as some practical tips.

Anapylaxis This is a severe and potentially life threatening allergic reaction. It happens within minutes or seconds of exposure or ingestion of an Allergen. Causes Food allergies e.g. Peanuts and other nuts, Milk, Eggs, Fish, Shell fish etc. NB. The reaction can be triggered by smell or touch in some people. Stings or bites e.g. Bees, wasps, hornets and spiders. Venoms e.g. Following a poisonous snake bite. Medications e.g. Penicillin, NSAIDs i.e. Brufen, Aspirin etc. Latex.

Signs and Symptoms Generalised skin rash with hives Swollen eyes, lips, tongue and throat Difficulty breathing. This can progress to respiratory distress. An Asthmatic patient may develop a severe asthmatic attack. Nausea and vomiting with abdominal pains. Feeling light headed. Rapid weak pulse. Sudden drop in blood pressure. Collapse and loss of consciousness. A diagnosis of Anaphylaxis is made if 3 of the above symptoms are observed and there has been exposure or ingestion of an Allergen. How do you manage Anaphylaxis? This is a Medical Emergency and needs swift action as it can be Fatal. Position the patient in Recovery position and ensure the airway is clear. Administer the Epi-pen (This is a pre-packed single dose of epinephrine injection) into the muscle for those patients already carrying one. (Usually, those who have had a previous reaction this has already been prescribed) Call an Ambulance to evacuate the patient to hospital.

Precautionary Measures At Peponi School, all parents and guardians are advised to disclose to the school any allergies that the pupils may be suffering from. Those pupils with an epi-pen prescription are reminded to carry one at all times in their bags. An extra epi-pen is also kept in the clinic. All staff members have had first aid training and a demonstration of how to use the epi-pen is given. The nurses also go through this demonstration with the teacher who may be accompanying the pupil on a school trip. A list of all pupils with allergies is also circulated to the teachers and house parents in P.A.S.S. The school has a policy with A.A.R medical services for emergency evacuations in case of an emergency in school or on school trips. The school is a nut free environment.

History and Cultural International Trips Over the last 3 years, the Humanities Faculty had the privilege to organise some of the most memorable, educative and successful international trips that have cemented Peponi School as an institution that not only celebrates internationalism within its population, but also an academic center that physically takes the challenge to expose pupils to the real world of historical narrative and varied culture. Indeed, our trips to Poland, Germany, France, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Estonia, UAE and China have left our competitors in awe with many enquiring on how we managed to navigate territorial boundaries to destinations as far as Russia. Of importance is the value addition that our pupils have garnered, the experiences and memories long to be treasured after their life in Peponi School. It is evident that, they have become more knowledgeable on key historical events in addition to the value of appreciating other peoples’ culture with improved IGCSE and GCE grades as applaudable feedback. History from time immemorial is known to shape and steer the increasingly complex and dynamic world into what humanity would desire to be a better place. It is paramount to emphasise that failure to learn from the historical past could lead to a disastrous future. A case reference can be inferred from the causes of World War 2 where failures to learn from the mistakes of World War 1 heavily contributed to the 2nd war.

Russia, Finland, Estonia, Sweden, and UAE 2018 After the immense successes of the 2017 tour, the urge to educate our pupils on the causes of revolutionary movements informed the need to craft and execute the 2018 Russian tour. The Romanov family was the last imperial dynasty to rule Russia. They first came to power in 1613, and over the next three centuries, 18 Romanovs took the Russian throne, including Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Alexander I and Nicholas II. A strong team of 29 enthusiastic historians signed up for this tour. Cementing their theoretical knowledge learnt in class, the violent Russian Revolution of 1917 marked the end of the Romanov dynasty and centuries of Russian Imperial rule. During the Russian Revolution, the Bolsheviks, led by leftist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin, seized power and destroyed the tradition of Czarist rule. The Bolsheviks would later become the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Czar Nicholas II and his entire family including his young children were later executed by Bolshevik troops. In honour of the heroic Lenin, we braved the harsh subzero Moscow temperature in a long snaking queue to pay our tribute to the founding further of communism in Russia in Red Square where his body lies in state to date. To surmount our nostalgic curiosity, a visit to Bunker 42, the nerve center of Stalin’s control of events during the heightened cold war tension between the East and the West took us 75 meters into the interior of the earth’s surface. Here, one of us had the privilege of launching a simulated nuclear war head with its apocalyptic effects leaving us tightly lipped if the same was to occur in real life. A tour of Russia would not be complete without a visit to Catherine’s Palace and the Winter Place in St. Petersburg. Some of the amazing highlights of this trip included a scenic tour of Helsinki on day 6, an overnight cruise voyage to Tallinn which was followed by a historic rich tour of the city. The trip’s show-stopper was a luxury adventure to Ferrari World in addition to the treat of a desert safari and the sampling of the Arabic cuisine under the clear skies of Dubai.

Self Watering Plant D.I.Y. self watering plants/ hydroponic system By Janav Shah - Lower 5th.

At the beginning

10 days later

2.5 weeks later

Materials used: plastic container, a metal can, and substrate/ soil. The tissue was used to secure the soil in place from eroding. Nutrients like potassium, calcium are added to the substrate. Don’t over water to avoid a rotting/foul smell. If the water becomes hot you must change it this causes bacterial diseases to invade your plant. I created this in order to let the plant use gravity to get the required water it needs, instead of me watering it. This is done in nature when a plant uses gravity to get the required nutrients and water, small resemblance of nature, indoor plant. Pros are you use less water and it requires less effort. Cons are that it causes water bone diseases, contamination of water because of stagnation.

Shell Art Recreations Here is me sitting trying to get the exact pose of the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. I created her old dress by wearing a black top and I wrapped myself in a brown pashmina. I set my phone on a timer in order to get the angle and the photo just right

Alexandra Kontos

“Doctor of Soviet Krygzstan” In the potrait I used a white dress to look like the girl’s and a red head scarf like her’s. I also ensured to have the same color books (brown). The background might not be similar but I heavily thrived to make it look similar

I chose to create “The Plate of Apples” by Paul Cezanne painted in 1877. I recreated with an up to date twist of hand sanitiser and a mask

Recipe from Chef Silvester Sweet-and-sour Lamb Buy lamb onion chops from your butcher and ask him to French trim them for you. Serve with steamed carrots or green beans.

Ingredients

Method Serves 4

8 French-trimmed lamb loin chops 90ml/ 6tbsp balsamic vinegar 30ml/ 2tbsp caster (superfine) sugar From the Store cupboard 30ml/ 2tbsp olive oil Salt and ground black pepper

Put the lamb chops in a shallow, non-metallic dish and drizzle over the balsamic vinegar. Sprinkle with the sugar and season with salt and black pepper. Turn the chops to coat in the mixture, then cover with clear film (plastic wrap) and chill for 20 minutes. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and add the chops, reserving the marinade. Cookfor 3-4 minutes on each side. Pour the marinade into the pan and leave to burble for about 2 minutes, or until reduced slightly. Remove from the pan and serve immediately.

Quotes of the day

“Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.”

“A good laugh is sunshine in the house.”

William Makepeace Thackeray Martin Luther King Jr.

“If you want peace, you don’t talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies.” Desmond Tutu

“When written in Chinese, the word ‘Crisis’ is composed of two characters. One represents danger and the other represents opportunity.” John F. Kennedy

You are the sum total of everything you've ever seen, heard, eaten, smelled, been told, forgot - it's all there. Everything influences each of us, and because of that I try to make sure that my experiences are positive.
