FROM THE PRESIDENT
ASCENDTOGE THER I’m so pleased that you chose to join us tonight. Thank you for all you have done to make Pepperdine what it is today. In addition to great entertainment and the chance to catch up with old friends, I have an exciting future to share with you this evening. As you know, Pepperdine has traveled an uncommonly steep trajectory toward becoming one of the great academic universities in the country. But we are not finished yet—not even close. We believe we are trying to do something that no one else in higher education is trying to do. We are in a lane of our own. There are many excellent academic institutions around the country, but what sets Pepperdine apart is the inseparable intertwining of the highest standards of academic excellence and authentic Christian faith. Students at Pepperdine experience a genuine transformative process that challenges their minds, inspires their hearts, and feeds their souls. Right now, the world urgently needs new leaders—leaders of character and competence. That is why we exist—to shape brilliant young minds to influence the world for good, to ignite in them a deep sense of purpose that their lives matter and that they can make a diference, and to hone their leadership skills to instill the confidence to pursue important things. It is increasingly rare to find people who are trained as capable thought leaders who also possess an impeccable moral compass and the ethical fortitude to rise to positions of global influence. But that is precisely our mandate. I look forward to sharing with you tonight some of the ways we plan to ascend this aspirational mountain together. I hope you are inspired tonight about the future of Pepperdine, and I am grateful for your continuing support and encouragement.
JIM GASH President and CEO

Last year, she returned for her second time to NBC’s The Voice alongside Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Kelly Clarkson and for her third time and winning coach to season eight of The Voice UK alongside coaches Tom Jones, will.i.am, and Olly Murs. Hudson’s song, “I’ll Fight,” written by Grammy-winning songwriter Diane Warren for the critically acclaimed documentary RBG, was nominated for a 2019 Academy Award. In 2007 Hudson won an Academy Award for her role as Efie in the smash hit Dreamgirls, an adaptation of the Broadway musical. In addition to improving our campus landscape, they have strengthened the academic life of the University by establishing the Mullin Endowed Scholarship for Seaver College students pursuing degrees in math and science. Their monumental support will also make possible Mullin Park, a beautiful expanse of lawn, trees, and outdoor spaces that will serve as the site of the future Student Recreation and Events Center. Generous of heart and spirit, the Mullins’ remarkable legacy will enhance the lives of our students for generations to come.

Geofrey H. Palmer (JD ’75) Real estate developer Geof Palmer has lef an indelible legacy in Southern California with ventures such as the Da Vinci and Broadway Palace. His legacy at Pepperdine is assured as well—in 2006 he endowed the Palmer Center for Entrepreneurship and the Law, whose innovative legal and business programs are now being copied at universities across the country. He endowed the Geofrey H. Palmer Chair in Real Estate this past year to help expand the center’s curriculum. We are proud to celebrate the Palmer Center’s 20th anniversary this spring. Supporting business education throughout Greater Los Angeles, he recently established the Geofrey H. Palmer Real Estate Finance Program at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business.

Growing the scholarship with annual contributions, Marilyn continues to expand the Puckett legacy of service at Pepperdine. A pioneer aerospace engineer and Chairman Emeritus of Hughes Aircraf Company, Allen received the University’s highest award, an honorary doctorate of laws, in 1984. We are pleased to extend our sincere gratitude to Marilyn for her enduring support.

Her engagement in Malibu civic life brought her into contact with former Pepperdine president and first lady Norvel and Helen (’39) Young, who inspired her to invest in the University. The most obvious evidence of her legacy at Pepperdine is the Lisa Smith Wengler Center for the Arts, but she has also provided important support for eforts such as scholarships, the Boone Center for the Family, and the Sudreau Global Justice Program. A member of the University Board, Lisa’s generosity continues to strengthen and inspire our Pepperdine community.

Jim and Joline, The Runnels are excited to welcome you as the new trailblazers for our beloved Pepperdine family. We pledge to stand with you in your mission and on this journey. Charlie Runnels always expressed to our children and grandchildren, and the Pepperdine family, that there are trees yet to plant and hills yet to climb, and he never wavered from that belief. He was one of the few to turn the first shovel of dirt on this Malibu campus, and we know he would be proud of your vision for our future. The Runnels are here tonight in solidarity with you, and we look forward to ascending together.
With love and admiration,
AMY JO RUNNELS AND FAMILY
