FROM THE PRESIDENT

ASCENDTOGE THER I’m so pleased that you chose to join us tonight. Thank you for all you have done to make Pepperdine what it is today. In addition to great entertainment and the chance to catch up with old friends, I have an exciting future to share with you this evening. As you know, Pepperdine has traveled an uncommonly steep trajectory toward becoming one of the great academic universities in the country. But we are not finished yet—not even close. We believe we are trying to do something that no one else in higher education is trying to do. We are in a lane of our own. There are many excellent academic institutions around the country, but what sets Pepperdine apart is the inseparable intertwining of the highest standards of academic excellence and authentic Christian faith. Students at Pepperdine experience a genuine transformative process that challenges their minds, inspires their hearts, and feeds their souls. Right now, the world urgently needs new leaders—leaders of character and competence. That is why we exist—to shape brilliant young minds to influence the world for good, to ignite in them a deep sense of purpose that their lives matter and that they can make a diference, and to hone their leadership skills to instill the confidence to pursue important things. It is increasingly rare to find people who are trained as capable thought leaders who also possess an impeccable moral compass and the ethical fortitude to rise to positions of global influence. But that is precisely our mandate. I look forward to sharing with you tonight some of the ways we plan to ascend this aspirational mountain together. I hope you are inspired tonight about the future of Pepperdine, and I am grateful for your continuing support and encouragement.

JIM GASH President and CEO

Last year, she returned for her second time to NBC’s The Voice alongside Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Kelly Clarkson and for her third time and winning coach to season eight of The Voice UK alongside coaches Tom Jones, will.i.am, and Olly Murs. Hudson’s song, “I’ll Fight,” written by Grammy-winning songwriter Diane Warren for the critically acclaimed documentary RBG, was nominated for a 2019 Academy Award. In 2007 Hudson won an Academy Award for her role as Efie in the smash hit Dreamgirls, an adaptation of the Broadway musical. DIAMOND WAVE SOCIETY Tina and Rick (JD ’83) Caruso Prolific business innovator, philanthropist, and dedicated civic leader Rick Caruso and his wife, Tina, have made extraordinary contributions to Pepperdine for the past 40 years. They have established the Caruso Family Chair in Law, and supported a loan forgiveness program, research fellowship, and major renovations at the law school. Last year they lef their most significant and enduring mark on Pepperdine yet, with a transformative $50 million gif that renamed the school the Rick J. Caruso School of Law. Their remarkable gif will expand educational access to exceptional, underserved student populations and enhance the academic programming of our law school in meaningful ways. Pepperdine is pleased to recognize Rick and Tina for their overwhelming generosity and steadfast confidence in our mission. Paula and Edwin Biggers Paula and Ed Biggers have a rich history of love and support for Pepperdine. They are proud parents and grandparents of Pepperdine alumni and faithfully serve on the advisory board of the Boone Center for the Family. Ed, a US Naval Academy alumnus, served a three-decade career with Hughes Aircraf, including years as president of its Missile Group and a consultant to the Department of Defense, and shared a lifetime of amazing leadership skills as the former chair of Pepperdine’s Board of Regents. Through the Brenden Mann Foundation, Johnny has shown incredible support for the University by funding the Brenden Mann Israel Internship Program and the Brenden Mann Scholars Program. We are proud to have the Brenden Mann Foundation as part of the Pepperdine family.

Alida and Stevan Calvillo Building on a remarkable legacy of support, Alida and Stevan Calvillo have strengthened their commitment to the University over the years. Alida’s parents, George and Reva Graziadio, who shared a close friendship with former Pepperdine president and first lady Norvel and Helen (’39) Young, endowed the Graziadio Business School in 1996. Extending the Graziadio-Pepperdine connection, Stevan serves as chair of the Graziadio Board, and together they continue to provide meaningful support for our graduate business programs. Alida is a Life Associate, a member of the Friends of the Family League, and an accomplished painter. The Calvillos love to travel and spend time with their two daughters’ families and their six grandchildren.

Active in their community, the Ensios are longtime members of Catalina Foothills Church, PCA, where Mark serves as an elder. They have provided generous support for scholarships and Seaver College’s Natural Science programs through the years, with their recent commitment to The Mountain—Pepperdine’s future Student Recreation and Events Center—serving as a testament to their continuing confidence in our mission.

Darlene Fauber Darlene Fauber and her late husband, Bernard, established the Ben and Darlene Fauber Endowed Scholarship for Seaver College students majoring in teacher education. Bernard, a Virginia native, started working at a Kresge store as a stockroom clerk and worked his way up the ladder (afer naval duty in WWII) to become Kmart Corporation’s CEO and chairman of the board. The Faubers were recognized by many organizations and charities for their generous giving, and Bernard was honored as Virginian of the Year. Afer retiring, the Faubers moved to Ojai and raised Morgan horses and cultivated apple orchards, enjoyed traveling around the US in their Prevost motorcoach, and eventually moved to Pauma Valley, which is Darlene’s home today.

Phillips invited both of them to speak at a University Board meeting; they married in 1990 and continue to be loyal law alumni. Michelle is a Pepperdine regent and Mark is co-chair of the law school’s Board of Advisors. Together they founded the Law Ofices of Hiepler & Hiepler, a plaintifs’ trial litigation firm specializing in bad-faith insurance cases on behalf of wronged individuals and people with catastrophic injuries. Their son Ryan is a 1L student at the Caruso School of Law; his wife, Emily, works at the law school’s Parris Institute; son Paul attends Abilene Christian; and daughter Sarah is a graduate of Oxford University.

Blanche and Peter James Johnson, Jr. We are delighted to honor Blanche and Peter Johnson at the Pepperdine Associates dinner this evening—particularly since they chaired our 2016 dinner committee and have sponsored the event every year since 2012, when their daughter Blanche (’15) was a freshman. Since then, their daughter Veronica (’17) has earned a Seaver College degree as well, and the Johnsons have only grown more committed in their support to the University. Peter, president of New York law firm Leahey & Johnson, has served as a Pepperdine regent for almost seven years, and the Johnsons have continued to generously underwrite the Peter and Veronica Johnson Endowed Scholarship at the School of Public Policy.

Deanne (’84) and John (’83) Lewis Distinguished alumni Deanne and John Lewis have a deep and enduring connection to Pepperdine. The two met as Seaver College students and were married at Staufer Chapel, and their children—Tim (’10) and Mindy (’15, JD ’18)—are Pepperdine graduates. A Pepperdine regent, John is a CPA and president of Eugene Lewis & Associates. Deanne is a founding member of the Alumni Leadership Council and a dedicated community volunteer. The Lewises are part of the church planting team of Vintage Church Pasadena and are supporters of ministries assisting homeless and low-income families in the Pasadena area. We are grateful for John and Deanne’s continuing leadership and extraordinary commitment to the Pepperdine community.

Ernest M. Maldonado (BSM ’76, MP ’80) Ernest Maldonado is a graduate and generous supporter of the Pepperdine School of Public Policy. He also serves on the executive board for his charity Future for Kids. Scott is active in supporting The Mountain events center project at the University and is the proud father of two daughters, Siena, who studies at California Lutheran University, and Shea, a Seaver College student.

We are grateful for their ongoing support for life-changing opportunities that foster new cultural perspectives and diverse relationships.

Sharon and Terry Mullin Sharon and Terry Mullin are extraordinary champions of Pepperdine. Benefactors of the spectacular Mullin Town Square in the heart of the Malibu campus, the Mullins have created a vibrant hub of activity and fellowship for students, faculty, staf, and visitors. In addition to improving our campus landscape, they have strengthened the academic life of the University by establishing the Mullin Endowed Scholarship for Seaver College students pursuing degrees in math and science. Their monumental support will also make possible Mullin Park, a beautiful expanse of lawn, trees, and outdoor spaces that will serve as the site of the future Student Recreation and Events Center. Generous of heart and spirit, the Mullins’ remarkable legacy will enhance the lives of our students for generations to come.

Geofrey H. Palmer (JD ’75) Real estate developer Geof Palmer has lef an indelible legacy in Southern California with ventures such as the Da Vinci and Broadway Palace. His legacy at Pepperdine is assured as well—in 2006 he endowed the Palmer Center for Entrepreneurship and the Law, whose innovative legal and business programs are now being copied at universities across the country. He endowed the Geofrey H. Palmer Chair in Real Estate this past year to help expand the center’s curriculum. We are proud to celebrate the Palmer Center’s 20th anniversary this spring. Supporting business education throughout Greater Los Angeles, he recently established the Geofrey H. Palmer Real Estate Finance Program at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business.

Michael C. Palmer We honor Michael Palmer as a sustaining member of the George Pepperdine Society. Michael serves on Pepperdine’s University Board and is the parent of law graduate Alexandra Palmer Brand (JD ’09). A certified public accountant, he founded Parks, Palmer, Turner & Yemenidjian, LLP, a leading accounting firm, and is now a managing partner and cofounder of the California Real Estate Regional Center. Michael has extensive experience in the finance, real estate, and hospitality industries. He sits on the boards of the University of Southern California's Marshall School and the Children’s Burn Foundation. At the Caruso School of Law, Michael has established the Michael C. Palmer Endowed Scholarship and supports the Ken Starr Excellence Fund and Pepperdine’s London Law Program.

Marilyn Puckett Established in 2009 by Marilyn Puckett and her late husband, Allen, the Allen and Marilyn Puckett Endowed Scholarship at the School of Public Policy provides meaningful support for our graduate students. Growing the scholarship with annual contributions, Marilyn continues to expand the Puckett legacy of service at Pepperdine. A pioneer aerospace engineer and Chairman Emeritus of Hughes Aircraf Company, Allen received the University’s highest award, an honorary doctorate of laws, in 1984. Marilyn and her son Jim (MBA ’12), a member of the School of Public Policy Board of Advisors, are dedicated University friends. We are pleased to extend our sincere gratitude to Marilyn for her enduring support.

Lisa Smith Wengler A native of Germany, Lisa Smith Wengler met with immediate success in real estate when she arrived in Malibu in the 1970s. Her engagement in Malibu civic life brought her into contact with former Pepperdine president and first lady Norvel and Helen (’39) Young, who inspired her to invest in the University. The most obvious evidence of her legacy at Pepperdine is the Lisa Smith Wengler Center for the Arts, but she has also provided important support for eforts such as scholarships, the Boone Center for the Family, and the Sudreau Global Justice Program. A member of the University Board, Lisa’s generosity continues to strengthen and inspire our Pepperdine community.

Jim and Joline, The Runnels are excited to welcome you as the new trailblazers for our beloved Pepperdine family. We pledge to stand with you in your mission and on this journey. Charlie Runnels always expressed to our children and grandchildren, and the Pepperdine family, that there are trees yet to plant and hills yet to climb, and he never wavered from that belief. He was one of the few to turn the first shovel of dirt on this Malibu campus, and we know he would be proud of your vision for our future. The Runnels are here tonight in solidarity with you, and we look forward to ascending together.

With love and admiration,

AMY JO RUNNELS AND FAMILY

Congratulations, President Gash, and best wishes for success in leading the Pepperdine family to continue to accomplish all its goals in the years to come. NABIL AND CAMELIA BARSOUM
