WAVES TRACK & FIELD HEAD COACH ROBERT RADNOTI Radnoti’s cross country teams won three invitational titles during the 2009 regular season. The Pepperdine women’s team took first at the UC Riverside Invitational with 18 points, and then both his squads won at the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunner Invitational the following week.

In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Radnoti was active in fundraising and oversaw the construction of a new all-weather track. Thousand Oaks High School has produced numerous national recordholders and has an impressive group of alumni that includes Olympian Marion Jones.

The women’s cross country team went on to place fifth at the West Coast Conference Championships, while the men placed sixth. Chelsea Wishard finished third at the conference meet for the second straight year to become the first female harrier in program history to post consecutive top-five finishes at the 6K Crystal Springs’ course.

Before entering the high school coaching ranks, Radnoti served as founder and Chairman of the Board of the United States Corporate Athletic Association [USCAA]. Radnoti created the USCAA FitNews magazine, produced two nationally syndicated televised programs of the USCAA Championships (1991-92) and was the event director of the national championships in 1985, 1986, 1991, 1992 and 1998, where he negotiated the involvement of Carl Lewis, Edwin Moses and Anthony Kennedy Shriver.

Under Radnoti’s guidance, Wishard has led Pepperdine to the finish line through 13 straight races dating back to the start of the 2008 season. In addition to her bronze-medal showing at WCCs, Wishard also claimed first place at Bakersfield and placed among the top ten at Irvine and Riverside.

Robert Radnoti is in the midst of his fourth season as head coach of the Pepperdine men’s and women’s cross country and track and field teams, continuing his mission of leading these programs to national prominence.

The 2009 men’s cross country team featured two young up-and-coming runners in Kenny Smith and Wesley Blundell. Smith led Pepperdine to the finish line at both the WCC and NCAA West Regional meets, while Blundell averaged a second-place showing for the Waves through seven meets. Blundell’s best race took place at Bakersfield, where he finished third overall with a season and team best 8K of 25:15.90.

Radnoti joined the Pepperdine program as an assistant in January 2006 and brings a wealth of expertise, innovative ideas and abundant enthusiasm to the program.

A well-respected coach in Southern California, Radnoti was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the California Coaches Alliance. He speaks at various clinics and high schools throughout the country.

“This is really a dream come true for me,” Radnoti said, “To be able to step into a head coaching position at a Division I university is something I have always wanted to do. There is a strong foundation here at Pepperdine and I feel like the program is moving in the right direction to become one of the premier running programs in the nation. We have a great group of athletes coming in this season, lots of excitement with prospective student-athletes and I am confident both the cross country and track teams will continue to show growth and improvement.”

Prior to joining the Pepperdine staff, Radnoti enjoyed great success at Thousand Oaks High School. His track and field teams compiled a 209-12 overall record, while the cross country teams finished with a 416-17 mark in the tough Marmonte League in Ventura County. The high point of Radnoti’s tenure at Thousand Oaks came in 2005 when he led the girls’ cross country team to the California Division I state championship — the first-ever for the Thousand Oaks girls’ team.

Radnoti began as an assistant women’s track coach in the program’s first season of 2006, and would later become the full-time head coach in 2007. In 2008, Radnoti brought back men’s track to Pepperdine after a long absence. Radnoti’s student-athletes broke 17 varsity records last season in addition to shattering three Stotsenberg Track records. Six relay records were rewritten, as well as marks in the shot put and discus by Aneka Myles. On the track, Lauren Lodge led all Waves with three individual school records established in the 1500m (4:39.68), 3K (10:05.44) and steeplechase (10:54.93), while Brieanna Carroll left as Pepperdine’s leader in the 5K (17:59.34) and 10K (37:36.08). Conrad Wozniak broke a varsity record in the 3K at UC Santa Barbara, clocking a time of 8:41.02. Pepperdine’s sprinters also put forth a solid effort. Amanda Ajdari broke the school’s record in the 200m with her time of 25.56, and Bridgette Walker became Pepperdine’s all-time fastest runner in the 400m with her mark of 58.03.

A serious student of cross country and track and field, Radnoti has achieved his USATF Level II coaching certification. A native of Las Vegas, Nevada, Radnoti attended Greeley West High in Greeley, Colo., where he enjoyed a standout career. Radnoti held school records in all the distance races, the 880, mile and two mile. He finished as runner-up in the 1975 state cross country championships. Radnoti attended the University of Colorado, one of the premier distance-running programs in the nation, and enjoyed an outstanding four-year career. While a member of the Buffaloes, Radnoti qualified for and competed in two NCAA cross country championship events. After graduating with honors while earning a degree in chemical engineering, Radnoti moved to California, where he began a career as a chemical engineer at Exxon. While there, he formed and coached a professional corporate track and field team for 17 years before assuming the head coaching position at Thousand Oaks High in 1998. He also completed his MBA at UCLA while working full-time at Exxon. Radnoti resides in Malibu. He has two children, Kristina and Tom. Kristina graduated last year from Naropa University in Boulder, Colo. with a bachelor’s degree in contemplative psychology. Tom is a senior at Naropa.

PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

As Robert Radnoti settles into his fourth year as head coach of the Pepperdine University cross country and track teams, his strategic plan for the development of the team is progressing. Borrowing from his past work with Systems Thinking (i.e. Peter Senge’s The Fifth Discipline) in the corporate world, Coach Radnoti has developed his System of Cross Country/Track Excellence. This system starts with the program mission: To be the best running program in the nation for high performance student-athletes and committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values, where students are strengthened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership. There are 10 elements within Coach Radnoti’s System. They are: • Leadership (coaches, team captains, leadership and mentorship opportunities) • Athletes & Recruiting (identifying, tracking, scholarships, etc.) • Training & Education (plans, locations) • Competitions (selecting great competitions for our athletes’ development) • Parents & Alumni (connecting with both groups) • Compliance (NCAA rules, Pepperdine policies, team rules) • Facilities & Events (developing prestigious home events, upgrading our facilities) • Finance, Fundraising & Publicity (obtaining the funding needed for our plans) • Merchandise & Equipment (to be able to perform well and represent Pepperdine with class) • Lives of Purpose, Service & Leadership (being aligned with the Pepperdine mission) Within each element, the system includes the five characteristics of a system: scope and objectives, procedures, responsible and accountable resources, verification and measurement, and a feedback mechanism. Each process is then continually improved by a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Pepperdine Cross Country History

Track and field (along with baseball and basketball) was one of the first three intercollegiate sports sponsored by George Pepperdine College when the school first opened its doors at its South-Central Los Angeles location in 1937. Under the direction of head coach J. Eddie Weems, Pepperdine track and field teams quickly made their mark at local, regional and national competitions. For example, at the 1939 Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, the tandem of Froggie Lovvard, Jack Russell, Wally Simpson and Stanley Summers ran the two-mile relay in 7:43.40, a mark which stood for 15 years before it was finally broken. Weems and another former Pepperdine coach, Bert Brewer, are enshrined in the University’s Athletics Hall of Fame along with track and field standouts Terry Bell, Jack Bighead, Roy Burleson, Bill Johnson, Wixie Robinson, Jerome Walters and Don Whitney. In the mid-1960s, Ron Pettigrew and Harry Skandera were both All-American cross country runners for Pepperdine, and they are also a part of the University’s Athletics Hall of Fame. Although women’s intercollegiate athletics teams were not sponsored prior to the 1970s, female athletes from various schools still competed at local meets. Pepperdine standouts such as Terrezene Brown, Vilma Charlton and Marilyn White each competed at the Olympic Games, and are an important part of the University’s rich athletics heritage. Pepperdine men who competed in track at the Olympics include Walters, Alvis Andrews, David Kirkland and Pablo McNeil. Cross country and track and field were disbanded when the University moved its campus to Malibu in 1972. However, men’s and women’s cross country teams were reinstituted in the mid-1970s. The men’s West Coast Conference Championships date back to 1975, while the women began in 1985. Pepperdine’s women finished second at the WCC Championships in 1988, 1993 and 1999. The men’s team earned a best-ever third-place finish at the 1997 WCC Championships. Individually, Pepperdine women’s runners have won the WCC race three times. In 1988, Kari Baerg won the 2.98-mile event at the Crystal Springs course, located in Belmont, Calif., in a time of 18:31. The following year, Kim McElhinney duplicated that accomplishment, posting a time of 18:49 in a five-kilometer run at Crystal Springs. In 2000, Rebecca Freebury won the five-kilometer event in a time of 18:18. Chelsea Wishard has been the most decorated runner of the Robert Radnoti era thus far. Wishard is the first female runner in program history to post consecutive topfive finishes at the WCC Championships — placing third in 2008 and 2009 — and has led Pepperdine to the finish line over the last 13 races in which she has competed. Jason Kite posted the best-ever individual finish for the men in 1993 when he placed fifth, posting a time of 26:09 in an eight-kilometer run at the Crystal Springs course. Track made its debut on the Malibu campus when a women’s team was established for the first time in 2006, and the men’s team was reinstated in 2008.
