SEASON INFORMATION
SEASON OUTLOOK Fresh off claiming its 19th consecutive West Coast Conference crown in 2009, the Pepperdine men’s tennis team is poised to continue the winning tradition that has become a staple of the program during the last half-century. Head Coach Adam Steinberg is confident his 10-team squad — which features one senior, two juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen — has the depth to win consistently. “We have great depth, and that’s how you win in college tennis,” said Steinberg, the 2006 National Coach of the Year who is now in his eighth season. “I’m really looking forward to seeing these guys play this year, and from the top to the bottom of our lineup, we’re going to be really strong.” As the team’s lone senior, Bassam Beidas (Cairo, Egypt) will provide leadership and experience from the top. A two-time AllAmerican, Beidas enters the spring as the nation’s 90th-ranked singles player. Already this season, he has won singles titles at the ITA West-South Regional and the National Collegiate Tennis Classic. “Bassam is our best player and one of the best players in the country,” Steinberg said. “He has a chance to be a national champion this year in singles. He’s a great competitor who has improved so much during his four years. I look forward to him finishing his career on a high note this year.” The Waves’ veteran core also consists of juniors Alejandro Moreno (Queretaro, Mexico) and Stuart Keplar (Dallas, Texas), who Steinberg said will be the leaders of the team in 2010. Last season, Moreno posted a 12-17 record in singles. His performance in the classroom earned him WCC Commissioner’s Honor Roll “silver” honors, as well as a spot on the WCC All-Academic team. “Alex is another guy who has improved a lot,” Steinberg said. “I expect him to fight for a starting position this year. He’s our best student and is just a great teammate.” In 2009, Keplar played exclusively in doubles and recorded a 5-9 record. He also played a key role in the Waves’ 4-3 victory against Rice on March 27, rallying with teammate Alex Llompart to win the doubles point. “No one works harder than Stuart,” Steinberg said. “He wasn’t highly recruited like some of the other guys, but he keeps fighting to play doubles. He played a little bit last year and did a really great job for us.” Hugh Clarke (Brisbane, Australia), Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico), Daniel Moss (Malibu, Calif.) and Jenson Turner (Woodland Hills, Calif.) are the team’s returning sophomores. As a freshman, Clarke posted a 5-12 singles record and found success in doubles,
BASSAM BEIDAS finishing the season at 16-10. “Hugh is improving every day,” Steinberg said. “He is one of our best doubles players. I really look forward to him starting to improve in singles. His doubles play has been outstanding, and he will play number one doubles with Bassam this year.” Llompart, the 2009 WCC Freshman of the Year, enters the spring ranked at #70 in singles, according to the ITA. He recorded winning records in singles (22-6) and doubles (15-13) in 2009 to earn All-WCC first team honors. “Alex is a winner,” Steinberg said. “He’ll compete for the number two or three spot this year. I look for him to be one of the top 50 players in the country in 2010. He’ll play second doubles for us. He’s the heart and soul of our team, and how he goes, we go. He keeps winning and being successful and has a great attitude on and off the court.” Moss, a Malibu native, saw his share of action as a freshman, finishing at 3-2 in both singles and doubles. “Danny is our energizer. He’s made big strides in singles from last year,” Steinberg said. “Right now he is playing number six in the lineup. He’s the most intense, high-energy player I’ve ever coached. He brings so much to the team and works so hard every day. It’s great to have a local guy from Malibu playing at Pepperdine, and he takes a lot of pride in that.” Rounding out the sophomores is Turner, who is currently recovering from a back injury he suffered in the fall. In 2009, he posted 4-9 and 7-6 records in singles and
doubles, respectively. “Jenson has a world of talent and will be competing for a starting spot in singles and doubles,” Steinberg said. “He has really improved in the classroom, and his work ethic has also gotten better. He can be a great player if he can stay healthy.” The Waves’ freshman class consists of three newcomers: Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany), Mousheg Hovhannisyan (North Hollywood, Calif.) and Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand). Fanselow has already garnered national recognition, as he was ranked #96 in singles by the ITA in January. A 2009 graduate of the Kaplan College Preparatory School, Fanselow was ranked in the top 15 as an U-18 player in his native Germany, as well as in the top 150 among juniors by the ITF. “Sebastian is a guy that will play in the middle of our lineup this year,” Steinberg said. “He’s a great young player with a lot of power. I look for Sebastian to be an AllAmerican one day. He has that kind of ability. I think that Sebastian can hold his own with anybody, and we’re really excited about his potential and future.” Last year, Hovhannisyan was a member of the USTA national team in Boca Raton, Fla., and won the boys’ 18 doubles title at the Southern California Junior Sectional Championships. He also reached the semifinals in both the boys’ 18 singles and doubles events at the USTA National Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich. “Mousheg is a guy that will compete for our top three positions,” Steinberg said. “He has a world of talent and had a great junior tennis career. I look for Mousheg to be one of our best players today and in the years to come.” Tearney enters the spring ranked #52 in doubles with Llompart, according to the ITA. He was New Zealand’s top player in 2008 and was ranked among the top 75 juniors in the world in 2009. “Finn is a great person, and a real pleasure to have on the team,” Steinberg said. “He’s a very aggressive player that will compete from the middle of our lineup this year and play with Alex Llompart in doubles.” Last season, Steinberg’s squad made it to the second round of the NCAA Championships but fell short against Stanford. He said the team’s primary objective in 2010 is to make the Sweet 16 in Athens, Ga. “To make the Sweet 16 would be a very successful season,” said Steinberg, who is assisted by Nick Carless and Austin Doerner. “We missed it last year, so for this young team to get to the third round in the tournament would be a great success. That’s our primary goal this year.”

RALPHS-STRAUS TENNIS CENTER The Pepperdine men’s and women’s tennis teams play all of their home dual matches at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The nine-court, fully lighted facility was upgraded significantly during the 1992-93 school year. It served as the host site for the 1995 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championships, marking the first time an NCAA Championships event was held at Pepperdine. The University hosted the event again in May of 2000. The Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center has also hosted the 1996 women’s NCAA West Regional Championships, the 1997 men’s NCAA Region VIII Championships, the 1999 women’s NCAA First/Second Rounds, the 2000 men’s and women’s NCAA First/Second Rounds, the 2002 men’s NCAA First/Second Rounds, the 2005 men’s NCAA First/Second Rounds, the 2006 men’s and women’s NCAA First/Second Rounds and the 2008 men’s NCAA First/Second Rounds. In addition to resurfaced courts and improved lighting, the refurbished complex includes seating for nearly 2,000 people. The beautifully landscaped facility offers many excellent vantage points for fans, and a large patio overlooks Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool and has a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. During the summer of 1998, the 800seat Harilela International Grandstand was added to the facility. The Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center is enhanced by a large lounge that includes food service facilities. The building also houses team meeting and locker room facilities plus office space for the men’s and women’s tennis coaching staffs. The Pepperdine men’s tennis program has been victorious in nearly 90 percent of its home matches since the facility was built (450-56, .889), including a 58-match win streak that began in 2004 and finally ended in 2008. 2009-10 PEPPERDINE MEN’S TENNIS • 3

COACH BIOGRAPHIES
ADAM STEINBERG HEAD COACH EIGHTH SEASON Upon his hiring prior to the 2002-03 season, Pepperdine men’s tennis head coach Adam Steinberg told Pepperdine Director of Athletics Dr. John Watson that he could turn the men’s tennis team into national champions. In just four seasons, Steinberg stayed true to his word. Now in his eighth year as head coach at Pepperdine in 2009-10, Steinberg has established himself as part of an elite group of coaches. His 2006 Waves won the national championship and in seven years he has an overall record of 159-50 (.761) along with seven West Coast Conference championships and seven NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2006, he was named the National Coach of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, and he is a four-time WCC Coach of the Year. During the 2007 season, his fifth, he moved into second place among Pepperdine’s men’s tennis coaches in career victories. He trails only Allen Fox’s 367 wins, which came over the course of 17 seasons. Each of his last five teams has finished in top 20 in the ITA national rankings, and all seven of his squads have ended up in the top 30. His players at Pepperdine have been named All-Americans 12 times and have been All-WCC first team selections 19 times in singles and 11 times in doubles. A Pepperdine student-athlete has been named WCC Player of the Year in each of his seven seasons. In 17 years as a head coach, which includes previous stops at St. John’s and Alabama, his overall record is 289-129 (.691). Steinberg’s first two Pepperdine teams reached the NCAA Tournament’s second round. He also produced two All-Americans in Diego Acuna and Calle Hansen in 2003, while in 2004, Pedro Rico earned the honors in singles as a sophomore. In 2005, Steinberg led the Waves to the quarterfinals in College Station, Texas, and ended the season with a #8 final ranking. Rico and Scott Doerner earned their first All-America honors in doubles after ending the season ranked #2. The 2006 championship began with the freshmen he brought in for the 2002-03 season. Steinberg developed those young players and recruited more talent to the squad over time, and the result was the program’s first NCAA title. After earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament with its 16th consecutive West Coast Conference title, Pepperdine began its magnificent tournament run. The

Waves picked up wins over Montana State and TCU in the first two rounds of action in Malibu, then traveled north to Stanford to continue their title hopes. Steinberg guided his team to wins over Florida in the Sweet 16 and defending national champion UCLA in the Elite Eight. The Waves then avenged their only two losses during the regular season in the final two matches of the tournament. Pepperdine beat Texas in the semifinals after losing to the Longhorns in April. In the championship match, Andre Begemann’s win at the fourth singles position clinched the Waves’ 4-2 upset victory over previously undefeated Georgia. The Bulldogs had beaten the Waves 4-0 on Feb. 20 at the National Indoor Championships. With a record of 36-2, it marked an NCAA record for most wins in a season by a championship team. Steinberg’s #1 doubles team, Doerner and Begemann, were runner-up in the NCAA Doubles Championships and were named All-Americans. Doerner also earned All-America honors in singles after finishing the year ranked at #14. Doerner, Rico, Ivor Lovrak and Kevin Borzenski ended their collegiate tennis careers as national champions with the Waves. Lovrak, a transfer in 2005, went an incredible 24-1 playing at the #3 singles position his senior year and was named the Most Outstanding Performer of the NCAA Tournament. Because of Pepperdine’s success, Steinberg was named the ITA National Coach of the Year after earning the ITA West Region Coach of the Year just weeks earlier. Steinberg also was named the WCC Coach of the Year for the second straight season. The 2007 squad went 23-8 overall and Steinberg directed the squad to a second-round finish in the NCAA Tournament. The 2008 Waves had another strong year, going 20-7 overall, winning the school’s 18th consecutive WCC title, reaching the NCAA’s Round of 16 and finishing with a #12 national ranking. Begemann and Bassam Beidas were named All-Americans after reaching the semifinals and the quarterfinals of the NCAA singles tournament, respectively. Steinberg earned WCC co-Coach of the Year honors. Steinberg was again WCC Coach of the Year in 2009 as the Waves went 20-10 and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a #18 final ranking. Omar Altmann was an All-American in singles after making it to the NCAA Round of 16, and he and Beidas won the award in doubles after reaching the NCAA quarterfinals. Steinberg came to Pepperdine from Alabama, where he was the head coach from 1998-2002 and posted a record of 69-57 (.548). Steinberg took the Crimson Tide to their first-ever NCAA appearance in his first season. The 1999 squad advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and he guided Francisco Rodriguez to All-American status and a #5 national ranking, the school’s highest-ranked player ever. In his final season, 2002, Alabama posted a 15-8 record and tied for second place in the SEC West Division. The Tide notched wins over #8 Kentucky and #12 Auburn before earning a #18 ranking in the year’s final national poll. Looking to further his coaching career, Steinberg was at Northwestern for two seasons as an assistant coach under Paul Torricelli. NICK CARLESS ASSISTANT COACH THIRD SEASON Nick Carless begins his fourth season at Pepperdine in 2009-10, and his third as a full-time assistant coach. He was a volunteer assistant coach for the Pepperdine men’s tennis team that won the NCAA championship in 2006, and then returned to Malibu in September 2007. In those three seasons, the Waves have a record of 76-19 (.800). As the volunteer assistant, Carless helped develop three All-Americans on the 2006 team (Andre Begemann, Scott Doerner and Pedro Rico). Begemann and Doerner reached the NCAA doubles final and ended the season ranked #2 in the nation. In between stints at Pepperdine, Carless spent one year at Northwestern, where he was an assistant coach for the 2006-07 season. He helped guide the Wildcats to a 1615 record and a #60 final ITA ranking. After returning to Malibu in a full-time position, he then helped the 2008 team reach the Round of 16 and a #12 national ranking at the end of the season. Begemann, who earned All-American honors again, made the semifinals of the NCAA singles tournament and finished his career ranked #5 in the country. Bassam Beidas reached the NCAA quarterfinals and finished the year ranked #22. The 2009 squad made it to the NCAA second round and was ranked #18 in the country. Omar Altmann was an All-American in singles and teamed up with Beidas to win the award in doubles. Carless has a long association with the area, having worked at the Malibu Summer Tennis Camp for many years. He also previously served as an assistant tennis professional at the Visalia (Calif.) Racquet Club from 2003-06 and was the director of the junior tennis program there. He played three seasons of collegiate tennis at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and went on to graduate from Fresno State with a degree in kinesiology/exercise physiology in 2005. While at Cal Poly, he was selected to the All-Big West second team as a freshman and sophomore. Carless is a native of Visalia, Calif., and attended Golden West High School, where he earned three-time All-American honors in tennis and basketball. As a youth tennis player he was ranked in the top five in Northern California in each age division and was as high as #40 in the country.

2006 NCAA CHAMPIONS The Pepperdine men’s tennis program reached the pinnacle of its sport in 2006, as the Waves captured the national championship at Stanford’s Taube Tennis Center. Early in the tournament, the Waves swept aside Montana State (first round), TCU (second round), Florida (Sweet 16) and UCLA (quarterfinals). The Waves had lost their only two matches of the regular season to Texas and Georgia. In the semifinals, the Waves beat the Longhorns, 4-1, and in the championship, Pepperdine upset the topranked and previously unbeaten Bulldogs, 4-2. Head coach Adam Steinberg’s squad led the Waves to an incredible 36-2 season, which marks the most wins ever accumulated by a national championship team. Pedro Rico, Ivor Lovrak, Andre Begemann and Omar Altmann were named to the All-Tournament Team in singles, while all three of Pepperdine’s doubles teams earned the honor. Lovrak was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Performer.

TENNIS HISTORY
HISTORY Pepperdine’s distinguished tennis history began in the 1940s, and the Waves found early success in 1952 when the program won the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Championships. After the program was elevated to NCAA Division I in 1966, Pepperdine’s national prominence began. Under the tutelage of Allen Fox, the Waves became a household name in collegiate tennis in the 1980s. In 1982, Fox led Pepperdine to its first NCAA championship match. Four years later, Fox again led Pepperdine to the title match. The Waves have made 34 appearances at the NCAA Championships since 1974, and have a current streak of 12 seasons (20 seasons including regionals, which were held in the 1990s). Also impressive is Pepperdine’s success in the West Coast Conference. Since 1958 the Waves have won 40 league titles, including 19 in a row. Pepperdine reached the pinnacle in 2006, as Adam Steinberg led the Waves to its first-ever national championship in men’s tennis. Over the years, the school has produced many remarkably talented players who have moved on to professional careers as players and coaches. Brad Gilbert and Glenn Michibata are two of the most well-known players who came about in the 1980s. A 1982 All-American, Gilbert won 20 major tournaments as a professional and was ranked as high as No. 4 in the world in 1990. He won a silver medal at the 1988 Olympics in singles play. As a coach, Gilbert is known as one of the best, guiding both Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick to Grand Slam titles. A three-time All-American, Michibata spent 10 years playing as a professional and climbed as high as No. 48 in 1986. He is currently in his 10th year as Princeton’s head men’s tennis coach. Robbie Weiss, Pepperdine’s lone NCAA singles champion in 1988, turned pro and was a top 100 player. Kelly Jones was part of both of Pepperdine’s NCAA doubles titles, and as a professional, Jones achieved the No. 1 ranking with Rick Leach in 1992 and was a finalist in three Grand Slam doubles events, including Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Australian Open. More recently, four-time All-American Simon Aspelin of Sweden (1994-97) has won 10 career titles in doubles, including the 2007 U.S. Open. He captured a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics. In addition to Gilbert and Aspelin, other Pepperdine tennis Olympians include Carlos DiLaura (Peru/1984), Martin Laurendeau (Canada/1988), Kelly Jones (USA/1984), Glenn Michibata (Canada/1988), Augustine Moreno (Mexico/1988) and Andrew Sznajder (Canada/1992).

TENNIS HISTORY
NCAA TOURNAMENT RESULTS Dating back to 1974, Pepperdine has appeared in the NCAA Championships on 34 occasions, with a national championship in 2006, runner-up finishes in 1982 and 1986, a third-place standing in 1984 and fourth-place finishes in 1980 and 1983. Since the tournament went to a dual-match format, Pepperdine has posted a record 50-32 (.610) in 31 events. The Waves had three top 15 finishes from 1974-76 under the old format, where teams earned points based on individual wins. In 1977, the format was changed with the nation’s top 16 teams playing a single-elimination NCAA Champions tournament to determine the NCAA champion. From 1994 to 1998, Pepperdine competed in Region VIII, with the winner of each regional advancing to the NCAA Championships. In 1999, the NCAA Tournament moved to a 64-team Team (1) format that requires teams to win six matches for the team title. 2006..........................head coach Adam Steinberg Since the 64-team format began, Pepperdine has been in the event every year and played host for the first two rounds in 2000, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2008. Singles (1) The 2006 NCAA title marked the University’s ninth overall title and the team’s 36 victories are the most ever 1988 ................................................Robbie Weiss for an NCAA champion since the team championship format was established in 1977. The Waves have also had considerable success in the individual tournaments. In 1984, Pepperdine’s No. 1 seeded team of Kelly Jones and Jerome Jones (no relation) won the the NCAA doubles title. The following year, Kelly Doubles (2) 1984 .....................Kelly Jones and Jerome Jones Jones teamed up with Carlos DiLaura to win the 1985 doubles crown. In singles, Robbie Weiss’ memorable year 1985 ................... Kelly Jones and Carlos DiLaura came to a climax by winning the NCAA singles championship. He remains the only Wave that has won the singles title. In 2006, Scott Doerner and Andre Begemann continued Pepperdine’s success in doubles as the duo advanced to the championship match, but fell to Illinois’ doubles team of Kevin Anderson and Ryan Rowe. 1978

THIS IS
“What we hope to build is much more than a beautiful campus. It will, as you can sense, be that. But if that is all we shall have accomplished, we shall have failed. What we hope to create here, in these hills, is a spirit of place. A place where minds will be opened, where lives will be changed, where lasting relationships will be formed.” — Seaver College Dedication, May 23, 1970
PEPPERDINE
• Malibu is located right alongside the Pacific Ocean, just about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Pepperdine’s picturesque campus is just a few hundred yards up the hill from Malibu Beach. The Malibu area, as well as all of Southern California, offers tremendous recreation, sporting and entertainment opportunities.
• Pepperdine’s motto is “Freely ye received, freely give” (Matt. 10:8).
• Pepperdine is an independent, medium-sized Christian institution committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values. • Approximately 8,000 students are enrolled in five colleges and schools, including Seaver College, the flagship undergraduate school of liberal arts and sciences. A bachelor’s degree is available in nearly 40 areas of study. • Pepperdine was ranked number 56 by the U.S. News and World Report’s list of America’s best colleges in 2009 (and is the only West Coast Conference school in the top 100). • Pepperdine was awarded the title of “Most Beautiful Campus” by the Princeton Review in 2005. • The student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1.
UNIVERSITY • Students and alumni consistently cite the quality, accessibility and caring nature of the faculty and staff as among Pepperdine’s major strengths. • There are 395 full-time teaching faculty, and 98% of full-time faculty have earned doctoral degrees. Students are provided with experiential opportunities, including research projects and internships so that their knowledge can be put to practice. • 75% of Pepperdine undergraduates receive some form of financial assistance. • Pepperdine University is respected both nationally and internationally. Students come to Pepperdine from all 50 states and more than 70 countries worldwide. Additionally, nearly 60% of Pepperdine’s undergraduate students study abroad at one point within one more than 20 international programs. • Pepperdine was recently voted as having the seventhbest study-abroad program in the nation by the Institute of International Education. Study-abroad programs include Heidelberg, Germany; London, England; Florence, Italy; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Lausanne, Switzerland; and Shanghai, China. • Among the 38 different majors offered, the top five at Seaver College are business administration, advertising, international studies, international business, psychology and political science. • The University was founded in 1937 by George Pepperdine, a Christian businessman who established the Western Auto Supply Company.
ATHLETIC
Pepperdine is classified as an NCAA Division I-AAA school (Division I schools that do not sponsor football), and the Waves are one of the very best of their kind. Since the I-AAA Athletic Director’s Association All-Sports Trophy was established, ranking the various schools on their postseason success, Pepperdine has finished in the top six every single time, including in first place twice (2004-05 and 2005-06). In the annual NACDA Director’s Cup standings, which measures overall postseason success, Pepperdine has finished first among all of its West Coast Conference rivals for 13 straight years.
Men’s Basketball
Jennifer Lacy
Over the years, the Pepperdine men’s basketball program has made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, captured at least a share of 16 conference titles, won three West Coast Conference Tournament titles and sent dozens of players into professional basketball. Head coach Tom Asbury was one of the top coaches in the WCC’s history from 1989-94 and he has returned to Malibu to help the program thrive once again.
Baseball
The 1992 College World Series champions, Pepperdine baseball has recorded a remarkable 32 straight 30-win seasons. The Waves have advanced to the NCAA Championships 25 times, including five times under head coach Steve Rodriguez. Pepperdine has captured 17 regularseason WCC crowns and four WCC Championship Series titles. Twenty-nine alums have gone on to success in Major League Baseball. Dan Haren
Yakhouba Diawara
Women’s Basketball
With seven postseason appearances in the last 11 seasons, the Pepperdine women’s basketball team has developed into a consistent winner and a contender in the West Coast Conference. The Waves made their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2000 with an at-large bid, then captured the WCC Tournament title and subsequent NCAA appearances in 2002, 2003 and 2006, the most recent coming under head coach Julie Rousseau.
Cross Country / Track
Head coach Robert Radnoti has the goal of national prominence for his cross country and track programs. The Waves were extremely strong in these sports at their SouthCentral campus from the 1930s to the 1960s, with All-Americans and Olympians to their credit. However, the programs were dropped briefly when the university moved its campus to Malibu. The Waves have made great strides in cross country over the years and track was added again in the past few years.
Women’s Soccer
One of the youngest programs on Pepperdine’s campus, the women’s soccer team has quickly developed into among the strongest in recent years. Since its inaugural season in 1993, the Waves have posted 10-win seasons 10 times and made the NCAA Tournament five straight years from 2001-05. Head coach Tim Ward has helped his Waves reach the NCAA’s Sweet 16 on two occasions.
Anna Picarelli
SUCCESS Men’s Volleyball
Pepperdine’s most successful program has won five NCAA men’s volleyball championships, second-most of any school, with the last title coming in 2005. The program is synonymous with head coach Marv Dunphy, who was responsible for four of the titles and has also had a long association with USA Volleyball. Pepperdine has made the NCAA Championships event on 15 occasions, including six times in the past decade.
Jonathan Winder
Men’s Golf
The 1997 NCAA men’s golf champions and a regular at the top of the West Coast Conference’s leaderboard, Pepperdine competes with the nation’s best. The Waves have won 16 WCC titles since 1987 and have 11 straight NCAA regional appearances. Pepperdine won the NCAA title in John Geiberger’s first season and have posted two other top 10 national finishes.
Michael Putnam
Women’s Volleyball
Andre Begemann
For most of its history, the Pepperdine women’s volleyball program has boasted one of the nation’s top coaches in Nina Matthies, who took over in 1983. Since the West Coast Conference added women’s volleyball, the Waves have been the league’s dominant program with 10 titles. Since 1981, the Waves have made 20 trips to the NCAA Championships, including 11 in the last 12 years.
Men’s Tennis
No team has been more consistent then Pepperdine’s men’s tennis program, which wins the West Coast Conference title and makes the NCAA Tournament with amazing regularity. The Waves have won 40 WCC titles, including 19 in a row. Led by head coach Adam Steinberg, the Waves reached the pinnacle in 2006 and won the national championship.
Jesse Smith
Men’s Water Polo
Pepperdine was the host site of the 1984 Olympic water polo competition, so it should be no surprise that the Waves excel in the sport. Pepperdine has advanced to the NCAA Championships 12 times in its history and captured the national crown in 1997. Current coach Jack Kocur was a player on that title team. The Waves have won at least a share of conference titles nine times and have finished in the top 10 in the national rankings every year since 1976.
Katie Wilkins
Women’s Golf
In the last 16 seasons since Laurie Gibbs became head coach, the Pepperdine women’s golf program has developed into a national championship contender. The Waves have won 11 WCC titles, been to 11 straight NCAA Regional tournaments and have made nine NCAA Championships appearances. The Waves finished second in the nation in 2003 and boast four top-five finishes.
Katherine Hull
Sylvia Kosakowski
Women’s Tennis
No coach has been on staff at Pepperdine for more consecutive years than Gualberto Escudero, who took over as women’s tennis head coach in 1977-78. His tenure has featured WCC titles (21, including seven in a row), NCAA Tournament appearances (26, with 12 in a row) and top 25 finishes (including eight times in the nation’s top 10). Lindsay Adarme
Women’s Swimming & Diving
For more than 20 years, Pepperdine has thrived in the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference. The Waves have had nine consecutive topfive finishes under head coach Nick Rodionoff, including a program-best-tying secondplace finish in 2008. Ten of Pepperdine’s 20 record times have come under Rodionoff’s watch.

The fact that Pepperdine has won NCAA championships in five different men’s sports is a rare feat, as the Waves are one of only 14 schools to accomplish this. Making it even more noteworthy is that Pepperdine is the only non-BCS school and is by far the smallest. Following are the 14 schools with their enrollment figures. Arizona State (63,278) California (33,000) Indiana (38,247) Michigan (38,006) Michigan State (45,520) Minnesota (50,042) Ohio State (50,504) Oklahoma State (32,721) Penn State (42,294) Pepperdine (8,000) Stanford (14,890) UCLA (36,890) USC (33,000) Wisconsin (41,466) Additional national championships have been won by the now-defunct football squad (1947 small college), men’s tennis (1952 NAIA), Jerome Jones and Kelly Jones (1984 NCAA Tennis Doubles Tournament), Carlos DiLaura and Kelly Jones (1985 NCAA Tennis Doubles Tournament) and Robbie Weiss (1988 NCAA Tennis Singles Tournament).

COMMUNITY
Pepperdine University’s goal is to “strengthen lives for purpose, service and leadership” and the Pepperdine Athletics Department is a strong believer in helping its student-athletes to meet this goal. The school’s athletic teams embrace the concept of volunteerism and service to the community. Teams are regularly taking on projects that will better the lives of others. Step Forward is an annual day held each fall that is devoted to community service, when more than a thousand Pepperdine students, staff, faculty and alumni will disperse throughout Southern California in order to lend a hand to those in need. Pepperdine’s athletic teams have been front and center as part of this event, as well as other service opportunities year-round.
LIFE SKILLS/SAAC The Pepperdine University Athletics Department is committed to a program of life skills that provides educational experiences and services in order to develop well-balanced life styles for student-athletes; to encourage growth in decision making, planning and fulfillment of career and life goals; and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the university setting. The program is required for every incoming freshman and transfer student-athlete. Nationally recognized speakers and a life skills class are part of the program. Topics are chosen to support the following commitment purpose statements: • Commitment to Academic Excellence — To support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation. • Commitment to Athletics Excellence — To build philosophical foundations for the development of athletics programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student athlete.
• Commitment to Personal Development — To support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for studentathletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision making skills. • Commitment to Service — To engage the studentathlete in service to his/her campus and surrounding communities. • Commitment to Career Development — To encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals. The Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) is comprised of two student leaders from each athletic team at Pepperdine. National SAACs at a glance: • Generate a student-athlete voice within the NCAA structure. • Solicit student-athlete response to proposed NCAA legislation. • Recommend potential NCAA legislation. • Review, react and comment to the governance structure on legislation, activities and subjects of interest. • Actively participate in the administrative process of athletics programs and the NCAA. • Promote a positive student-athlete image.

At Pepperdine University, student-athletes will be provided with opportunities to achieve goals as stated by the University founder, Mr. George Pepperdine. His original statement of purpose is still the guiding principle of the University: “Therefore, as my contribution to the wellbeing and happiness of this generation and those that follow, I am endowing this institution to help young men and women prepare themselves for a life of usefulness in this competitive world and to help them build a foundation of Christian character and faith which will survive the storms of life.” Intercollegiate student-athletes representing Pepperdine University will be bonafide students pursuing degree programs of their choice who enjoy the opportunity to develop their athletics abilities consistent with the high standards of academic scholarship, sportsmanship, leadership and institutional tradition.

WCC
When the West Coast Conference first got its start back in 1952, the founders really had only one goal in mind — to create a convenient way for five Bay Area schools to play basketball. What has grown from that original vision some 57 years ago is a marvelously cohesive athletics league that is competitive at a national level in 13 sports. The eight current members of the WCC span the western coast of the United States from Canada to Mexico. Though the institutions range from the pine forests of Eastern Washington to the sun-drenched beaches of Southern California, the combined excellence in academics and athletics sets the conference apart on the national scene and draws the individual institutions together in a common mission. The WCC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball. Originally chartered as the California Basketball Association, the five-team league included Pacific, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, San Jose State and Santa Clara, and the firstever men’s basketball game was played January 2, 1953. After three seasons of play under that name, the conference expanded to include Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in 1955, and became known as the West Coast Athletic Conference in 1956. The name was shortened in 1989. The current alignment of Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, University of Portland, Saint Mary’s College, University of San Diego, University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University has remained unchanged since 1979, making the WCC the third-most stable athletic conference in the nation. Only the Ivy League and the Pacific-10 Conference have been together longer. Women’s sports were incorporated into the WCC prior to the 1985-86 season, and the league has made steady improvements in several sports, particularly basketball, soccer and volleyball. Since joining the WCC prior to the 1955-56 season, Pepperdine has claimed 129 WCC regular-season team championships in the following sports: baseball (17), men’s basketball (12), women’s basketball (4), men’s golf (16), women’s golf (11), women’s soccer (1), men’s tennis (40), women’s tennis (21) and women’s volleyball (10). Additionally, the men’s and women’s basketball team have each won the league’s postseason tournament three times. The baseball team has won the WCC Championship Series four times. The league relocated its headquarters in the summer of 1998 to San Bruno near the San Francisco International Airport. The WCC hired Jamie Zaninovich as its commissioner in March 2008.
MPSF
The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation was established during the 1992-93 academic year to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. The Federation has served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. In men’s volleyball, the Waves have won five regular season and four tournament titles. Pepperdine competes against BYU, Cal State Northridge, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Pacific, Stanford, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and USC. MPSF schools have won 14 of the 17 NCAA men’s volleyball championships since the conference was created (including one by Pepperdine). In men’s water polo, the Waves have won two regular-season crowns. Pepperdine competes against California, Long Beach State, Pacific, Stanford, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and USC. MPSF schools have won all 17 NCAA men’s water polo championships since the conference was created (including one by Pepperdine).
PCSC
Pepperdine has been a member of the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference for more than 20 years. The PCSC has allowed a number of swimming programs of all shape and size — NCAA Division I, II and III and the NAIA — who are not affiliated with a major conference to come together and participate at a championship meet. The Waves swim against AlaskaFairbanks, Biola, California Baptist, Cal State East Bay, Chapman, Concordia, Fresno Pacific, Loyola Marymount, Northern Colorado, Seattle, Soka, UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz. Pepperdine has always been among the top programs in the PCSC and tied its best-ever finish with a second-place showing in 2008.
