SEASON INFORMATION
SEASON OUTLOOK
Another season, another National Player of the Year that the Pepperdine men’s volleyball program must replace, which makes the 2010 campaign a difficult one to predict for the Waves. The Waves have most of their starters back from last year, when they went 22-5, made the final of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament and ended up ranked #3 by the AVCA. As has been the case throughout Marv Dunphy’s coaching career, player development has kept the Waves among the nation’s best teams. After 2007 Player of the Year Jonathan Winder graduated in 2008, Kasey Crider stepped into the setting role and was named an All-American second teamer in 2009. Now, Pepperdine will have to replace 2009 Player of the Year Paul Carroll. (Pepperdine has had seven National Players of the Year in the last 12 seasons.) “Every team needs to form its own identity,” said Dunphy, who has won four NCAA titles in his 26 previous seasons and enters the 2010 season with 491 career wins. “We’re certainly going to miss a lot of good volleyball from the likes of Matt McKee and Paul Carroll, and the numbers they put up will have to be replaced. We haven’t done that yet. The standards that we’re familiar with, we didn’t meet them in the fall. But we work on them every day.” He has a veteran squad back that understands Pepperdine’s expectations of success, which includes 13 consecutive years with a top-six ranking at season’s end. Of the 11 returning letterwinners, Pepperdine brings back the starting setter
KASEY CRIDER
SEAN GRUBBS and libero, both middle blockers and one of the outside hitters. Plus, senior outside hitter J.D. Schleppenbach, one of the postseason standouts of the run to the 2008 national championship match, should make his return to the court after redshirting last season and rehabbing from a couple of injuries. “Everyone on the team is going to have to carry a bigger load than they did before,” said Dunphy, who is assisted by J.J. Riley and David Hunt. “They’re working hard and trying to do that. Time will tell.” Schleppenbach (Ventura, Calif./ Ventura HS) is a three-year starter, but he missed the 2009 season after having shoulder surgery. He’s also coming back from a knee injury. The last time he was active, he made the all-tournament teams at both the MPSF and NCAA Championships in 2008, including an average of 4.14 kills in the two NCAA Tournament matches. “J.D. isn’t quite the same player yet from when we last saw him out there, which was at a pretty high level more than a year ago,” Dunphy said. “If we can get him back fully healthy, he’ll make a big difference.” Crider (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS), a junior setter, moved into the starting position last year and earned his All-American award from Volleyball
Magazine after averaging 13.90 assists, second-best in the nation. He also averaged 2.12 digs and 0.67 blocks and helped Pepperdine to a team hitting percentage of .343. “Kasey played a lot of last year not as strong as he wanted to be,” Dunphy said. “He had some injuries and he had to manage those, but he’s now stronger physically. I would look for him to play well and take on a little more of a leadership role.” Other setters on the roster are senior Kyle Luongo (Palmdale, Calif./ Highland HS/Pierce CC) and junior Doug Astor (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill HS/ Orange Coast CC). The Waves bring back one of the nation’s top liberos in senior Sean Grubbs (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS/Irvine Valley CC). He averaged 2.04 digs per game over his first two seasons, which ranks third all-time at Pepperdine, and is known for his outstanding passing abilities. He made the All-MPSF honorable mention squad last season. “He’s good,” Dunphy said. “All good teams have one thing or a couple of things they’re good at, and hopefully we’ll be a good passing team. A big part of that is Sean’s ability to pass. He has very good volleyball instincts.” Additional liberos that are new to the team are junior Brandt Ng (Orinda,

RODNEI SANTOS Calif./Bentley HS/Saint Mary’s) and sophomore Michael Kahl (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach HS). Junior Cory Riecks (Auburn, Calif./Placer HS) joins Schleppenbach as an outside hitter with multiple years of experience in the starting lineup. He was second on the team as a freshman with 3.22 kills and third as a sophomore with 2.56 kills. “Cory has been a little inconsistent, but he’s had some really good streaks at times,” Dunphy said. “If we get some more consistent play out of him, he’ll be fine. He’s matured as a volleyball player and I expect he’ll carry a big load this season.” One of the most improved players on Pepperdine’s team is senior outside hitter Brent Schirripa (Los Angeles, Calif./ Crespi Carmelite HS). He averaged 0.87 kills and 1.09 digs and appeared in all 27 matches last year. “Brent really played well in several significant matches last year,” Dunphy said. “He’s in the mix for a starting position. I’m proud of what he’s done to make himself into a good volleyball player. He’s as close to reaching his potential as any guy in the program.” Sophomore outside hitter Chase Ross (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) is another player that might be ready to take a step forward. He competed at the 2009 FIVB Junior World Beach Championships in England last summer. Redshirt freshman Beau Vandeweghe (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS), sophomore Trevor Van Uden (Thousand Oaks, Calif./ Thousand Oaks HS) and freshman Joel Lopata (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield HS) are
also competing at outside hitter. Pepperdine’s returning starters at middle blocker are senior Rodnei Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Campos Salles/ BYU) and junior Tyler Jaynes (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS). Santos sat out his first season at Pepperdine after transferring from BYU, but immediately became a force during the 2009 season. He averaged 2.18 kills while hitting .437, and ranked second in the MPSF and fourth nationally in blocks (1.45). Different circumstances could also see Santos play some at opposite this season. “Rodnei has done a very good job as a hitter,” Dunphy said. “We need to pass the ball well enough to get him the ball. He’s probably a better volleyball player than he was a year ago, and that’s good.” Jaynes is a two-year starter who ranked fourth in the MPSF and sixth nationally in blocks (1.42) in 2009, and also averaged 1.60 kills while hitting .410. “Tyler had a good summer, but unfortunately had an injury that kept him out of the fall,” Dunphy said. “He’s a little older, a little wiser, and I expect he’ll play a bigger role as a hitter for us.” Making a push to break into the starting lineup at middle blocker is sophomore Matt Pollock (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg HS). He appeared in three games and three matches last season and has improved greatly heading into his second year. “Matt is working hard,” Dunphy said. “He’s worked hard in the weight room. If he could win one of the middle spots, that
BRENT SCHIRRIPA
J.D. SCHLEPPENBACH would help our depth and give us some options or different lineups we could use.” Senior Patrick Powers (Fort Worth, Texas/Country Day HS) is in his fifth season with the program and also competes among the middle blockers. Replacing a three-time All-American like Carroll and his national-leading 6.36 kills per game won’t be possible with just one person. But, the Waves do have one of the nation’s top recruits lined up to possibly start at opposite this year. Freshman Maurice Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) was a Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 selection and has played in the USA youth national team system the past three years. “Maurice is expected to do a lot from the start,” Dunphy said. “It would be great if he serves a ton, hits a ton and blocks a ton. The best parts of his game are serving and hitting.” Senior outside hitter Sean Pedersen (Evergreen Park, Ill./Mount Carmel HS/Cal State Northridge) is expected to redshirt this season. He appeared in all 27 matches and 80 games, primarily as a serving specialist, last season (his first at Pepperdine after transferring from CSUN). Pepperdine’s 25-match regularseason schedule includes 11 home-andhome series with MPSF opponents. The conference is expected to be extremely competitive this season (the Waves were picked fifth in the preseason coaches poll). For non-conference matches, Pepperdine opens the season at California Baptist and will host Ball State and Grand Canyon later in the year.

MARV DUNPHY HEAD COACH • 27TH SEASON PEPPERDINE ‘74 Widely recognized as one of the game’s premier coaches, Dr. Marv Dunphy has directed Pepperdine to four NCAA men’s volleyball titles and is heading into his 27th season as the Waves’ head coach in 2010. Dunphy, who holds a career record of 491-189 (.722), is noted for his highly technical approach to the game and diligent training methods. He was the 2005 National Coach of the Year and is a three-time MPSF Coach of the Year. As a result of his training, 18 different Waves have earned 33 All-American first team accolades. Pepperdine players have been named All-Americans 49 times under Dunphy’s direction. Six different athletes have gone on to earn National Player of the Year honors in Bob Ctvrtlik (1985), George Roumain (1998, 1999), Brad Keenan (2002, 2003), Sean Rooney (2005), Jonathan Winder (2007) and Paul Carroll (2009). Under Dunphy’s watchful eye, the American squad gained international attention, and the 12-man roster (which included former Pepperdine standouts Craig Buck, Bob Ctvrtlik, Jeff Stork and Troy Tanner, three of whom were starters) won the gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. Pepperdine captured its third NCAA championship in 1986 without him, but Dunphy returned to the head coaching position in November 1988. Upon returning to Malibu, he hit the recruiting trail and once again rebuilt the program. The Waves reached the pinnacle in 1992, as the team upset Long Beach State to win the MPSF Tournament and then captured its fourth NCAA crown with an impressive three-game sweep of top-ranked Stanford in Muncie, Ind. In 1998, Pepperdine compiled an impressive 23-5 mark and won the MPSF 2010 PEPPERDINE MEN’S VOLLEYBALL • 4

Tournament with a four-game victory over UCLA at Pauley Pavilion. Unfortunately, UCLA gained its revenge in the NCAA title match, defeating Pepperdine in three games. During the 1999 campaign the Waves notched a solid 20-5 mark and senior outside hitter George Roumain was tabbed the AVCA National Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Roumain was a member of the 2000 Olympic Team along with former Pepperdine players Kevin Barnett and Chip McCaw. Dunphy took another 17-month sabbatical in order to serve as an assistant coach with the U.S. National Team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. He returned to Pepperdine in October 2000. Pepperdine won the 2002 MPSF regular-season title with a 20-2 mark and then proceeded to win the league’s postseason tournament for the second time in three years. In 2003, Pepperdine went 24-6 overall, including 19-3 in the MPSF, advanced to the title game of the MPSF Tournament and reached the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. There, the Waves suffered a hard-fought, five-game setback to eventual national champion Lewis, which later vacated the title. In May of 2003, Dunphy was honored as one of four coaches named to the U.S. Volleyball Association’s Men’s 1978-2002 All-Era Team. Dunphy served the U.S. National Team in a scouting and advisory role during the 2003 World Cup in Japan. Pepperdine earned its fifth NCAA title in the program’s history in 2005. Pepperdine swept Ohio State in the national semifinals before rallying back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat UCLA, 3-2, in the championship match at Pauley Pavilion, capping off its 25-2 season. That year Dunphy was selected as National Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. He also earned MPSF Coach of the Year honors for the second time after previously picking up the honor in 2002. In 2006, Volleyball Magazine selected Dunphy as one of the “30 Most Recognizable Names in Volleyball.” Dunphy earned MPSF Coach of the Year honors again in 2007 as the Waves went 26-3 overall, won both the MPSF regular-season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 14th time in school history. During fall 2007, Dunphy rejoined the U.S. National Team for the World Cup in Japan, where he served as team leader. The 2008 Waves made one of their most unexpected runs to the national championship match, as they began the postseason as the #5 seed in the MPSF Tournament, but won the event with three straight wins away from home. Pepperdine knocked off Long Beach State in the NCAA semifinals before falling to Penn State in the championship. The Waves finished with a record of 18-11 and a #2 national ranking. Dunphy was a member of the coaching staff for the 2008 U.S. Olympic squad, which made a remarkable run to the gold medal. One of his former All-Americans, Sean Rooney, was a player on the team. The 2009 squad was one point away from making another NCAA Championships appearance before falling in the MPSF Tournament final to USC in five games. The Waves ended the season with a 22-5 record and a #3 national ranking. A popular instructor for Pepperdine University’s sports medicine department, Dunphy resides in the Decker Canyon area of Malibu with his wife Su. The couple has two daughters, Karen and Alexandra, and one son, Dijon. Alexandra is currently serving as the Pepperdine director of men’s volleyball operations. Marv and Su also have three grandchildren, Hunter, Shay and Trent.
THE WORD ON MARV DUNPHY... “Not only is Marv Dunphy one of the finest coaches of the sport of volleyball, but he is the kind of person any parent would love to have their youngster in his program. He is more interested in his player’s life after volleyball than he is in their success in the sport itself.” — John Wooden, Hall of Fame Basketball Coach “Marv is a first-class guy. He always has good input; he is very reliable and very dignified and knowledgeable. He really is an all-around good guy.” — Al Monaco, President USA Volleyball “Marv is one of the most respected coaches in the country. He has a unique passion for teaching and boundless energy. He enjoys working one-on-one with players to develop their skills and never stops teaching.” — Dr. Doug Beal, CEO USA Volleyball “Marv is a wonderful friend and when he is your friend, he is a friend for life. He honestly cares about you and your well-being. There is a wonderful presence about him and his presence is very commanding. Marv comes from a great volleyball background and is a marvelous volleyball coach.” — Dr. Carl McGown, Former U.S. National Coach “One of the greatest things about Marv is the way he carries himself. He is a very classy guy with integrity who is always poised. He is a great example for those going into his program. I believe Marv is the best coach in college volleyball and was why I chose to go to Pepperdine. He is a straightforward guy who is honest with his players. If you trust him and listen to what he has to say, he can take you to the top like he did with us in 1992.” — Dain Blanton, Former Player and Olympic Gold Medalist “We used to call him ‘the maker of men.’ Marv has great leadership qualities and we as players looked up to him as a mentor, not just in volleyball, but in life as well. We made a commitment to a higher standard and could look to him as an example of that standard.” — Mike Blanchard, Former Player

J.J. RILEY ASSISTANT COACH • 2ND SEASON PEPPERDINE ‘99 Former Pepperdine All-American setter J.J. Riley has returned to Malibu as an assistant coach with the men’s volleyball team in 2010. This will be his second stint with the Waves. Riley was part of Pepperdine’s team as a student-athlete for five seasons (1995-99) and was a Volleyball Magazine All-American second team selection in 1998, when Pepperdine reached the title match at the NCAA Championships. The Waves won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament title in 1998 with Riley setting. He set the Pepperdine record for career assists with 3,788 and now stands third on that list. During the sideout scoring era, he had the third and fourth-highest single-season assist totals in school history (1,634 in 1999 and 1,406 in 1998). His total of 18.78 assists per game in the 1999 season is the second-best figure in Pepperdine history. VOLLEYBALL HISTORY
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS 1978 CHAMPIONS
Front Row (L-R): Tom Beard, John Zabriskie, Rod Wilde, Peter Balding, Kilo Baird, Jay Iranon and Scott Rigg. Back Row (L-R): Assistant Coach Gary Sato, Team Trainer Keith McFarland, Mark Rigg, Scott McDonald, Brian Ehlers, Mike Blanchard, Gary Cunitz, Jay Anderson and Head Coach Marv Dunphy.
Pepperdine won its first-ever NCAA team title in 1978, as the Waves outlasted local rival UCLA by scores of 15-12, 11-15, 15-8, 5-15, 15-12 in a match played at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Directed by second-year head coach Marv Dunphy, the Waves advanced to the NCAA Championships by defeating San Diego State and Long Beach State in the Western Selection Tournament at Pauley Pavilion. Pepperdine notched a come-from-behind 9-15, 15-1, 9-15, 15-13, 15-12 victory over host Ohio State in the NCAA semifinals before defeating the Bruins in the title match. Mike Blanchard was named the event’s Most Valuable Player and was joined on the All-NCAA Championships squad by teammates Jay Anderson and Rod Wilde. Pepperdine completed the season with a 21-4 record.
1985 CHAMPIONS
Front Row (L-R): Assistant Coach Kirk Kilgour, Rob Scott, Matt Dodd, Matt Rigg, Ty Kastendiek, Doug Rigg, Team Assistant Jack Hastings and Assistant Coach Gary Stephenson. Back Row (L-R): Robert McNutt, Troy Tanner, Mike Fitzgerald, Bob Ctvrtlik, Mark Arnold, Steve Friedman, Matt Morphy, Graduate Assistant Coach Jeff Stork and Head Coach Marv Dunphy.
Fielding perhaps the best-ever team in the program’s history, Pepperdine defeated local rival USC by scores of 10-15, 15-10, 15-7, 15-13 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion to claim its second NCAA title. The Waves had advanced to the championship match in 1983 and 1984, but were beaten both times by UCLA. The championship was a perfect farewell gift for Pepperdine head coach Marv Dunphy, who took a sabbatical from the Waves to coach the U.S. National Team. Pepperdine earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships after claiming the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Association title with a perfect 18-0 mark. Bob Ctvrtlik was selected the event’s Most Valuable Player and was joined on the All-NCAA Championships squad by teammates Mike Fitzgerald, Matt Rigg and Troy Tanner. Pepperdine completed the season with a sparkling 25-2 record.
1986 CHAMPIONS In one of the most dramatic comebacks in Pepperdine volleyball history, the Waves rallied from a 14-12 deficit in the fifth and deciding game to defeat USC for the second consecutive year by scores of 7-15, 15-13, 15-11, 5-15, 16-14 at Recreation Hall in State College, Pa. Directed by former Pepperdine All-American and first-year head coach Rod Wilde, the Waves advanced to the NCAA Championships after defeating Hawaii and UCLA in the Western Selection Tournament at Loyola Marymount. Pepperdine posted a 15-11, 13-15, 15-11, 15-12 win over host Penn State in the NCAA semifinals before rallying to defeat USC. Steve Friedman was named the event’s Most Valuable Player and was joined on the AllNCAA Championships squad by teammates Matt Rigg and Rob Scott. Pepperdine completed the season with a 22-7 record. Front Row (L-R): Team Trainer David Trujillo, Mark Arnold, Doug Rigg, Ty Kastendiek, Randy Bergstedt, Rob Scott and Joey Fuschetti. Back Row (L-R): Head Coach Rod Wilde, Troy Tanner, Robert McNutt, Steve Friedman, Matt Morphy, Matt Rigg, Assistant Coach Mike Fitzgerald and Assistant Coach Jim McLaughlin.
1992 CHAMPIONS
Front Row (L-R): Strength Coach Brett Hessing, Chip McCaw, Greg Vernovage, Ian Clark, Duane Cameron, Dain Blanton and Assistant Coach Rick McLaughlin. Back Row (L-R): Assistant Coach Harlan Cohen, Assistant Coach Andy Read, Todd Beebe, Lee Legrande, Tom Sorensen, Mike Shannon, Braden Coenen, Nathan Owens, Graduate Assistant Coach Dijon Douphner and Head Coach Marv Dunphy.
Combining a consistent hitting attack, a dominating block and tenacious defense, Pepperdine swept top-ranked Stanford by scores of 15-7, 15-13, 16-14 at Ball State’s University Arena in Muncie, Ind., to claim its fourth NCAA volleyball championship. Head coach Marv Dunphy’s team secured its eighth NCAA Championships appearance after shocking Long Beach State by scores of 15-13, 15-13, 11-15, 17-16 in the title match of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at the Bren Events Center in Irvine. The Waves recorded a three-game sweep over Penn State in the semifinal round before defeating Stanford in the championship match. Alon Grinberg was named the event’s Most Valuable Player and was joined on the All-NCAA Championships squad by teammates Chip McCaw and Tom Sorensen. Pepperdine completed the season with a 24-4 record.
FIVE-TIME NCAA CHAMPIONS • 25
VOLLEYBALL HISTORY
2005 CHAMPIONS
Front Row (L-R): Corey Spencer, Steve Smith, James Ka, John Mayer, Sam Kim, Arist de Wolff, Tanner Sutherland, Tyler Haupert, Eric Liebert and Brad Carter. Back Row (L-R): Max de Wolff, Jon Grobe, John Parfitt, Sean Rooney, Andy Hein, Tom Hulse, Jonathan Winder, Alex Castillo and Brent Smith.
If the 1985 team is considered the best Pepperdine team ever, the 2005 followed the same blueprint for building a successful team. The 2005 team resembled its 20-year predecessor, ending the season with the same 25-2 overall record, posted a 15-match win streak, was known as being one of the top blocking teams in the nation and won the national title at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion. With AVCA National Player of the Year Sean Rooney picking apart opponents at will and freshman Jonathan Winder setting the team to a .358 hitting percentage, Marv Dunphy coached the Waves to the program’s fifth national title and his fourth in as many decades. In the championship match, Pepperdine rallied back from down 2-1 to force a fifth and final game. In the deciding game, the Waves jumped out to an 8-1 lead before handing the Bruins their first postseason loss at Pauley Pavilion. Rooney was tabbed the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, while John Parfitt and Tom Hulse were selected to the all-tournament team.

VOLLEYBALL HISTORY
OLYMPIANS
FUN FACTS
The Pepperdine men’s volleyball team has a proud association with the Olympics and USA Volleyball. Pepperdine has had representatives on every team since 1984, including the gold-medal winning squads of 1984, 1988 and 2008. Dain Blanton also earned success on the beach with his gold medal in 2000. Following is a list of all of the Waves that have taken part at the Olympics as a player or coach.
• The Waves have won five NCAA men’s volleyball championships, more than any other school except for UCLA. • Marv Dunphy is one of just three coaches in any sport to win an NCAA title in four different decades. • Men’s volleyball accounts for five of the nine NCAA championships that Pepperdine has won. • Pepperdine owns the best record in the MPSF since 2002 at 139-37 (.790), when the conference went to its current roundrobin format. • Pepperdine student-athletes have won a National Player of the Year award in seven of the last 12 seasons. • Pepperdine has had seven players become four-time all-conference honorees (Paul Carroll, Brad Keenan, Sean Rooney, George Roumain, Rod Wilde, Jonathan Winder and Scott Wong). • All four Rigg brothers (Doug, Mark, Matt and Scott) won a national title while playing at Pepperdine. • The 1985 Pepperdine team was the last to win a national title while running a 6-2 offense. • Two freshmen setters (Chip McCaw in 1992 and Jonathan Winder in 2005) led Pepperdine to a national title. • Five different Waves have won the NCAA Tournament MVP award. • Pepperdine has competed in the Can-Am Challenge, a fall exhibition tournament, for 15 consecutive years, and the McDonald’s International Tournament, a winter exhibition event, the past three years. • Former standout Bob Ctvrtlik is currently the Vice President of the U.S. Olympic Committee and a member of the International Olympic Committee. • Former NCAA Player of the Year Brad Keenan was the 2006 AVP Rookie of the Year and earned Most Improved honors in 2007. • Jeff Stork and Bob Ctvrtlik played in three straight Olympic Games together for the U.S. (1988, 1992 and 1996). • Former player George Thompson has had three books published. One was a bestseller titled “Millionaires in Training.” • Pepperdine was up for a couple of local awards recently. Jonathan Winder was nominated as the College Male Athlete of the Year for the 2008 Southern California Sports Awards, presented by 710 ESPN Radio, and the team’s run through the 2008 postseason won an award as one of the “Greatest Sports Moments of 2008” by the Los Angeles Sports Council. • After winning the 2005 NCAA title, Pepperdine received national recognition for presenting President George W. Bush with “Surfboard One.”

HOME COURT
FIRESTONE FIELDHOUSE YEAR-BY-YEAR AT FIRESTONE FIELDHOUSE
With the university’s move to Malibu, the Pepperdine men’s volleyball program’s permanent home opened up prior to the 1974 season with the construction of Firestone Fieldhouse. The Waves downed visiting San Diego State 15-5, 15-5, 15-8 in the team’s initial appearance at the venue. Pepperdine has established a strong homecourt edge over the course of the last 36 seasons, posting an overall record of 341-94 (.784). The Waves have posted winning home seasons in 35 of 36 campaigns and went undefeated twice, both during national championship seasons. The Waves went 10-0 in 1978 and 14-0 in 2005. Pepperdine’s most home wins came in 2002, when the Waves went 17-1. The modern, cozy facility is an excellent place to view basketball and volleyball events from both courtside bleachers and upstairs theater seats. The listed capacity is 3,104, but attendance can climb closer to 5,000 for concerts, graduation ceremonies and lectures. Named in honor of Leonard K. Firestone, the facility was officially dedicated by President Gerald R. Ford on September 20, 1975.

FIVE-TIME NCAA CHAMPIONS • 39
THIS IS
“What we hope to build is much more than a beautiful campus. It will, as you can sense, be that. But if that is all we shall have accomplished, we shall have failed. What we hope to create here, in these hills, is a spirit of place. A place where minds will be opened, where lives will be changed, where lasting relationships will be formed.” — Seaver College Dedication, May 23, 1970
PEPPERDINE
• Malibu is located right alongside the Pacific Ocean, just about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Pepperdine’s picturesque campus is just a few hundred yards up the hill from Malibu Beach. The Malibu area, as well as all of Southern California, offers tremendous recreation, sporting and entertainment opportunities.
• Pepperdine’s motto is “Freely ye received, freely give” (Matt. 10:8).
• Pepperdine is an independent, medium-sized Christian institution committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values. • Approximately 8,000 students are enrolled in five colleges and schools, including Seaver College, the flagship undergraduate school of liberal arts and sciences. A bachelor’s degree is available in nearly 40 areas of study. • Pepperdine was ranked number 56 by the U.S. News and World Report’s list of America’s best colleges in 2009 (and is the only West Coast Conference school in the top 100). • Pepperdine was awarded the title of “Most Beautiful Campus” by the Princeton Review in 2005. • The student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1.
UNIVERSITY • Students and alumni consistently cite the quality, accessibility and caring nature of the faculty and staff as among Pepperdine’s major strengths. • There are 395 full-time teaching faculty, and 98% of full-time faculty have earned doctoral degrees. Students are provided with experiential opportunities, including research projects and internships so that their knowledge can be put to practice. • 75% of Pepperdine undergraduates receive some form of financial assistance. • Pepperdine University is respected both nationally and internationally. Students come to Pepperdine from all 50 states and more than 70 countries worldwide. Additionally, nearly 60% of Pepperdine’s undergraduate students study abroad at one point within one more than 20 international programs. • Pepperdine was recently voted as having the seventhbest study-abroad program in the nation by the Institute of International Education. Study-abroad programs include Heidelberg, Germany; London, England; Florence, Italy; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Lausanne, Switzerland; and Shanghai, China. • Among the 38 different majors offered, the top five at Seaver College are business administration, advertising, international studies, international business, psychology and political science. • The University was founded in 1937 by George Pepperdine, a Christian businessman who established the Western Auto Supply Company.
ATHLETIC
Pepperdine is classified as an NCAA Division I-AAA school (Division I schools that do not sponsor football), and the Waves are one of the very best of their kind. Since the I-AAA Athletic Director’s Association All-Sports Trophy was established, ranking the various schools on their postseason success, Pepperdine has finished in the top six every single time, including in first place twice (2004-05 and 2005-06). In the annual NACDA Director’s Cup standings, which measures overall postseason success, Pepperdine has finished first among all of its West Coast Conference rivals for 13 straight years.
Men’s Basketball
Jennifer Lacy
Over the years, the Pepperdine men’s basketball program has made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, captured at least a share of 16 conference titles, won three West Coast Conference Tournament titles and sent dozens of players into professional basketball. Head coach Tom Asbury was one of the top coaches in the WCC’s history from 1989-94 and he has returned to Malibu to help the program thrive once again.
Baseball
The 1992 College World Series champions, Pepperdine baseball has recorded a remarkable 32 straight 30-win seasons. The Waves have advanced to the NCAA Championships 25 times, including five times under head coach Steve Rodriguez. Pepperdine has captured 17 regularseason WCC crowns and four WCC Championship Series titles. Twenty-nine alums have gone on to success in Major League Baseball. Dan Haren
Yakhouba Diawara
Women’s Basketball
With seven postseason appearances in the last 11 seasons, the Pepperdine women’s basketball team has developed into a consistent winner and a contender in the West Coast Conference. The Waves made their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2000 with an at-large bid, then captured the WCC Tournament title and subsequent NCAA appearances in 2002, 2003 and 2006, the most recent coming under head coach Julie Rousseau.
Cross Country / Track
Head coach Robert Radnoti has the goal of national prominence for his cross country and track programs. The Waves were extremely strong in these sports at their SouthCentral campus from the 1930s to the 1960s, with All-Americans and Olympians to their credit. However, the programs were dropped briefly when the university moved its campus to Malibu. The Waves have made great strides in cross country over the years and track was added again in the past few years.
Women’s Soccer
One of the youngest programs on Pepperdine’s campus, the women’s soccer team has quickly developed into among the strongest in recent years. Since its inaugural season in 1993, the Waves have posted 10-win seasons 10 times and made the NCAA Tournament five straight years from 2001-05. Head coach Tim Ward has helped his Waves reach the NCAA’s Sweet 16 on two occasions.
Anna Picarelli
SUCCESS Men’s Volleyball
Pepperdine’s most successful program has won five NCAA men’s volleyball championships, second-most of any school, with the last title coming in 2005. The program is synonymous with head coach Marv Dunphy, who was responsible for four of the titles and has also had a long association with USA Volleyball. Pepperdine has made the NCAA Championships event on 15 occasions, including six times in the past decade.
Jonathan Winder
Men’s Golf
The 1997 NCAA men’s golf champions and a regular at the top of the West Coast Conference’s leaderboard, Pepperdine competes with the nation’s best. The Waves have won 16 WCC titles since 1987 and have 11 straight NCAA regional appearances. Pepperdine won the NCAA title in John Geiberger’s first season and have posted two other top 10 national finishes.
Michael Putnam
Women’s Volleyball
Andre Begemann
For most of its history, the Pepperdine women’s volleyball program has boasted one of the nation’s top coaches in Nina Matthies, who took over in 1983. Since the West Coast Conference added women’s volleyball, the Waves have been the league’s dominant program with 10 titles. Since 1981, the Waves have made 20 trips to the NCAA Championships, including 11 in the last 12 years.
Men’s Tennis
No team has been more consistent then Pepperdine’s men’s tennis program, which wins the West Coast Conference title and makes the NCAA Tournament with amazing regularity. The Waves have won 40 WCC titles, including 19 in a row. Led by head coach Adam Steinberg, the Waves reached the pinnacle in 2006 and won the national championship.
Jesse Smith
Men’s Water Polo
Pepperdine was the host site of the 1984 Olympic water polo competition, so it should be no surprise that the Waves excel in the sport. Pepperdine has advanced to the NCAA Championships 12 times in its history and captured the national crown in 1997. Current coach Jack Kocur was a player on that title team. The Waves have won at least a share of conference titles nine times and have finished in the top 10 in the national rankings every year since 1976.
Katie Wilkins
Women’s Golf
In the last 16 seasons since Laurie Gibbs became head coach, the Pepperdine women’s golf program has developed into a national championship contender. The Waves have won 11 WCC titles, been to 11 straight NCAA Regional tournaments and have made nine NCAA Championships appearances. The Waves finished second in the nation in 2003 and boast four top-five finishes.
Katherine Hull
Sylvia Kosakowski
Women’s Tennis
No coach has been on staff at Pepperdine for more consecutive years than Gualberto Escudero, who took over as women’s tennis head coach in 1977-78. His tenure has featured WCC titles (21, including seven in a row), NCAA Tournament appearances (26, with 12 in a row) and top 25 finishes (including eight times in the nation’s top 10). Lindsay Adarme
Women’s Swimming & Diving
For more than 20 years, Pepperdine has thrived in the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference. The Waves have had nine consecutive topfive finishes under head coach Nick Rodionoff, including a program-best-tying secondplace finish in 2008. The fact that Pepperdine has won NCAA championships in five different men’s sports is a rare feat, as the Waves are one of only 14 schools to accomplish this. Making it even more noteworthy is that Pepperdine is the only non-BCS school and is by far the smallest. Following are the 14 schools with their enrollment figures. Arizona State (63,278) California (33,000) Indiana (38,247) Michigan (38,006) Michigan State (45,520) Minnesota (50,042) Ohio State (50,504) Oklahoma State (32,721) Penn State (42,294) Pepperdine (8,000) Stanford (14,890) UCLA (36,890) USC (33,000) Wisconsin (41,466) Additional national championships have been won by the now-defunct football squad (1947 small college), men’s tennis (1952 NAIA), Jerome Jones and Kelly Jones (1984 NCAA Tennis Doubles Tournament), Carlos DiLaura and Kelly Jones (1985 NCAA Tennis Doubles Tournament) and Robbie Weiss (1988 NCAA Tennis Singles Tournament).

COMMUNITY
Pepperdine University’s goal is to “strengthen lives for purpose, service and leadership” and the Pepperdine Athletics Department is a strong believer in helping its student-athletes to meet this goal. The school’s athletic teams embrace the concept of volunteerism and service to the community. Teams are regularly taking on projects that will better the lives of others. Step Forward is an annual day held each fall that is devoted to community service, when more than a thousand Pepperdine students, staff, faculty and alumni will disperse throughout Southern California in order to lend a hand to those in need. Pepperdine’s athletic teams have been front and center as part of this event, as well as other service opportunities year-round.
LIFE SKILLS/SAAC The Pepperdine University Athletics Department is committed to a program of life skills that provides educational experiences and services in order to develop well-balanced life styles for student-athletes; to encourage growth in decision making, planning and fulfillment of career and life goals; and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the university setting. The program is required for every incoming freshman and transfer student-athlete. Nationally recognized speakers and a life skills class are part of the program. Topics are chosen to support the following commitment purpose statements: • Commitment to Academic Excellence — To support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation. • Commitment to Athletics Excellence — To build philosophical foundations for the development of athletics programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student athlete.
• Commitment to Personal Development — To support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for studentathletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision making skills. • Commitment to Service — To engage the studentathlete in service to his/her campus and surrounding communities. • Commitment to Career Development — To encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals. The Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) is comprised of two student leaders from each athletic team at Pepperdine. National SAACs at a glance: • Generate a student-athlete voice within the NCAA structure. • Solicit student-athlete response to proposed NCAA legislation. • Recommend potential NCAA legislation. • Review, react and comment to the governance structure on legislation, activities and subjects of interest. • Actively participate in the administrative process of athletics programs and the NCAA. • Promote a positive student-athlete image.

ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT PEPPERDINE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Athletics Department supports and endorses the Pepperdine University Mission Statement. At Pepperdine University, student-athletes will be provided with opportunities to achieve goals as stated by the University founder, Mr. George Pepperdine. His original statement of purpose is still the guiding principle of the University: “Therefore, as my contribution to the wellbeing and happiness of this generation and those that follow, I am endowing this institution to help young men and women prepare themselves for a life of usefulness in this competitive world and to help them build a foundation of Christian character and faith which will survive the storms of life.” Intercollegiate student-athletes representing Pepperdine University will be bonafide students pursuing degree programs of their choice who enjoy the opportunity to develop their athletics abilities consistent with the high standards of academic scholarship, sportsmanship, leadership and institutional tradition.

WCC
When the West Coast Conference first got its start back in 1952, the founders really had only one goal in mind — to create a convenient way for five Bay Area schools to play basketball. What has grown from that original vision some 57 years ago is a marvelously cohesive athletics league that is competitive at a national level in 13 sports. The eight current members of the WCC span the western coast of the United States from Canada to Mexico. Though the institutions range from the pine forests of Eastern Washington to the sun-drenched beaches of Southern California, the combined excellence in academics and athletics sets the conference apart on the national scene and draws the individual institutions together in a common mission. The WCC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball. Originally chartered as the California Basketball Association, the five-team league included Pacific, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, San Jose State and Santa Clara, and the firstever men’s basketball game was played January 2, 1953. After three seasons of play under that name, the conference expanded to include Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in 1955, and became known as the West Coast Athletic Conference in 1956. The name was shortened in 1989. The current alignment of Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, University of Portland, Saint Mary’s College, University of San Diego, University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University has remained unchanged since 1979, making the WCC the third-most stable athletic conference in the nation. Only the Ivy League and the Pacific-10 Conference have been together longer. Women’s sports were incorporated into the WCC prior to the 1985-86 season, and the league has made steady improvements in several sports, particularly basketball, soccer and volleyball. Since joining the WCC prior to the 1955-56 season, Pepperdine has claimed 129 WCC regular-season team championships in the following sports: baseball (17), men’s basketball (12), women’s basketball (4), men’s golf (16), women’s golf (11), women’s soccer (1), men’s tennis (40), women’s tennis (21) and women’s volleyball (10). Additionally, the men’s and women’s basketball team have each won the league’s postseason tournament three times. The baseball team has won the WCC Championship Series four times. The league relocated its headquarters in the summer of 1998 to San Bruno near the San Francisco International Airport. The WCC hired Jamie Zaninovich as its commissioner in March 2008.
MPSF
The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation was established during the 1992-93 academic year to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. The Federation has served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. In men’s volleyball, the Waves have won five regular season and four tournament titles. Pepperdine competes against BYU, Cal State Northridge, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Pacific, Stanford, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and USC. MPSF schools have won 14 of the 17 NCAA men’s volleyball championships since the conference was created (including one by Pepperdine). In men’s water polo, the Waves have won two regular-season crowns. Pepperdine competes against California, Long Beach State, Pacific, Stanford, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and USC. MPSF schools have won all 17 NCAA men’s water polo championships since the conference was created (including one by Pepperdine).
PCSC
Pepperdine has been a member of the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference for more than 20 years. The PCSC has allowed a number of swimming programs of all shape and size — NCAA Division I, II and III and the NAIA — who are not affiliated with a major conference to come together and participate at a championship meet. The Waves swim against AlaskaFairbanks, Biola, California Baptist, Cal State East Bay, Chapman, Concordia, Fresno Pacific, Loyola Marymount, Northern Colorado, Seattle, Soka, UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz. Pepperdine has always been among the top programs in the PCSC and tied its best-ever finish with a second-place showing in 2008.
