The rich tradition of the Pepperdine men’s volleyball program continues to this day. The proud owners of five NCAA Championships, nine regular-season conference titles and four Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament crowns, the Waves regularly demonstrate a level of success that is sustained year in and year out on the beautiful Malibu campus. Pepperdine’s most successful program has made the NCAA Championships event on 15 occasions, including seven times over the past 13 years. The Waves’ five NCAA championships (1978, 1985, 1986, 1992, 2005) are the second most of any school in the country and account for five of the nine NCAA titles that Pepperdine has won as a school. Pepperdine has finished in the top six of the final AVCA poll for the past 14 consecutive seasons (1997-2010). As a whole, the Waves have posted an overall record of 670-296 (.694) in 40 seasons and a cumulative league mark of 469-220 (.681). Since the MPSF went to its current round-robin format in 2002, Pepperdine owns the best record at 153-45 (.773). The Waves’ record in MPSF play since the league was established in 1993 is 264-103 (.719). The backbone to the program’s success is head coach Marv Dunphy. Entering his 28th season in 2011, Dunphy is just one of three coaches in any sport to win an NCAA title in four different decades. He notched his 500th career win when the Waves defeated Cal State Northridge on February 26, 2010. Dunphy, now with a career record of 507-199 (.718), is believed to have become the fifth head coach in NCAA men’s volleyball history to reach that milestone. Forty-one different Waves have earned All-American honors a total of 73 times, including 41 first-team selections since 1977. Pepperdine has claimed a National Player of the Year award in eight different seasons, including seven of the last 13 years. Six athletes have earned the honor from the American Coaches Volleyball Association, more than any other school since the AVCA began issuing the award in 1991. The men’s volleyball program played its inaugural season in 1971 under MARV DUNPHY the direction of coach Moo Park. Burt DeGroot inherited the head coaching position in 1973 and held the job for two years. Harlan Cohen took over in 1975 for two seasons and led Pepperdine to a share of the 1976 SCIVA title and a runner-up finish in the NCAA Championships. Dunphy, who played for the Waves in 1972 and 1973 and then served as an assistant coach, became head coach in 1977 and led the Waves to a 15-5 mark. In 1978, Dunphy led the Waves to their second SCIVA co-championship and first-ever NCAA championship with a 21-4 overall record. Pepperdine defeated local power UCLA in five games. Pepperdine advanced to the 1983 and 1984 NCAA title matches only to come away as runner-up to crosstown rival UCLA. The Waves continued on their historic fouryear run by winning NCAA titles in 1985 with Dunphy and 1986 under Rod Wilde. Both title-clinching victories were over USC. After a brief three-year hiatus to focus his efforts on coaching the United States National Team to a gold medal at the 1988 Olympics Games, Dunphy returned in 1989 and brought the volleyball program back to prominence in 1992 with the school’s fourth NCAA title. Pepperdine won its fifth and most recent national crown in 2005. The 1985 and 2005 teams both went 25-2, good for the best overall winning percentage (.926) in school history. The 2002 Waves won a school-record 29 matches. In addition to its five titles, Pepperdine placed second at the NCAA Championships in 1976, 1983, 1984, 1998, 2002 and 2008.

Front Row (L-R): assistant coach Kirk Kilgour, Rob Scott, Matt Dodd, Matt Rigg, Ty Kastendiek, Doug Rigg, team assistant Jack Hastings, assistant coach Gary Stephenson.

The Waves had advanced to the championship match in 1983 and 1984, but were beaten both times by UCLA. The championship was a perfect farewell gift for Pepperdine head coach Marv Dunphy, who then took a sabbatical from the Waves to coach the U.S. National Team. Pepperdine earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships after claiming the California Intercollegiate Volleyball Association title with a perfect 18-0 mark. Bob Ctvrtlik was selected the Most Valuable Player of the NCAA Championships and was joined on the all-tournament squad by teammates Mike Fitzgerald, Matt Rigg and Troy Tanner. Pepperdine completed the season with a sparkling 25-2 record (13-1 at home) and its third conference title. Ctvrtlik was named Volleyball Magazine’s National Player of the Year and he, Rigg and Rob Scott were named All-American first teamers. Ctvrtlik (first team), Rigg (first team), Scott (second team), Mark Arnold (third team), Fitzgerald (third team) and Tanner (third team) were named All-CIVA.

2005 NCAA CHAMPIONS

Back Row (L-R): Max de Wolff, Jon Grobe, John Parfitt, Sean Rooney, Andy Hein, Tom Hulse, Jonathan Winder, Alex Castillo, Brent Smith. Front Row (L-R): Corey Spencer, Steve Smith, James Ka, John Mayer, Sam Kim, Arist de Wolff, Tanner Sutherland, Tyler Haupert, Eric Liebert, Brad Carter.

If the 1985 team is considered the best Pepperdine team ever, the 2005 followed the same blueprint for building a successful team. The 2005 team resembled its 20-year predecessor, ending the season with the same 25-2 overall record (.926). Pepperdine won the national title over UCLA at Pauley Pavilion. In the championship, Pepperdine rallied back from down 2-1 to force a fifth and final game. In the deciding game, the Waves jumped out to an 8-1 lead before handing the Bruins their first postseason loss at Pauley Pavilion 30-23, 23-30, 24-30, 30-25, 15-10. Sean Rooney was tabbed the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, while John Parfitt and Jonathan Winder were selected to the all-tournament team. The Waves began their magical postseason run with an MPSF Tournament championship and continued it with an NCAA semifinal win over Ohio State, 30-16, 31-29, 30-26. Pepperdine was known as one of the top blocking teams in the nation and with Rooney (the AVCA National Player of the Year) picking apart opponents at will and Winder (the AVCA National Freshman of the Year) setting the team to a .358 hitting percentage, head coach Marv Dunphy secured the program’s fifth national title and his fourth in as many decades. Rooney and Andy Hein were named All-American first teamers and Winder was placed on the second team. Rooney was also selected as the MPSF Player of the Year while Hein (second team) and Winder (third team) garnered all-conference honors. Dunphy was named the AVCA and MPSF Coach of the Year. The Waves went 20-2 in MPSF play and captured the program’s eighth conference title, posted a 15-match win streak and finished an all-time best 14-0 at home.

OLYMPIANS The Pepperdine men’s volleyball team has a proud association with the Olympics and USA Volleyball. Pepperdine has had representatives on every team since 1984, including the gold-medal winning squads of 1984, 1988 and 2008. Dain Blanton also earned success on the beach with his gold medal in 2000. Between 1984 and 2008, Pepperdine has placed more players on the U.S. Olympic squad (15) than any other school, and its nine starters lead all other schools as well. Following is a list of all of the Waves that have taken part at the Olympics as a player or coach. FIRESTONE FIELDHOUSE YEAR-BY-YEAR AT FIRESTONE FIELDHOUSE

With the university’s move to Malibu, the Pepperdine men’s volleyball program’s permanent home opened up prior to the 1974 season with the construction of Firestone Fieldhouse. The Waves downed visiting San Diego State 15-5, 15-5, 15-8 in the team’s initial appearance at the venue. Pepperdine has established a strong homecourt edge over the course of the last 37 seasons, posting an overall record of 350-98 (.781). The Waves have posted winning home seasons in 36 of 37 campaigns and went undefeated twice, both during national championship seasons. The Waves went 10-0 in 1978 and 14-0 in 2005. Pepperdine’s most home wins came in 2002, when the Waves went 17-1. The modern, cozy facility is an excellent place to view basketball and volleyball events from both courtside bleachers and upstairs theater seats. The listed capacity is 3,104, but attendance can climb closer to 5,000 for concerts, graduation ceremonies and lectures. Named in honor of Leonard K. Firestone, the facility was officially dedicated by President Gerald R. Ford on September 20, 1975.
