SEASON INFORMATION
SPRING SEASON OUTLOOK The Pepperdine women’s golf team heads into the second half of the spring 2010 season with high expectations after an outstanding fall season and start to the spring. The Waves began the 2009-10 season with two tournament victories at the Golfweek Conference Challenge and the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational. The fall season concluded with a third-place finish at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational and a 17thplace result at the Landfall Tradition, which is where the 2010 NCAA Championships will be held in Wilmington, N.C. However, the Waves were a player short at that event due to illness. The Waves started the spring at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge with a second-place finish against a very strong field from across the country. After finishing in a tie for sixth at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational, the Waves finished in fourth place at the first annual Bruin Wave Invitational, which they co-hosted with UCLA. After a five-week break, the spring season will continue with the PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., followed by the WCC and NCAA events. Heading into April, the Waves are ranked #4 in the Golfweek/ Sagarin index and #8 by both Golf World/ NGCA and Golfstat. The Waves will be looking to improve upon last year’s terrific postseason, when they qualified for the NCAA Regionals for the 11th straight year and went on to a ninth-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Championship, which is their eighth top 10 finish over that time. It looks like the Waves will be right back in the picture as a national contender at the 2010 NCAA Championship. Head coach Laurie Gibbs is confident that the team will continue to improve and is excited to compete for a national championship. “With five players on the roster in the fall, the team was focused on working hard to improve their conditioning and being properly prepared for each tournament,” said Gibbs, the 2005 Golfweek National Coach of the Year, who is now in her 17th season. “The spring season began with the addition of a top-ranked recruit who has added depth to the team and increased competition within the team. This team has a lot of pride and the players want to finish strong at each tournament.” The team has no seniors on the roster. Junior Taylore Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./ Laurel Springs Academy) is the team captain and she has been previously honored as an All-American in 2008. Her career stroke average of 73.81 strokes is third all-time at Pepperdine. “After an excellent summer of tournament golf, Taylore came ready to play this season,” Gibbs said. “She has made the little changes in her game that now allow her to play with more consistency and feel really confident about her game under tournament pressure.”
TAYLORE KARLE Junior Martine de Gannes (Diego Martin, Trinidad) was an important part of the team’s success in the fall. Despite having to deal with some lingering injuries, de Gannes has played consistently and has averaged 76.35 strokes in seven tournaments, including a tie for ninth place at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. “Martine came back from the summer playing really well and continued her good play in the fall,” Gibbs said. “We look for her to continue to contribute to the team in the spring.” Sophomore Lisa McCloskey (Montgomery, Texas/Montgomery HS) was an All-American honorable mention selection by the NGCA after her freshman season. She finished 10th at the NCAA Championships and in November 2008 became the first women’s college player ever to break 200 with her winning score of a 17-under 199 at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. She broke the previous record held by former Wave and current LPGA pro Katherine Hull. After four solid tournaments in the fall, McCloskey started the spring with an outstanding win at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. She was the only player in a strong field to finish 54 holes with an under-par total. “Lisa has exceptional talent and will be an important part of the team’s success in the spring,” Gibbs said. “She keeps her approach
to the game very simple. She’s efficient at practice and her game is about hitting fairways and greens. When she is putting with confidence, she will win tournaments.” Golf World selected both Karle and McCloskey among their top 50 players to watch before the start of the season. Sophomores Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) and Jessica Wallace (Langley, B.C./Walnut Grove Secondary) have both played well in their first two seasons. Drolson averaged 75.30 strokes and finished second at the WCC Championships as a freshman, while Wallace contributed with a 75.64 scoring average. Both made the All-WCC first team. Both Drolson and Wallace are working hard to contribute to the team in the spring and will be an important part of the team’s finish to the season. “Kaitlin was committed to improving all aspects of her game during the summer break,” Gibbs said. “She contributed to the team’s success in the fall and continues to prepare to play well with confidence throughout the spring and into the postseason. “Jessica has been focused at practice and has worked hard to improve her overall consistency,” Gibbs said. Pepperdine’s competitive team in the fall received a big boost in the spring when it added freshman Danielle Kang (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS) to the roster. She was one of the nation’s top recruits and a three-time AJGA Rolex Junior All-American. She enrolled in January after graduating early from high school. After a 17th-place finish in her collegiate debut at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in difficult weather conditions, Kang came back with a win at the Bruin Wave Invitational, shooting 8-under-par to win by three shots over a strong field of highly ranked players. “Adding Danielle to the roster this spring immediately helped elevate the team to the top of women’s college golf,” Gibbs said. “Her personality is very relaxed and positive. Danielle is very mature for her age and has adjusted quickly to the college environment. I believe she has the talent to earn an AllAmerican selection in just one semester.” The Waves have high hopes for postseason play, which begins with the West Coast Conference Championships in midApril and the NCAA events in May. “We know that we are really solid all the way through the lineup,” said Gibbs, who is assisted by Saki Uechi. “We enjoyed co-hosting the first annual Bruin Wave Invitational with UCLA at Robinson Ranch Golf Club, which allowed everyone a chance to play. They all know what parts of their game need some work to produce the required scores to win tournaments against very strong fields. I think this team has a very good chance to end the season with a top five NCAA Championship finish.”

NCAA RECORDS FALL IN LAS VEGAS
The Pepperdine women’s golf team made history at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in October 2008, as the Waves won the team title and set NCAA records for the lowest score (823) and score relative to par (41-under). Also, Pepperdine freshman Lisa McCloskey won the tournament by one stroke and became the first women’s college golfer ever to break the 200 mark with her 17-under 199. The tournament was contested at the par-72 Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev., on Oct. 27-29 and was hosted by UNLV. The previous individual record was Pepperdine’s Katherine Hull’s 16-under 200 at the 2003 San Jose State Spartan Invitational. The previous team records were 834 (Duke at the 2005 Stanford Invitational) and 24-under (UCLA at the 2005 Las Vegas Intercollegiate). McCloskey shot a 67-65-67 and did not suffer a single bogey in her 54 holes while scoring 15 birdies and one eagle. Three other Waves finished in the top 10: Jayvie Agojo was sixth, Taylore Karle tied for seventh and Kaitlin Drolson tied for ninth. Pepperdine’s record book was completely rewritten by the tournament, including: • school-record scores for 18 holes (18-under 270), 36 holes (26-under 250) and 54 holes (41-under 823); • additionally, the #2 (15-under 273) and #5 (8-under 280) 18-hole team scores; • McCloskey setting school records for 36 holes (12-under 132) and 54 holes (17-under 199); • the #4 (tied) 54-hole individual score (Jayvie Agojo’s 8-under 208); • the #3 (tied) individual round in school history (7-under 65s by McCloskey and Agojo); • the #6 (tied) individual round in school history (6-under 66 by Karle)

COACH BIOGRAPHIES
LAURIE GIBBS HEAD COACH 17TH SEASON Recognized by her peers as one of the top collegiate women’s golf coaches in the country, Laurie Gibbs is in her 17th season as head coach of the Pepperdine women’s golf team in 2009-10. During her tenure, Gibbs has taken a program that started out with limited resources and funding and turned it into one of national prominence. Through her tireless work ethic and diligent recruiting, Gibbs has Pepperdine contending for a national championship on a yearly basis. The last 11 seasons have established Pepperdine as one of the nation’s top golf programs. The Waves have appeared in the NCAA Championships nine times, with eight top 10 finishes and four top five showings, including a program-best second-place result in 2003. Her players have earned All-American honors 18 times. Gibbs has led Pepperdine to West Coast Conference championships in 11 of the last 12 years, including a current streak of eight titles that began in 2002. Over the course of her career (through March 2010), the Waves have won 36 team tournament titles and have had 38 individual medalist honors. Gibbs was selected the 2004-05 National Coach of the Year by Golfweek, was tabbed the West Region Coach of the Year on two occasions (1999 and 2003) and has been honored nine times as the WCC’s Coach of the Year (1998, ‘99, ‘00, ‘02, ‘03, ‘05, ‘06, ‘07 and ‘08). She has also been honored twice as Pepperdine’s Coach of the Year (1998-99 and 2002-03). In addition to securing the use of four quality facilities for practice purposes, Gibbs has helped improve the on-campus practice facilities at Pepperdine and has stepped up the Waves’ recruiting efforts. In 2007, the program fundraising efforts during Gibbs’ tenure went over $1 million. After serving on the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, Gibbs was selected to serve a four-year term (2003-07) as one of three coaches on the Division I NCAA Women’s Golf Committee. She also served on the USGA/NCAA Intercollegiate Committee. After a one-year absence, Gibbs returned Pepperdine to the NCAA Championships in 2009 with a lineup that featured three freshmen. Thanks to a late rally at the NCAA West Regional that saw Pepperdine claim the eighth and final qualifying spot, the Waves went on to a ninth-place result at the NCAA Championships. Pepperdine won three tournaments during the season, including an NCAA-record-setting performance at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, where the Waves shot a 41-under 823. Lisa McCloskey earned All-American honorable mention notice. Pepperdine, under Gibbs’ leadership, was a national contender again in 2007 and finished seventh at the NCAA Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla. All-Americans Eileen Vargas and Misun Cho posted top 30 finishes to lead the Waves. The Waves ended up ranked #5 by both Golfstat and Golfweek/Sagarin. The Waves earned a third-place showing at the 2006 NCAA Championships at the Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio, and Vargas and Carolina Llano were named All-

2008-09 IN REVIEW
2008-09 RECAP A fantastic postseason lifted the 2008-09 Pepperdine women’s golf team to its eighth consecutive West Coast Conference championship and a ninth-place result at the NCAA Championships. Things looked bleak at the NCAA West Regional, as Pepperdine was tied for 10th after the first round and dropped to 11th after the second round. The Waves still trailed three other schools for the eighth and final qualifying position with four holes to play, but for the remainder of the round, Pepperdine’s scoring players shot 1-under while Texas A&M (7-over), Arkansas (5-over) and California (4-over) went by the wayside. Pepperdine’s momentum carried into the NCAA Championships, held at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. Although the Waves began the event tied for 17th place, they worked their way up to 13th and then ninth. That would be Pepperdine’s eighth top 10 result in the last 11 seasons. Lisa McCloskey, who would be named an NGCA AllAmerican honorable mention, finished in 10th place as an individual. McCloskey also had the top highlight during the regular season. She broke former Pepperdine All-American Katherine Hull’s NCAA record and became the first women’s college golfer ever to break 200 with a 17-under 199 at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in October 2008. She was one of three different Waves to win medalist honors during the season. Taylore Karle won the two-round Wave Invitational at Moorpark Country Club, while Jayvie Agojo won the WCC Championships for the second time. The Waves won three team titles over the course of the year. In addition to the program’s 11th WCC title, Pepperdine broke NCAA records as a team with its 41-under 823 at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. The home team also won its own six-team Wave Invitational in March. The Waves’ success came despite the fact their regular lineup consisted of one senior, one sophomore and three freshmen. All five Pepperdine golfers — Agojo, Karle, McCloskey, Kaitlin Drolson and Jessica Wallace — made the All-WCC first team. McCloskey was also chosen as the WCC’s Freshman of the Year.

PEPPERDINE HISTORY
PEPPERDINE GOLF HISTORY In just over a decade, the women’s golf program has reached rare heights and has become a national championship contender under head coach Laurie Gibbs, who will be in her 17th year as head coach in 2009-10. Since fielding its first team during the 1985-86 school year, the Pepperdine program made steady progress before exploding onto the national scene in 1999. Pepperdine has made nine appearances at the NCAA Championships in the last 11 years, finishing in the top 10 eight times and receiving national Top 10 rankings on eight occasions. The Waves have also won 11 West Coast Conference championships, including the last eight in a row. Kerry Hopps, the head golf professional at the nearby Woodland Hills Country Club, served as Pepperdine’s head coach during the program’s first six years. Hopps relinquished her head coaching duties prior to the 1991-92 season. She was succeeded by Kristy Hopkins, a former basketball standout and golfer at Pepperdine, who held the spot for two seasons. In an effort to further elevate the program, Gibbs, a former teaching professional at The Wilshire Country Club, was hired as the program’s first-ever full-time head coach in the fall of 1993. Gibbs initiated an aggressive recruiting and fundraising effort and quickly succeeded in building a nationally recognized program in Malibu. Gibbs was honored as the 2005 National Coach of the Year by Golfweek and the 1999 and 2003 NGCA West Region Coach of the Year. Additionally, she has been tabbed the West Coast Conference’s Coach of the Year nine times. Under Gibbs, the Waves won the WCC championship for the first time in 1998, and then advanced to the NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships for the first time in 1999. The Waves posted a fifth-place finish at the Tulsa (Okla.) Country Club. Making the accomplishment all
the more impressive was the fact that Pepperdine reached new heights with a roster made up entirely of underclassmen. Pepperdine completed the 1998-99 season ranked No. 7 nationally in the final MasterCard rankings. The Waves competed in 12 tournaments during the course of the campaign, winning four events and finishing among the top five teams 11 times. In fact, the team’s “worst” outing of the season was a respectable sixth-place finish at the 20-team NCAA West Regional Championships in Houston. With two freshmen in its lineup in 2000, Pepperdine placed eighth at the NCAA Championships at the Crosswater Course in Sunriver, Ore. The Waves received a No. 5 national ranking in the Sagarin rankings and finished No. 9 in the MasterCard poll. The Waves placed 14th at the 2001 NCAA Championships contested at the Mission Inn Golf Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. Pepperdine was ranked No. 10 nationally by Golfstat, No. 11 by Golfweek and No. 12 in the final MasterCard listing. The Waves recorded top 10 finishes in 10 of 11 events, including a first-place finish at the UCLA Pioneer Bruin Classic. Pepperdine tied Arizona State for ninth place at the 2002 NCAA Championships, played at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash. The Waves were ranked No. 9 in the final Golfstat rankings and No. 12 by Golfweek. Pepperdine claimed three outright team titles, winning the Southern California California Intercollegiate, UCLA Pioneer Electronics Bruin Classic and WCC Championships. The Waves also tied UCLA for first place at the NCAA West Regional Championships at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif. Led by Gibbs, Pepperdine enjoyed its finest season ever during the 2002-03 campaign. The Waves advanced to the NCAA Championships, and led by senior All-Americans Katherine Hull and Lindsey Wright, produced their best-ever showing as they finished second at the event in West Lafayette, Ind. national championships, Pepperdine registered a school-record five straight tournaments during the spring and gained its first-ever No. 1 national ranking. The Waves qualified for their fifth straight NCAA Championships after placing fourth at the NCAA West Regional Championships at the Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. Hull led Pepperdine’s run toward a national championship as she was tabbed the National Player of the Year and the recipient of the Dinah Shore Trophy Award. A three-time All-American, Hull climbed her way to a No. 1 national ranking before concluding the year with a 72.82 stroke average. Pepperdine produced another record-breaking season during the 2004-05 campaign as it finished in the top 10 in all 10 tournaments for the first time in school history. The Waves captured the prestigious Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge and claimed their seventh WCC championship while posting runner-up finishes at the Stanford Intercollegiate and UNLV Spring Invitational. Pepperdine capped its season with an impressive showing at the NCAA Championships where it led after two rounds before finishing fourth. The Waves were ranked No. 4 nationally in Golfstat and Golfweek’s final rankings. The team was led by junior second team All-American Carolina Llano, who tied for sixth at the NCAA Championships, and sophomore Eileen Vargas, who received honorable mention All-American recognition. Gibbs was named the National Coach of the year. For the third time in four years, the Pepperdine women’s golf team made a significant run at a national championship as the Waves held the lead for a time during the final round before finishing third at the 2006 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships, held at the Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio, before finishing third. It was another remarkable season for Pepperdine as the Waves finished in the top five in 10 of the 11 tournaments in which they competed in, claiming victories at the Branch Law/Dick McGuire Invitational, Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, Santa Clara Colby Invitational and WCC Championships. The Waves were ranked No. 5 nationally in the final Golfstat poll and No. 7 by Golfweek and were led by Vargas, an All-American second
teamer, and Llano, who received All-American honorable mention recognition. The 2007 season brought another impressive finish for the Waves, as they placed seventh at both the NCAA West Regional and the NCAA Championships, held at the LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Misun Cho earned All-American second team honors and Jayvie Agojo and Vargas claimed honorable mention notice. Pepperdine returned to the NCAA Championships in 2009 thanks to a thrilling late rally at the NCAA West Regional where the Waves claimed the eighth and final spot in the final few holes. At the NCAAs, the Waves achieved a ninth-place finish. Lisa McCloskey earned All-American honorable mention honors. Since Gibbs took over in 1993-94, Pepperdine has recorded 34 tournament victories and has had its players earn first-place finishes 36 times. Additionally, nine different players have earned All-American honors a total of 18 times.

PEPPERDINE HISTORY
ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS Pepperdine Coach Laurie Gibbs takes pride in the accomplishments of her golfers both on and off the course. College golf is one of the few sports that competes throughout the entire school year and many of the tournaments are played during the week, which can result in student-athletes missing a substantial amount of class time. Student-athletes at Pepperdine benefit from small class sizes that allow them to develop an understanding with their professors. Pepperdine has received invitations to compete at every major collegiate golf tournament, and Gibbs is careful to craft a schedule that avoids conflicts with midterms and finals. PEPPERDINE HISTORY
LIFE AFTER PEPPERDINE During her 17 seasons as the head coach of the Pepperdine women’s golf program, Laurie Gibbs has recruited players that succeed both academically and on the golf course throughout their collegiate careers. However, their accomplishments are not restricted to just their time spent in Malibu. Many players have gone on to successful careers in the business world and some are continuing to play golf at the professional level. Here’s a list of some of those student-athletes who have taken their collegiate successes into the real world.

THIS IS
“What we hope to build is much more than a beautiful campus. It will, as you can sense, be that. But if that is all we shall have accomplished, we shall have failed. What we hope to create here, in these hills, is a spirit of place. A place where minds will be opened, where lives will be changed, where lasting relationships will be formed.” — Seaver College Dedication, May 23, 1970
PEPPERDINE
• Malibu is located right alongside the Pacific Ocean, just about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Pepperdine’s picturesque campus is just a few hundred yards up the hill from Malibu Beach. The Malibu area, as well as all of Southern California, offers tremendous recreation, sporting and entertainment opportunities.
• Pepperdine’s motto is “Freely ye received, freely give” (Matt. 10:8).
• Pepperdine is an independent, medium-sized Christian institution committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values. • Approximately 8,000 students are enrolled in five colleges and schools, including Seaver College, the flagship undergraduate school of liberal arts and sciences. A bachelor’s degree is available in nearly 40 areas of study. • Pepperdine was ranked number 56 by the U.S. News and World Report’s list of America’s best colleges in 2009 (and is the only West Coast Conference school in the top 100). • Pepperdine was awarded the title of “Most Beautiful Campus” by the Princeton Review in 2005. • The student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1.
UNIVERSITY • Students and alumni consistently cite the quality, accessibility and caring nature of the faculty and staff as among Pepperdine’s major strengths. • There are 395 full-time teaching faculty, and 98% of full-time faculty have earned doctoral degrees. Students are provided with experiential opportunities, including research projects and internships so that their knowledge can be put to practice. • 75% of Pepperdine undergraduates receive some form of financial assistance. • Pepperdine University is respected both nationally and internationally. Students come to Pepperdine from all 50 states and more than 70 countries worldwide. Additionally, nearly 60% of Pepperdine’s undergraduate students study abroad at one point within one more than 20 international programs. • Pepperdine was recently voted as having the seventhbest study-abroad program in the nation by the Institute of International Education. Study-abroad programs include Heidelberg, Germany; London, England; Florence, Italy; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Lausanne, Switzerland; and Shanghai, China. • Among the 38 different majors offered, the top five at Seaver College are business administration, advertising, international studies, international business, psychology and political science. • The University was founded in 1937 by George Pepperdine, a Christian businessman who established the Western Auto Supply Company.
ATHLETIC
Pepperdine is classified as an NCAA Division I-AAA school (Division I schools that do not sponsor football), and the Waves are one of the very best of their kind. Since the I-AAA Athletic Director’s Association All-Sports Trophy was established, ranking the various schools on their postseason success, Pepperdine has finished in the top six every single time, including in first place twice (2004-05 and 2005-06). In the annual NACDA Director’s Cup standings, which measures overall postseason success, Pepperdine has finished first among all of its West Coast Conference rivals for 13 straight years.
Men’s Basketball
Jennifer Lacy
Over the years, the Pepperdine men’s basketball program has made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, captured at least a share of 16 conference titles, won three West Coast Conference Tournament titles and sent dozens of players into professional basketball. Head coach Tom Asbury was one of the top coaches in the WCC’s history from 1989-94 and he has returned to Malibu to help the program thrive once again.
Baseball
The 1992 College World Series champions, Pepperdine baseball has recorded a remarkable 32 straight 30-win seasons. The Waves have advanced to the NCAA Championships 25 times, including five times under head coach Steve Rodriguez. Pepperdine has captured 17 regularseason WCC crowns and four WCC Championship Series titles. Twenty-nine alums have gone on to success in Major League Baseball. Dan Haren
Yakhouba Diawara
Women’s Basketball
With seven postseason appearances in the last 11 seasons, the Pepperdine women’s basketball team has developed into a consistent winner and a contender in the West Coast Conference. The Waves made their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2000 with an at-large bid, then captured the WCC Tournament title and subsequent NCAA appearances in 2002, 2003 and 2006, the most recent coming under head coach Julie Rousseau.
Cross Country / Track
Head coach Robert Radnoti has the goal of national prominence for his cross country and track programs. The Waves were extremely strong in these sports at their SouthCentral campus from the 1930s to the 1960s, with All-Americans and Olympians to their credit. However, the programs were dropped briefly when the university moved its campus to Malibu. The Waves have made great strides in cross country over the years and track was added again in the past few years.
Women’s Soccer
One of the youngest programs on Pepperdine’s campus, the women’s soccer team has quickly developed into among the strongest in recent years. Since its inaugural season in 1993, the Waves have posted 10-win seasons 10 times and made the NCAA Tournament five straight years from 2001-05. Head coach Tim Ward has helped his Waves reach the NCAA’s Sweet 16 on two occasions.
Anna Picarelli
SUCCESS Men’s Volleyball
Pepperdine’s most successful program has won five NCAA men’s volleyball championships, second-most of any school, with the last title coming in 2005. The program is synonymous with head coach Marv Dunphy, who was responsible for four of the titles and has also had a long association with USA Volleyball. Pepperdine has made the NCAA Championships event on 15 occasions, including six times in the past decade.
Jonathan Winder
Men’s Golf
The 1997 NCAA men’s golf champions and a regular at the top of the West Coast Conference’s leaderboard, Pepperdine competes with the nation’s best. The Waves have won 16 WCC titles since 1987 and have 11 straight NCAA regional appearances. Pepperdine won the NCAA title in John Geiberger’s first season and have posted two other top 10 national finishes.
Michael Putnam
Women’s Volleyball
Andre Begemann
For most of its history, the Pepperdine women’s volleyball program has boasted one of the nation’s top coaches in Nina Matthies, who took over in 1983. Since the West Coast Conference added women’s volleyball, the Waves have been the league’s dominant program with 10 titles. Since 1981, the Waves have made 20 trips to the NCAA Championships, including 11 in the last 12 years.
Men’s Tennis
No team has been more consistent then Pepperdine’s men’s tennis program, which wins the West Coast Conference title and makes the NCAA Tournament with amazing regularity. The Waves have won 40 WCC titles, including 19 in a row. Led by head coach Adam Steinberg, the Waves reached the pinnacle in 2006 and won the national championship.
Jesse Smith
Men’s Water Polo
Pepperdine was the host site of the 1984 Olympic water polo competition, so it should be no surprise that the Waves excel in the sport. Pepperdine has advanced to the NCAA Championships 12 times in its history and captured the national crown in 1997. Current coach Jack Kocur was a player on that title team. The Waves have won at least a share of conference titles nine times and have finished in the top 10 in the national rankings every year since 1976.
Katie Wilkins
Women’s Golf
In the last 16 seasons since Laurie Gibbs became head coach, the Pepperdine women’s golf program has developed into a national championship contender. The Waves have won 11 WCC titles, been to 11 straight NCAA Regional tournaments and have made nine NCAA Championships appearances. The Waves finished second in the nation in 2003 and boast four top-five finishes.
Katherine Hull
Sylvia Kosakowski
Women’s Tennis
No coach has been on staff at Pepperdine for more consecutive years than Gualberto Escudero, who took over as women’s tennis head coach in 1977-78. His tenure has featured WCC titles (21, including seven in a row), NCAA Tournament appearances (26, with 12 in a row) and top 25 finishes (including eight times in the nation’s top 10). Lindsay Adarme
Women’s Swimming & Diving
For more than 20 years, Pepperdine has thrived in the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference. The Waves have had nine consecutive topfive finishes under head coach Nick Rodionoff, including a program-best-tying secondplace finish in 2008. Ten of Pepperdine’s 20 record times have come under Rodionoff’s watch.

COMMUNITY
Pepperdine University’s goal is to “strengthen lives for purpose, service and leadership” and the Pepperdine Athletics Department is a strong believer in helping its student-athletes to meet this goal. The school’s athletic teams embrace the concept of volunteerism and service to the community. Teams are regularly taking on projects that will better the lives of others. Step Forward is an annual day held each fall that is devoted to community service, when more than a thousand Pepperdine students, staff, faculty and alumni will disperse throughout Southern California in order to lend a hand to those in need. Pepperdine’s athletic teams have been front and center as part of this event, as well as other service opportunities year-round.
LIFE SKILLS/SAAC The Pepperdine University Athletics Department is committed to a program of life skills that provides educational experiences and services in order to develop well-balanced life styles for student-athletes; to encourage growth in decision making, planning and fulfillment of career and life goals; and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the university setting. The program is required for every incoming freshman and transfer student-athlete. Nationally recognized speakers and a life skills class are part of the program. Topics are chosen to support the following commitment purpose statements: • Commitment to Academic Excellence — To support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation. • Commitment to Athletics Excellence — To build philosophical foundations for the development of athletics programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student athlete.
• Commitment to Personal Development — To support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for studentathletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision making skills. • Commitment to Service — To engage the studentathlete in service to his/her campus and surrounding communities. • Commitment to Career Development — To encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals. The Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) is comprised of two student leaders from each athletic team at Pepperdine. National SAACs at a glance: • Generate a student-athlete voice within the NCAA structure. • Solicit student-athlete response to proposed NCAA legislation. • Recommend potential NCAA legislation. • Review, react and comment to the governance structure on legislation, activities and subjects of interest. • Actively participate in the administrative process of athletics programs and the NCAA. • Promote a positive student-athlete image.

WCC
When the West Coast Conference first got its start back in 1952, the founders really had only one goal in mind — to create a convenient way for five Bay Area schools to play basketball. What has grown from that original vision some 57 years ago is a marvelously cohesive athletics league that is competitive at a national level in 13 sports. The eight current members of the WCC span the western coast of the United States from Canada to Mexico. Though the institutions range from the pine forests of Eastern Washington to the sun-drenched beaches of Southern California, the combined excellence in academics and athletics sets the conference apart on the national scene and draws the individual institutions together in a common mission. The WCC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball. Originally chartered as the California Basketball Association, the five-team league included Pacific, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, San Jose State and Santa Clara, and the firstever men’s basketball game was played January 2, 1953. After three seasons of play under that name, the conference expanded to include Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in 1955, and became known as the West Coast Athletic Conference in 1956. The name was shortened in 1989. The current alignment of Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, University of Portland, Saint Mary’s College, University of San Diego, University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University has remained unchanged since 1979, making the WCC the third-most stable athletic conference in the nation. Only the Ivy League and the Pacific-10 Conference have been together longer. Women’s sports were incorporated into the WCC prior to the 1985-86 season, and the league has made steady improvements in several sports, particularly basketball, soccer and volleyball. Since joining the WCC prior to the 1955-56 season, Pepperdine has claimed 129 WCC regular-season team championships in the following sports: baseball (17), men’s basketball (12), women’s basketball (4), men’s golf (16), women’s golf (11), women’s soccer (1), men’s tennis (40), women’s tennis (21) and women’s volleyball (10). Additionally, the men’s and women’s basketball team have each won the league’s postseason tournament three times. The baseball team has won the WCC Championship Series four times. The league relocated its headquarters in the summer of 1998 to San Bruno near the San Francisco International Airport. The WCC hired Jamie Zaninovich as its commissioner in March 2008.
MPSF
The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation was established during the 1992-93 academic year to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. The Federation has served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. In men’s volleyball, the Waves have won five regular season and four tournament titles. Pepperdine competes against BYU, Cal State Northridge, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Pacific, Stanford, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and USC. MPSF schools have won 14 of the 17 NCAA men’s volleyball championships since the conference was created (including one by Pepperdine). In men’s water polo, the Waves have won two regular-season crowns. Pepperdine competes against California, Long Beach State, Pacific, Stanford, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and USC. MPSF schools have won all 17 NCAA men’s water polo championships since the conference was created (including one by Pepperdine).
PCSC
Pepperdine has been a member of the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference for more than 20 years. The PCSC has allowed a number of swimming programs of all shape and size — NCAA Division I, II and III and the NAIA — who are not affiliated with a major conference to come together and participate at a championship meet. The Waves swim against AlaskaFairbanks, Biola, California Baptist, Cal State East Bay, Chapman, Concordia, Fresno Pacific, Loyola Marymount, Northern Colorado, Seattle, Soka, UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz. Pepperdine has always been among the top programs in the PCSC and tied its best-ever finish with a second-place showing in 2008.
