PEPPERDINE HISTORY

Since its inaugural season in 1993, the Pepperdine women’s soccer program has turned out one winning team after another. During its 24 seasons, Pepperdine has posted 10-victory campaigns 16 times and has put together a sterling overall record of 267-154-57 (.618). One constant for nearly the entire history of Pepperdine soccer has been Tim Ward. He missed out on only the very first season, as Ward joined the Waves as an assistant coach in 1994. After four seasons, he was elevated to head coach in 1998, and he has since guided the Waves to tremendous results. Under Ward, the Waves made their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2001 (and nine overall) and posted 15 winning seasons, including eight consecutive from 1999-2006. Arguably Pepperdine’s best-ever season came in 2002, as the Waves went 182-2 and earned the West Coast Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Though the Waves finished in a tie for first place at 6-1-0, their wins over perennial powers Portland and Santa Clara gave them the crown. Ward was named runner-up as National Coach of the Year as the 2002 Waves advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the first time, and ended the year ranked fifth in the nation. The Waves repeated that feat in 2005, winning their first two NCAA Tournament matches to advance to the Round of 16 again. Pepperdine ended the year ranked 15th. Pepperdine won its second WCC title in 2011, tying for first place with San Diego but earning the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament due to a headto-head win over the Toreros. The Waves ended the season ranked 10th. The 2012 squad made its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The 2014 campaign again gave 2002 a run for its money as the best Pepperdine season as the Waves made their third Sweet 16 appearance after downing USC and Illinois State to advance. The Waves finished the year ranked No. 10 overall after picking up wins over perennial powers North Carolina, Kentucky, USC (twice), Santa Clara, Portland and BYU. Ward was named NSCAA West Region Coach of the Year. 2016 saw the program win its third WCC Championship, matching BYU with a 7-1-1 record and earning the league’s automatic bid after beating the Cougars in their regular-season matchup. The Waves made the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in program history. Five Pepperdine players have earned All-American honors. Lynn Williams became the program’s first-ever first-team All-American in 2015 after earning the top honor from both the NSCAA and Soccer America. Susan Palmer was honorable mention by Soccer Buzz in 2001, Ashley Swanson was third team in 2002 and honorable mention in 2004 (both by Soccer Buzz), Megan Woods was third team by both Soccer Buzz and the NSCAA in 2005 and Michelle Pao was second team by the NSCAA in 2011. The Waves have made Tari Frahm Rokus Field a tremendous homefield advantage over the years, posting winning records on their own field in all 23 seasons and compiling an overall record of 159-49-29 (.732). Pepperdine produced its first Olympian in 2012 when goalkeeper Roxanne Barker, prior to her senior season, played for South Africa during the London Games. She would also play for South Africa in the 2016 games. Barker was drafted by Portland Thorns FC in the first-ever NWSL Draft of 2013, while Anisa Guajardo was allocated to the Boston Breakers as a member of the Mexican National Team. Guajardo went on to represent Mexico at the 2015 World Cup. Lynn Williams would go on to be selected sixth overall in the 2015 NWSL Draft by the Western New York Flash. Williams would go on to win an NWSL MVP and Golden Boot award in 2016, while also breaking through with the U.S. Women’s National Team that year. Jennifer Evans, who played for the first four Pepperdine teams from 1993-96 and still holds many of the program’s records, became the first women’s soccer player to be inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012. Anna Picarelli (2002-05) followed as a 2016 Pepperdine Hall of Fame inductee.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS

The Pepperdine women’s soccer team has been to the NCAA postseason seven times: a five-year run from 2001-05 and again in 2011 and 2012. The Waves made trips to the “Sweet 16” in both 2002 and 2005. The Waves have an all-time postseason record of 6-7 and have advanced out of the first round in four of their seven times in the NCAA Championships. Pepperdine has earned a national seed on three occasions (2002, 2005 and 2011).

2001 Tournament Summary Making its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament, the Pepperdine women’s soccer team traveled to nearby Westwood to take on local rival USC at Drake Stadium. After a scoreless first half, sophomore Janelle Hillseth scored late in the game to give the Waves a 1-0 lead. Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Brouilette registered four saves to preserve the victory. In another tightly contested match, Pepperdine’s NCAA Tournament run came to an end when the Waves lost to host and #3-ranked UCLA, 2-1. After surrendering an own goal, freshman Ali Pavoni tied the game for the Waves when she headed in a free kicky by freshman Ashley Swanson. But the Bruins broke the tie early in the second half and held on for the win. First Round Nov. 16 — Los Angeles, Calif. 2002 Tournament Summary As a national #3 seed, the Pepperdine women’s soccer team traveled to Milwaukee, Wis., for its second consecutive postseason appearance. On a chilling 31-degree night, the Waves opened tournament play against WisconsinMilwaukee. Just before the first half ended, freshman Megan Woods scored at the 26:57 mark. With just less than three minutes left in the match and as snow flurries fell, Woods sealed the win when she scored her second goal of the night. Pepperdine faced Wisconsin in a second-round match and despite surrendering an early goal, the Waves had a dramatic ending as junior Lacey Ubaldi tied it in the 83rd minute, and freshman Jenna Fodor scored at the 99:42 mark in overtime for a 2-1 victory, sending Pepperdine into its first-ever Sweet 16. The Waves’ inspirational run came to an end when they lost to Michigan, 2-0, in Ann Arbor. First Round Nov. 15 — Milwaukee, Wis. Tournament Summary The Pepperdine women’s soccer team made its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, returning to a familiar place to face a pair of well-known opponents. The Waves traveled to UCLA’s Drake Stadium and opened play against crosstown rival USC. Pepperdine won thanks to a 15th-minute unassisted goal by senior Lacey Ubaldi. But the Waves’ season ended the same way it had two years earlier, as the host Bruins prevailed 2-0 in the second round.

Tournament Summary Making its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, the Waves were sent over to UCLA for the third time. This time, the Waves faced the Bruins, the national #14 seed, in the opening round. The two teams battled evenly for 80 minutes before the Bruins finally broke the deadlock and went on for a 1-0 win. The Waves stayed in the game in large part to junior goalkeeper Anna Picarelli, who had eight saves.

Tournament Summary In its fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, fourth-seeded Pepperdine traveled to Nashville, Tenn. to face Mississippi in the first round. With both teams playing the ball back and forth, junior Lindsey Redlin found space and the back of the net to score the lone goal of the game. The Waves dominated Samford in the second round, outshooting the Bulldogs 24-13. Senior Megan Woods scored both goals to send the Waves to their second “Sweet 16” appearance. The Waves traveled to Chapel Hill, N.C., where they faced top-seed UNC. Pepperdine struggled to get on the board as the Tar Heels won, 6-0, to end the Waves’ run in the NCAA Tournament. Senior goalkeeper Anna Picarelli came up big as she recorded 14 saves for the team.

2014

Tournament Summary Pepperdine returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2011 after a five-year absence and claimed a national seed after a fantastic regular season that saw the Waves earn a share of the WCC title and the conference’s automatic bid. The Waves, who were given a #3 seed in their region (#9-12 overall) were given host duties for the first time ever in the NCAA Tournament. Though Pepperdine put 12 shots on goal against Long Beach State, none would make it through to the back of the net. And in overtime, the 49ers’ Nadia Link made a run up the left side of the field and scored a golden goal on a twisting shot. LBSU would end up making the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Tournament Summary The Waves ran their NCAA Tournament streak to two consecutive years and earned their seventh appearance overall with an at-large bid. For the second year in a row, Pepperdine was awarded a first-round home match, but also for the second straight year, the Waves were given one of the toughest first-round matchups. The Waves looked extremely dangerous early, but were unable to put any of their chances away, and the Golden Bears got stronger as the match went on. It stayed scoreless until the 87th minute when the Waves were unable to get the ball cleared away quickly, and Cal’s Ariana Martinez pounced on it and scored from a few yards away.

Tournament Summary After climbing as high as No. 7 in the national polls the Waves earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as one of three WCC teams to make the field. As a national #4 seed Pepperdine opened the tournament by hosting USC and advanced on penalty kicks after the teams played to a 1-1 tie through regulation and two overtimes. Pepperdine won 4-2 in the shootout. The Waves then took on Illinois State at UCLA in the second round and powered their way into the Sweet 16 with a 4-0 victory. Lynn Williams had a pair of goals and one assist in the convincing win. Pepperdine ran into topranked UCLA in the Sweet 16 after that and despite holding the Bruins scoreless for 87 minutes, fell 1-0 after a late UCLA goal.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS 2016

Tournament Summary The 2016 Pepperdine Waves entered the tournament after winning the program’s third WCC title and edging BYU for the league’s automatic bid. The Waves hosted California in the opening round of the tournament and after the teams played to a 1-1 draw, Pepperdine advanced 3-2 on penalty kicks. The Waves then traveled to Stanford for the second round, where they would take on North Carolina State in the round of 32. TARI FRAHM ROKUS FIELD

In its inaugural season of intercollegiate play in 1993, the Pepperdine women’s soccer program quickly built a distinct home-field advantage at Tari Frahm Rokus Field by posting an 8-1-0 home record. The run of success has continued throughout the program’s 24-year history. At the start of the 2016 season, Pepperdine’s all-time home record at Tari Frahm Rokus Field stands at 159-49-29 (.732). The Waves played their first-ever match at Tari Frahm Rokus Field on Sept. 6, 1993, but lost 3-2 to Seattle University in overtime. However, the team rebounded to win its final eight home matches that year. The Waves have posted a winning record at home in every one of their 24 seasons, including a perfect mark of 10-0-0 in 2002 as they made their run to the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament. The Waves had an undefeated home record for the second time in 2006, going 7-0-2, and again in 2010 with a mark of 6-0-3. The team posted its second most home wins three years ago, going 9-1-1 in 2014. Pepperdine celebrated its 100th home victory on Sept. 26, 2009, following a 6-0 win vs. Idaho State. The original dirt track was renovated in 1989 thanks to a donation by longtime Malibu residents Dorothy and Ed Stotsenberg. The facility was transformed into an Olympicsized, eight-lane track with an all-weather surface. Construction of a Bermuda grass playing surface with subterranean drainage was completed during the summer of 1998 by Valley Crest Landscaping, a company that has constructed numerous Major League Baseball and National Football League stadiums and various venues for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. A new electronic scoreboard was added to the facility prior to the 1999 campaign. During the summer of 2013, four lanes of the track were removed, allowing the soccer field to be greatly widened.
