Wow. Santa’s just about to do his rounds again and it doesn’t seem that long ago he was doing his last lot of rounds. This year has certainly flown by. It seems unreal that it is 8 months since the rally in Victor Harbor and in four months we will be back there. Well that’s something to look forward to at least.
N
o doubt we have all had some great rides to great events throughout this great country throughout the year. With members in each state this is certainly possible. Its good to see we have keen members in Darwin now along with Tassie and West Australia.
On the subject of Rallies its really good to see that the Canberra group is enthusiastically planning for the 2015 Rally which will be held in that beautiful city. I am sure that it will be one to look forward to. One of my favourite things at these rallies is the display where you get the chance to see such a wide range of machines, many of which are getting more rare each year. They may be pristine machines or they may be unrestored, the great thing is that they are there and someone has made the effort to collect and preserve these wonderful machines. It doesn’t matter if they are not a concours restored machine, just bring them along and

put them in the show. Well we have had some crazy times here in Queensland with the new bikie laws. A lot has been said and a lot of people have been pulled over However I don’t know of any of our members having been hassled. The old cut off denim jacket over your leather jacket would probably bring some attention and of course the way you ride will make a difference too. It all seems a bit over the top however I must say, the sentence’s do need a bit of an overhaul when you see home invaders being put on bail after bashing the home owner and eight years for murder Well folks, its nearly that time of the year so I would like to take the opportunity to wish all our members and their families safe traveling and a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. Take care - John McNair

Words Ian Stevens It's been quite slow couple of months but as summer is now coming were hoping for more action! We had a club ride to the first Bungendore Show and shine on October 5 at Bungendore, where yours truly picked up best Jap bike award. It was a great day for a ride; sunny blue skies etc, however on the way back the bike started to play up. It must have had a funny 5 minutes because she seems fine now. We will see as I am off to the tiddlers rally this weekend at Nowra.
We had a "Bike Fest’’ (Motorcycle Awareness Week) here in the ACT starting October 13 which involved the VJMC. We had a stall to promote the vintage Japanese bikes scene in Canberra and to promote the up and coming rally in 2014, and of course the VJMC rally here in the ACT IN 2015 /2016. (ps; your truly also won third prize in the show and shine as well!) If anyone has ideas on some rides, shed days etc you might like to do, please contact me on 0407 706 705 or come to a club meeting at the Canberra club on Moore street on the third Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm.
I found this one on Google. So simple, yet so effective. All you have to use is plain old cooking aluminium foil. I tried it and it is great on chrome and should work great on rims.
I have tried using Steel Wool, but it does not take off the lumps of rust, however it doesn’t scratch the surface. Wet and dry works well at taking off the lumps, but leaves fine scratches where you are rubbing, even with 1500 grade. The foil seems to take off those annoying lumps without a scratch in sight. I was pleasantly surprised. H ow it wo r ks A common way to clean a rusted chrome surface such as a fender is to use a fine steel wool. However, when you use this method you have to use a lot of elbow grease and you still end up with a slightly dull surface with some amount of scratching not to mention the messy 'dust' left over from the steel wool. That's because you are physically scraping off the rust. When you use the aluminum foil method you are dissolving the rust chemically so you don't need to rub nearly as
hard and since the aluminum foil is softer than the chrome, you are left with few if any scratches. This method also allows you to get the rust out of some minor pitting without having to dig into the surface. The aluminum oxide that is created by friction when you rub the surface of the chrome leeches the rust away and when combined with the water you added creates it's own polishing compound so you end up with a clean, smooth, shiny surface.

Hi everyone, hope you are all fit and well. I apologise for not having a report in the last few magazines, but I had some health issues that had to be sorted out, that kept me from riding and collecting information. My wife Yvonne has had problems as well which didn’t encourage me to just go riding off.
The good news is that we are both pretty healthy again. When the national committee was brought to Newcastle in 1999, I was appointed national rep coordinater and then Newcastle rep, so that has been fourteen years that I have been doing this job. I have bought this matter to attention our members who have attended the monthly meetings over the last couple years, and asked someone to take over the position of the Lower Hunter area rep. But to no avail, so I am informing the National Committee that I will not be the Lower Hunter area rep after this year. I think that I have well and truly done my bit for this club. I fully intend to keep riding, attending the meetings and any events, but not being the rep. It’s good to see that the membership of the club is growing, and that is reflected in the Hunter, at our September meeting we had at Club Macquarie we had fourteen members turn up this was a good number, which may not seem a lot to other areas, but we have never had more than eight to ten so fourteen was a good number. I know that there are about fifty to sixty members out there so why not get along to the Macquarie Club at Cockle Creek on the second Thursday night at 7.30 to talk motorcycles or anything else.
www.vjmc.org.au
At the beginning of 2013 we changed our marshalling point from McDonalds Edgeworth to the coffee shop at Speers Point Park, this seems to have gone down well with everyone. I haven’t heard any complaints, so this year’s arrangement looks set to continue. On the 29th September eight of us rode to Stroud for a sausage sizzle, Alan Green, Terry Cook, Jeff Goodchild, Lyndon Adams, Phil Kendringham, Jeff Lockhart, myself and a new member Ron Morrison. My son Mark and my Grandson Michael rode part of the way. Ron told me that he rode regularly when he was younger but let his licence lapse. He recently got his licence back and will be on P plates for a few more months, but he is on the road again and that’s what matters. We do have some interesting events coming up before Christmas, some will more than likely be over before you get your next magazine. The main one will be our Christmas Party at Marmong Point Sailing Club on the 8th of December, so please get along, but let Lyndon Adams know for catering. I would like on behalf of Yvonne and myself to wish everyone, A Very Merry Christmas and a Safe Healthy 2014. Until next time stay safe. Vince

Good Aye From W.A Well we have just arranged our first VJMC get together for Sunday the 17 th Nov for our W.A members.
I have had a good response so hopefully we will have nice warm weather for the ride. Our destination is going to finish at Barbagallo raceway for the Shannons Australian Historic Road race Championships. I have managed to do a deal for VJMC members. It will only be a fairly short ride but at least it will be a start and we can see what our members would like to arrange in the future. After all we have to start somewhere. Last weekend we had the Perth motorcycle and Scooter show at the Claremont show grounds. We had a huge number of people attend and there was a great variety of Motorcycles on display as well as stunt riders MX shows and a Charity ride on the Saturday morning hosted by Mick Doohan which was a great success. They also had a Show and Shine that was well received. I was fortunate enough to take out Best Vintage Motorcycle with the old CBX. The standard of entries were very high and its was great to see the interest in the older Japanese Motorcycle. Anyway until next time I wish you all a Safe and Merry Christmas to you all. Norm Larkin

Xmas ride ‘n’ Lunch The annual, not to be missed, SA Xmas ride/lunch event was held on Sunday 1st December.
Arriving at the BP Morphett Vale, to be met with the not totally unexpected jeering and ridicule about Honda reliability (I had to take the ute due to some, er, rare Honda technical issues), the gathered crowd was ready to head off to Mick Bulman’s place for morning tea and to check out his impressive collection and projects. The roads were a little wet so the pace was steady. Mick and Jane had provided some fresh sticky buns and hot coffee and cool drinks for the 18 who arrived – many many thanks guys for your hospitality and generosity, we really do appreciate it. Mick’s shed never fails to impress...including the latest acquisition, the little know “Pointer”...no, I had never heard of them either, one of those smaller Jap companies that were around in the early 60s, but not sold here (as far as we know). Interesting stuff. We then set off for the Stanley Bridge Hotel at Verdun, via the Mick Bulman scenic route, again a bit wet and slippery, but happily all made it safely. We had a record crowd of 39 booked for lunch – thank you to everybody that came along and helped make the day such a great success – it was great to see partners and family and friends along as well. The 3 course lunch was well received, a bargain at $30 (after the $5 subsidy provided by the SA region of the club) and all seemed to have a good time, evidenced by the last of us leaving the pub well after 3pm. Again, special thanks to Mick and Jane and to everybody for making the effort to be there – a great day. Peter Hunt

Area rep coordinator report Well, the club just continues to grow...where will it end? We have more members who have stepped forward to look after a region as an Area Rep – this time it’s Jeff Lockhart who will be looking after the NSW Central Coast - thank you Jeff and good luck with the region. And also Peter Ezzy has put his hand up to kick off a region for Orange, NSW – thank you Peter!
I’m sure with their enthusiasm and great ideas they will get things moving and give the local members some activities to attend and a point of communication. If you live in these regions then why not contact these new guys and show your support – details in the back of the mag. Other areas are moving along nicely, although some quieter than others, and all the Area Reps have been sent 2014 Rally entry forms and posters to distribute amongst their local members – if you haven’t received yours then contact your Rep. Get those posters up in your local businesses and promote the rally as best you can. If you’re not seeing much activity in your region, then contact your Rep listed in the back of the magazine and ask the question, or contact me and I’ll follow it up for you.....one of the benefits of being in the club is being able to mix with like-minded VJM nuts, swap stories, tips and lies, and ride with mates and have a bevvie or two. This is made much easier to achieve if the local Rep is coordinating and setting up rides and events to bring everyone together......you too can help make this happen by being pro-active. Give him/her a call! Have a great and safe Christmas – hope to see you at the 2014 Rally. Peter Hunt

2014 national rally Elsewhere in this issue you will find the entry forms for the 2014 Rally to be held in Victor Harbor, SA, March 14th to 16th.
Please lodge your entries as early as possible – we have a lot of work to do in the days leading up to the Rally, and with most of us also trying to maintain our day jobs, it makes it just that bit easier if we’re not swamped with entries in the last 2 or 3 weeks. You will also need to consider getting your accommodation booked sooner rather than later....all reports indicate that the rally is going to attract huge numbers again, so cabins and rooms will be at a premium – book now to avoid disappointment!! Let’s hope we can break through the 200 entries barrier – last rally was 187 with 211 bikes, a great turnout, but we can do better!! Tell your friends – they
don’t have to be a member to enter, everyone is welcome...bring the family and make a holiday out of it – lots to see and do in the region and we’re only 80km from Adelaide. If you have any queries about where to stay, or what format the rally is taking, or how to go about entering then please contact me direct and I will try to help you out. A lot of the info is included in the entry forms, so look there first, but I’m always happy to answer your questions and help where I can. Entry forms can also be found on our website. So see you in March!! As they say in the classics, be there or be square... Peter Hunt
SA Region Report Preparations for the 2014 Rally in Victor Harbor are progressing at a feverish pace – but to the folks in Canberra, be assured that it does get a little easier second time around!
We’re expecting big crowds again, with excellent sponsorships and support from businesses, new rides, new dinner venue and I’ve been assured we won’t be hit by Cyclone Victor again.... The monthly dinner at the Tonsley Hotel (6.30pm, last Thurs of the month) continues to be a popular night, where we sit around and chat about bikes,

work, life and love...well, maybe not love, but the food and company is good, so if you haven’t been to one of these nights yet, try and make the effort. Unfortunately, the ride planned for Oct 13th had to be deferred to another time due to some particularly poor weather we were experiencing – the ride led by Nev Gray was to take in some of the fantastic lesser known twisty roads of the Adelaide Hills, so it was considered a bit risky in the conditions – this will be rescheduled soon. Melbourne VJMC member Phil Moden kicked off his love affair with classic Japanese bikes with a Kawasaki Avenger, and still has a 1976 Honda 550/4 Supersport which he bought as a demo model. Here's a little more about Phil's bikes ... My first bike - is a 1968 Kawasaki 350cc Avenger  Street Scramblerpurchased for $400 in 1973 and sadly sold for $150 in 1975. My second bike was a 1975 Suzuki 250cc trail-bike TS250 Savage purchased for $799 new and sold in 1976 for $500. My third bike and still current is a 1976 Honda 550/4 Supersport - purchased as a demo model with 800km on clock for $1000. It was relegated to under the house when children came along in 1989 and resurrected in 2005, when it was stripped and repainted, new spokes, muffler, re-chromed etc - is on Club Plates with VJMC. I upgraded in 2011 to a 2009 Suzuki VStrom 650 ABS with panniers, topbox, bushbusters, bashplate etc for $7000 with 32000kms on clock. I did the "Long Ride" in May, a charity ride for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. We travelled to Cairns via Hay, Bourke ,Charleville, Barcaldine, Hughenden, Townsville, Atherton, Port Douglas - 3500kms. I then rode across to Alice Springs to meet a mate via Mt Isa and Tennant Creek. I did the East and West McDonnell Ranges, Uluru, Olgas, Kings Canyon and then headed south to Coober Pedy, Port Augusta, Broken Hill, Mildura and back home to Moonee Ponds in Melbourne - a total of 9876 kms. A few people said I should have ridden around the block a few times to clock up the 10,000!

Words John McNair
I recently came across some of my old VJMC club magazines and had quite a good time looking back at some of the happenings from the 80’s. In one of them, September 1986, I found an article titled “Top Bikes”.
Honda cb72
It read as follows; Going through the lists of members recently, I was intrigued to find out just what machines made it to the top ten in the Register. A quick bit of counting gave me the answer; 1; Honda CB72 - 52 examples 2; Honda C&!/C72 and C76/C77 - 38 examples 3; Honda C92 and C95 - 29 examples 4; Kawasaki Mach 3 - 22 examples 5; Kawasaki ‘W’ twin - 20 examples 6; Honda CB77, Yamaha YDS1/ 2/ 3/ 5, Suzuki T20 - 18 examples each 7; Honda CB750 - 16 examples 8: Kawasaki Mach 4 - 14 examples 9; Yamaha TD1/ 2/ 3 - 13 examples 10; Suzuki TR250/500 - 11 examples

kawasaki mach3
Just outside the top ten came Hondas CB92 (9), CP/CL 72/77 (7), CB & CL450 (8), Kawasaki Z900 (8), Kawasaki A1/A7 (6), Yamaha XS1/ 2 (7), Yamaha TR2/ 3 (9), Suzuki T500 (9), Suzuki GT750 (9), Suzuki X6/ 7 (9). Of the machines not made by the big four, Lilacs numbered 8 as did Rabbit, Bridgestones numbered 9 and there were five Tohatsus. There were surprisingly few trail bikes listed, only two Yamaha DT1’s from a huge number of eligible bikes.
I also found a report on a ride that former NSW member Rod Forester (his red Honda CL77 is in the Nabiac museum) and myself organized back when I lived in Sydney on the 2nd of February 1986 to Parramatta Lakes for a barbeque. In attendance were 2 Honda CB72s, Honda CB750, a Kawasaki, Honda CL100, Yamaha R3, Honda CB250N, Yamaha R2, Yamaha RD350, Bridgestone 100, Yamaha YDS3, and a Honda C92. Hmmm! Very interesting reading.
And who was it that put this article together back in September 1986? Our very own Mick Godfrey.

Entries are now open for the 2014 National Rally, once again being held in the beautiful coastal location of Victor Harbor, Sth Aust. The rally will be held from Friday 14th March to Sunday 16th, and as was the case in ’13, the Rally Hub is the excellent Beachfront Holiday Park Should the Hub fill up (bookings are strong) then you can book at a number of other places nearby.

We suggest you get your entries in sooner rather than later, certainly by Feb 21st (but don’t leave it until the last minute, it gets a bit hectic!) and make sure you secure some accommodation – Victor Harbor is a very busy place at this time of year. Rally details, registration forms and poster can be found elsewhere in this issue, or on the Club website. See you in March!!

Photos Marcus Boadle At first the idea that four busy and employed mates in their late 20s, two in Australia and two in Los Angeles, could pull together a motorcycle adventure down the West Coast of America seemed like a pipe dream.
In fact, the idea remained fanciful to all right up until the moment we saddled up on our trusty steeds as one in Portland, Oregan. Did I say this was the first dose of adventure touring anyone of us had done and the first time one of us had even ridden a motorcycle? The adventure took place in what we now call ‘West America’, over two weeks in the Fall of 2013. It was a quest 2,800 kilometres long that would hopefully be the first of many to come for our gang. We were prepared and organised but this can only take you so far when you have four unproven bikes, four novice late 20 adventurers and just an idea. Regardless, we took a giant leap of faith and built our wings on the way down. What could have turned out in a number of ways turned out just as we hoped. It was the most incredible motorcycle adventure we all could have imagined, across some incredible countryside and coast line. The following is a recap of where we went and what we did. We would be more than happy to help anyone who is planning on doing a similar thing. It was the trip of a lifetime.

Diary of the trip 22nd June - Marcus (lives in Melbourne) pulls the trigger and buys his bike from San Diego. A 1984 Honda XL350R for $2,300 USD. Chris his brother (lives in LA) picks it up for him. 10th July - Rick who lives in LA buys his bike, A 1985 Honda XL600R for $1,200 USD. 27th July - Two bikes down, two to go. Rhys buys his bike today, another 1985 Honda XL600R for $1,500 USD. Rhys lives in Melbourne so Rick does the dirty work for him. 28th July - Drew completes the bike purchasing, buying a 1985 Yamaha XT600 Tenere for $3,000 USD. Only catch is that it is from the UK. Drew begins the mad rush getting it air freighted. Fingers are all crossed it arrives in time. 29th July - With under two months to go, two bikes get their first run down the river ducts of downtown LA. It was a day of firsts, first rides and first crashes for both riders, Rick and Marcus’ brother Chris. Luckily no one was harmed; just ego’s being appropriately beaten into shape.

Repairing Drew’s Muffler which had just fallen off. Highway 1. Oregon.
3rd August - Chris takes Rhys’ bike and Rick takes his for another test run to an OHV park north of LA. Unfortunately, another ride, another crash by Rick. Everyone is feeling a little bit uneasy about making the distance of the West Coast in a month’s time given our preparation - Three Honda’s with 100km’s collective of test time and one Yamaha, still 23,000 feet in the air. 5th August - Pannier Racks are ordered. Under one month to go and plans are falling into place. Trip checklist complete. 26th August - Drew’s bike arrives. 28th August - Rhys Lands in LA at 10:30am. Rick and Rhys work all day and all night finishing at 4:00am getting their two bikes ready. 29th August - Marcus Lands in LA at 9:30am. The three hire a U-Haul, load the four bikes and start the trip north on the highway 5. We leave LA in the evening so don’t even make it to Sacremento on the first leg.

30th August - Early start as we aim for Warrenton today. This is a small town 1.5 hours north west of Portland. A friend from Melbourne is living there. We arrive at 2:30am. Two days into the trip, already exhausted without a kickstart kicked. 31st August - We pick up the 4th musketeer from Portland Airport and the journey begins. Destination 1 is Troutdale. A short ride from the U-Haul depot to see a favourite band play. We stay in a hotel. 1st September - Early on in our trip our bearings are determined by our friend who lives in Oregon. We ride to Bend to go camping. Marcus’ kick start recoil breaks, not the start he was hoping for, then Rhys crashes into Marcus causing minor frame damage, again not the start he was hoping for. We complete a scenic ride through our first Oregon forest, which turns into desert. We camp that night at Sparks Lake, a great destination.

2nd September - Today was a down day in Bend filled with river floats, lunch and a viewing of the epic movie from 1971, ‘Cycles South,’ as something to get us in the mood. The house we are staying at has a fully decked garage making the perfect opportunity for minor repairs and servicing. 3rd September - We leave for Crater Lake early in the morning. We take a few dirt roads that run along the Deschutes River and trough some pine plantations. The feeling of getting off the beaten track is coming hard and fast at last. We experience our first close call with Drew coming off the road at 45 Miles an hour whilst talking a photo. Lesson One learnt. We arrive and camp at Crater Lake, one of the most incredible places we have ever seen. Sitting at 7,079 feet it is truly breathtaking. A cold night camping. 4th September - Despite the Ranger busting us camping illegally and having to reinforce Drew’s sagging pannier rack with some ski poles, the morning goes off without a hitch. After a swim in the lake itself, we begin our trek west to the coast finding a small yet breathtaking campsite a few hours from Crater Lake called Clearwater Falls. An early night. 5th September - Today was a great day riding. On recommendation we rode along the Umqua river which took us to some mountain ranges before the coast. Then as the rain started to fall we took some dirt roads over the range and down to the Oregon coast. The feeling of getting miles under the belt is a good one. After a big day of successful riding we find a hotel with a hot tub and cold beer.

6th September - A nice change of scenery was in store as we begin riding south along the coast. After stopping for a cup of coffee we get advice from a Queensland couple to ride a small dirt track where a scene from Star Wars was filmed, it was near Stout Creek. This was an incredible ride amongst the Redwoods and well worth the detour. We continue down the coast through some more redwood forests and find a campsite after several failed attempts. Moral is low as we didn’t get to where we wanted, California. 7th September - Our bikes fall apart today. Marcus’ baffle blows out which is shortly followed by Drew’s entire exhaust falling off. After some running repairs we take Bear River Ridge Road over to the Lost Coast in California. A brilliant ride. In the afternoon we face perhaps our toughest ride yet as we wind our way to our campsite on some difficult, tight dirt roads. Drew drops his bike 3 times. We make it to camp, not the one we want, however at least we had cold beer. 8th September - Today was a day of mileage coverage as yesterday let us down. We aim for San Francisco via the Highway 1. A scenic and enjoyable road. The team is happy as we finally made it to a destination we set our sights on. 9th September - Today was our second down day. Drew gets his rack welded correctly.

10th September - We take the Highway 1 again to Big Sur National Park. Great scenery. Given it is our last night on the road we seek out a winding dirt track and a campsite with a view. A brilliant days riding and a brilliant sunset in Big Sur National Park overlooking the Pacific Ocean. 11th September - All good things must come to an end. We pack up and aim for LA today. It ends up being a massive day of covering miles and we arrive at our destination at 9:00pm to a welcome party. Job done. Taking a break after riding through the rain. Oregon.

Victorian member Graeme Dusting and his mate Martin Ewart have been mates since the late 60s. They both fell for Honda mini bikes way back when, and now have a large collection of them including a full set of the “Fun Wheels” range restored. Here’s a little history lesson from Martin on the revolutionary Fun Wheels range.

Honda Fun Wheels
I care? I had just mastered the 3 speed centrifugal clutch of my Honda CT70 Dax mini-bike. Growing up is hard to do in any generation, but purpose makes the journey less difficult … and riding mini-bikes was my immediate destiny. Toys are toys but powered vehicles give an 11 year old a great respect for engineering. Brooks’ paddock was one of the thousands dotted around the outskirts of high energy Australian cities growing with unstoppable energy in the late 1960’s. Its ten acre semi urban motorcycle fields became not only the sacred ground of local youth culture, but a showcase for the new middle-class living standards that were the highest in the world. The arrival of the range of Honda “Fun Wheels” tapped into this market brilliantly. Freedom in all its manifestations was peaking around the world in the 60s and motorcycling was high on the list of legal pursuits that could get you there… these tiny, cute, well designed bikes were just begging to be ridden by kids and parents alike. They led the charge that would leave the European and
www.vjmc.org.au
American motorcycle industries choking in the dust for the next 30 years. And arrive these machines did! Australian parents, with more money than ever before, bought these freedom machines by the thousands. The new Japanese motorcycles, through brilliant engineering, not only delivered what they promised, but delivered more. They would change people’s attitudes to product Vs. cultural loyalty forever. Anthropologists of this period of industrial change identify memorabilia like the Honda “Fun Wheels” range as one of the first outstanding examples of Japanese engineering, design and long term marketing. These icons of the motorcycle fraternity deserve to be remembered. To say that an SL70 changed my life may seem a bit dramatic. Then again, can you think of anything better than strapping on the AGV at the beginning of a hot summer’s weekend? Desert boots laced up tight. Eighty four cents in your pocket for two full tanks of petrol. Setting off with a puff of dust, the rear “Trail Wing” biting into the track. The sole purpose to ride just that little bit better than the day before. Reliability was guaranteed and the only commitment in our free-wheeling lives was to turn up to school by 9.00am the next Monday. These memories will ride with me into the sunset.
