PRESIDENTS REPORT

In late July 2021 Cheryl and I travelled up to Mackay before coming back to Rockhampton, Yeppoon and 1770 before turning inland through to the northern Burnett region and on to the Darling Downs. One of the highlights of this trip was catching up with Peter & Helen Douglas in Mackay. Peter is the area rep for the region and our host for the visit. Along with seeing many of the beautiful attractions in the area we got to attend a BBQ Ride with the Mackay group to Cape Hillsborough about 45 minutes north of the city. About twenty people attended the ride and soon the BBQ was fired up in a beautiful park adjoining the beach. It was a great day and we both enjoyed meeting so many of the Mackay members. Top people. Thank you all again for your hospitality. Another arm of our big VJMC family. For many years now we have struggled to get members in Tasmania however since Tony our National Secretary moved to Tassie from Victoria he has done some great work down there and our numbers are rapidly growing in the Apple Isle. I would like to welcome all our new members in Tassie and thank our new area reps down there. Well done to our new area reps Malcolm Innes-Wayling in Northern Tasmania and Barry Fitzgerald in Southern Tasmania. Along with Tony in the North Western area we now have Tassie covered and look forward to good things happening down there.

With borders having been closed long periods and various covid restrictions resulting in the postponement of the 2021 VJMC National Rally in Bendigo last October meant disappointment to those who had arranged holidays for the Rally. With this in mind discussions were held with Peter Douglas in Mackay and Phil Heggie, Brian Gainsford and myself on putting together a weekend get together for the Queensland members. With the success of the Biggenden Bash earlier in the year we investigated the possibility of meeting in Monto about 500klms north west of Brisbane and about 580klms south west of Mackay. Interest in the event grew and soon we had over 40 bikes and sixty six people logging there intended attendance in with Phil who was elected to be the coordinator for the Monto Muster. The available accommodation in Monto handled the numbers well with Albert Hotel easily catering for us in their huge outdoor covered area. Members attended from the Gold Coast to Mackay and various places in between. Cheryl and I would like to send all our members our best wishes for 2022 and I would also like to pass on the good wishes from the National Committee members too. Ride safe. John McNair

Interest in the event on the 15th to 17th October 2021 was high with members attending from the Gold Coast to Mackay and many places in between. Some attended from Toowoomba also. The Albert Hotel was the main location for accommodation and meals. Monto Caravan Park, the two Hotels and two motels easily accommodated the visitors. The Saturday morning bike display being held in front of the Albert Hotel in the huge centre parking area of the main street. The bike display featured around forty bikes and attracted a lot of interest including one local fellow Peter Williams who came down on his immaculate 1952 BSA Bantam. A people’s choice award was given out with attending members and also local residents invited to vote. This was won by Ashley & Lynn Taylor from Mackay with their immaculate Kawasaki Z900. Ashley received a $100 fuel voucher which was donated by the VJMC Australia.

for lunch before the next ride. The afternoon ride took us in an easterly direction to Kalpower, following the old Monto to Gladstone railway line which is now unused. This ride was also quite a scenic ride of about 40klms each way. Kalpower was once a bustling little town catering for the timber industry and the railway but now is almost a ghost town. I believe you can buy a block of land there for $5,000. The return ride included a stop off at the Mungungo Pub. This amazing old pub features lots of motorcycle memorabilia around the walls including an actual old AJS motorcycle on top of the drinks fridge. Dinner each night was at the Albert Hotel at the top of Monto’s main street. Their huge function area easily catered for the 66 people attending on the Saturday night. The pub has great meals at reasonable prices. A motorcycle trivia night

Following the bike display riders gathered for a 40km ride to Cania Dam. This was quite a spectacular ride with the route travelling through Cania Gorge with towering cliff faces lining the valley. The group had a stop at the dam for photos before heading up to the lookout with Phil launching his drone for some good photos. The ride then headed back to Monto

kept the diners entertained along with several lucky door prizes being awarded. These prizes included a $500.00 voucher from Precision Powder Coating in Yatala, a voucher for a new tyre from North Side Motorcycles in Mackay and various prizes from Bullet Motorcycles in Mackay and Mackay Kawasaki, Team Moto Kawasaki in Maroochydore and Northside Motorcycle Tyres and Service in Lawnton. A huge thank you to these businesses for their support. On the Sunday morning riders gathered at the Puma Garage in Monto for 135klm ride south east to Mount Perry. This ride took riders south almost to Eidsvold before turning off to Mount Perry. This road was made for motorcycles with plenty of hills, valleys and corners before descending into the beautiful town of Mount Perry. This town

8

VINTAGE JAPANESE MOTORCYCLE CLUB

is well known for its axemen and hosts a huge annual wood chopping event attracting visitors from all over the state and beyond. The town with a population of just under 600 was also the end of the Bundaberg to Mount Perry railway line which carried passengers and copper from the local copper smelter before it closed about fifty years ago. A short ride to the east of Mount Perry will take you to the Boolboonda Railway tunnel which is the longest unsupported tunnel in Australia. Constructed in 1893 it can still be ridden or driven through. Before lunch the riders took part in a ride to an awesome lookout just a few kilometres out of Mount Perry to enjoy the views over the town and valley. It was also a good spot for a group photo. After lunch some of the riders set off for home while others returned to Monto. This road from Eidsvold through Mount Perry to Gin Gin is a fantastic motorcycle road as those who continued on towards home after lunch found out. A “Stragglers Dinner” was held at the Albert Hotel again on the Sunday night for those still in town before returning home on Monday. A big thank you to the organizers, sponsors and also the people of Monto for their friendly welcome.

VJMC AUS QR CODE

MOST OF US ONLY SAW QR (QUICK RESPONSE) CODES ON REAL ESTATE ADVERTISING PRIOR TO COVID-19. THEN AS THE PANDEMIC QR CODES WERE USED TO CHECK IN AT CAFES, SHOPS AND EVEN PUBLIC TOILETS. THEY ARE CURRENTLY PART OF OUR DAILY LIVES.

What is a QR Code? A QR Code is similar to a bar code used on retail items. However, as well as data (eg. part number and price), a QR Code contains an instruction on how to use the data. For example, in the case of a COVID-19 Check-in app (application software), the QR Code starts the Check-in app and sends the date, time and location with your identity to a government site. What will the VJMC QR Code do? Scanning the VJMC QR Code will tell a smart phone to open our club website www.vjmc.org.au in the internet browser already installed on the device. That’s it. For potential members, it means direct access to information on membership, history, club rego, Area Reps, other club contacts, merchandise, local meetings, events, National Rallies and links to VJMC social media pages. How can the VJMC Australia use this QR Code? Some suggestions are to include it: a) in our advertising in Old Bike and other publications

www.vjmc.org.au

b) on our pull up and cloth banners c) on our business cards and fliers d) on National Rally advertising, promotional articles and fliers e) on the Contacts page of our club magazine. What does the QR Code mean to existing members? Not much other than to know your club is using another tool to promote itself to potential members. Why did the VJMC Australia go for this QR Code? Best practice recommendations are to (i) keep the information in the QR Code short and simple and (ii) have just one for the organisation (ie. having one for membership, another for merchandise, etc would be confusing). It would be reasonable to have another QR Code for National Rally information and that could be investigated. So that’s it in a nutshell. Now you know what it is and what it does. There is no ulterior motive. Feel free to give it a try.

THREE GENERATIONS

THIS YEAR VINCE FOREMAN A LIFE MEMBER OF THE VJMC GOT TO TAKE A CLUB RIDE WITH TWO FOLLOWING GENER ATIONS, HIS SON, MARK & GR ANDSON MICHAEL TO KULNUR A, NSW.

Vince & his wife Yvonne joined VJMC back in 1988 with a Kawasaki KH 500CC triple which Vince still owns and rides today. Vince attended the first Rally held at the Caroltel in Canberra that year. Keeping it in the family Mark joined in the mid 90s with his H2 Kawasaki Triple, 1972. Michael then joined in 2020 with his WR450 F Yamaha. Yvonne and Vince along with some other locals took over the National committee here in the Newcastle area in 1999 and held these roles for 10 years until 2009.

10

Soon to follow the ranks was Marks youngest child Rebecca joining the club and attending and riding pillion with Mark in the 2019 Rally on the Gold Coast. Their photo was used in the VJMC promotional 2020 poster. Marks’s wife, Maria joined a few years back and recently Marks eldest son, Joshua also joined. They now only have two left to join, Dom and her wife Emma. Emma has been keen to own a bike & ride for a while now so watch this space.

GET A GRIP BUDDY

“GET A PROPER GR IP ON YOU R SE L F BU DDY !” Story by Rob Carmichael

I KNOW THE TITLE OF THIS PIECE SOUNDS LIKE A LINE DELIVERED BY JIMMY CAGNEY IN A 1940’S AMERICAN GANGSTER MOVIE, BUT IT CAPTURES WHAT I WANT TO SAY ABOUT AN AMERICAN PRODUCT, “GRIP BUDDIES”. These are soft-textured motorcycle hand grips that wrap around your OEM grips. The question is whether a friction type throttle lock like OmniCruise (henceforth ‘O-C’, if you are not familiar with how an O-C mounts on the twist-grip see the photo on page 13) will be able to get a proper grip on the softer spongier surface of these types of grips.

A Grip Buddy being wrapped around the OEM Grip.

for keeping me riding as Parkinson’s disease had affected my ability to hold the throttle open in a fixed position. The O-C worked as intended and solved my touring problem because the O-C is mounted on a special silicone band that allows it to both grip when required and to slip when you roll off the throttle. But would the O-C work on the soft-cushy surface of a throttle grip with an extra 3 to 4 mm of foam rubber?

A Grip Buddy, note textured neoprene surface and Velcro strip.

Back in 2018 I wrote a letter to the Editor of Old Bike Australasia praising the O-C throttle lock

www.vjmc.org.au

I ride a Honda single cylinder GB500TT (with a balance shaft), There is still some engine vibration between 80 to 100 kph, but above 100kph the engine becomes remarkably smooth, except for a high frequency tingling sensation in my hands which is typical of Parkinson’s. This is why I wanted to test what system works best with the O-C.

VINTAGE JAPANESE MOTORCYCLE CLUB

GET A GRIP BUDDY

Grip Puppies V Grip Buddies A suggested solution to the tingling problem was to install either an English product, ‘Grip Puppies’, OR import a product from the USA, ‘Grip Buddies’, the defining feature of both products is that they go over the existing OEM grips, not replace them. Though similar, there are also some distinct differences between them, the most obvious being fixture of the grips onto the handlebars. Puppies are tubes that are pulled over the existing grips and have a layer of foam rubber on the outside of a layer of smooth rubber, giving a total depth about 4 mm; while Buddies are wrapped around the existing grips, and secured by means of glue and Velcro. They have a layer of “SmartskinTM” textured neoprene on the outside of foam rubber making a total depth of about 3 mm. I decided to buy both products: Puppies prices vary considerably: cheap Puppy clones on eBay for about $10 AUD plus postage; to full price genuine articles at a typical Australian price of about $35 AUD plus postage. Buddies list price is $24 USD which is about $37 AUD, but freight from the US is more expensive and US Postal Service had just stopped making 1st class mail deliveries to Australia except for Priority Mail costing $67 USD (about $100 AUD) (Original Grip Buddies subsequently advised that they had restored reliable postal service to Australia and New Zealand at competitive rates by a change of postal service provider). Luckily a friend was in the US and she was able to bring them home with her. Coming to grips with a Throttle Lock The objective here is to determine if my O-C would work effectively with these grips. So this is not so much a review of these two grips against each other, but rather it is an examination of how well the O-C works when this type of grip is fitted. The best way to mount an O-C (or for that matter, any friction type throttle lock) is not covered in the

12

VINTAGE JAPANESE MOTORCYCLE CLUB

installation instructions or in the online FAQs for either product, but for either brand there are three fitment options: Option 1: Mount the throttle lock to bear directly onto the softer surface of the new foam rubber grip. This is what founder of O-C, Brian Carmichael, said about this option: “I used the first iteration of the Omni on. I just clamped right on the foam. It smashes the foam down and burnishes it with use and worked OK, but did seem to slip more than on the rubber.” But the surface material of Grip Buddies is neoprene which is much more durable than foam rubber, more like the consistency as the O-C silicone band. Option 2: Take the silicone band that was used with the old throttle grip and put it in place over the foam rubber grip in the same location as on the QEM grips. This means that the O-C will be in contact with the silicone band like before, but the grip plus the band will be of greater diameter than before and optimum screw-down pressure will need to be recalibrated. Brian Carmichael said “Once I got the bands made I threw that on the foam and it worked even better.” I noted that some contributors acknowledged that it worked, but increased pressure was required to stop slippage, which in turn makes rolling the throttle off more difficult. Option 3: Trim about a centimetre off the width of the new throttle grip to expose the silicone band on the OEM grip underneath. The photo on the next page shows Option 3. Note that approximately one centimetre of the Grip Buddy has been trimmed from the inside edge, exposing the silicon band underneath. Note that the O-C is clamped directly onto the silicone band, not through the Smartskin and foam rubber Grip Buddy. This means that the O-C throttle lock will work exactly as it was designed

www.vjmc.org.au

GET A GRIP BUDDY

to work and will hold a given speed better than the other options and rolling off the throttle will be easier too. There was no comment from O-C on this option but the founder of Original Grip Buddies said: “As to the O-C, we regularly sell to folks who use these. All that is required is for us to trim off ½“off the grip destined for the throttle side of your handlebars.” But he later said: “My overreaching purpose is to provide you with alternatives. If I trim the RH grip back ½”, it’s no big deal for me. However, what if using the Omni Cruise over my neoprene would work out? You’d never know that, unless you tried.” I tried all three options on the Grip Buddies and the results are reported below.

is Option 1 and the best performing is Option 3. But for Grip Buddies, because of the thinner neoprene Smartskin surface there is less variation across the three mounting options. I ended up going for Option 3 as the O-C rides on the silicone band, so O-C performance is identical to that recommended. Mounting the O-C directly on the neoprene came close but I was concerned that the O-C clamp could do damage to the Velcro fixing seam and over time this could possibly cause both performance and safety problems. So, if you are on a tight budget, don’t own an O-C you could save money and give a Grip Puppies clone a try. But if you have an O-C and money is not an issue, use Option 3 on either original Grip Buddies or genuine Grip Puppies. But I preferred the Buddies for the following reasons: • Buddies Smartskin surfaced grips feel more comfortable; • Buddies ‘Lites’ are 1 mm thinner so they suit the size of my hand better; • The neoprene surface on the Buddies is more durable and it is also waterproof; • Fitting Buddies is easier and they can be easily transferred from bike to bike. So, to get a proper Grip on yourself, go to: www.originalbeemerbuddies.com

And now, for the gripping conclusion The Omni-Cruise throttle lock can be made to work with both products using all three mounting options, but a general finding is that the softer and thicker the grip surface material is, the more likely it is that the throttle lock will slip and not hold speed, which requires an increase in pressure on the adjusting screw to hold, which then makes it more difficult to roll the throttle off. For Grip Puppies and clones, the worst performing option

Having owned a 750 Katana back in ’84 and always regretting selling it, I dipped the riding boot back into the water a few years ago with another 1982 750SZ. Was a good barn find and only gave the old girl a cosmetic make-over and some minor mechanical servicing ( full chassis bearing, new clutch plates, tyres and brake rebuilds ). These iconic pieces of motorcycling history always look good and still turn heads and generate debate. Whilst I love the 750 I always was on the lookout for an 1100 and like so many others I jumped in with both boots with the “BasketCase”. This was going to be a full bolts up rebuild including the engine, transmission and frame / cosmetics right in the middle of 2020, guessing I would have lots of time to get the work done before the 40th Anniversary in 2021.

This decision became a very much Glass if both half full and half empty as my expected excess free time was whittled away by my work in the healthcare industry becoming super busy and so many hospital projects steamrolling ahead, but fortunately this also provided the significant funds required for such a venture. The list of new parts is too numerous to put on paper, with it being easier to state what is retained and either repaired or rebuilt. That being the wheels (powder coated black by the previous owner), the frame (requiring straightening and paint),

16

Swingarm vapour blasted and polished, the engine main cases/barrels & head, the front forks (re-chromed and fully re-built). All work on the bike has been done personally except for frame straightening/ blasting/ painting, cylinder re-boring, head valve re-seating. What I had hope would be achieved in 6 months, inevitably took 12, for which in retrospect I’m glad for. The result I am very happy with, and hope it passes muster and scrutiny. Now just for lockdowns to end so can get some decent K’s behind us!

RD REBORN

Article by Peter Sellen

MY STORY STARTS IN 1967..WHEN I PURCHASED A YAMAHA YDS 5E 250. I WAS IN THE NAVY AT THE TIME AND SPENT MANY RELIABLE MILES INCLUDING A TRIP OR TWO FROM MELBOURNE TO ADELAIDE.

RD REBORN

Eventually I traded the bike for a car..much more practical for me at the time. After leaving the navy in 1973, I later applied for a job with the Bougainville copper mine in the Solomon islands. In 1975 and in need of transport, I bought an low k Yamaha RD 350 from a bloke who was returning to Australia, for the princely sum of $900.00. After a year on the island I shipped the bike home to Adelaide. After three months in transit it arrived and started with just one kick.Amazing!

www.vjmc.org.au

A growing family reluctantly saw the bike sold for four wheels in 1978 for what I had paid for it three years ago with just 22000 kilometres. After retiring a few years ago I thought it might be time to see if there were any 1974 RDs still around. I found one in need of restoration, and after 18 months it was meticulously made like new by Adelaide bike builder and racer Owen Mittel, right down to the hard to find rear carrier. At 69, I don’t ride it all that often, but I’m hoping one day it might be a good investment of sorts.

BUMBLE BEE KATANA

Article by Michael Whitey

I PURCHASED A BOX OF PARTS AND PANELS AND A FRAME A FEW YEARS AGO FOR A 750 KATANA AND DECIDED TO TRY AND TURN IT INTO SOMETHING NICE FOR OUR UP AND COMING NATIONAL RALLY IN DUBBO, TO CELEBRATE 40 YEARS OF THE KATANA.

BUMBLE BEE KATANA

Well, Covid killed that plan, so we decided to do a state by state rally instead. We in South Australia held it on the banks of the River Murray in a town called Mannum, about an hour from Adelaide. Its a beautiful little country town. I had the frame stripped and powder coated to kick start my enthusiasm toward a new project. I pulled the engine down to see what I had. As soon as the head was removed I could see pistons had been hitting the head. So luckily I had a couple spare engines. Second engine looked promising till the barrel came off and the pistons and bores were badly worn. Third one wasn’t too bad so continued to strip it down. Everything checked out fine in the bottom end. So freshened the top end up as best I could since valves and seats were pitted and useless.

I grabbed best parts from all 3 engines and put it back together with new stem seals and a valve and seat grind. Set up cams and was ready to fit into frame. Old pistons and rings were used as the wait for a wiseco kit was going to exceed the rally date. I stripped and cleaned carburettors and had to make a needle jet using number drills and a needle jet from a different model Suzuki, as 750 ones for Katanas specific jetting are no longer available from Suzuki or Mikuni. Meanwhile I had decided to raid my best spares and use the 17” wire wheels I had saved for a rainy day project. Garry Meers from NSW was selling a 750 original exhaust system. I simply had to have that and he kindly packed and shipped it to me. Front and rear brake masters and callipers were worn and rusted and elongated mountings I machined and re bushed in my little workshop. The forks also got a

good check over and tubes cleaned up in the lathe. Everything on the running gear was worn and rusty and needed repairs and plenty of new parts thanks to Justin at Mick Hone. The original wiring loom was a mess and most connector blocks wires were barely hanging on. That took quite some time for me to thoroughly check over and repair. The paint was inspired by the Katana JCW race bikes of the era, with their yellow and black body work. I had always loved the Holden HSV Devil Yellow, so that was the paint I purchased along with all the 2K hardeners and thinners and primers

etc and was sprayed by my best mate Michael Brenton at his river shack. The decals were a custom scan and cut by Andy Read as the original side cover emblems had silver background for silver bikes. So he made a new style without the silver. Then the process of assembly and tuning began. Mixture screws set to 3 turns out got the little 750 to idle. Might need to find larger pilot jets if I can. Then I mercury balanced carburettors. Setting up chain run with the wider 4.5” rear required machining a spacer behind the sprocket and a shimmed front sprocket. I fitted longer than standard shocks, as I had a set custom made years ago for my GSX1100 racer. The bike was finally finished and test ridden for the first time, only

the day before we all headed off on the 40th Anniversary Rally in Mannum. The bike ran really well, so my wife Beck and I decided itd be safe to head off on the rally Friday morning. Her on her new Yellow Katana. And me on my Black Katana I built 25yrs ago. We had a bike display on the rivers edge at Mannum on the Saturday and plenty of people came for a look and a chat and we had a peoples choice of public votes on which Katana they liked the most. We were very proud when the Yellow Katana (now nick named Bumble Bee) won best Katana for Peoples Choice award. We all stayed at Mannum caravan park Friday and Saturday night before all riding to the annual Maccelsfield Bike Show in the Adelaide Hills on Sunday morning. Thousands of bikes turn up at this event every year. Its a great day out. Then off we went home Sunday afternoon, after having a fantastic weekend away with great mates and perfect weather.

KAWASAKI Z900, Z1000 any year or ZIR MK2 I had to recently sell my 1973 Z1 900 due to a change in personal circumstances. It was a show bike and trophy winner but I am now after more of just a “rider” for club runs, get-togethers etc. I am not a great mechanic so I really am after one that runs well, is reliable and roadworthy with a good motor, electrics etc. and does not need to look brilliant. I am based in Townsville, but with freight today being not too expensive, I will consider a bike from anywhere. Contact me through the club forum or call direct 0467600857.
