PREz REPORT
Well the South Australian crew have done it again. Yes another great National Rally in Victor Harbor has come and gone and I think it was ever better than last year. Congratulations to all the SA members involved in the rally. Around 230 bikes entered and approximately 185 at the Saturday night Presentation Dinner. Among that 230 bikes were some spectacular machines including a beautiful little Suzuki T20 250cc that won the Presidents Pick trophy. May not have been the best machine there but it was one that I felt was typical of the VJMC. It was nicely restored and ridden on rides. I had about eight bikes on my short list and it was a tough choice.
I
ts amazing just how far people will travel to the rally. I thought my trip was long enough at 2150 klms but one member came down from Darwin this year and Peter and Helen Douglas came all the way from Mackay in North Queensland. Two other rides worth mentioning are the member who rode his Honda 250 from Ballarat and another who rode his Suzuki TS250 trail bike from Grenfell in central western NSW. Well done all of you. Unfortunately we had one of our South Aussie members was injured in an accident on his way to the rally. Peter Daniels was only ten kilometers from the rally when a car failed to give way and collided with Peter’s machine. On behalf of the committee and members of the VJMC I would like to send you our very best wishes for a speedy recovery. The Annual General Meeting was part of the rally and we had one departure from the National

Committee and two new faces. Jeff Eeles makes a return to the committee and Phil Dawes from the ACT group also joined the committee. I would like to welcome both Jeff and Phil and I am sure that they will be a huge asset to the committee. Departing the committee is Heather Garth who has done about five years in the Secretary position. A very big thank you to you Heather for your input over the last five years. Phil Dawes from Canberra gave a talk on the 2115 National Rally to be held in Canberra. Photo’s of the venue were displayed in a slide show and the rally should be another fantastic event. The rally hub will be at the Alivio Tourist Park in the suburb of O’Connor on Canberra’s north side. Take care out there and enjoy riding those restored vintage japanese motorcycles. Keep it safe - John McNair

lower hunter Hi everyone, hope you are all fit and well. Looks like I am still the Lower Hunter rep for this year, but I do have a candidate for next year Bill Lucas has said that he would take over in 2015, he would have done this year, but will be out of the country a fair bit. On to our events so far in 2014. On January 19 we had a short but pleasant ride to Catherine Hill Bay pub this was arranged by the Mid Hunter rep Allan Kensit, 20 bikes attended some from the Mid Hunter Some from Lower Hunter.
It was good to see Steve Wardell’s Mum and Dad in the sidecar. On January the 29th about 10 riders turned up for a twilight ride to Newcastle to Harry’s Café De Wheels, I was unable to go owing to Yvonne being unwell. It seems to be popular with members and is set to continue. I am looking forward to the next one on the 26th February. Pie and peas for tea looks good to me. February 2nd found us riding up to Denman to Jeff Wolfgang’s Shed museum, I was gob smacked at the number of members and friends who turned up. There were 34 bikes and two cars, 45 people in total. They came from near and far, Tamworth, Sydney, Central Coast and Mid Hunter. When I saw how many at our second pick up point at Broke, I was starting to get worried that I wouldn’t have enough to feed them all. When we got to Jerry’s Plains there was another three or four bikes to join in. At Jeff’s Trevor Harvey was waiting for us from Sandy Hollow. I might have been concerned
6

about coming up short with the food, but I was stoked with the number of people who turned up. I would like to thank a few people who gave a hand on the day. Bronwyn Kendringham who gave a hand to prepare Lunch and Look after the finances, my next door neighbour Ian and his wife Barbara who transported the food and drinks up in their car, and Lyndon who got our events calendar out and emailed members near and far about this event. This has to be one of the most outstanding events so far. I would also like to thank Jeff Wolfgang himself for making his place available, and thanks to all the members who turned up. This is the most successful ride as far as numbers are concerned that the Hunter has ever had. That’s all for now see, you at the Victor Harbour in March. Try and make it along to our meeting at the Macquarie Club Cockle Creek on the second Thursday of each month at around 7.70pm. Until next time stay safe. Vince

W.A. Report Well our first W.A get together was held in Nov. 6 club members met at the Causeway in Victoria Park for a meet and greet . Most of us knew each other from past events and the common interest in Classic motorcycles . We headed out for a short ride before finishing at Barbagello raceway for the Australian Classic titles . We were treated to some really good racing and a spectacular range of Classic racing machines . As usual it is the motorcycles in the car park that also creates a show on its own . As with most of these events it the camaraderie and atmosphere that keep us interested in the old Bikes.
The weather as in most states of Australia has been that Hot that the last thing on our minds is riding or working in the shed. I am hoping to arrange a ride in the middle of April when things cool off a bit .We have the All Japanese bike Show coming up it is been held on March the 23rd at the Whistlers Chocolate Co in Middle Swan . This is a great event and is growing from strength to strength it is now in its 7th year and is a great testament to the dedication of Mark and Mike who have put the show on from day one with their band of dedicated helpers . It is an event not to be missed . Then two weeks after we have the York motorcycle spectacular so the cooler weather will also see an influx of bikes been dragged out of the sheds . So will get some
photos and a report for the next mag . Mal and I will not be attending this year’s VJMC event in Victor Harbor as we have just returned from the Island Classic and I have to many work commitments to take any more time off at the moment so we will see you all in Canberra next year . Hopefully we will be able to drag a few more sand gropers over with us . We caught up with Peter Hunt at the Island which was good . He is one very dedicated man and a great asset to the VJMC I know that the meeting in Victor Harbor will be another great success . I just wish we could make it . We would like to wish everyone attending the event a Safe journey to and from S.A . Cheers Norm

TAMWORTH RIDE November 2013. John McNair in Brisbane. Three bikes and four people met at the 7/11 garage on Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Rd just off the Gateway Motorway about 5.15am on the Saturday morning for a 5.30am departure. The bikes were VJMC members Alan Watson (Suzuki 650 V-strom) Tom McGrath (Honda CBX 1000 six) and myself on my Honda ST1100. With threatening skies we debated whether to put the wet weather gear on but decided to take a chance on it. Was a bit worried when we started to get a few spots of rain on the Logan Motorway though.
The rain held off and we had a pretty straight forward ride out to Aratula and then on towards Cunningham’s Gap. As we approached the Gap it didn’t look good with the top of the mountains shrouded in cloud. The temperature dropped quite a bit as we wound our way up the range and soon we were enveloped in cloud but amazingly the road was dry all the way over the top and down the other side where we started to see patches of blue sky and sunshine. Sure enough, by the time we rode past the Maryvale turn off on our left it was a perfect day and soon were approaching Warwick. We made a quick stop at the Caltex truck stop just before town for a drink and fuel top up. Back on the road with Warwick disappearing in the rear view mirrors it was still cool and it was an enjoyable ride down through Stanthorpe and Tenterfield to Deepwater by which time the drink at Warwick had worked its way through the system and I needed a stop. We stopped opposite the Deepwater Hotel and I ducked in to find the mens room when I noticed a shiny blue K2 Honda 750 in the lounge area and a Kawasaki in the bar along with various motorcycle photo’s on the walls. The K2 is registered and ridden. If you are in that area call in and say hello. The worms were biting at Glen Innes so stopped in at the Roadhouse where we topped up bikes and riders. Had a couple of sprinkles of rain
8

here but cleared as we rode through town and south towards Armidale. Soon were riding through Glencoe and Ben Lomond Range which is a spectacular part of the New England Hwy. At around 1,000 metre’s above sea level you get 360% views over the surrounding country giving you that feeling that you are on top of the country. Nice and cool through Guyra and Armidale. Near perfect riding weather. Things do change though and as we approached Uralla the horizon was a very dark shade of blue/ black from one side to the other. Stopped in town to put the wet gear on, with Tom explaining that I was a sook. Out with his phone and a check of the weather map showed lots of dark red colours just north of Tamworth. Tom quickly became a sook and put the wet gear on too. Pretty soon we hit the rain with the sky almost black with shades of green and it suddenly felt like it was almost night instead of the middle of the day. The rain was quite heavy and the cross winds were giving us a hell of a battering with chain lightning and thunder. We passed a Honda Goldwing who had passed us in Uralla while we had stopped and he was sheltering under a huge gum tree from the torrential rain and cyclonic winds. Not very smart. Didn’t hear of any motorcyclist killed by falling trees though. At one stage I noticed the rain drops bouncing off my gloves. Hang on, that’s bloody hail. We did survive though and the rain had almost stopped when we rode into an empty

garage at the back of the Central Hotel which the owner had left open for us at about 2.30pm. Checked into our rooms, showered and changed then downstairs to the bar for a few drinks with the Tamworth members along with Sydney and Gosford members too. For those who had arrived on the Friday or early Saturday there was a ride organized to Manilla for lunch. They too copped the storm on their way back with one fellow just in a Tee shirt. Not good. All his chest and arms were covered in huge welts. One of the Sydney riders had huge chunks of paint stripped off his helmet. Fifty people were booked into the dining room at 6pm for the pre booked dinner and a great social night with raffles to raise money for the Blue Ribbon Cancer Fund. Then it was back to the bar for a few nightcaps. So good to catch up with fellow members from Tamworth, Gosford, Newcastle and Sydney. I am sure someone added more stairs back up to the rooms, like double the amount! How rude! Sunday morning sleep was shattered with the

sound of what at first I thought was a hair dryer going but as I woke up a little more I realized it was two fellows with motorized blowers cleaning leaves off the street below at 5am. I looked around for something to throw at them. Would have killed for a slingshot at that moment. It was a beautiful morning and we all had breakfast in one of several outdoor café’s along Tamworth’s main street. Not a leaf in sight either. Bastards! Around the next corner a section of the street had been closed off and approximately 50 bikes were on display. These ranged from a 50cc Honda Mini Trail to an immaculate Yamaha FJ1200 and Honda CB1100R. In between were a K2 Honda 750, Kawasaki 900 Jaffa plus Z1R’s, a Hodaka 125 Combat Wombat, RZ500 Yamaha, Suzuki GT750’s, SRX250 Yamaha, SL125 Honda and many more. A few trophies were given out and Tom got one for furtherest distance travelled. After lunch we visited the Powerhouse Motorcycle Museum then headed off back up to Armidale and onto the Waterfall Way towards

Ebor and Dorrigo stopping off at the amazing Wollomombi Gorge with Wollomombi and Chandler Falls plummeting 1,000 feet to the bottom of the gorge. The fuel light came on about 15 klms before Ebor so refueled at the Ebor Garage. $1.68 cpl. Cost $40.00. Ouch! The garage was closing in 10 minutes and with 3 to 4 litres left it would have been close by the time I rode the 48 klms to Dorrigo. Got rain just before Dorrigo with low cloud so it was good to ride into the beautiful Dorrigo Hotel. They have about eight motel rooms at the back with 1.5mtr verandah which was perfect for motorcycle parking. Some other motorcyclist a few rooms up already had their bikes under cover. Small world eh1 The others turned out to be friends Andrew and Sheryl Boyd from Casino and Andrew’s mate Craig from Toowoomba. We all had a fun night in the hotel that night. One of the waitresses clearly had the hots for Craig. Quite funny. Meanwhile the heavens had opened outside. Monday morning, we had breaky in the hotel

then wandered up to Juan’s Smallest Motorcycle Museum in the world. A beaut café with 3 or 4 bikes and lots of memorabilia. Leaving Dorrigo (beautiful place) we rode out to the GraftonAmidale Road and down the mountain to the Old Coaching Station Hotel at Nimboyda for a coffee. The hotel is owned by actor Russell Crowe. Have to go back one day and check out the museum there. Refueled in Grafton and with several black clouds around it was back on with the wet gear. Andrew took us on at top road out along the Clarence River to Lawrence and then along Pringles Way in the rain to Whiporie on the Summerland Way. Pringles Way used to be dirt but is now a great detour. Said goodbye to Andrew and Sheryl at Casino and managed to dodge the rain up through Kyogle and the Lion’s Road just missing a storm at Jimboomba. Safely home it was time for a cuppa and to reflect on what was an awesome weekend as the storm caught up. Thanks to the VJMC Tamworth members for a great weekend. John McNair.

Adelaide Hills, Jan 19 After five days of temperatures of over 40, Sunday 19th dawned clear and cool, just right for a ride in the nearby Adelaide Hills. Fifteen riders turned up at Stirling some 12 kms out from the CBD to start the ride at 10.00am.
An absolute immaculate and original condition red RD400C made its VJMC debut with 7,000 miles of the clock, it was a lucky find on US EBay and privately imported by its proud owner. After a briefing on the corner marshal and tail end charlie system, which we implemented for the first time and a warning that the roads we were about to ride were amongst the twistiest in Australia, we were off. We passed just under Mount Lofty to be greeted by hoards of rampant cyclists around every corner, also out enjoying the day. I think every motorcycle ever registered in SA was also on the road. Down the Lobethal Road we went, arms pumping up to negotiate a 30 kph corner every 50 metres. On up past Marble Hill with the senses at full alert as the bikes were seldom vertical. We had our hopes dashed of our plans to ride down the infamous Corkscrew Road as it was closed off
for an hour for a community cycling event. Damn it, we had picked the very day that the Adelaide Hills were alive with Tour Down Under aspirants. Not to worry as we headed down Montacute Road which was a good plan B’. Another deviation was forced on us (plans C and D) as we headed up the Tea Tree Gully Road to eventually get to our destination of Cudlee Creek where thankfully no one wanted a cuddle. Everyone arrived safely but with sore arms and legs from the constant heaving of bikes around the many corners. A special mention goes to Peter and Chris on the Kawasaki KZ1300 six for actually keeping up. Peter surely must have had a good lie down for the rest of the day on arriving home. Can’t wait to do that ride again but we will pick a day that does not clash with the Tour Down Under next time. Neville Gray
SA Xmas Ride Arriving at the BP Morphett Vale, to be met with the not totally unexpected jeering and ridicule about Honda reliability (I had to take the ute due to some, er, rare Honda technical issues), the gathered crowd was ready to head off to Mick Bulman’s place for morning tea and to check out his impressive collection and projects. The roads
were a little wet so the pace was steady. Mick and Jane had provided some fresh sticky buns and hot coffee and cool drinks for the 18 who arrived – many many thanks guys for your hospitality and generosity, we really do appreciate it. Mick’s shed never fails to impress.....including the latest acquisition, the little know “Pointer”..... no, I had never heard of them either, one of those smaller Jap companies that were around in the early 60s, but not sold here (as far as we know). Interesting stuff.

We then set off for the Stanley Bridge Hotel at Verdun, via the Mick Bulman scenic route, again a bit wet and slippery, but happily all made it safely.... We had a record crowd of 39 booked for lunch – thank you to everybody that came along and helped make the day such a great success – it was great to see partners and family and friends along as well. The 3 course lunch was well received, a bargain at $30 (after the $5 subsidy provided by the SA region of the club) and all seemed to have a good time, evidenced by the last of us leaving the pub well after 3pm...... Again, special thanks to Mick and Jane and to everybody for making the effort to be there – a great day.

Gawler Bikefest
Arriving at the event we put up the marquee and placed the bikes around before most heading directly to the swap meet to check out the goods. Present was Peter Donnellan with Chris (Kawasaki 1300), Ron Ritter (Yamaha RD 350), Grant Harding (Honda 750/4), Brenton Marshall (Honda 500/4), Mick Bulman (Pointer 250) and Mick Godfrey as support.
During the course of the morning Brentons’ Honda was transferred to the Show and Shine area. We had a good interest from the public and even signed up a new member on the spot. There were a lot of Japanese bikes in the swap meet, from bits that looked close to being tip material to quite reasonable complete bikes. There was even a Hodaka Combat Wombat plus extra pieces of another one. After lunch the winners of the Show and Shine were announced and Brenton took out the Pre1980 with the Honda – another one for the trophy cabinet!!

SA Toy Run After erecting our marquee and setting up with the few bikes already there we then waited for the arriving hordes. Just before midday the riders started to arrive and kept coming and coming. We added more bikes to our stand and then
started the chatting and answering questions from prospective new members. We ended up with eleven bikes on the stand and got a lot of positive response from the display. Our thanks go to Peter Donnellan and Christine for organising the stand and to our usual band of loyal supporters who always seem intent on enjoying themselves. Mick G.

For the first day of summer it was a blazing hot day for the annual Classic Japan car and bike show in Como Park, South Yarra, Melbourne. Organised by the Toyota Car Club, the VJMC again made a striking presence in the centre of the main oval.
Story by Ian Royall Photos by Anne Kierren (Red George Media) A few bikes made their club debuts, fresh from the workshop or shed. Richard Morrison’s reborn GSX-R750 made it a trio of the classic 1980s sportsbikes while Leong Tan’s Suzuki 125cc Stinger attracted plenty of attention. Leong had secured the low-mileage twostroker through club stalwart Brian Cutler who obviously knows a good barn find when he sees one. Just 1600 miles and once fuelled-up, it started at second kick. An original 1971 bike with a genuine 1600 miles on the clock. There were plenty of other highlights too – the head-turning white 1964 Honda CB72, the two super Kawasakis – unmissable in metallic green and purple, freshly imported from the US - and Jeff Eeles’ cute 75cc Kawasaki minibike. A clutch of Ross Hulls’ Kawasaki 1970s dirt trackers also drew a crowd – there was even a crusty old helmet that seemed even older than the four bikes. Andrew and Kathy Hall provided the soundtrack for the morning when Andrew fired up his Yamaha MX360 and it sounded just like it was 1973 all over again. Another classic Suzuki was Arn Tran’s 1984 RG500 Gamma. One of only 9284 sold worldwide, this two-stroke bullet was inspired by the successful Grand Prix version. Arn said restorative paintwork had done by a
neighbour to cover scratches on the back of the bike. “A high number of nuts/bolts, rubbers and cables have been replaced. I’m still trying to hunt down some OEM parts. Will have a look inside the motor when the time is right,” he said. Arn’s other bikes are a modified 1988 Yamaha RZ250 (work in progress), a 1985 Honda NS400R, a 1984 Yamaha RZ500 and a modified 1996 Yamaha Vmax1200. Melbourne metro area representative John Doward was delighted with the turn-out on the day. About 56 bikes were on display, surpassing last year’s numbers by about 50 per cent. Toyota Car Club president Frank Ferrantino said the event was the biggest in the club’s 38year history. “Having the VJMC take centre stage on the main oval was an invaluable part of one of the day’s purpose, to expose owners of other Japanese marques to our favorite vehicles. Owners of Datsuns, get to enjoy Toyotas, who in turn enjoy Hondas, who enjoy Nissans, who then appreciate Kawasakis, etc, etc,’’ he said. “By having the bikes there, we were able to expose those who are passionate about cars, to the passion members of VJMC are about their historically significant bikes.” A total of $4000 was raised for the Fred Hollows Foundation, double last year’s tally.

First of all, welcome to Ray Burrows who has taken the huge step to become the rep for South East Queensland. Ray has been involved in motorcycles for many years including classic motorcycle dirt track racing as well as road riding. He is a keen club member and I am sure that he will do a great job. Ray takes over from Steve Day who has had to step down due to family commitments. Those little ones do take up a lot of time. A big thank you to Steve for the time he as spent as S/E Qld rep.
The Saturday morning gatherings at Tony’s Café continue to be popular. The café is at Tony Armstrongs Suzuki shop on Kingston-Beenliegh Rd Underwood and serves good food at reasonable prices. Good off-street parking helps to make the morning. Most members get there around 7.30 to 8am.

Great to see Don and Raylene Williams come down from Tewantin on the northern end of the coast to join us for lunch. Although short on numbers it was a great ride down to Urbanville in northern NSW via Mount Lindesay Hwy too.
The year got off to a good start in January with the Historic Clubs annual Breakkie ride to Red Cedar picnic grounds on the Northbrook Parkway west of Mount Glorious. There was food and drinks available and lots of great classic bikes. We also linked up with the Honda CB750 Club on their ride to The Barn at Flagstone Creek. The restaurant was good and the tour of the adjoining Scotty’s Garage museum was fantastic. Honda 750 club member Ian O’Keefe led the ride and he took us on some great back roads to get there and back. Hotel Ride. Words & Photo’s – John Doward. The Bonnie Doon Hotel, located on the north end of Lake Eildon, has been recently purchased by VJMC member & Mag editor Tom Calderwood.
Following a suggestion by Jeff Eeles, Bob & Jenny Kitchener from the VJMC Vic North East Region organised a ride to the Bonnie Doon Hotel on Sunday 23rd March 2014 with members from all Vic regions invited to attend for a lunchtime meeting. A few days prior, Melbourne member Stewart Kneeshaw also organised a meeting point at the All Moto Café in Healesville for an optional group ride from Healesville to Bonnie Doon. There was a good turnout with 25 motorcycles at the Bonnie Doon Hotel, including 22 VJM’s. There we all had a nice lunch, chat and

inspection of all our great motorcycles before a pleasant ride home back through the scenic country around there. For those who rode through the Black Spur, there was a typical road blitz with police in a camouflaged hideout checking speed and other indiscretions with police cars down the road pulling over offenders. There were lots of advance warnings from cars flashing their headlights and there were no problems for us responsible VJMC riders. Everyone agreed that we should meet up at the Hotel again one day, and Tom says there will be a ‘VJMC Specials” menu and some prizes waiting.

2014 VJMC NATIONAL RALLY REPORT The 2014 VJMC National Rally was once again held in the beautiful SA coastal location of Victor Harbor on Friday 14th March to Sunday 16th March.
184 entrants and 220 bikes descended on the busy tourist location, with people travelling from as far away as Darwin and Mackay, arriving on the Friday to a welcoming bbq at the rally hub, The Beachfront Holiday Park, and kindly supplied by Victor Motorcycles with assistance from the Victor Harbor Scouts. Old friends reunited, new friends made, stories swapped, laughs to be had, it was a huge occasion held on a perfect night.

Saturday morning was the main ride of the event, but before the 140 riders set off they were treated to a free pancake breakfast....some entrants looked like a couple of aspirins would have helped more, but everyone was in good spirits as the convoy headed off to a morning tea stop, supplied by the CWA, at Strathalbyn. A shorter ride left the hub soon after for those that couldn’t do the main ride - this one down to

the barrages at Goolwa, where the Murray meets the sea. Arriving back in Victor Harbor around 11.30 the riders assembled on Warland Reserve in the heart of town for the main show’n’shine and concours de elegance - over 200 Japanese bikes of all shapes and sizes were gathered and provided a fantastic spectacle for entrants

and spectators alike. A gourmet bbq was ready for them, superbly presented by Rotary. The rain gods threatened as a light squall or two blew in, but soon the sun was out again and the day was near perfect. The judges were very busy scoring those entered for the concours – so many bikes of such high standard made the job very difficult, and those that won awards can be sure that they were thoroughly deserved. Saturday evening, after the AGM at the hub, we all headed to the Hotel Victor, where 191 people were seated for the main dinner and awards evening. Again, a great time was had by all, and some very proud people were presented with their trophies and prize packs. We were privileged to have Jim Scaysbrook and wife Sue attend the dinner (they also rode in the morning ride on a borrowed bike), and Jim gave a short talk and helped present the awards. The traditional raffle was held, with the super prizes donated by many businesses and individuals being very much appreciated.

Sunday morning was a slower start for most, with a shorter ride heading off at 10am for Yankalilla, a stop at the bakery for much needed coffee, and then returning to the hub via the infamous Range Road, a truly great motorcycle road, and taking in spectacular views of Victor Harbor right around to the Coorong. This was followed by another delicious bbq cooked by the Lions Club.
And that brought us to the end of the rally – all in all a great occasion, marred only by the unfortunate incident of an SA entrant being knocked from his bike on the way to the rally on Friday afternoon, resulting in some hospital time and no doubt a lengthy recovery – all the best to Pete. He did however pick up the Hard Luck award, but I’m sure he could have done without it!

A rally like this can not be put together without the support of major sponsors – thank you to Shannons Insurance, Yamaha Retro, Victor Motorcycles, Motul Oils, Adelaide Motorcycle Recovery and the City of Victor Harbor. Plus the dozens of other supporters who donated raffle prizes as well of course the many volunteers who give of their time and energy to put
everything together and make it work on the day – thank you. Next year the VJMC National Rally moves to Canberra – I’m sure we can look forward to another great event – bring it on. Peter Hunt.
