PRESIDENTS REPORT
AT LAST, SOME COOLER WEATHER IS HERE. WELL FOR THE SOUTHERN STATES THAT MAY NOT BE SUCH A GOOD THING, ESPECIALLY TASMANIA, VICTORIA AND SOUTH AUSTRALIA, BUT HERE IN QUEENSLAND IT MEANS COLD MORNINGS BUT MOSTLY FINE DAYS. PERFECT. UNFORTUNATELY THOUGH IT DOESN’T LAST LONG ENOUGH WITH THE HOT WEATHER BACK IN NOVEMBER. Even mid to late October is quite warm. Oh well, can’t have it all I suppose. We will just have to make the most of next few months. One of the highlights over the next few month will be the 2016 Laverda Concours at the Cleveland Showgrounds on Brisbane’s bayside. This is one of Queensland’s biggest bike shows with huge crowds attending the one day event. The South/ East Queensland group won the trophy for Best Club Display at the 2015 Concours. Some planning is taking place now for the 2016 event to be held on Sunday July 17th. If you live in South/East QLD or northern NSW come along and feast your eyes on some magnificent motorcycles. We have spent quite some time trying to get a rep on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland however Alan Stevens who has moved up to Maleny from Sydney has taken on the position and doing and is doing a great job. If you would like to find out more from Alan you contact him on 0400 751 285. With two wonderful rallies in Canberra 2017 will see us all heading to Tamworth in north western NSW. It’s about four and a half hours from Sydney and seven hours from Brisbane. The Tamworth group have been very enthusiastic since starting and I am sure they will put on a great rally. Thank you to the Canberra team on two fantastic rallies. In the lead up to Tamworth the National Committee and others will review the judging and layout guidelines of the rally show and shine which will see the Concours bikes in a separate area and the need for any changes or omission of bikes entered to by passed onto the rally registrar avoiding wasted time by judges looking for bikes which are not there. I have been to the National Motorcycle Museum in

Nabiac on the NSW mid north coast twice before but thought I would pop in for two hours on the way home from Canberra. Had and overnight stay in nearby Bulladelah and was on their door at 9am. The museum has hundreds of motorcycles and an awesome array of memorabilia and before I knew it was 12 noon and three hours had flown by so after a quick lunch in the village we hit the road for the seven hours back to Brisbane. The museum has their annual swap meet on the last Sunday in July ( 31st this year) and this would make a good time to visit. If you do though, allow yourself at least five hours. A recent fatal motorcycle accident on the Bruce Hwy north of Brisbane highlights the danger of riding two abreast in the same lane. The dead rider was in a group of five motorcycles travelling south when one veered o to the side and hit a guard rail before bouncing back and hitting his mate bringing both riders down in front of the following riders, one of whom ran over the front rider as he lay on the road. The highway was closed for six hours causing major tra c chaos. Two incidents on past VJMC Rally rides could have had similar results when one rider overtook another on the left with their handlebars missing each other by only a few millimetres. At this year’s rally a rider was waiting for the unbroken line to end before changing lanes to the left and after checking that lane was clear proceeded to change lanes when a small bike shot out over the unbroken line behind him and overtook him resulting in the rider having to take evasive action to miss the other motorcycle. IT WAS A GREAT PLEASURE FOR ME TO BE MADE A LIFE MEMBER OF THE VJMC, AND TO RECEIVE THE AWARD IN FRONT OF ALL THE OTHER LIFE MEMBERS AT THE 2016 RALLY. The award means a lot to me, having celebrated 30 years continual membership in the Club. I’d also like to take this opportunity to congratulate John McNair on also achieving Life Member. Congratulations John, and thank you for your on-going contribution as President. Thanks also to the National Committee who saw fit to make the award, and to the person who made the nomination … you know who you are. No one sets out, in any organisation, to become a Life Member. And, it’s not just about hanging in
there for 30 years. It’s about being passionate for the Club, and ‘putting in’. That may be through being on the National Committee; being an Area Representative in your region; by just being an active member in your area; or, something as simple as contributing to the VJMC Magazine from time to time. I’d encourage you all to have a go at participating at some level. It doesn’t hurt, and you might actually find you’ll enjoy it.
AREA REP COORDINATORS REPORT IT IS GREAT TO SEE MEMBERS PUTTING UP THEIR HANDS TO BECOME AREA REPS IN SOME OF OUR REGIONAL AREAS, THANK YOU TO GREG INGLIS (ARMADALE), RON CAMPEY (NARRABRI) AND GARRY LENNIE (AREA NOT NAMED YET HOWEVER GARRY IS FROM KYABRAM) WHO HAVE ALL VOLUNTEERED TO HAVE A GO. They are all planning their first events in these new areas and I wish them well. Thanks also to Phil Scorah and James Sepsakos who are going to share the Melbourne Rep job. Outgoing Rep John Doward has done a great job and deserves all member’s thanks and congratulations. We have not had a Rep for the Sunshine Coast for some time and Alan Stevens who has recently moved from Sydney has put himself forward,

This new display idea was really a big success. The banner was clearly visible, even amongst all the other colourful signs and distractions in the rear car-parking area of The Plaza, permission again given by Hookers as managing agents. The weather was still being affected by the aftermath of Cyclone Winston - so not promising. This certainly kept numbers down this year, especially the expected visitors from Queensland. However, despite this deterant there was a very good turn-up of around 80 bikes, with the various classic age-group categories competently arranged in apple-pie order by our host club. There was even a special section for un-restored classics to 1986. This new feature created much visitor interest, as did the 2-stroke section. Two flat- tankers, an RC30, some girder-forked era 1930/40s and a superb Rickman Honda 4 were just some of the other delights. Perhaps a private Honda stand was the most impressive display overall, with 2 tents protecting a magnificent www.vjmc.org.au
bevvy of collector-standard Honda sports-bikes. This polished display consequently had a constant stream of admiring visitors and participants good pedestrian-flow, right next to us! Drizzle on/off was the order of the morning, necessitating use of a plastic sheet and a tarpaulin to protect the display of magazines and VJMC application forms/information sheets/contact cards on our demountable table - also thoughtfully provided by Peter. We sorely needed a tent - this was was painfully evident after multiple alarms and scrambles for cover. [Next year we have obtained an offer of a tent via a local bike shop, so this handicap will hopefully disappear.] But in the interim, thanks go to our local Shannons Insurance representative for part-use of his tent providing us with some very welcome shelter, especially in the major deluge that occurred later in the day. From start at 8.30am there was a good throughflow of visitor numbers to our stall. There was VINTAGE JAPANESE MOTORCYCLE CLUB

particular interest in our ample supply of free copies of the VJMC magazine, especially if it was their bike featured on the front cover! Around 15 application forms/ information packages & contact cards were given out in total. There were some good extended chats/feed-back from interested visitors and established club members. It appears some older restorer/classic clubs in our region have recently placed a moratorium on future membership applications. This means that a waiting-list would be in operation, consequently delaying Classic Rego for new entrants to the classic scene. (NB - RMS ‘classic status’ concession is currently governed by a rolling ‘30yrs Rule’ in NSW). But it is felt that this new policy, apparently instituted for administrative and legal reasons, may impact positively on us by increasing the volume of inquiries/sign-ups for new VJMC memberships locally. The final trophy award session was marred by the bad weather. At 1.15am “Huey” (the rain-

god) decided to bucket it down in true North Coast style! However, the final session was still well attended with the famous 1950-70s Norton/ Suzuki privateer road-racer Jack Ahearn as NRCMCC club patron presenting the ‘best restored bike’ trophy for a partially restored BSA Bantam with an army/service theme. While there were some glitches, overall the final session went well in wind and heavy rain, always staunchly supported by our usual group of hard-core, water-proofed enthusiasts. I feel sure that with better weather the 3rd S&S at Alstonville will continue this success next year, with added momentum, making it a worthy successor to the cancelled Lismore event. Thanks go to the Plaza management, NRCMCC Show Committee, Shannons Insurance and Northern Rider magazine for their help, advice and assistance. I feel pretty sure that our VJMC Far North Coast’s Chapter formation cannot be far away now.

A VERY PLEASANT DAY GREETED THE RIDERS FOR THE “SUB QUARTER LITRE” BIKE RUN DURING MID FEB. APPROXIMATELY 17 BIKES TOOK PART, THE MAJORITY BEING UNDER 250CC. WE WERE SCHEDULED TO LEAVE AT HALF PAST TEN, AND DID SO (MORE OR LESS) AFTER A CHAT AND CATCH UP SESSION. THERE WAS A GOOD VARIETY OF BIKES ON THE RIDE, AND ONE RIDER (COLIN JAY) HAD RIDDEN DOWN FROM CLARE FOR THE RIDE ON HIS YAM YB100.
We set off from the Birkenhead Tavern with Ben at the helm, so he could show us his suggested addition to the original route I had in mind, which took up past the Submarine yards. Then it was back onto the road for Outer Harbor, and then heading for Glenelg, utilising as much of the roads closest to the beaches. The pace was not set particularly quickly. which meant everyone could enjoy the sea views as they rode along. Judy Beyer www.vjmc.org.au
hopped out of the main riding group occasionally to take some photos of the ride too. I did pull the group over at one point, and asked them to remain there whilst I went to investigate the whereabouts of the sweep rider Andre. It turned out that Andre had just been shepherding a couple of the bikes near the back. So once that was confirmed, I rode back to the front of the stationary group and we could get going again. We spotted John & Roy at Henley Beach having a coffee, and they would be joining us later for the ride back to Birkenhead. We swung into Glenelg and headed for the Tram Terminus end of Jetty Road. Once in Jetty Road, we then turned left into Gordon Street to begin the journey back to the Birkenhead Tavern. On the way back, Andre signalled to Dave Ward that he was going to wait with a rider whose was experiencing a little difficulty, so Dave kindly took up the role of sweep rider for the rest of the ride. Roy and John joined us at this point for the rest of the ride too. Whilst looking in my mirrors, I noticed a bike in our group I hadn’t seen when we set off. It turned out to be a fella called Dave, who liked the look of what we were doing and asked if he could join us on his Honda Monkey bike (I think), to which the answer was naturally “yes”. Further into the ride back, Les Beyer experienced a bit of difficulty with his speedo cable on his Yam YDS3. So we carried onto the Birkenhead Tavern and Les joined us there. Once we got back to Outer Harbor, Ben once again led the way to take us back past the Submarine yards. This gave some folk a chance to give their steeds a bit of a clear out (at legals of course) before arriving at the Birkenhead Tavern. This year, I had the foresight to book a couple of tables for lunch at the Birkenhead Tavern. A good grub/yarn session ensued and then everyone headed off at approx. 1:30-2:00pm. A good selection of bikes turned out including: Myself, Yam DT175 1978. A GOOD TURN-OUT OF 11 VJ MEMBERS ON BIKES WERE JOINED BY 3 CBX OWNERS MEMBERS ON A COOL AND OVERCAST DAY DURING APRIL AT THE KERSBROOK SERVO FOR A MEANDER THROUGH THE HILLS. We rode from Forreston and Mount Pleasant before reaching our first stop near Black Hill for a hot drink and cake and a drool at a fair few motorcycles in various states of roadworthiness. After a lengthy goggle we went on to Mannum via Walkers Flat for lunch, when everyone made their own minds up about food and the route home. We thank Wayne and Viktoria for their hospitality. Our next social is April 28th and the next ride is Wardies Run South, starting from the usual Stirling place on 15th May. I am now looking for those of you who want to come to the mid-winter lunch at Stanley Bridge on the 17th July to let me know on 0401 196 922 so I can secure our booking. www.vjmc.org.au

A MAJOR HIGHLIGHT FOR THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2016 HAS BEEN THE NATIONAL RALLY. SEVERAL OF THE SEQ VJMC MEMBERS CHOSE TO RIDE DOWN TO THE RALLY, AND WHAT AN EPIC RIDE IT WAS…
There were a few groups of SEQ members who made the trip. Graeme Knight, John Mcnair and Eric and Merilyne Leah were amongst those who rode. I rode my CX500 down, together with Chris Dupen (Kawasaki W2SS), Tom McGrath (Honda CX500 café racer) and Rod Smith (Yamaha TRX850). They might be old (in some cases very old) bikes, but we didn’t spare them: we rode them like they were designed to be ridden! This, of course, did have consequences… We headed down from Brisbane through to Walcha for an overnight stay at the Walcha Royal Café & Accomodation. We arrived to ice cold beers laid out just for us, a fantastic atmosphere, and friendly hosts. The owner was more than happy to lend us his shed and tools to house and fettle the bikes. This is a place that you really must check out! The next morning, we travelled onwards towards Mount Victoria, taking in the Putty Road and magnificent Bells Line of Road. What a ride! We managed to get to the Mount Victoria Hotel for the night, where we enjoyed what may possibly be the best chicken schnitzel ever crafted. The next night saw us arrive at the rally site in Canberra, where we met up with some familiar faces and enjoyed two days of socialising and riding. The National Museum proved to be a great venue for displaying the bikes. On Sunday we rode on to Jindabyne, taking the opportunity of riding up Kosciuszko Road to

Charlotte Pass. The contrast and combination of the black bitumen, bright yellow road markings, flowing curves, no cars, crisp clean air, and green slopes dotted with rocky crags and skeletal bleached-white tree trunks reaching like crooked fingers to the sky is surreal and frankly is a mustride experience. The next day we headed down the Alpine Way to Tooma, stopping to effect some running repairs along the way. After staying in Crookwell for the night, we headed to Bathurst for breakfast. Rod, Tom and I convened in Tamworth for breakfast, and we headed to Guyra. There, we had an excellent lunch, and decided we didn’t want to go home yet. We chose to head west via the Tingha Road to Inverell, where we visited the Inverell Motor Museum before riding to Texas for the night, staying at the Stockman Hotel. The Stockman is a bike-friendly pub. Our final day on the road saw us enjoying the Stanthorpe-Texas Road before heading home, a fitting end to a 3800km journey that wore out many a tyre and one or two bikes! In other news, the annual Oliver’s Bike Show was again a success, with good weather and an interesting array of machines. Thanks must go to Eric and Merilyne Leah for helping to organise this each year, their attention to detail goes a long way to making an event run seamlessly! I hope to see you for the Laverda Concours in July, please come down and say hello!

WESTERN REGION WANDERINGS JANUARY - VJMC MEMBERS VIC “MUDD” MULLER (WESTERN VIC), ALLAN HAINES (CENTRAL VIC) AND ALAN STORK (WESTERN VIC) FINALLY CONQUERED THE MAC PARK SCOOTER RACE AND FINISHED THE EVENT, ALBEIT IN 17TH PLACE! The scooter limped home with a damaged pipe and a coolant leak following a spectacular low side whilst running fast/ consistent 1’58”s. After the crash we were battling to achieve 2’15”s. February ride was a rendezvous with Central Vic at Malmsbury great day out with lots of nice VJs.

He knocked on the door and asked if it was for sale as he thought it would be a fitting Christmas present for Meryn. The chap was so taken with the idea that he was happy to sell the bike! Robert Taylors “new” bike on the other hand

is a different tale, he has owned it for 38 years purchasing it when only a couple of years old from a bloke in Bendigo. Robert has brought it out of the shed after about 20 years resting.

GENERAL BUSINESS: John Doward proposed the following items in writing prior to the meeting: • VJMC Website Calendar. All VJMC Area Rep’s should list all their local rides & events on the VJMC website calendar. This will encourage more members to participate and is also a good way to promote the club as the calendar is publically viewable. • VJMC Mag. The VJMC Mag should have 4 issues per year with fixed contribution deadline and publication dates. This will assist members to plan and contribute more articles to the mag. • NATCOM Meeting Minutes. All NATCOM meeting minutes should be released onto the VJMC website within 2 weeks of each meeting. This will provide members with more timely information of club activities. • Recognition of Long Term Outstanding Members. There are many VJMC members who make excellent voluntary contributions to the club. I know of two in particular that should be recognised for their long term outstanding efforts: a. Mick Godfrey, Has been involved in the club since at least 1986? Currently National Membership Secretary that involves a huge amount of regular and ongoing work. b. Jeff Eeles. Has also been involved in the club since at least 1986? Currently Victoria Club Permit Scheme Registrar that also involves a huge amount of regular and ongoing work. www.vjmc.org.au
Please note that these are suggestions for improvements, not complaints. The club is well run by friendly volunteers who donate their time and all their work is very much appreciated. Meeting Response: • VJMC Website Calendar. There was discussion around the ease and difficulty of posting Calendar items on the VJMC website and the access required to post. David Bernardi advised that posting was relatively easy for users with authorised access. However, this was not the experience of some other users. A set of instructions may be required but this would need to be developed. Members advised they were experiencing problems posting photographs on the discussion forum. Paul Johnson advised that he could post instructions using an external host site such as Photobucket. It was suggested that membership details need to be easily accessible and obvious to visitors to the site. Jeff Eeles suggested that a single location on Historic registration details for each state would be useful. • VJMC Mag. • NATCOM Meeting Minutes. Paul Johnson advised that the February NatCom minutes were posted on the VJMC website on 15 February 2016 and that the two week timetable was achievable with circulation and confirmation by Committee members confirmed prior to posting. • Recognition of Long Term Outstanding Members New Life Members Jeff Eeles and John McNair were inducted at the Presentation Dinner at the 2016 Rally. (Michael Godfrey is already a Life Member of the Club) There was general discussion around paid positions and donations to charity. Jeff Eeles thanked the National Committee for the support for the Japan Tour and the tour raffle prize at the 2015 National Rally. VJMC FINANCIAL REPORT
THIS IS THE CLUB’S FINANCIAL REPORT FOR OUR REPORTING YEAR FROM MARCH 2015 TO THE END OF FEBRUARY 2016, AS PRESENTED AT THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. THE CLUB IS REGISTERED AS AN INCORPORATED ASSOCIATION IN THE STATE OF NEW SOUTH WALES, AND THIS REPORT HAS ALSO BEEN LODGED WITH THE NSW DEPARTMENT OF FAIR TRADING IN LINE WITH THE REQUIREMENTS FOR TIER 2 ASSOCIATIONS. The main items to note are that the club is fincially secure, making a modest operating surplus over the year of $3847.45. The Financial Statement is attached. The main income streams for the club are derived from membership subscriptions and merchandise sales. The 2015 Rally Reconciliation is also attached showing a modest surplus. The club’s expenses cover a range of activities, with the main expense being the VJMC Magazine, the Badges Program, advertising and promotional
activities, and Fees, permits and Insurance, primarily our General Liability Insurance policy which is a legal requirement. The club’s assets are held primarily as bank deposits and merchandise (stock in hand), as shown in the Financial Statement. As of the 29th February 2016, the club had no liabilities. Much the same can be said about the 2016 Annual VJMC Rally, held here in Canberra over the weekend of 5th and 6th March 2016. Everything worked smoothly on the surface, due to the hard work of a great committee – and under the surface, most of that hard work, last-minute jobs and emergencies was done underwater and out of sight of the assembled masses. This being the second annual VJMC rally held in Canberra, the basics were all pretty much in place. We did have a change of venue this year to a location just outside the ACT, in southern NSW. This change was to ensure that over the 2 rallies, we catered for members of our Branch who reside in both the ACT and southern NSW. On to the Rally itself – the location of Rally HQ was the Capital Country Holiday Park, located on the outskirts of the ACT. This venue was chosen for a number of reasons, including its relatively close proximity to the rally display at the National Museum of Australia, the suitability of the on-site accommodation for over 200 rally entrants and the capacity to cater for all rally activities under one roof. A great local pub and bottle-shop just up the road from Rally HQ were an added bonus and very popular with rally entrants. The rally HQ proved to be a great location enjoyed by all participants. There was no shortage of competitors on the tennis court and in the swimming pool! Well actually I never saw one tennis ball being hit, or a backstroke in the pool all weekend, despite the summer temps. Saturday morning dawned clear and warm – a sign of things to come for the rest of the weekend. We had around 165 bikes ready to rumble for the morning’s ride down into Canberra, which was a magnificent sight so early in the morning. Corner marshals for the rides on both days were provided by the local Veteran Vintage & Classic MCC, they did a great job and we are very fortunate to have a local club with members who are happy to assist like this. Our ride coordinator for both days was Lou Baljak, Lou was easy to spot on Saturday morning as he steamed out of both ears looking for his ride leader ;) which happened to be me, busy talking to entrants instead of concentrating on ride briefings. www.vjmc.org.au
At around 9.30am the large group of riders all started the ride into town. The route this year was a little different for the initial section into the arboretum – including an unscheduled run almost all the way into Woden (thanks to some unscheduled roadworks on our initial ride route) – but the corner marshals did an excellent job despite the last-minute hitches and the ride went very smoothly. As we rolled through the grounds of the arboretum, the line of bikes stretched along the complete length of the access road – an awesome sight. We then proceeded to travel along the lake foreshore via Yarralumla and into the Parliamentary triangle. This year we avoided the road closures associated with Skyfire, so the rally entrants were able to ride right along the edge of the lake – the view from here across the lake is really good. The ride then proceeded back over Kings Avenue bridge, on to Anzac Parade and up to the summit of Mt Ainslie. After a break to enjoy the sights, the ride then proceeded back down Mt Ainslie – but not before a large wallaby and its joey decided to attack the lead riders just after the first corner! We managed to avoid any disasters and rode onto the rally display at the National Museum of Australia. This year, the local rally committee had done a lot more work on organising the riders as they approached the display area – the end result was that all bikes were dispatched quickly and efficiently to their respective judging areas. This new approach was a big improvement on last year. For the 2016 Rally, the weather was decidedly warmer than 2015 – to the extent that all rally entrants at the display resembled a herd of Brown’s cows – moving around continuously and seeking the shade wherever possible. With a top temp on Saturday of 38 degrees – this was hardly surprising. Due to the very hot temps, the public attendance was a bit down compared to last year. What was not down though – was the quality of the bikes on display. It never fails to impress me, how much time and effort our members make in the presentation of their motorcycles for the public display. on display but the common denominator – was the quality on display at the show. Every rally entrant can give themselves a big pat on the back – well done. On behalf of the Rally committee, I would like to thank the National Museum of Australia for their support over the past 2 National rallies. This venue is ideal, with plenty of area for the public display and the support tents and public parking available right next to the display. When you add the facilities available within the NMA itself – it is difficult to think of a better venue. The public display wrapped up around 3pm, at which point the rally entrants started to pack up and head back to Rally HQ. A few of us remained behind to pack up the displays before getting ready for the annual dinner and presentations. Saturday evening saw a great dinner enjoyed by all entrants. Due to losing a bet at a committee meeting some weeks before, the job of MC for the dinner was given to me. Thankfully I had some assistance from 2 of our committee members, Simon Whittaker and Ray Lalic – both seasoned professionals on the microphone. After dinner the awards and trophies were handed out. We also

had a great time with the raffles. I would like to thank our major sponsors at this point – Shannons and Dri Rider. Steve from Shannons was invited to say a few words to the crowd and Steve Hill from Canberra Motorcycle Centre accepted our thanks on behalf of DriRider jackets. The evening continued on for a number of hours with many rally entrants taking home a prize from the raffles. I think we ended up on an outside table making a whole lot of noise and drinking far too many bourbons, before pulling the pin at 1am. Up early again on Sunday for a nice breakfast, then the obligatory riders briefing before Sunday mornings rides. There were 2 rides happening on Sunday – one ride to Bungendore via some nice local roads, then the rides split at Bungendore with 1 group heading off on a longer ride via Tarago and Sutton, the other ride heading back to Rally HQ. The ride out to Bungendore was great – we had around 115 bikes on this ride. The pace was nice and relaxed so that everyone could get a good look at the beautiful countryside in this part of NSW. branch was set up at the main oval with morning tea. A perfect way to kick the morning off. After the break for morning smoko, the long ride proceeded to leave Bungendore. Thanks again to the local VVCMCC for providing the corner marshals for this ride and Lou for doing all the legwork for the ride routes – great job mate. The short ride departed Bungendore about 10 minutes later – heading back to Rally HQ via Smiths Gap and Macs Reef Road. The local drivers were very accommodating when they saw the large pack of bikes in their rear-view mirrors – moving over so that the pack could pass safely. Not too long after the short ride got back to Rally HQ, the long ride arrived. At this point, the rally entrants had completed all the schedule events for the weekend and the packing up began. A number of rally entrants from interstate were staying one extra night and departing on the Monday. All up – I reckon the 2016 Rally was a resounding success. It reflects both the hard yards put in by the local Rally committee as well as the efforts of all VJMC members from

many branches who attended the rally and put time and effort into the presentation of their bikes. There are a number of members of our local Rally committee who deserve special recognition for their efforts as follows: Phil Dawes – Phil has been the driving force behind both the 2015 and 2016 rallies and been a tower of strength in terms of his capacity to organise as well as his ability to get the committee focused and working as a cohesive team. Thanks for all your hard work behind the scenes mate, it has been a pleasure to work with you as part of the organising committee. Thanks also to Phil’s wife Pam Dawes, working on the Rally Registration desk at both the 2015 and 2016 rallies, to ensure that all the entrants have been organised from the time they arrived. Kathy Leslie - Kathy is one of those amazing rally secretaries/treasurers/ organisers that stands behind every successful rally. She singlehandedly sorted every rally entry as well as looking after the rally funds, dealing with the National treasurer – and many, many other jobs as only secretaries can do.

Kathy has been a massive asset to the organising committee and we can thank her for how well the rally administration has worked over the last 2 years. Love your work Kathy. Ray Lalic – Ray has been the go-to man for rally sponsorship for both rallies held here in Canberra. Over the 2 years he has managed to raise literally thousands of dollars of sponsorship to ensure that the rally can pay its way and raise a few bob for the National body as well as our own local branch. Thanks to Ray’s efforts, the ACT & Sthn NSW Branch now has a great basis on which to build our fundraising efforts over the next few years. Many thanks for all your hard work over the past 2 years mate. Simon Whittaker – Simon is the man behind the fantastic rally trophies that have been presented to trophy winners over the past 2 rallies. Simon also has more than a few tasty vintage bikes which

have won trophies at both rallies, he also has a big presence in the local café racer scene in Canberra. Thanks to the work done by Simon, a lot of VJMC members are now in possession of some of the best-looking trophies ever made for a VJMC rally. Well done Simon. Lou Baljak – Lou is our hard-working Ride coordinator. Thanks to Lou, our rally entrants in the last 2 years have seen a lot of Canberra that many tourists miss. The ride routes along the lake, as well as the country roads (2016 rally) and local Canberra roads (2015 rally) were wellresearched and provided the ideal ride routes where all the sights could be enjoyed at a relaxed and comfortable pace. Ian & Jen Stevens – Ian is our local branch Registrar and Jen is our Rally catering coordinator. Ian has worked really hard behind the scenes over the last 2 years to make sure that all the signage

for the rallies has been installed correctly – to make it easier for our interstate visitors to get around and find the rally sites without problems – we all know how hard Canberra can be to navigate if you don’t live here. Ian also ensures that the public display area has been set up correctly. Cheers buddy for a job well done. Jen Stevens is our Catering coordinator and for 2 years now has made sure that all the rally entrants have plenty of good tucker available. YOU MAY HAVE READ ABOUT THE 2015 JAPAN & SUZUKA 8-HOUR RACE TOUR IN RECENT ISSUES OF THE MAGAZINE. THE ARTICLES MAY HAVE INSPIRED YOU TO CONSIDER GOING ON A SIMILAR TOUR SHOULD ANOTHER ONE BE ARRANGED. WELL, THERE WILL BE ANOTHER ONE IN 2017! The Club has already been in email contact with those members who have their email addresses lodged with the Club, seeking expressions of interest, and the response has been fantastic. Expressions of interest aren’t binding on you, just some indication as to whether you’re mildly interested; interested; or, very interested. Or … “Take my money, I’m there!” interested – that would be really good. Commitment will come around February next year when deposits will need to be paid to our travel agents. Don’t hold off too long though, as I’ve said, response has been brilliant so far. So, if the idea
