AS I MENTIONED BEFORE THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE HAS PURCHASED PULL UP BANNERS AND GAZEBO’S FOR THOSE AREA REP’S WHO REQUESTED THEM ALONG WITH SOME THREE METRE STRIP BANNERS. THESE SHOULD HAVE BEEN DELIVERED TO THOSE REP’S BY NOW AND I HOPE THEY COME IN HANDY AT YOUR NEXT BIKE DISPLAY.
They stand out in a crowd and the Pull Up Banners tell the story of what our club is about. Talk with your local bike shop and see if you can put a couple of bikes on display outside their shop and set up the Pull Up Banner. Download some membership application forms o the website and have some of the VJMC business cards on hand to give out to prospective members. These are available from the Membership O cer. Don’t forget to wear your club Tee Shirt. The purchase of the Gazebo’s and their delivery was made much easier with the supplier arranging delivery too. I must say a big Thank You to “Tentworld-On-Line” in Toowoomba for their excellent service. Also a big “Thank You” must go to the team at Intertrade in the Brisbane suburb of Salisbury for their continued excellent service in the supply of the Pull Up and Strip Banners. They also arranged delivery to the various rep’s. This saves a lot of running around by our volunteer committee. Over the years we have had some members make some extraordinary long rides to get to the annual VJMC Rallies. I remember at the 2003 Rally in Morpeth on the Hunter River near Maitland NSW talking to a member who rode his Honda CB100 from Sydney via Mudgee. This would have been around 400 klms. Alan Watson rode his 1978 Honda CB750 from Brisbane to Healesville in Victoria with fellow member Steve Day who rode a more modern bike on the 1,800 klm trip. They arrived at Healesville around midnight on the Friday night. Wayne Lavers from Grenfell in

central western NSW completed a mammoth e ort in 2013 when he rode his mid 70’s Suzuki TS250 over 1,000 klms to the first Victor Harbor Rally in 2013. His cruising speed on the way over was 90kph however he had a tail wind on the way home which meant he could sit on 100kph. After the rally in Victor Harbor Wayne rode on to Adelaide (nearly 100 klms) to catch up with friends and then made the 1,100 klm ride back to Grenfell. In 2015 Brisbane members Tom McGrath (1966 Honda CB77 305cc), Chris Dupen ( 1971 Suzuki T350) and Terry Neilson (Suzuki T500) made a 1,200 klm trip to the Canberra Rally. They repeated the e ort in 2016 with Chris (1966 Kawasaki W650), Tom and Scott Abbett (70’s era Honda CX500’s) and Rod on a Yamaha TRX850. After the rally they rode on to Thredbo, Tumut and Gundagai on their way back to Brisbane. No doubt there is plenty of others who I didn’t know about but well done to you all. With the Tamworth VJMC rally coming up in the new year get your entries in early to be in the draw to win fuel vouchers up to $100. Good to see Brisbane member Ron Hewitt is still with us. Ron was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer which had also spread to the liver back in July and given one to two months to live. However they started him on chemotherapy and he has been working with a naturopath. Don’t know which one it is but the liver is now clear and the pancreatic cancer has reduced by 50 percent. Keep up the good work Ron. Keep Safe John McNair www.vjmc.org.au

SA MILANG RIDE The weekend of October 15th and 16th was a classic exhibition of the vagaries of our weather. One day was sunny with a northerly breeze and nearly 30 degrees and the other was cloudy and very wet with a top around 12 degrees. Guess which one was the ride day! Ten hardy souls gathered at Geoff’s house for a pancake breakfast and inspection of “The Institute”. Geoff has collected bikes for nigh on forty years and he has a wonderful collection based on his love for 250cc race bikes as well as for anything else that’s fast. The heavy rain kept us all
under cover so the planned ride was called off by a very popular vote. We are hoping that the warmer weather to come will produce some good riding days.
SA SEPT. RUN
BY: MICK G ODF R E Y
On a cool but dry day our intrepid ride leader Neville Gray and tailender Tom Osborne waited in vain at Kersbrook for any more members to join them on the Sub-250 ride north. They had a pleasant ride to Angaston where they were joined for lunch by Peter and Christine and Mick and Faye.
Perhaps it was the lure of the Bay to Birdwood (over 1000 entrants) on the same day or maybe the Distinguished Gentlemens Ride (which attracted over 400 riders) that kept everyone else away. However, as they say in the classic “The Show Must Go On” and we look forward to a better response for our next Sub-250 ride.

NOW AVAILABLE FROM TRI-SPARK If you want to have instant, trouble-free start up, rock steady ignition timing and a smooth idle on your classic motorcycle, FireBox Pro is the answer. With optional laptop adjustable settings, installation is simple and easy, often without needing to cut into the original wiring harness. The FireBox Pro also does away with the mechanical advance and retard mechanism making it more versatile and reliable than other systems that retain this function. With FireBox Pro the timing will be spot on leading to increased horsepower and a smoother ride. It all adds up to a great result.
Suitable for Honda, MotoGuzzi, BMW, Ducati, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Vincent and Velocette.

TRI STATE RALLY BY: MICH A EL G ODF R E Y
ON AUGUST 27TH AND 28TH THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN AREA HELD ANOTHER GET-TOGETHER IN BERRI ON THE MURRAY RIVER. The Tri-State Rally was centred at the Riverside Caravan Park at Berri and there was over thirty riders from SA, Mildura and Broken Hill meeting up in beautiful weather starting with a BBQ lunch on the Saturday and then a short ride to take part in the Riverland Auto Expo near Barmera. The Saturday evening meal at the Berri Resort Hotel was attended by over three dozen rallygoers and during the course of the evening the trophies were awarded - one to Sam Muscat for riding his Kawasaki 650/4 from Broken Hill and the other

being the Organisers Choice that went to Dave Ward and his Honda 900 Bol’d’or. Sunday was a cooked breakfast at the caravan park and riders headed home. It was a very enjoyable and relaxed event for the attendees and we look forward to next year when it will be centred in Mildura. Our thanks go to Simon and Raelene Jackson for once again organising the event, along with their willing helpers Ashley and Sylvia Clark. The ride from Adelaide was led by Mike Walker.

SA CLASSIC AT HART Although the VJMC did not have an official showing at the Classics at Hart motorcycle display held during mid October, there were quite a few
Japanese machines in evidence. The display was to be a line-up of machines from 1900 to 2000 and a good representation of marques was presented.
ROTARY EXPO BY: MICH A EL G ODF R E Y
On November 20th the SA members had a stand at the Rotary Club Motorcycle Expo and Swap meet at the primary school oval in Lockleys. Unfortunately, although we and other stallholders turned up, not many public did. However, it was a reasonable morning and we gave out quite a few of our information packs. www.vjmc.org.au
The highlight of the morning was a demonstration of a new type of hi-viz riding vest that includes an airbag that grips the head in case of an accident. Weird! My thanks to our members who supported this event and we hope that the organisers will learn the error of their ways next time and advertise the event. VINTAGE JAPANESE MOTORCYCLE CLUB

INAUGUR AL VJMC
SA TRAIL RIDE BY: TOM OSBOU R N E
IT TURNED OUT TO BE A MOST BEAUTIFUL DAY AS SIX INTREPID RIDERS AND ONE TRAIL VIRGIN GATHERED AT TOM OSBORNE’S PLACE IN AUGUST.
There were bikes from the early seventies right up to a modern WR450 Yamaha. A little pre ride fettling went on as we prepared bikes for the mammoth task ahead of them. Setting off we made a quick pit stop at the Kersbrook fuel dump and a pre ride chat; don’t fall off! And into the wilds we went. The first stage was a small hill climb and a jolly jaunt across the hill top, over a small water crossing and onto the next stage. This involved an open track, shortly followed by an uphill single trail

into a slippery downhill section and some close trees. All made it safely. Onto an open dirt road and some bitumen for a few kilometres and back into the single trail and rough fire track. On the way we had a quick stop at an old enduro / motocross track by the road side, before a bit more open road and a splash through a couple of water crossings. Then it was time to hit the boggy stuff! Which we all did with gay abandon and none of us fell off. Although I did manage to briefly drown the

TS250. Lucky I have two spark plugs. Well done to Roy and John on their smaller bikes, perfectly suited to the terrain. And Darwin, never been off road before, on a ’76 DT250. We stopped for a breather on the Mt Pleasant Rd turn off, at Warren Reservoir and then onto a quick trail and headed to Williamstown. I think we were all getting hungry. Stopping for lunch, we found the Go Pro had not recorded anything, so the only thing to do was ride some more trail, which of course we did. This time it worked. All in all a successful day, made better by the company we all rode in. Lots of mud and smiles all round. I believe our trail virgin had a ball and never fell off, although Mick Bulman reported a close call. A big thank you to all who came. Looking forward to next time.....

Standard fixtures such as the monthly gathering at the Grandview Hotel Fairfield were well represented despite some wet and very cold nights. Two events of note on these nights were: • Christmas in July – collecting clothing items and special treats for the group’s charity – the Avalon Centre. The centre aims to meet unmet needs and to offer a helping hand to people who have been forgotten, overlooked or left behind. Thank you also to the many generous sponsors of the raffle prizes allowing a cash donation to be made as well. • Jeff Eeles tribute night where the group was able to recognise and celebrate Jeff’s contribution to establishing the group many years ago, supporting, encouraging and enabling the members to enjoy each other’s company and vintage Japanese motorcycles. Thank you to Tim Royall for arranging a remarkable unique plaque acknowledging Jeff’s contribution. Ride participation by VJMC members continued despite the variable weather to support various causes for example: www.vjmc.org.au
ultiple Sclerosis ride around Port M Phillip Bay – 31st July - a charity ride for motorcyclists to raise funds for multiple sclerosis (MS) research. • Beaumaris Concourse Car & Bike Show – 11th September – charity car and motorcycle display in aid of the local Rotary organisation. • Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride Sunday 25 September – organised ride event in aid of men’s health. • C lassic Motorcycle Display West Ivanhoe - Sunday 25 September – a family day fund raiser event. Established calendar events such as Greg Costello’s regular monthly mid week rides and other local groups monthly gatherings continued. Greg’s ride continued like a well oiled machine despite his extended overseas adventure thank you to other members who took over the lead. •
Thank you to all event organisers and contributors to the Melbourne Metro Forum and VJMC Calendar to keep members and new arrivals involved in their passion. VINTAGE JAPANESE MOTORCYCLE CLUB

SOUTH EAST QUEENSLAND

SUMMER IS COMING! SOME HOT DAYS ARE STARTING TO APPEAR IN SOUTH-EAST QUEENSLAND. TO PREVENT THE PAINT FROM BLISTERING OFF OF OUR TANKS (UNPLEASANT) AND TO STOP OUR EYEBALLS FROM EVAPORATING (DESIRABLE), THE SEQ VJMC MEMBERS TRIED SOMETHING DIFFERENT: AVOID THE SUN ALTOGETHER!
Ten bikes gathered at our usual monthly-meeting spot, the Belmont Tavern, at about 5:00pm on October 9th. The intention was to travel to the Co ee Club in Wellington Point for an evening chat and dinner together, enjoying the cool of the evening. This seemed a great idea, until it was pointed out as we were leaving that there isn’t actually a Co ee Club at Wellington Point. No problem, we’re adaptable people. The group instead took a leisurely ride to Wynnum and rode down to Cleveland along the coast, soaking up the evening light as the sun set. What a great little ride! We ended up sitting around outside the Lighthouse Café at Cleveland Point, eating fish and chips and generally just having a great time. The weather was, simply put, perfect. Try evening rides out, folks, familiar roads look di erent and it puts a di erent spin on things. You know when you go on a ride with friends and everyone comments that it just feels right? This was one of those times. What else has been going on? Well, the club put on a great Laverda Concours display again this year, and President John McNair was able to add another trophy to our silverware cabinet for Best Club Display. Our theme this year was ‘The Evolution of the Two-Stroke in Japan’, the stand being suitably decked out in all manner of tasty two-strokes, cutaway engines, posters and display stands. Man, did we have a selection: Suzuki RG500, Yamaha RZ500, Honda NS400R, Kawasaki H2, Suzuki T500, Yamaha DS6, Yamaha CS2, Honda MVX250, and that’s not all www.vjmc.org.au
of the bikes we had there! To top it o and prove a point (still not certain exactly what point though), we managed to start and rev just about everything on the stand simultaneously. The noise was glorious, the pollution staggering, the fuel and oil consumption notable, grown men wept for the memory of earlier days, and I’m pretty certain that any bikes that were on the surrounding stands are now protected from rust. In other news, we rode out to Toorbul for breakfast just this last Sunday gone (23rd October). The weather looked pretty dire that day, but three members gathered at Carseldine Caltex nonetheless, meeting up with two more at Wamuran. We stuck to the back roads and avoided any rain (miraculously), taking the opportunity to ride the nicely sweeping Pumicestone Passage Road to Toorbul and the local tavern. There, we met with some members of the Sunshine Coast group, and had a good chat and pretty decent breakfast. Toorbul is a nice spot for those who haven’t been, very quiet and overlooking the Pumicestone Passage between Bribie Island and the mainland. A reminder of what the area was like in bygone days, and not a far-flung location either. By the time you read this, folks, Christmas will be nearly upon us. I wish you and your families all the best for the festive season, ride safe, and come and join us on the second Tuesday of every month at the Belmont Tavern in the New Year!

HELLO THERE AND GREETINGS TO YOU ALL FROM NORTH WEST NSW! AS SPRING DRAWS TO A CLOSE THE NATIONAL RALLY AT TAMWORTH IS NOW LESS THAN FOUR MONTHS AWAY. OVER THE PAST YEAR OUR GROUP HAS BEEN BEAVERING AWAY TO GET THE EVENT ORGANIZED. AT THIS STAGE WE HAVE PRETTY MUCH GOT THE EVENT VENUES, RIDE DESTINATIONS, PRESENTATION DINNER AND THE TAKE AWAY SOUVENIRS SORTED AND ARE CURRENTLY ENGAGED IN ADDING THOSE DETAIL TOUCHES THAT WILL MAKE YOUR VISIT TO TAMWORTH A MEMORABLE ONE. As any previous Rally organizer will tell you, one of the key hurdles is trying to estimate how many participants will be in attendance. So far we have six or seven paid entries in and it looks like we might be able to hold it in my back yard.... But seriously though, I do understand that most of us tend to put o entering rallies, or other events, until the last minute, just in case of changes or until we can locate our round tuit. So, in an e ort to counter that, NATCOM are proud to announce that entries received by close of business, December 24th (that’s correct, Christmas Eve) will go into a draw for one of two $100 fuel vouchers. Those received by the entry cut-o date, February 3rd, will be in a draw for one of two $50 fuel vouchers, the winners will be announced at the Rally Dinner. So best get cracking and put your entry in for the chance to win free fuel at Tamworth. While you’re at it you might want to consider getting your accommodation booked. Rally Central, The Paradise Tourist Park, is handily located at the southern end of Peel Street, which just happens to be Tamworth’s main drag and is
close to the highway by-pass, retail outlets, fuel stops, a variety of dining options and of course bottle shops. Paradise Tourist Park has a variety of accommodation options ranging from luxury cabins to tent sites but I understand they have so far taken quite a few bookings for the Rally week end, so I’d get cracking with organizing yours as well. http://www.paradisetouristpark.com.au/ We also have a number of accommodation sponsors, most of which are in the same precinct as Rally Central, their details are on page six of the entry form, which you’ll find here: http://vjmc.org. au/j30/images/Fliers/ TamRallyForm_2017.pdf or in hard copy form in this newsletter. If you are on the club’s website keep a look out for Rally updates, or feel free to contact the organizers, listed on the entry form and flyer, if we can be of any help. See you in Tamworth! Paul.

BABY BLUE A CHA NCE PURCHASE LED TO THE RESTOR ATION OF A LOW-MILEAGE 1970 CB100
BASILE SEPSAKOS ONLY MEANT TO SELL A BIKE PART, NOT PICK UP A PROJECT IN THE PROCESS. A VJMC MEMBER FROM MELBOURNE, BASILE WAS TRYING SELL A CAFÉ RACERSTYLE HANDLEBAR ON EBAY. THE POTENTIAL BUYER WANTED THE BARS FOR A 1970 HONDA CB100 THAT NEEDED A LOT OF LOVE AND MECHANICAL WORK.

“We talked for a while and he explained its history and incredibly low genuine mileage of 538km,” Basile says. “I convinced him not to buy my handlebars and keep the bike true to its genuine condition. I did myself out of a sale!” Basile even offered to buy the bike but he owner wanted to keep it. “I said if he changed his mind to call me.” Sure enough, about three months later, the bike was on its way to Basile’s place by road transport. “I received the bike and it was in much worse condition than I expected. It had been very poorly stored and required a lot of work. “I got it started after replacing the fuel tap, changing the oil and plug but it didn’t run very well and then stopped. “I stripped the carby down, but it still wouldn’t run very well and stopped. He turned to a local mechanic (Ivan at Pablos Motorcycles in Melbourne) who diagnosed a problem with one of the valves. “He encouraged me to remove the head myself and said it was easy and a good learning exercise www.vjmc.org.au
for me. I took his advice as I am somewhat mechanically minded have built car engines in my youth and took the motor off and stripped the top part of the motor and gave the head to Ivan with a new valve and guide who replaced and reseated it. “Given the cylinder was off I honed the bore and replaced the ring and put the motor back together. “Ivan was right, it wasn’t that hard, and a lot of fun. Basile rates Ivan’s work highly and has some good advice for novice restorers. “I’d encourage anyone to build a good rapport with a good mechanic. He is old school with deep experience and knowledge. He can custom engineer almost any part. I learnt a lot from Ivan and he helped greatly with advice so I could do as much of the work as possible myself.” Even then, Basile hadn’t really expected to fully restore the bike. “But as I removed one part it exposed issues with the next part and before I knew it, I had the bike stripped back to the frame! “I powder coated the frame and a few other bits VINTAGE JAPANESE MOTORCYCLE CLUB

such as the air filter (which came up brand new!) and slowly restored each part and put the bike back together. Here’s a list of jobs: • Plastic weld a small hole on top of the seat • Buy a new genuine exhaust from ebay – expensive! • Buy lots of new screws/bolts/gaskets/ mudflap (expensive), mirrors • New badges “There was lots of elbow grease involved too!” A friend’s enthusiastic 15-year-old son was drafted in for a day to clean and prepare parts, even helping put the motor back together. “I had new rear shockers custom built by Ikon shockers thinking the original ones were no good, and while the Ikon ones are much better, I could probably have got away with the original ones. “ The original exhaust was a bit pitted and rusted, so it was pearl coated by Jet Hot Coatings (Melbourne) and while it was a good job, Basile wasn’t happy with the finish so he bought new, and expensive, muffler. “The shockers and pearl coating were two material costs I could have avoided – you learn!” The wheels were rebuilt by Lightfoot Engineering in Mont Albert - the only parts on the bike which are not original are the wheel rims and spokes. The spokes were custom-made stainless steel and the rims were ordered from Japan. The paintwork was done in a local paint shop but the tank had to be done twice as the first time the shape of the top white stripe did not match the original paintwork, the curve was too sharp and not a gradual one. “Before painting the tank I chemically stripped it (great idea) for $40 and rubbed it back hard to bare metal. I also chemically cleaned and stripped the internal of the tank. It did not need to be relined.” The chroming and polishing was performed by a few people and businesses. “Once I had the bike back together I had problems with carby which caused it not to run or run poorly.
32
VINTAGE JAPANESE MOTORCYCLE CLUB
“I stripped it down countless times, put a kit through it and cleaned it many difference ways and even dropped it into my wife’s ultrasonic jewellery cleaner which wasn’t a popular move! Basile finally took it to Ivan the mechanic. In the end two things caused the problem. The carby face and carby flange were slightly warped causing an air leak which need to be machined, and there was still some build-up in the carby which cleaned way after multiple sessions in Ivan’s commercial ultrasonic machine. The day I had it running well was the day of my inaugural ride to a VJMC club meeting on a beautiful evening. It was a great ride and to finally be able to smell the roses of a year’s long work. It was very rewarding and a lot of fun to have restored this bike. The blue beauty, which took about 12 months to restore, is Basile’s second CB100 to go with his gold classic, bought in 2013. “It was a great bike which required almost no work and was about 70% factory condition.” Basile used to ride in his late teens to early 20s but didn’t ride again until reaching his 40s. Then his brother James, the club’s Melbourne metro rep, bought a red 1972 CB125 twin. Brothers on CBs! “I was awed by the colour and shiny chrome. I took it for a ride around the block and got the bug – what was I missing all these years!” “This was my first every restoration and I learnt a lot, had heaps of fun and make some expensive mistakes along the way.” Basile is now working on a restoration of a 1972 Honda CB350 twin. “Not sure I’ll go the full hog! But I have the itch.”

WANNA RACE? ARTICLE & PICS BY RAY NELSON
MY NAME IS RAY NELSON AND FUN FOR ME IS RACING MY OLD VINTAGE JAPANESE MOTORCYCLE. I HAVE A HIGHLY MODIFIED T20 SUZUKI, WHICH IS NOW A REPLICA OF A TR250 RACE BIKE. (GOOGLE TR250 SUZUKI) It suits me, is fast enough, handles well and has helped me win a few trophies over the years. I’m not a front runner, more a back marker, but that suits me. I was a late starter into racing, beginning 6 or so years ago, I’m 65 now so I am not a spring chicken either. So, here are some tips, hints and associated information if you are interested in going Historic racing. A lot of this information has been gained from attending race meetings, helping people and being helped by others. I hope I can help you too.
34
VINTAGE JAPANESE MOTORCYCLE CLUB
Check out PCRA.com.au website for tips on getting started and become a financial member of a club in your state that runs Historic race meetings. Also the Motorcycling Australia website for documentation (licence, logbook, racing numbers etc). In NSW go to the Motorcycling NSW website (For NSW riders) or your state authority. 1. Type of bike, class and bike preparation 2. Equipment (leathers etc.) 3. What to take (fuel, oil, parts) 4. Circuits (Gearing, facilities) 5. Other important stu .
www.vjmc.org.au
WA N NA R ACE?
1. TYPE OF BIKE, CLASS AND BIKE PREPARATION. Decide on what size bike you want to ride. The make of bike is your choice, as long as you can get parts for it. It could be a tiddler, 80-100/125/150cc, mid-sized, 250/350/500cc, biggies, 600/750/900cc to unlimited. Decide on what class/period (engine size) you want to race in, bearing in mind your experience or lack thereof and where your bike fits in. I race in P4-250cc (1966-72). When we race we also have other classes in the mix, sometimes smaller faster bikes are in there, it can get hairy out there at times. At the moment there is a lack of bikes in my period/engine size at the club level, however at a national level there are quite a few. G.C. Regs from MA may help here as they are also your guide to bike preparation. Read everything carefully and comply fully as you will not get on track otherwise! TIPS: If you think it might break (eg, Exhaust brackets) then make it bigger, thicker etc. - If you think it might fall off, lock wire it. Nylock nuts, lock nuts, thread sealant – all are applicable. There is nothing worse than having a footrest, brake pedal, gear lever etc. fall off. Embarrassment and danger reigns supreme!! - Adequate fuel in the tank: having run of fuel once is an acute embarrassment, maybe develop a dipstick system or just add 1-2 litres after each race which is what I do.

2. EQUIPMENT - Get your gear on!! Leathers, Gloves, Boots etc. - Think safety here, yours in particular. Again what you have to wear is in the MA General Competition Rules and Regulations. - L eathers – can be one or two piece, two piece is handy if it is hot, ie; think about a Wakefield Park day when the temperature is 36 degrees in February. - Helmet – must be in good condition and have a Standards approved sticker (AS1698) - Gloves and Boots – all must be in good condition. You must also have a back protector unless your leathers have one built in. NOTE: all equipment will be inspected at scrutineering, so do not try to fudge it, it is your body out there. TIP: make sure all your gear is comfortable. Also get yourself a set of ‘lycra skins’ for under your leathers, makes it easier to get leathers on and o if you do not a female Crew Chief (wife) to help you. Remember, if you come o , good equipment helps – missing fingers etc. aren’t not much fun. 3. WHAT TO TAKE? If you think you need to take something in particular, just take it! (Spare engines are optional) I have a check list that I refer to, one side is bike stuff, the other side is personal stuff - more on this later. I try to pack everything into plastic crates/tubs and then pack easily into the car/ trailer toolbox. Tools: A toolbox with tools/spanners that suit your bike, enough said. Don’t forget extra lock wire, duct tape, electrical tape, tyre pump and pressure gauge. Fuel: Take your own and enough of it. If you use Avgas, Methanol, ULP98 or whatever, it’s not normally available trackside. Lubricants: Oils, sprays, chain lube, degreaser, aerostart. Brake fluid, (if your bike uses it) carby cleaner, contact cleaner, hand cleaner and some clean rags. It seems like overkill but it saves time walking around asking to borrow things.
36
VINTAGE JAPANESE MOTORCYCLE CLUB
A nut and bolt assortment kit, cable ties, soldering iron & solder and a hot air gun may all come in handy. TIP: For small things a fisherman’s tackle box with multiple compartments is handy. Nuts, bolts, clamps & clips, never go astray. Electrical equipment: Extension leads, power boards, double adaptors, as you may have power tools, generator, compressor or starter rollers which may need power. TIP: If you need power, even to boil up a cuppa, check to see if the pit area has power outlets. Some do not, e.g. Eastern creek South Circuit. 4. CIRCUITS: MANY & VARIED. If you have a National license you can race anywhere. See where your club of choice races the most at. Think about the distance from home to the track, fuel costs to get there and back, accommodation, food, entry fees etc. Caravan park cabins can be cheaper than Motels and you can cook your own meals, some also give discounts if you are a member of their club E.g. Big 4 gives !0% Club meetings are cheaper than National meetings and usually are one day only, National championships can be up to 4 days so costs add up. How to learn the tracks: Go there, enter and take it easy, talk to people, ask questions, ride to the limit of your skills and above all, enjoy yourself. Once you are confident with yourself and your bike, take a note of your lap times compared to others in the same class (I keep all my timing sheets). You may consider gearing changes to better suit short and long circuits. Consider tyre pressures for different weather conditions. If it is wet and you don’t like the rain, consider whether you will practice/race. Learn corner entry and exit points, o camber corners and pit entry and exit points. Important points for Race Day: (a) Sign on-O cials know you’re there. Get your transponder when they are available and remember to return it at the end of the day otherwise it will cost you hundreds of dollars (like $500). www.vjmc.org.au
WA N NA R ACE?
(b) Attend Riders’ briefing (compulsory fines apply). If you have not ridden at a particular track and the question is asked, put your hand up. You may be required to wear a Hi-Viz vest. If so wear it with pride, you are out there at last! Sign o against your name and bike number at the end of the briefing. (c) Always stay on your line, faster riders will go around you. I know I get lapped often enough. Learn what the flags are and mean and obey them at all times. (d) Practice some starts or if necessary start from the back of the grid. Starting positions are usually posted on sheets at the Control Tower. TIP – note down your position and write it on some duct tape on your bike tank. Keep it simple; eg: Row 4, Position 28, L M R (ie; left middle or right side). Check the track markings as nobody likes to be kept waiting. Track Marshalls try to help. Starting: – going around is OK, but getting away from the line on a cranky 2 stroke is an art in itself. Imagine if you can, 30 plus riders all trying to get away and jockeying for position for the first corner. Scary Stu !! The occasional nudge may occur, but it keeps you focussed. Pick your
www.vjmc.org.au
route/line or hang back. (e) Ask other riders about certain tracks. Eastern Creek can be three di erent circuits. Not all on the same day thankfully. TIP – Eastern Creek South Circuit has no pit garages, hence no shade. It also has no power available – so you need a Generator if you need access to power. Broadford circuit in Victoria has one particularly tricky o - camber corner. The list goes on! (f) Get a programme to see what events/races you are in and mark them with a highlighter pen and then cross them o once that race is finished. Also you can note whether your races are scheduled to follow sidecars etc and then once they have done 4 out of their 5 laps you know you need to get ready, such as put your gear on, get your bike warmed up etc. This makes it easier to keep up with where things are at. Don’t leave getting ready till the 30 second horn goes o as you may end up starting from Pitt lane – Shame on you!!. TIP – Again for some of your early races you may want to start from the back of the grid and you can see how the start works.

5. OTHER STUFF Live a long way from the track? Book some accommodation close to the track, it sure beats getting up at 3.00am to get to the track by 6.30 am. Caravan Park cabins are good as you can cook for yourself and save on meals. If unsure of what’s close to the track, do some internet searches, or go to the track on a non-race weekend and check around the area to see what is near there. TIP: Eating at the track- sometimes chips and burgers may not sit well when racing We take our own food 7 water, and I have seen people with toasters, sandwich makers, electric skillets etc. NOTE: Gas barbeques are NOT ALLOWED in the pit area. Your personal checklist may include: Electric jug, tea, co ee, milk, sugar, small table and chairs, cooking utensils if you cook, even hangers for clothes/leathers. The list can be endless! Hats, warm clothes, wet weather gear, sun screen and insect repellent are some things to consider. My list is comprehensive, but I don’t have to beg, borrow or buy things and it makes for a stressfree day! TIP: Once you become familiar with race days and people you may be able to share the costs of a
38
VINTAGE JAPANESE MOTORCYCLE CLUB
pit garage, every little bit saved helps. Bike related “stuff” : Side or rear stand : Roller starters, handy for starting those cranky 2 strokes. : Generator (if needed) and don’t forget the fuel. : A good trailer suited to bikes, nothing worse than a bike damaged in transit, remember you may only have an hour or so after arriving at the track before your bike (and you) have to pass scrutineering. : A good ramp, (or a very strong wife or mate) Don’t rely on other people, everybody else is trying to get unloaded as well. TIP: Don’t bust a gut unloading, find an easy way to do it. : Be early, parking is often very tight. : If you are staying in a Hotel/Motel/Caravan Park overnight, I always cover my bike and lock everything into or onto the trailer - trust nobody. : Be courteous to all o cials even if YOU are running late, abuse will not be tolerated and you can be excluded from the meeting. Last but not least! Have a great day of racing and enjoy yourself. www.vjmc.org.au
