PRESIDENTS REPORT

AS A CHILD I HAD HAD RIDES ON SMALL MOTORBIKES MOSTLY TR AIL BIKES BUT WAS SIXTEEN BEFORE I PURCHASED MY FIRST BIKE. THAT MIGHTY MACHINE WAS A MID SIXTIES SECONDHAND HONDA 50 STEPTHRU. I MANAGED TO EXPLORE MANY OF THE BACK ROADS AROUND COWR A IN CENTR AL WESTERN NSW AND EVEN VENTURED OVER TO COOTAMUNDR A FOR A VISIT TO MY COUSINS PL ACE. Following a move to Sydney in 1969 I made the move up to a new Honda CB250 on which I made many trips home to Cowra on a Friday night after work and then back to Sydney on Sunday after lunch. This was about a 300klm trip each way and it was a bit cold in the winter over the blue mountains. Don’t know where all the kangaroos were then but I never seen any. The 250 was later traded in on a new CB450 and later a CB500/4 followed by my CB750/4 in March 1974. Still got that old girl. It was then that I got involved in the Motorcycle Club scene joining up with the Four Owners Club in late 71 or early 72. This club was based in Sydney and was created with the release of the Honda CB750 around 1970 but later included all four cylinder machines. It wasn’t long before the club had branches in Canberra, Melbourne, Kempsey and Brisbane along with Sydney. This opened up the opportunity for me to meet some wonderful fellow motorcyclists from four states. We had many rides to Kempsey and Canberra and even some after work rides to Melbourne on the Friday night for a party or some other event staying in a big caravan at a members house in Templestowe Melbourne then ride home on Sunday morning. I remember having over 50 people at my place in Sydney for a Pre Six Hour Race Party with a butt of beef on a spit. Among the guests were members from all four state branches in town for the next day’s Castrol Six Hour Race at the now defunct Amaroo Park Raceway. Several of us rode to Brisbane one year in the early 70’s and caught up with the Brisbane members before heading over to Point Lookout on Stradbroke Island. Will never forget that road from Amity to Point Lookout. It was really badly corrugated and had several patches of deep sand. A nice ride now on the sealed road. We also caught up with our fellow members at our National Four Owners Rallies which were held every two years in various locations central to Brisbane www.vjmc.org.au

and Melbourne along with halfway rides to meet up. One of these was a great weekend in Tumut with Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne attending. With all of us having a common interest I made some great friends over those years and during a recent three state road trip I was able to catch up with some of these friends most of which I have kept in contact with and one whom I hadn’t seen since the 70’s but in each case it was as though that time gap wasn’t there. Each of these people are still riding or riding again. One of them, Ole in Canberra, I met in 1972 likewise Geoff near Bodalla on the beautiful south coast of NSW I have known since 1974. Ian in Nelson Bay I have known since the early 80’s and Kim in Wingham since the late 70’s. A few years ago I heard from Matt an ex Canberra Four Owners member who now lives in Tinonee near Taree on the NSW mid north coast. We got to catch up with him on the way home too and it didn’t matter that we hadn’t seen each other in over 40 years we had a great catch up. Some of the numbers in his street were a bit hard to read however Cheryl spotted some bikes in a garage and said “That will be it. I don’t think you know anyone with only one bike in his shed”. And yes it was the house we were looking for. Through the VJMC National Rallies I have caught up with several other ex Four Owners Club members including Kathy and Ron in Canberra, Ron and Colin in Melbourne and John in Tamworth. I think it would be fair to say that a lot of great people ride motorcycles and I feel fortunate to have met up with a lot of them over the years but the wonderful thing is that I am still meeting up with great riders in this club every year. Looking forward to seeing several of them at the 2020 National Rally in Toowoomba. Ride safe. John McNair President VINTAGE JAPANESE MOTORCYCLE CLUB

GROUP RIDE

ALTHOUGH IT WAS A BIT HOT IT WAS EXCELLENT WEATHER FOR THE RIDE UP TO THE BLACKTOP MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM IN ESK. Unfortunately we found out just before the ride that the museum is only open Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings so we decided to make a round trip to Esk anyway. Nice to see Adrian who was a guest at our previous Tuesday night meeting join us for the ride. Also there were John & Cheryl (Honda CB750 K7), Graeme & Ruth (Yamaha550), Terry (Kawasaki 900Z1A), Ken (Kawasaki 550) and also Ken Knight joined us for the ride as far as the Somerset turn off on his Suzuki GS1100GK. A few minutes after the departure time the six bikes with eight people left the Puma Garage at Dinmore and headed west on the Warrego Hwy and took the Marburg Exit where we turned right under the highway onto the MarburgLowood Rd which took us to Glamorganvale and

along a really nice twisty road that climbs up over a range with commanding views over the Brisbane River and the village of Lowood. From Lowood we headed east to the Brisbane Valley Hwy at Fernvale where a left turn had us riding north on the Hwy for just a few kilometres before turning onto theWivenhoe-Somerset Road which traverses the eastern side of Wivenhoe Dam . This road climbs to a high point near Splityard Creek Dam from which water flows to a hydro plant several hundred metres below. This also is a spot that gives magnificent views across the dam but unfortunately there is no place to stop. The ride from here to Somerset offered several views

across the vast Wivenhoe Dam. Although it was dry it’s still a nice ride up through here. Just after we crossed the Stanley River we turned left to Esk while Ken Knight left us here and turned right to head up to Kilcoy for a family visit. On the way to Esk we crossed the almost empty Brisbane River before joining the Brisbane Valley Hwy for the short ride into Esk. The Esk Bakery was our lunch stop with everyone enjoying a nice relaxing time with good food and a good chat. From Esk it was an easy ride back down through Fernvale onto the Warrego Highway home.

BUSHFIRE APPEAL

AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRES APPEAL R IDE DAY 12/1/2020

ALMOST EVERYBODY WILL HAVE HEARD ABOUT THE DEVASTATING BUSH FIRES THAT ARE R AGING ALL ACROSS AUSTR ALIA. So the nice folks at West Coast Customs organised a “ride” in order to raise much needed funds to give some relief to the folks in affected areas. About 800+ people on bikes (mainly Harleys & some custom cars) gathered in the allotted starting spot, all contributing $20 each to the cause. There was a great deal of commeraderie going on as various groups sorted themselves out. Several members of the West Australian branch of VJMC were in attendance on their trusty Jap bikes & as the ride departed, we went for our own gathering at a local coffee shop. As the dust settled the amount raised was $16,600 with further pledges still to come. Ian Curtis #A4171 www.vjmc.org.au

RUST Y TANK R E PA I R WELL WE HAVE ALL HEARD STORIES FROM SOMEONE SAYING YEAH I KNOW A GUY WHO CAN REPAIR BIKES OR PAINT TANKS OR RESTORE MOTORCYCLES. WELL THIS IS ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE STORIES I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH ALL MEMBERS. I recently purchased a 2014 Honda cb500x with a mere 245 klms on the clock. I have owned one of these bikes before and regretted selling it on many occasions, so when the chance came up to purchase a later model than I previously owned with little klms on it at a great price I jumped at it as at the age of 65 this was going to be my last motorcycle purchase. Something I have said many times over the years. The bike was in a car showroom on the mid north coast and the owner was selling off all of his vehicles to retire. The story behind the bike was that two friends each bought one of these motorcycles at the same time to go riding together but on their first ride one of them came to grief and his bike was written off. It was then that they decided that they would never ride again. I travelled to the dealership to view the bike and it was obvious it was still new although it was completely covered in dust as it had been sitting in the corner of the showroom for some four years as the owner had plans of hooking it up to the rear of his van but due to the weight that plan was cancelled.

www.vjmc.org.au

He managed to get the bike to run although I pleaded with him not to due to the fact that the fuel would be so old but after much cranking she fired up and idled fine. After what I thought to be a thorough inspection of the bike, a purchase price was agreed on, and I left to travel back home only to come back the next day with the trailer. Knowing that I would need to replace all the fluids I also decided to syphon the remainder of fuel from the tank that had been sitting in it for so long. Imagine my dismay when I removed the fuel cap and saw the enormous amount of rust that had collected in the new tank over such a small amount of time. Never have I purchased a bike without looking into the tank first but a near new bike??? Who would have thought. It was Chris Watson Motorcycles from Cessnock N.S.W. who put me onto a firm in Asquith called “Collide A Scope Motorcycles’’. Having cleaned and sealed tanks before I wanted this one done by an expert as I want this bike to last me a long time. I removed all the covers and the tank from the bike

VINTAGE JAPANESE MOTORCYCLE CLUB

11

RUS T Y TA N K R EPA IR

and after removing the fuel pump I could not believe the amount of rust flakes around the strainer/ filter. I visited the premises at Asquith with tank in hand and was met by the owner Lawrence Hughes. Telling him I was a VJMC member he was kind enough to give me a complete introduction of his premises where they perform anything in the form of repairing motorcycles, repairing and painting tanks, servicing, rebuilds, full spray job and machining, just about everything including designing and printing of tank or side cover decals which are available to see on their web site. Lawrence has been running collide a scope motorcycles for some 21 years now with the last 10 of those years now at his larger premises. He is a master at many things, being certified in such things as motorcycle mechanic, panel beater, sheet metalworker and spray painter, and being famous for his ability to colour match. Not only does he hold an incredible skills bank but he has extremely good people skills and is very easy to talk to and very helpful as well. His

12

VINTAGE JAPANESE MOTORCYCLE CLUB

workshop holds a different array of machinery and one piece of that is dear to his heart being a very large shaping hammer, as it was owned by his uncle in London, and when he passed away Lawrence travelled to London to bring it to Australia and at the time he viewed it after all those years ago there lying beside it on the workshop floor was a piece of sheet metal that he had worked on at the age of 17 and he still has that same piece of metal to this day in his workshop. After he had inspected the inside of my tank he told me it was not as bad as I thought but he is seeing a lot more of this lately in later model bikes due to poorer steel in the tanks and the unleaded fuels we use these days. So regardless of the situation you are up to with your restoration if you need your tank cleaned, repaired, painted or whatever you can’t go past Lawrence at “Collide A Scope Motorcycles”. We outgrew our designated area very quickly with the overwhelming support from members so we just kept expanding forward, keep off the cricket pitch was the word, so we lined either side of it making it look like an airstrip. Quite a blustery day overall with the sun poking through for part of the day, encouraged the general crowd attendance, up again on the previous year, where we signed up a few new members on the day, along with membership renewals and Historic Rego plus fielding a lot of general interest enquiries.

MACCLESFIELD RUN

This is the 3rd year for the Macclesfield Bike Show and it just keeps getting bigger and better, both from the perspective of Clubs and Organisations putting on displays, to the number of people attending. Many nice bikes on display from most manufacturers, with a few newly finished winter projects also. Come judging time and Allister Green won best Japanese Bike with his 1973 Kawasaki Z1 900, other awards were for Best American, Italian, German, British and “Other” which was taken out by a strange wine barrel slatframed 2-stroke creation (not registrable). We also took out the Best Display, no doubt with the quantity and definitely the quality of our bikes on display, with the shield being presented to Mick Godfrey, ours for another year. The whole group then rode to the private collection of Eric Parker in Nuriootpa. This is a huge gathering of Chevrolet cars through the years. The is also a huge collection of Ariel motorcycles with the most Square Fours (50?) you will see in one place. After viewing the first two sheds we were led up to his other site where another two sheds awaited us. It was a very interesting visit and most went away shaking their heads at the immensity of it all. Michael Godfrey

Kyle had always wanted to chop up a bike and transform a classic into a modern Japanese cafe racer, fit for the streets of Melbourne. It was a massive job that was not made any easier by the fact Kyle lived in an apartment in inner Melbourne. The project became an obsession and he worked on it every night from 6 - 10pm for 3 months solid. From the outset, Kyle had absolutely no idea what

he was doing, and relied on YouTube and google along the way to help. Still a lot of things didn’t make sense, so everything took quite long and cost substantially more than it would for someone had they done it before. Every single component was dismantled (bar the engine), de-rusted and cleaned (including every single nut and bolt).

Trying to reassemble a motorbike in a tiny courtyard out the back of an apartment and on the kitchen table was no simple task. That didn’t seem to bother Kyle though as the end goal was in sight. Kyle headed back down to Phillip Island and spent an entire weekend painting the engine, then fitting it and bringing the bike back as a rolling chassis and engine.

Christian from Classic and Vintage Motorcycle Garage in Cheltenham, Melbourne, gave the bike a good once over and made sure she was ready for the road. These days she’s riding around great. Kyle hopes anyone reading this will gain the confidence to tackle a big unknown bike project and turn a vision into reality!
