RODS, REELS, & LINES
Scott Rod’s Radian won the 2013 ICAST/IFTD award this July for the best new freshwater fly rod best product of the year. "It seems like every few years a new rod design comes along that legitimately changes the performance paradigm like the G.Loomis GLX, the Sage XP, or the Orvis Helios”- Kirk Deeter’s ,Angling Trade and TU's Trout Magazine. The feel of this rod has while casting makes it something very special. It’s like an extension of you arm that sends the fly wherever you point it. According to the company this feeling is generated by ReAct technology, X-Core Technology, FiberFuse, Multi-Modulus Design, ARC, and handcrafted assembly. My understanding is limited to the last item on this list but my understanding for what Scott has been accomplished is how it perfumes when fishing it. Like all Scott products the components and workmanship is outstanding. Features like titanium framed SIC stripping guides, custom REC reel seats with burled box elder spacers, the very top grade Portuguese cork, and the new patented Universal snake guides with “radiused” feet that fit slimmer on a rounded blank, alignment dots, and measuring wraps on the blank are all included.
The 4-piece rods are currently available in 4- to 8-weight models for $795. Yeah, its not inexpensive but its a bargain for a 100% American made fly rod that is as good as it gets.
Hardy has introduced a new set of fly rods fly rods built on the SINTRIXŽblank for improved strength and durability. These medium action rods offer Fuji butt guides and hard chrome snake guides on a pearl grey' blank with silver highlights. The rods have an anodized aluminium up-locking reel seat. There are twenty rods in the range which cover the all single and double hand model for freshwater fishing. The range features a ten foot for Euro and Czech nymphing $449 – $549.
Sage Manufacturing recently announced the release of its 2014 premier collection of high performance rods called the METHOD series. These ultra-fast fly rods use Sage’s proprietary Konnetic technology. The METHOD delivers high line speeds and tight loops for extreme distance and wind-cutting casts all while maintaining critical accuracy and feel. “Our newest high performance rods will make any caster better but will help experienced casters notch exceptional casts with regularity.” Jerry Siem Features include Fuji ceramic stripping guides, Cocobolo wood insert and black reel seat components, full wells grip, and coated aluminum rod tube. FRA was one of the first shops in the country to carry these new rods. They are offered in 12 different 4-piece models from 4-weight to 9weight and priced at $800 to $820
At the same time the Method (above) was announced Sage introduced the MOTIVE series of rods for saltwater. This series features a new taper designed to deliver fast line speeds and, perhaps more importantly, load quickly.
The fast action MOTIVE is Bluefin blue with Royal Blue and Black trim wraps, an aluminum reel seat, and Full Wells grip. The 8 to 12weight models are a great bargain at $425
Winston Rod Company has stepped beyond Boron II with its new Boron III LS. The last remaining Boron II rods have been upgraded to Winston’s latest technology. The new rods not only offer a higher level of performance, but they are quite a departure from the Winston tradition in the fit and finish arena - a skeletal reel seat. The other obvious change is the extremely thin blank, which matches up to the way dry fly rods are moving being produced now. Everything else on the rod is pure Winston - emerald green color, amazing finish, and top-notch cork. This medium-fast action rod is offered in 2 to 5-weight models at a $795 price point.
After several hiatus of several years Front Range Anglers I stocking the new and improved series of fly reels from Sage Manufacturing. The large Arbor Evoke features a unique modified full frame with exposed dual palming rim, the EVOKE lets you add fingertip or palm pressure from either side of the reel as you feel exactly how much it will take to turn that fish. But it’s not all up to you; the EVOKE utilizes the same proven fish-stopping carbon drag design in the top of the line 6000 series, with an intuitive drag knob with detents from 1 to 39 so you have twice the finesse when tuning-in desired drag resistance. They are built around a unique Cassette drag design drag system that creates a smooth resistance while efficiently dissipating heat. It does all this with a minimum of weight, allowing fishermen more line feel and the ability to make more casts without fatigue. This sealed system is impervious to water, sand and grit, requiring no maintenance beyond simple rinsing. Offered in 4 colors from $550 to $700 for 5 to 12-weight lines.
For Waterworks-Lampson 2014 is Litespeed re-loaded. For years an iconic ultra-large arbor reel, Litespeed has now been refined for even higher retrieve rate, improved ergonomics, easier line management and less mass. Everything that was achieved in the previous model has been pushed farther. Narrower drag geometry has translated into a flatter spool surface for less knuckle dragging. A more aggressive drag knob has been designed. Structural refinements such as the curved arbor have made a light reel even lighter, and this curved arbor (which we introduced in 1998) stores backing into a “diameter well” and keeps “working line” at a maximum radius to optimize everything we love about large arbor reels. Rio's new flagship fly line, the Perception, has a lot going for it and easily won a best product award at the 2013 ICAST/IFTD show. The Perception uses InTouch - a no stretch technology first introduced with
RIO’s sinking lines sinking lines. The advantages are pretty substantial. Not only does it improve hookups, but it assists in casting. How so? Line stretches while hauling are eliminated meaning higher line speed and longer casts. Mending and line pickup's on longer sections of line is considerably improved without the typical stretch.
