An historical experiment In 205 B.C., the Greek astronomer Eratosthenes, at the time Director of the Great Library of Alexandria in Egypt, proposed a purely geometrical method to measure the circumference of the Earth. He used the observation of shadows made at two different places, Alexandria and Syene (now Aswan).
A hands on activity Simple materials are used this collaborative experiment: A vertical stick and a clock. Then students exchange their results to calculate the circumference of the Earth with a simple geometric method
A pedagogical project The project is proposed by “La main à la Pâte” Foundation, with the support of the French Academy of Sciences.
