Continuity of learning Astronomy
Following in the footsteps of Eratosthenes
An historical experiment In 205 B.C., the Greek astronomer Eratosthenes, at the time Director of the Great Library of Alexandria in Egypt, proposed a purely geometrical method to measure the circumference of the Earth. He used the observation of shadows made at two different places, Alexandria and Syene (now Aswan).
A hands on activity Simple materials are used this collaborative experiment: A vertical stick and a clock.
Then students exchange their results to calculate the circumference of the Earth with a simple geometric method
A pedagogical project The project is proposed by “La main à la Pâte” Foundation, with the support of the French Academy of Sciences.
Activities during lockdown drill Students and teachers from 32 schools over 4 continents realized 432 collaborative measures from march 18th to May 17th.
