INTERNATIONAL GENEVA FOR PROTECTING LIFE ON LAND Non-sustainable use of natural resources threatens the livelihoods of millions of people in developing countries. In Madagascar, the International Trade Centre (ITC) facilitates training on sustainable practices for women’s associations in the sourcing and processing of raffia-based products. This contributes to the rehabilitation of raffia-producing areas and long-term environmental and income sustainability for local communities.

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) hosts 5 international environmental Conventions. It provides countries with concrete tools, policy advice and technical assistance to protect the environment for current and future generations. In cooperation with FAO, UNECE also promotes the sustainable management of forests.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) develops standards that establish best practices to help manage forests sustainably, combat land degradation and desertification, and improve the quality of soil.

Since 2008, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) has supported over 115 countries and at least 19,000 local communities in managing issues ranging from changing rainfall patterns to sea level rise to soil erosion and better land use that contributes to strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity. UNDP supported more than 30 countries through GEF-financed projects that target degraded land by promoting sustainable land management (SLM) – impacting over 9 million hectares at the site and landscape levels and over 43 million hectares benefiting from policy-level measures.

Trainings, and humanitarian and technical assistance provided by the International Civile Defence Organization (ICDO) aim to support preparedness of civil society in the fight against man-made and natural disasters.

Global exports of wood and wood articles have grown at an average of 3% yearly since 2000. The World Trade Organization (WTO) provides a forum for members to exchange information on national experiences and global action to combat illegal timber trade and to discuss trade opportunities for sustainably harvested products.

The Blue Forests Project, initiative by the UN Environment is a global partnership that improves the management of coastal carbon and ecosystem services to build climate resilient and sustainable communities. The project aims to improve the knowledge and capacity of carbon sequestration in blue forest ecosystems through on-the-ground demonstrations, identifying scientific knowledge gaps and providing best practices and tools for global application.

Protecting forests helps ensure a supply of safe, clean water for the inhabitants of some of the world's largest cities. UN Water coordinates the UN family’s response to water related challenges.
