FOREWORD The City of Townsville Art Collection can proudly hold its own amongst other public art collections within Australia, no doubt due to the long running and prestigious competition, continued high quality entries, and well renowned judges. Further, it has allowed NQPA and the broader Townsville community to connect with Townsville artist and arts administrators who have been invited to undertake the challenging yet rewarding task of judging.

It is with tremendous pride that I welcome you to the 2018 biennial North Queensland Ceramic Awards, the second collaboration between Pinnacles Gallery, Townsville City Council, and the North Queensland Potters Association Inc. (NQPA). Biennial since 2016, the competition can claim a proud history (1973) with its high quality of ceramic entries and the reputation of past judges contributing not only towards increasing the establishment of the City of Townsville Art Collection but to also stay true to the NQPA’s intent to increase public exposure to a high standard of ceramics from well known potters and to provide a platform for emerging ceramic artists to showcase their work.

This year’s judge, Greg Daly, is a renowned ceramic artist and educator, and until recently, has been the Head of Ceramics at the Australian National University in Canberra.

6

Greg has lectured, held workshops, and judged competitions, both nationally and internationally, and his work is featured in numerous galleries and their collections around the world. We are indeed fortunate to have him judging the 2018 biennial North Queensland Ceramic Awards.

I wish to thank all of those who have contributed to delivering the 2018 biennial North Queensland Ceramic Awards, particularly the members of NQPA and the staff of Pinnacles Gallery, Townsville City Council, who have worked towards the success of this exhibition.

Of course, the competition would not be possible without our sponsors; Thanks must go to Scott Brickworks, Loloma Jewellers, Fourex Clothing, Grace Removals Group, and the Rainford Family for their support, and particularly to the major sponsor, Townsville City Council.

Finally, I wish to thank all of the artists who have taken an interest in the competition and given their time to create works. My congratulations go to those who were selected for display in this wonderful exhibition, for the enjoyment of the wider Townsville community. Sharon Jewell President North Queensland Potters Association Inc.

SPONSORS

Townsville City Council have been long term supporters of the exhibition, and in 2018 sponsor the major prize to $10,000 acquisitive.

Scott Brickworks have been sponsors of the North Queensland Ceramic Awards since 2007.

Loloma Jewellers have been sponsors of the North Queensland Ceramic Awards since 2000.

8

Fourex Clothing, thanks to the passion of the Short family, have been long term supporters of the North Queensland Ceramic Awards, having sponsored a prize since 1994.

RAINFORD David and Phyllis Rainford’s interest in pottery stems from their days at the National Art School in Sydney, as collectors of ceramics, and as members of the NQ Potters Association Inc. The sponsors are pleased to be involved to ensure the exhibition “will become a prominent event in the national arts calendar, bringing stimulating and exciting works to Townsville, thus enhancing the already excellent standard set by local potters.”
