A traveller ’s tale Final - USE THIS ONE
I thought I would travel to Africa once, tick it off my list and move on to the next place. Multiple stamps in the passport later, and the love affair is far from over. I travelled to Botswana for a second time last year and the experience was entirely different to the first. It was the end of the dry season and the water levels in the Okavango Delta were uncharacteristically low, even for that time of year. It was incredible to see it from above as we flew into our lodges in the Delta. The lodges were small and intimate and the staff and guides were just incredible; welcoming, knowledgeable and entertaining. Some people were worried about staying in permanent tented camps but this is by no means camping. We had a beautifully decked outdoor shower and freestanding bath; imagine washing your hair under a sky of stars and listening to the sounds of the African bush. I loved being completely off the grid as well. No TV, no Phone, no internet, no emails – not even an alarm clock. Your personal wake-up call comes in the form of freshly brewed coffee to your tent at sunrise. There were so many ‘wow’ moments I lost count. But nothing beats gliding down the Delta in a mokoro and pulling up on a dry riverbed where our guides, Titus and Eustice, had set up a makeshift bar. We sipped gin and tonics as the sun set, while the camp’s resident elephant (known affectionately by staff as ‘Little Dave’) munched away on reeds just across the bank. Jenny travelled with Peregrine in September 2015 on the Classic Botswana tour. peregrineadventures.com // 1
Effortless Travel Final - USE THIS ONE
At Peregrine we offer premium adventures, and for us that means embracing the spirit of adventure through an immersive cultural experience. This means guaranteed departures, handpicked accommodation, intimate
Local Experiences Why travel if not for the experience? To see and do things you can’t see and do at home? We start with the highlights, but when the big tour groups get back on the coach, our local guides will take you on more unique journey – to a homestay in Morocco for a traditional Berber meal, sunset cocktails with new friends in Zanzibar or sharing stories around the campfire with Botswana’s Ghanzi bushmen.

small groups, award-winning local guides, added inclusions and a slower, more considered pace. We’ll take you to the major highlights as well as along roads less travelled, getting you closer
to the local people and the culture you came to discover. Most of our transport is in private airconditioned vehicles, so we can avoid queues and crowds on public transport. Who said adventure had to be hard?

Taking care of the details Final - USE THIS ONE
We’re all for taking the stress and uncertainties out of travel. You won’t need to rely on maps and guidebooks; our award winning local leaders take you to the heart of a destination (not just the major tourist sights) – they’ll
take care of entrance fees and tipping too. Airport arrival transfers are included, as are many meals throughout the trip, however we leave some lunches and dinners free, for you to make your own delicious food discoveries. At the
end of the day, hand-picked quality accommodation will ensure a comfortable night’s sleep. While flights, travel insurance and visas are usually not included in the base tour cost, we can assist in organising these for you.
What’s included • Guaranteed departure • All included sightseeing and entrance costs • Quality, hand-picked accommodation • A highly experienced Peregrine tour leader • Gratuities for services received as part of tour • Many meals (as indicated) • Additional specialist guides and porters • Airport arrival transfer • 24-hour emergency support from our local team peregrineadventures.com // 3

Small group journeys Final - USE THIS ONE
For some companies, the term ‘small group’ means sharing a bus with 45 other people. Not us. On a Peregrine tour you’ll be travelling in a group of, on average, just ten people. So when we say small group journeys, we mean
it. You’ll get more personal and attentive service from your local leader, make lasting friendships and explore places off limits to the larger tour groups (like that tiny seafood barbecue restaurant in Essaouira or beachfront bar in
Zanzibar). With fewer travellers in our groups, you’ll spend less time waiting around, and more time seeing the sights. It’s also how we reduce our travel footprint, preserving local experiences for future generations.
TRAVELLER TALES
“If you want to see the Big 5 and heaps more animals and birds, great landscapes and a great variety of wonderful accommodation and experiences this is the tour for you.”
“From our first arrival at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge looking over the wildlife at the waterhole, to the end of the tour in Windhoek, every day was spectacular. We are going back!”
“If you enjoy learning, exploring, seeing varied cultures, different languages, varied landscapes, and so much amazing wildlife – then Africa is for you. An amazing place with so much to offer.”

safety and speaking the language. Our small group size means more access to your guide’s incredible local knowledge, to ask questions, or get insider info on great local cuisine and hidden hot spots. In a nutshell, they’ll look after you.
Twenty years ago, we became the first travel company of our kind to exclusively employ Englishspeaking local leaders, born and raised in the regions we visit. Who better to get to the heart of a destination with than the people
who live there? Our local leaders know more than just historical dates and trivial facts. They’ll share their stories, help you find hidden highlights (that you won’t find in a guidebook) and provide you with practical information on etiquette,

“What inspired me to be a leader is that I love sharing knowledge and information about the countries we visit. I also love adventure, and solving client’s problems. By the end of the trip the client is happy, which makes me happy as well.”
“I like meeting people from all different parts of the world – the added bonus is that I get to learn about their culture too! I have fun on my trips and make sure my groups have twice as much fun as I do.”
“There’s a West African proverb that says, ‘You are never alone in Africa’. I like the solidarity, the colourful daily life, the rich culture and history. Meeting friendly people, sharing stories and seeing beautiful nature are things that make me appreciate this region.” peregrineadventures.com // 5
Accommodation Final - USE THIS ONE
Hand-picked, quality lodgings Travelling in small groups means we aren’t restricted to staying in larger chain hotels. It means our destination experts can seek out smaller quality hotels, that better reflect the style of the region. All of our accommodation is carefully hand-picked for its quality, amenities and convenient location, so you can spend less time checking in, seeking out a wifi signal or lining up for the breakfast buffet, and more time soaking up a destination over a glass of wine.

Exclusive Feature Stays Almost all of our small group tours include at least one night in a Feature Stay – a stand out property that offers a deeper level of cultural immersion or unique perspective of a destination. It could be a comfortable thatched hut – built in the traditional Gamo style – in the Great Rift Valley, a heritage riad in Morocco or a luxury tent in the heart of the Okavango Delta. Look for the Feature Stay stamp throughout this brochure for more information on some of our favourites.

Moments to Remember Final - USE THIS ONE
Seeing the famous sights is a must, but it’s often the unexpected moments that leave a lasting impression. We’ll take you beyond the highlights and travel at a relaxed pace that allows you to stop and savour each moment along the way. Throughout this brochure, you will see ‘Peregrine Moments’ on each of our trips. These are just a few of the special experiences you’ll have on your Peregrine trip; the highlights you’ll only have while travelling in a small group with a local leader. We’ll still get that perfect photograph of Morocco’s desert dunes at sunrise or wildlife congregating at a waterhole, but hearing stories about Bo-Kaap’s colourful history over a home-cooked meal with our host or watching a traditional San Bushmen healing ceremony are more likely to stand out as future memories.

Responsible Travel Final - USE THIS ONE
Responsible travel is at the core of our ethos. We employ our own local guides and staff from the destinations in which we operate; we eat in local restaurants and stay in quality, locally run accommodation that directly contributes to employment and the economy. It’s easy to be a responsible traveller; start by carrying a water bottle with you instead of buying plastic bottles to reduce rubbish, say no to plastic bags, learn a few words of the language, and respect local customs. Simple!
How we help
Our Foundation
Carbon offset travel
Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) provides porters with support, advocacy and education, and works with the travel industry to ensure good climbing practices and conditions for the hardworking porters. While many operators have been known to cut costs (some force porters to carry more than the permitted 20kg weight limit and provide no food or shelter on the mountain), we run all our trips in accordance to local law.
In 2002, our parent company the Intrepid Group founded The Intrepid Foundation, a notfor-profit organisation that allows our travellers to give back to the communities they visit. Since then, our Foundation has contributed more than $5 million to more than 50 non-profit organisations around the world that address issues such as education, child welfare, environmental and wildlife protection.
In order to minimise our carbon footprint and contribute to a cleaner energy future for the next generations, we carbon offset all main emissions on our trips, with no additional cost to the traveller.

Private and Tailored Travel Options Final - USE THIS ONE
We understand that some travellers would prefer to see the world with their partner, a few close friends, or on their own. If group travel isn’t for you, we’ve got a number of private travel options available; carefully curated itineraries that follow the same premium adventure style as our regular group departures.
Private groups Prefer to travel with friends or family? Our private groups team can design an itinerary based on your list of must-sees and dos. Talk to one of our Destination Experts, choose your dates and travel companions and we’ll take care of the rest.
Independent Journeys
Independent Experiences
Some travellers would rather travel with a close friend or partner, so we’ve reimagined a selection of our top itineraries for just one or two travellers. You’ll have a specialist Peregrine guide in each location but will travel independently between major stops, to enjoy the benefits of a fully comprehensive itinerary with the freedom of a private tour.
Departing for a group tour on a specific date doesn’t suit everyone. So we’ve created a range of short ‘mini tours’ that you can link together to create your own unique holiday. Designed for one to three people, take an Independent Experience before or after a small group tour, or mix and match a few Experiences to create your ideal trip combination. It’s independent travel without the stress.
In this brochure we offer The Nile Valley Highlights and Jordan Explorer as an Independent Journeys. See pages 60 and 61 for trip itineraries.
See pages 32–33, 42-43 and 70-71 for a summary of our Independent Experiences in East Africa, Southern Africa and the Middle East.

Frequently Asked Questions Final - USE THIS ONE
Where do I find more information on a specific tour? Head to our website, type the trip name or code into the search box at the top of the page, and away you go! There’s a button at the end of each trip page that allows you to view essential trip information, such as a comprehensive itinerary, inclusions and other useful information. Do I need a visa or travel insurance? Many countries require you to have a visa before arrival. After you’ve booked your trip, we’ll send you a pre-departure checklist containing all the visa information you’ll need. It’s important to get visa sorted well in advance. Travel insurance is compulsory on all Peregrine trips.
Do I need to book flights? The prices quoted in this brochure and on our website do not include international flights, however our sales team can help you book your flights. Just ask when you’re making your booking. How do I book a tour? You can book any Peregrine trip through our website, over the phone, in person or through your local travel agent. I’m travelling on my own. Do I need to pay more? Not at all! All our trips are twinshare (solo-travelling ladies share with ladies, while gents share with gents) so there’s no single supplement to pay. If you’d prefer your own room, we can arrange this on most trips at an additional cost. Let us know when you book.
Are there age limits or do I need to have a certain level of fitness? There’s no specific age limit, however most Peregrine passengers are in their 40s, 50s and 60s. Some of our trips involve walking on rocky terrain, cycling and climbing stairs – check the physical ratings (explained below) to see if the trip is right for you. How many people will I travel with? The maximum group size on all trips is 16, however groups usually consist of about ten travellers. What’s included in the price of a tour? An experienced English-speaking leader local to the region, airport arrival transfer (most itineraries), all transport (mostly private), all accommodation, sightseeing and entrance fees, many meals.
Using this brochure Every Peregrine trip has been given a physical activity rating, on a scale of 1-5. l These trips are a relaxing break. You don’t have to worry about doing anything physically demanding unless you want to.
lll This trip will raise your heartbeat. Moderate physical activities are included and a good level of fitness is required.
ll Some easy physical activities are included in your trip. No physical preparation is required to make the most of the journey.
l l l l Be prepared for some serious physical activity. The fitter you are, the more you’ll enjoy it, as most activities will be challenging.
GROUP WALKING TOURS Most of our itineraries are designed for people with an average level of fitness, but some involve some extra huff and puff (eg. trekking to see gorillas in the Parc National des Volcans) and others demand a serious level of fitness (e.g. climbing Mt Kilimanjaro).
COMBINATION TRIPS
This indicates two or three trips rolled into one. On these trips, some travellers will do the whole journey while others will join halfway through. It can also mean the leader will change on different sections of the trip. Transfers between trips are included.
l l l l l Get ready for a heartpumping adventure with plenty of challenges and some extreme conditions. You’ll be required to be seriously fit for this trip, as difficult activities are included.
It’s hard for us to choose favourites but there are some key trips that are consistently in high demand and are often quick to sell out. If you’re looking for the best of the best, keep an eye out for our Signature Trips icon – these indicate our top-selling trips.

Welcome to
Africa’s Grand Safari
Our two biggest overland trips across Africa slowly reveal the complexity, beauty and history of some 27 regions. Crumbling temples and pyramids give way to great lakes, vast plains and the wild creatures that inhabit them, each sunrise filled with the promise of new experiences and new understandings. These are the perfect journeys for travellers with an open mind and the spirit for adventure... Travelling on an overland adventure means not only seeing more of Africa, but more time for creating those special bonds with your fellow travellers, leader and driver. As with all the best adventures, these trips are as much about the journey as the destination. Keep an eye out for this truck symbol throughout the brochure, as this indicates that the trip is an overlanding experience. The ‘What to Know’ section will also let you know which days are operated in our Overland trucks.

AFRICA’S GRAND SAFARI

ERITREA
Welcome to
East Africa For many travellers, it’s the dream of seeing Africa’s iconic animals up close and in the wild that first inspires their journey. As far as wildlife encounters go, there really is nothing like spying a lion on the prowl, watching herds of zebra and wildebeest storm the Serengeti or keeping company with mountain gorillas in the misty highlands of Uganda and Rwanda. Yet it’s often encounters with Africa’s other inhabitants that end up leaving the greatest impressions. Whether evinced in a story told by a Maasai or a joke shared with a porter along the Kilimanjaro trail, the grace and good humour of East Africa’s people is legendary.

A spectacle like no other The sight of wildebeest crossing a river churning with crocodiles can inspire many different emotions. The slow, sure-footed step of these creatures can seem more like a nervous limp as we will the herd to go faster, hoping in vain they’ll all make it across the water. Yet we can also sympathise with the hungry crocs waiting in the wings, and scan the herd for suitable targets just as they do. The kill, when it comes, is a whole different story – an unspeakable display of Mother Nature’s duality. Each year, the Great Migration of some two million animals – driven north and back again by shifts in rainfall – turns the plains of the Serengeti and Masai Mara into a theatre like no other.
East Africa’s wildest spectacle is all part of a much greater drama that unfolds year-round and continent wide. From Pendjari in the west across to Ngorongoro in the east and down to Kruger in the south, the circle of life plays out in Africa on a daily basis. With Peregrine, you’ll witness the iconic beasts that are so symbolic of the African wild – the cheetahs, leopards and lions; the elephants, hippos and rhinos; the eagles, kestrels and sparrowhawks. But you’ll also have the chance to go further and deeper into the wild, where the rare and lesser-known gems dwell – the lemur of Madagascar, the snakebirds of the Okavango Delta and the mountain gorillas in the dense rainforests of Rwanda and Uganda.

Our formidable reputation for mountain trekking is built on our commitment to safe and responsible practice. We place high priority on making sure all our trek leaders come fully equipped to help get you from Marangu all the way to Africa’s highest peak. To get you there safely, we’ve invested in our experienced English-speaking guides by providing them with training from medical and altitude specialists from the UK. Our team also carries oxygen tanks and medical kits just in case there’s an emergency. On each trek you’ll be fully briefed by an experienced guide before setting out, and amply supported by a crew of guides, cooks and porters,
with a minimum one guide allocated to every two climbers. All our trekking staff live in the area too, which means this is a great opportunity to learn about the local culture while also taking in the stunning landscape of Mt Kilimanjaro. Trekking with us, there are no hidden extras. Everything you’ll need – National Park entrance fees, climbing fees, camping and hut fees, and rescue services (if required) – is included in the trip price. We don’t just provide the bare minimum either, with complimentary sleeping bags, walking poles and camping equipment all included to keep you comfortable on the route to Uhuru Peak. With all the details taken care of, you can focus on making the most of this unforgettable trek.

Welcome to
Southern Africa
It’s for good reason that Southern Africa has become synonymous with safaris over the years. Kruger’s wild savannas, the Okavango’s lush waterways, Etosha’s vast dust pans, Isalo’s bulging granite buttes – this region’s national parks (and their opportunities for wildlife watching) are world-class. Yet they’re also only the beginning. Add in the world’s mightiest waterfall and highest sand dunes and cultures as diverse as the vintners of the Cape Winelands and San of the Kalahari, and you might just have discovered Africa’s most rewarding destination.

Witness the power of Victoria Falls on a guided morning tour, then embark on a sunset wildlife spotting cruise along the Upper Zambezi River. In free time, choose from a variety of optional activities on offer, such as canoeing, kayaking or whitewater rafting. Accommodation is the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, which features a bar with superb views across a waterhole frequented by elephants and other animals.
After checking into your riverside lodge at The Zambezi Waterfront, spend a leisurely afternoon getting to know Livingstone at your own pace. Much more than simply the place where a Scottish explorer first clapped eyes on Mosi-oa-Tunya, this town is an adventure hub with a suite of excursions and activities on offer. In between exploring Africa’s biggest falls with a local guide and cruising down the Upper Zambezi River in search of wildlife, perhaps sign up for a game drive through Zambezi National Park, a rope-based canopy adventure, or a helicopter flight over the falls and Zambezi Gorges.
From Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, travel by private vehicle across the Botswana border to Chobe Safari Lodge, a set-up of thatched rondavels on the edge of this famous national park. Spend your time here unwinding by the lodge’s elegant bar and pool, which overlook the Chobe River, and exploring the park on game drives and boat cruises. You’ll almost certainly see elephants drinking at the water’s edge, and possibly zebras, buffalo, hippos and giraffe. The park’s birdlife is also impressive, with saddle-billed storks, fish eagles, malachite kingfishers, goliath herons and bee-eaters often spotted along the river.

Morocco & North Africa In the swirling square of Marrakech’s Djemaa el- Fna, palm readers and sword swallowers mesmerise the crowds. A little homegrown knowledge goes a long way in making the most of a country as rich, complex and ancient as Morocco. Welcome to the
Middle East
In the Middle East, the ancient seeps steadily into the present. You feel it at the iconic Pyramid of Giza, which has been defining the landscape for 4,000 years, and at Jerusalem’s Temple Mount – a place sacred to three of the world’s most influential faiths. The beauty of Petra, the Rose City, still enchants two millennia on and, amid the golden desert dunes and palm-filled oases of Oman, time feels to stand still. Even in Istanbul’s clamorous Grand Bazaar, or the modern-day souks of Esfahan, tradition emanates, mixing with rice spice aromas and the daily calls to prayer.

MEET THE INTREPID GROUP FAMILY Run by travellers, for travellers. We’re a family of adventure travel companies, who together make up the world’s largest provider of adventure travel experiences. For more than 27 years, we’ve specialised in creating immersive, off-the-beatenpath adventures for every type of traveller – from the young to the young-at-heart – with over 1,000 itineraries in 100 countries catering to all budgets, travel styles, and appetites for adventure.
Adventures for every type of traveller Love the idea of Peregrine, but looking for more options? One of the other adventure companies in our family might be just what you’re looking for:
Run by passionate locals in more than 150 cities around the globe, Urban Adventures showcase both the world famous sites and local hotspots that make a place tick. From home-cooking classes to history lessons, or cycling excursions to social enterprises, Urban Adventures were created to give travellers a taste of what an Intrepid small group adventure feels like and can be as short as a couple of hours, or as long as a whole day.
If you’re aged 18-29, in the mood for epic adventures with other travellers your own age, your next trip may be with Geckos Adventures. We tread lightly and think locally – our trips are designed for smart, like-minded young travellers who want to avoid the big buses and explore like a local.
Intrepid’s small group adventures are for travellers of every age, budget, and appetite for adventure. From three to 365-day tours, from real food adventures to sailing, cycling or trekking adventures, Intrepid Travel is designed to cater for a diverse range of like-minded people who want to truly experience travel the local way.
Adventure Tours Australia has been leading travellers through this diverse land for 25 years. Now 100% Aussie owned, the only thing our expert local guides love more than their country is the chance to show it off. Seeing the sunset over Uluru or snorkelling Great Barrier Reef is pretty special, but we reckon it’s the stories of our people and an understanding of our indigenous culture that is fundamental to truly bringing the real Australia to life.
Responsible travel is a big reason we do the things we do. It’s why, way back in 2002, we set up The Intrepid Foundation – the Intrepid Group’s not-for-profit organisation that all of our travellers, including Peregrine, can support. Its purpose was pretty simple: to empower travellers to make a difference and to help communities in the places we visit. Since it began, we’ve raised over AUD$5m for 53 grassroots projects in 25 countries around the world, covering 100% of the administrative costs and doubling donations, dollar for dollar (up to $1,000 per donor and a total of AUD$400,000 per financial year, excluding emergency appeals).
Tailor-made trips Whether you want to create a journey with your friends or set out with just the two of you on your own adventure, we can help. Find out more: privategroups@intrepidgroup.travel 72 // peregrineadventures.com
