A traveller ’s tale Final - USE THIS ONE

For years I have travelled independently, and although I still travel on my own for part of a trip, travelling with a small group takes away all the hassle and time spent researching everything from transport to accommodation. It’s also far more sociable; enjoying a beer and sharing stories with fellow travellers is a great way to finish the day. Our Peregrine leader was very well-informed, friendly and helpful – something you miss out on if you are travelling independently. Peregrine arranged a great variety of accommodation including a houseboat, a desert lodge with private outside bathroom (quite an experience having a shower under the stars!), and a beautiful safari lodge – all quite different but very comfortable and interesting. Travelling with Peregrine overland from Victoria Falls to Cape Town was a fascinating, enriching experience enjoyed with a small group of likeminded people. The range of activities on offer – from canoeing down the Orange River, climbing dune 45 and seeing the stunning colours at Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert, to a dugout canoe ride in the Okavango Delta – catered to everyone on the tour. There was also time to spend exploring on your own and enjoy some of the optional activities. With so much on offer, it is difficult to pick out any one highlight, but having a large herd of elephants pass right beside our vehicle on their way to cross the Chobe river was especially memorable. The distances covered are vast, so be prepared for some long days in the vehicle – and as some of the roads are rough, also be prepared for the odd puncture! However, the guide and driver quickly changed tyres and we were soon on our way. It all adds to the interest and memories of the trip.

Small group journeys What makes travelling in small groups so special? For some companies, the term ‘small group’ means sharing a bus with 45 other people. That’s where we differ. The average group size on our journeys is just 10 people, and there’ll never be more than 12 on our classic itineraries. It’s the perfect number for a candlelit dinner party in Reniala Park, or a memorable mokoro ride on the Okavango Delta. Better still, a more intimate group size elevates those extraordinary moments to something truly special.

2 // peregrineadventures.com

Unparalleled access We visit areas often restricted to larger groups, allowing you to immerse yourself in the destination (away from the jostling masses).

Get to know your group We know it can be hard to bond with a busload of strangers. Being in a small group means you can really get to know your travelling companions and create special memories together.

Sustainable travel Travelling in smaller groups is a more sustainable way to see the world. Better still, Peregrine carbon offsets each of its tours on your behalf.

A considered pace Instead of packing and unpacking (and then repacking) each day, there’s more time to explore, to soak up the atmosphere, to relax and unwind at your own pace.

Accommodation options Small groups have the flexibility to stay in a wider range of lodgings. Think fewer big chains and more unique and quality accommodation.

Less time waiting With fewer travellers in our groups, you’ll spend less time checking into hotels and getting on (and off) transport, and more time seeing the sights.

Award-winning leaders Smaller group sizes also mean you’ll have more time to spend with our expert leaders, who can answer questions and share insider tips only a local can know.

Move around with ease Some subscribe to the theory that, if it’s comfortable it isn’t a true adventure. Not us. We’re all for taking the hassles out of group travel and delivering peace of mind at every step.

Unforgettable dining While bigger tour groups may struggle to get seats at restaurants, your local leader will get you a table at the most authentic (and delicious) locations.

Better photo opportunities Less people means a greater chance of capturing that incredible shot of the Cinque Terre, not the back of someone’s head.

peregrineadventures.com // 3

Local knowledge Twenty years ago, we became the first travel company of our kind to exclusively employ local leaders in the regions we visit. After all, who better to guide you through the back streets than someone who lives there? Our tours will start with the highlights, but when the large tour groups hop back on their coach and leave, our local leaders will help you find a more unique, personal experience that gets you closer to the people and the culture you came to discover. “I love my job. It’s really good to meet with people from different cultures and to show off my country – to be really proud of what we have here. What I love most about my country is the people, who are so friendly and helpful, as well as our amazing wildlife that people travel from around the world to come and see.”

Florence Chepkemoi, Kenya 4 // peregrineadventures.com

Moments to remember Seeing the famous sights is a must, but it’s often the unexpected moments that are the most special. We’ll take you beyond the highlights and travel at a relaxed pace that allows you to stop and savour each moment along the way. Throughout this brochure, you’ll find ‘Peregrine Moments’ on each of our trips. These are just a few of the special experiences you’ll have with Peregrine; the highlights you’ll only have while travelling in a small group with a local leader. We’ll still

get that perfect photograph of the Ngorongoro Crater, or wildlife on the Serengeti, but sharing stories with the Maasai around the fire and learning how they have preserved their culture for generations is a memory you’ll cherish long after the trip has ended.

Peregrine Moments Cocktails at sunset – Okavango Delta Catch an African sunset from your houseboat deck and listen to the sound of breaching hippos and trilling cicadas (page 18).

Meerkat experience – Oudtshoorn Peek into the world of meerkats on a tour with our experienced guide, Devey, and spy these curious creatures peeking out from their burrows (page 39). Photo: Robert Livingstone-Ward

Responsible travel Responsible travel is at the core of our ethos. We employ our own local guides and staff from the destinations in which we operate; we eat in local restaurants and stay in quality, locally run accommodation that directly contributes to employment and the economy.

Planet

We do all of this as part of our commitment to the United Nations Global Compact. Everything we do, from choosing our transport to organising a homestay, is guided by our five key sustainability initiatives, which we call the The 5 P’s.

People We treat all people with fairness and respect. It’s our aim to promote justice and equality across our global communities and offer protection to our most vulnerable societies.

8 // peregrineadventures.com

We protect the environment by using resources in an efficient, fair and responsible way. Our trips are designed to limit their physical and environmental impact, and preserve destinations for generations to come.

Prosperity We implement best practices in everything we do to reduce inequalities and support local economies. We do this while achieving responsible and sustainable growth for our business.

Peace We foster peaceful, just and inclusive societies by promoting cross-cultural understanding and diversity. Our approach is built on the idea that sustainable grassroots travel can be fundamental in preventing prejudice, bigotry and misunderstanding.

Partnerships We develop and mantain healthy cross-cultural partnerships across our business, particularly through our non-profit, The Intrepid Foundation. These partnerships are created to benefit the poorest and most vulnerable members of society.

The Intrepid Foundation Photo: Robert Livingstone-Ward

In 2002, our parent company, the Intrepid Group, founded The Intrepid Foundation – a not-forprofit organisation that allows our travellers to give back to the communities they visit. Since then the Foundation has contributed more than $5 million to more than 50 non-profit organisations around the world that address issues such as education, child welfare, environmental and wildlife protection. The best bit? We cover 100% of the administrative costs and match every donation, dollar for dollar*.

How to donate You can donate to The Intrepid Foundation anytime: either through your travel agent or Peregrine specialist, or on The Intrepid Foundation homepage. Learn more at theintrepidfoundation.org *up to AUD 1,000 per donor and a total of AUD 400,000 for all donors each financial year (excludes emergency appeals)

40 years of moments After 40 years of travelling the globe you’d think we’ve seen it all? Not even close. Our spirit for adventure is just as strong now as it was when we launched our first small-group adventure in Nepal way back in 1978. While we might have grown since then, our focus has always been on continuing to create special moments on every Peregrine trip. These unique experiences are only made possible thanks to our emphasis on smallgroup travel, our local leaders, and our close relationships with the local communities we visit.

To commemorate this milestone birthday in 2018, we’ll be celebrating with special giveaways and offers throughout the year to give you an opportunity to experience our Peregrine Moments for yourself. Private & Tailored options Photo: Robert Livingstone-Ward

Independent Experiences Departing for a group tour on a specific date doesn’t suit everyone. Designed for one to three people, take a private Independent Experience before or after a small group tour, or mix and match a few Experiences to create your ideal trip combination. It’s independent travel without the stress.

12 // peregrineadventures.com

Private groups We understand that some travellers would prefer to see the world with a group of your own choosing. We can help you create a tailor-made trip to suit any group, whether it’s large or small. Choose from one of our existing itineraries and talk to our team about enhancing it. We can add activities, elevate your accommodation to a luxury level, tailor the itinerary to a particular

interest and you can select a departure date to suit your group. You can also speak to us about creating something truly memorable and use our expertise to design a unique trip for you. It’s not just about the big groups though, we can take smaller groups as well - for family or friends of two or more, who simply want to share the travel experience together.

Frequently Asked Questions Where do I find more information on a specific tour? Visit our website, type the trip name or code into the search box at the top of the page, and away you go! At the end of each trip page is essential trip information, such as a comprehensive itinerary, inclusions and other useful information. Do I need a visa or travel insurance? Many countries require you to have a visa before arrival. After you’ve booked your trip, we’ll send you a pre-departure checklist containing all the visa information you’ll need. It’s important to get your visa organised well in advance. Travel insurance is also compulsory on all Peregrine trips.

Do I need to book flights? The prices quoted in this brochure and on our website do not include flights, however our sales team can help you book these. Just ask when you’re making your booking. How do I book my tour? You can book any Peregrine trip through our website, over the phone, in person or through your local travel agent. I’m travelling on my own. Do I need to pay more? Not at all! All our trips are twin-share (solo-travelling ladies share with ladies, while gents share with gents) so there’s no single supplement to pay. If you’d prefer your own room, we can arrange this on most trips at an additional cost. Let us know when you book.

Are there age limits or do I need to have a certain level of fitness? There’s no specific age limit, however Peregrine passengers are often in their 40s, 50s and 60s. For those concerned with fitness, we’ve attached a physical rating to each trip (see below). How many people will I travel with? The maximum group size on all trips is 12, however groups usually consist of about 10 travellers. The exception is our Adventure Cruising and Polar trips, where we use small ships. What’s included in the price of a tour? An experienced English-speaking leader local to the region, airport arrival transfer (most itineraries), all transport (mostly private), all accommodation, sightseeing and entrance fees, plus many meals.

Using this brochure Every Peregrine trip has been given a physical activity rating, on a scale of 1-5.

l l l l Be prepared for some serious physical activity. The fitter you are, the more you’ll enjoy it, as most activities will be challenging.

Maasai village, Masai Mara

East Africa For many travellers, it’s the dream of seeing Africa’s iconic animals up close and in the wild that first inspires their journey. As far as wildlife encounters go, there really is nothing like spying a lion on the prowl, watching herds of zebra and wildebeest storm the Serengeti or keeping company with mountain gorillas in the misty highlands of Uganda and Rwanda. Yet it’s often encounters with Africa’s other inhabitants that end up leaving the greatest impressions. Whether engrossed in a story told by a Maasai or a joke shared with a porter along the Kilimanjaro trail, the grace and good humour of East Africa’s people is legendary. 22 // peregrineadventures.com

A spectacle like no other The sight of wildebeest crossing a river churning with crocodiles can inspire many different emotions. The slow, sure-footed step of these creatures can seem more like a nervous limp as we will the herd to go faster, hoping in vain they’ll all make it across the water. Yet we can also sympathise with the hungry crocs waiting in the wings, scanning the herd for suitable targets with hunger in their eyes. The kill is a whole different story – a display of Mother Nature’s duality.

With Peregrine, you’ll witness the iconic beasts that are so symbolic of the African wild: the cheetahs, leopards and lions; the elephants, hippos and rhinos; the eagles, kestrels and sparrowhawks. You’ll also have the chance to go further and deeper into the wild, where the rare and lesser-known gems dwell – the lemur of Madagascar, the snakebirds of the Okavango Delta and the mountain gorillas in the dense rainforests of Rwanda and Uganda.

East Africa’s wildest spectacle is all part of a much greater drama that unfolds year-round and continent wide. From Pendjari in the west across to Ngorongoro in the east and down to Kruger in the south, the circle of life plays out in Africa on a daily basis.

Each year, the Great Migration of some two million animals – driven north and back again by shifts in rainfall – turns the plains of the Serengeti and Masai Mara into a theatre like no other. For a migration specific trip, see our Limited Edition – East Africa Migration Safari on page 10.

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Southern Africa It’s for good reason that Southern Africa has become synonymous with safaris over the years. Kruger’s wild savannas, the Okavango’s lush waterways, Etosha’s vast dust pans, Isalo’s bulging granite buttes – this region’s national parks (and their opportunities for wildlife watching) are world-class. Yet they’re also only the beginning. Add in the world’s mightiest waterfall and highest sand dunes, and cultures as diverse as the vintners of the Cape Winelands and San of the Kalahari, and you might just have discovered Africa’s most rewarding destination.

Morocco In the swirling square of Marrakech’s Djemaa el-Fna, palm readers and sword swallowers mesmerise the crowds. In the great dunes surrounding Merzouga, camels snuffle the night air as stories of the Sahara are told in Bedouin desert camps. In the shaded souqs and labyrinthine streets of Fes, where stalls are arranged by craft and handed down through generations, it could be any year, any century. A little homegrown knowledge goes a long way in making the most of a country as rich, complex and ancient as Morocco. Your Peregrine adventure is led by locals who know the lay of the land intimately – opening the door to opportunities aplenty for chatting, mingling and enjoying the hospitality that’s a point of pride to Arab culture.

The

Middle East In the Middle East, the ancient seeps steadily into the present. You feel it at the iconic Pyramid of Giza, which has been defining the landscape for 4,000 years, and at Jerusalem’s Temple Mount – a place sacred to three of the world’s most influential faiths. The beauty of Petra, the Rose City, still enchants two millennia on and, amid the golden desert dunes and palm-filled oases of Oman, time feels to stand still. Even in Istanbul’s clamorous Grand Bazaar, or the modern-day souqs of Esfahan, tradition emanates, mixing with rich spice aromas and the daily calls to prayer.

Travelling independently, though benefitting from the knowledge of local guides along the way, make your way through Egypt’s ancient wonders the best way how – on a cruise down the Nile. In between relaxing on deck and watching rural life drift by, head ashore to investigate the temples of Karnak, Isis and Hatshepsut; tour the Valley of the Kings; learn about the funerary rites of the ancient Egyptians; explor the Nubian Bazaar and stroll along Aswan’s ‘corniche’.

This itinerary offers the chance to see some of Egypt’s most impressive sights in a short time. Following a morning tour of the pyramids in Cairo, drive out across the desert to Alexandria. Savour the mellow seaside vibes, cosmopolitan culture and Italianate architecture of this Mediterranean city, and tour the Roman Catacombs. See ancient Egyptian and Hellenistic artefacts in the Alexandria National Museum, and drive out to the WWII battlefields of El Alamein. Your independent experience ends back in Cairo.

Travel to Jordan and visit the rose-hued fortress city of Petra, which was the capital of the ancient Nabataeans – a mysterious people who carved a trading empire from the desert in what is now modern Jordan. Take time to explore the extraordinary beauty of Petra’s rock-hewn architecture and to discover its history. There’s also time to float in the legendary Dead Sea and see Jerusalem shimmering in the distance from mosaicadorned Mt Nebo.

Relax and unwind at the luxurious desert camp before enjoying a delicious dinner, cooked with an earthen oven by your lovely Bedouin hosts.

Arrive into the opulent desert oasis of Abu Dhabi, the Emirati capital often considered the Vegas of the desert. Enjoy free time to explore, perhaps wandering the perfectly manicured waterfront of the Corniche or browsing the stores of the Marina Mall. Take a 4WD adventure into the golden sands of Arabia. Arrive at a Bedouin desert camp to experience local culture – from henna to belly dancing – and perhaps ride a camel through the dunes.

Drive through the heritage area of Bastakiya, full of courtyards and narrow alleyways, and then visit the ornate Al Fahidi Fort and its museum. Ferry across the Dubai Creek alongside abras (water taxis) criss-crossing the water. Follow aromatic smells as you wander through the enticing traditional spice souq centered around the creek, and then enter the largest gold market in Arabia. An optional excursion visits Joal Fadiouth village, set on an island of clam shells used in local buildings and crafts. Sail to Banjul, gateway to the Gambia River, and stay there overnight. MEET THE INTREPID GROUP FAMILY Run by travellers, for travellers. We’re a family of adventure travel companies, who together make up the world’s largest provider of adventure travel experiences. For more than 27 years, we’ve specialised in creating immersive, off-the-beatenpath adventures for every type of traveller – from the young to the young-at-heart – with over 1,000 itineraries in 100 countries catering to all budgets, travel styles, and appetites for adventure.

Adventures for every type of traveller Love the idea of Peregrine, but looking for more options? One of the other adventure companies in our family might be just what you’re looking for:

Run by passionate locals in more than 150 cities around the globe, Urban Adventures showcase both the world famous sites and local hotspots that make a place tick. From home-cooking classes to history lessons, or cycling excursions to social enterprises, Urban Adventures were created to give travellers a taste of what an Intrepid small group adventure feels like and can be as short as a couple of hours, or as long as a whole day.

If you’re aged 18-29, in the mood for epic adventures with other travellers your own age, your next trip may be with Geckos Adventures. We tread lightly and think locally – our trips are designed for smart, like-minded young travellers who want to avoid the big buses and explore like a local.

Intrepid’s small group adventures are for travellers of every age, budget, and appetite for adventure. From three to 365-day tours, from real food adventures to sailing, cycling or trekking adventures, Intrepid Travel is designed to cater for a diverse range of like-minded people who want to truly experience travel the local way.

Adventure Tours Australia has been leading travellers through this diverse land for 25 years. Now 100% Aussie owned, the only thing our expert local guides love more than their country is the chance to show it off. Seeing the sunset over Uluru or snorkelling Great Barrier Reef is pretty special, but we reckon it’s the stories of our people and an understanding of our indigenous culture that is fundamental to truly bringing the real Australia to life.

Responsible travel is a big reason we do the things we do. It’s why, way back in 2002, we set up The Intrepid Foundation – the Intrepid Group’s not-for-profit organisation that all of our travellers, including Peregrine, can support. Its purpose was pretty simple: to empower travellers to make a difference and to help communities in the places we visit. Since it began, we’ve raised over AUD$5m for 53 grassroots projects in 25 countries around the world, covering 100% of the administrative costs and doubling donations, dollar for dollar (up to $1,000 per donor and a total of AUD$400,000 per financial year, excluding emergency appeals).

Tailor-made trips Whether you want to create a journey with your friends or set out with just the two of you on your own adventure, we can help. Find out more: privategroups@intrepidgroup.travel 72 // peregrineadventures.com
