A traveller ’s tale Final - USE THIS ONE

As a teenager growing up in the UK in the 90s, we were constantly bombarded with news stories of the never-ending conflict in the former Yugoslavia. Once a peaceful country made up of many different cultures and religions, it became a tinderbox of conflict between the religious and ethnic groups (some things never change). I’d always wanted to visit this region, but was never game enough to do it by myself. I’m not a fan of big groups – too much time wasted waiting on everybody else – so was a bit nervous about meeting my Peregrine travelling companions on the first night. I needn’t have worried. We were a diverse bunch, ranging in age from 35 to 79, which included a beef farmer and a naturopath. Everybody had travelled widely, which made for some lively dinner conversations. Our Croatian-born guide was fantastic; she could answer all our questions on the causes, effects and aftermath of the conflict, which allowed us to get a real picture of modern life in this stunning part of Europe. She catered for all our little whims; travelling in our comfortable private mini-bus meant we could always stop for that special photo, or local delicacy to snack on. The scenery was breathtaking – Plitvice Lakes National Park is a World Heritage area filled with waterfalls, beautiful clear lakes and wandering bears (stick to the paths!). Montenegro was a real surprise too, with tiny villages, minarets peeking up through the mountains and stunning fjord-like scenery. I loved it so much I’m going back next year! Effortless Travel Final - USE THIS ONE

At Peregrine we offer premium adventures, and for us that means embracing the spirit of adventure through an immersive cultural experience. This means guaranteed departures, handpicked accommodation, intimate

Local Experiences Why travel if not for the experience? To see and do things you can’t see and do at home? We start with the highlights, but when the big tour groups get back on the coach, our local guides will take you on a more unique journey – to the holein-the-wall restaurant in Rome, wine-tasting with new friends in France or sharing stories with a Berber family in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco.

2 // peregrineadventures.com

small groups, award-winning local guides, added inclusions and a slower, more considered pace. We’ll take you to the major highlights as well as along roads less travelled, getting you closer

to the local people and the culture you came to discover. Most of our transport is in private airconditioned vehicles, so we can avoid queues and crowds on public transport. Who said adventure had to be hard?

Taking care of the details Final - USE THIS ONE

We’re all for taking the stress and uncertainties out of travel. You won’t need to rely on maps and guidebooks; our award winning local leaders take you to the heart of a destination (not just the major tourist sights) – they’ll

take care of entrance fees and tipping too. Airport arrival transfers are included, as are many meals throughout the trip, however we leave some lunches and dinners free, for you to make your own delicious food discoveries. At the

end of the day, hand-picked quality accommodation will ensure a comfortable night’s sleep. While flights, travel insurance and visas are usually not included in the base tour cost, we can assist in organising these for you.

What’s included • Guaranteed departure • All included sightseeing and entrance costs • Quality, hand-picked accommodation • A highly experienced Peregrine tour leader • Gratuities for services received as part of tour • Many meals (as indicated) • Additional specialist guides and porters • Airport arrival transfer • 24-hour emergency support from our local team peregrineadventures.com // 3

Small group journeys Final - USE THIS ONE

For some companies, the term ‘small group’ means sharing a bus with 45 other people. Not us. On a Peregrine tour you’ll be travelling in a group of, on average, just ten people. So when we say small group journeys, we mean

it. You’ll get more personal and attentive service from your local leader, make lasting friendships and explore places off limits to the larger tour groups (like that tiny seafood barbecue restaurant in Essaouira or little Parisian

boulangerie). With fewer travellers in our groups, you’ll spend less time waiting around, and more time seeing the sights. It’s also how we reduce our travel footprint, preserving local experiences for future generations.

TRAVELLER TALES

What a wonderful, hassle free holiday to Italy. We got a real taste of what the beautiful country has to offer with a fantastic leader and a great itinerary.

Russia was an amazing destination – and the enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides helped to make it a very memorable experience.

Kate Marshall, Secrets of Italy

Sharon Butterfield, Essential Russia

Ideal for travellers who want to have an input into the day’s activities but need local knowledge and assistance. Let Peregrine do all the hard work and just enjoy and discover the local history and culture.

Local Leaders Final - USE THIS ONE

Twenty years ago, we became the first travel company of our kind to exclusively employ Englishspeaking local leaders, born and raised in the regions we visit. Who better to get to the heart of a destination with than the people

who live there? Our local leaders know more than just historical dates and trivial facts. They’ll share their stories, help you find hidden highlights (that you won’t find in a guidebook) and provide you with practical information on etiquette,

safety and speaking the language. Our small group size means more access to your guide’s incredible local knowledge, to ask questions, or get insider info on great local cuisine and hidden hot spots. In a nutshell, they’ll look after you.

“Travelling makes me feel alive. Sharing my passion with people makes me very happy, especially when I get to do it in my home country, Italy.”

“Being a tour leader is my dream job. All the beautiful cities, national parks, historical events, music, food and meeting new people from all over the world gets me going!”

“Because of our smaller group size, we spend less time checking into hotels and getting on (and off) transport, and more time seeing the incredible sights of Morocco!”

Accommodation Final - USE THIS ONE

Hand-picked, quality lodgings Travelling in small groups means we aren’t restricted to staying in larger chain hotels. It means our destination experts can seek out smaller quality hotels, that better reflect the style of the region. All of our accommodation is carefully hand-picked for its quality, amenities and convenient location, so you can spend less time checking in, seeking out a wifi signal or lining up for the breakfast buffet, and more time soaking up a destination over a glass of wine.

Exclusive Feature Stays Almost all of our small group tours include at least one night in a Feature Stay – a stand out property that offers a deeper level of cultural immersion or unique perspective of a destination. It could be a former British Embassy in Greece, a sumptuous riad in Meknes or a Galician manor house. Look for the Feature Stay stamp throughout this brochure for more information on some of our favourites.

Moments to Remember Final - USE THIS ONE

Seeing the famous sights is a must, but it’s often the unexpected moments that leave a lasting impression. We’ll take you beyond the highlights and travel at a relaxed pace that allows you to stop and savour each moment along the way. Throughout this brochure, you will see ‘Peregrine Moments’ on each of our trips. These are just a few of the special experiences you’ll have on your Peregrine trip; the highlights you’ll only have while travelling in a small group with a local leader. We’ll still get that perfect photograph of the Colosseum or hot-air balloons over Cappadocia, but hearing stories of devious plots from medieval times in Cesky Krumlov or making your own pesto with a local shopkeeper in Levanto are more likely to stand out as future memories.

Responsible Travel Final - USE THIS ONE

Responsible travel is at the core of our ethos. We employ our own local guides and staff from the destinations in which we operate; we eat in local restaurants and stay in quality, locally run accommodation that directly contributes to employment and the economy. It’s easy to be a responsible traveller; start by carrying a water bottle with you instead of buying plastic bottles to reduce rubbish, say no to plastic bags, learn a few words of the language, and respect local customs. Simple!

How we help

Our Foundation

Carbon offset travel

Support to Life (STL) is one of our Foundation-supported projects in Europe. STL work to improve the lives of those in need in Turkey and its surrounds, particularly Syrian refugees who are unable to settle in camps. A cash assistance program has been setup to support refugees with basic needs, which empowers the refugees and also generates support for the local economy. STL is currently setting up a community centre in Istanbul and the Intrepid Foundation is raising funds to support this particular initiative.

In 2002, our parent company the Intrepid Group founded The Intrepid Foundation, a not-forprofit organisation that allows our travellers to give back to the communities they visit. Since then, our Foundation has contributed more than $5 million to more than 50 non-profit organisations around the world that address issues such as education, child welfare, environmental and wildlife protection.

In order to minimise our carbon footprint and contribute to a cleaner energy future for the next generations, we carbon offset all main emissions on our trips, with no additional cost to the traveller.

Private and Tailored Travel Options Final - USE THIS ONE

We understand that some travellers would prefer to see the world with their partner, a few close friends, or on their own. If group travel isn’t for you, we’ve got a number of private travel options available; carefully curated itineraries that follow the same premium adventure style as our regular group departures.

Private groups Prefer to travel with friends or family? Our private groups team can design an itinerary based on your list of must-sees and dos. Talk to one of our Destination Experts, choose your dates and travel companions and we’ll take care of the rest.

Independent Journeys

Independent Experiences

Some travellers would rather travel with a close friend or partner, so we’ve reimagined a selection of our top itineraries for just one or two travellers. You’ll have a specialist Peregrine guide in each location but will travel independently between major stops, to enjoy the benefits of a fully comprehensive itinerary with the freedom of a private tour.

Departing for a group tour on a specific date doesn’t suit everyone. So we’ve created a range of short ‘mini tours’ that you can link together to create your own unique holiday. Designed for one or two people, take an Independent Experience before or after a small group tour, or mix and match a few Experiences to create your ideal trip combination. It’s independent travel without the stress.

In this brochure we offer Morocco Explorer as an Independent Journey. See page 37 for trip itinerary.

See pages 64 and 65 for a summary of our Independent Experiences in Turkey and the UAE.

Frequently Asked Questions Final - USE THIS ONE

Where do I find more information on a specific tour? Head to our website, type the trip name or code into the search box at the top of the page, and away you go! There’s a button at the end of each trip page that allows you to view essential trip information, such as a comprehensive itinerary, inclusions and other useful information. Do I need a visa or travel insurance? Many countries require you to have a visa before arrival. After you’ve booked your trip, we’ll send you a pre-departure checklist containing all the visa information you’ll need. It’s important to get visa sorted well in advance. Travel insurance is compulsory on all Peregrine trips.

Do I need to book flights? The prices quoted in this brochure and on our website do not include international flights, however our sales team can help you book your flights. Just ask when you’re making your booking. How do I book a tour? You can book any Peregrine trip through our website, over the phone, in person or through your local travel agent. I’m travelling on my own. Do I need to pay more? Not at all! All our trips are twinshare (solo-travelling ladies share with ladies, while gents share with gents) so there’s no single supplement to pay. If you’d prefer your own room, we can arrange this on most trips at an additional cost. Let us know when you book.

Are there age limits or do I need to have a certain level of fitness? There’s no specific age limit, however most Peregrine passengers are in their 40s, 50s and 60s. Some of our trips involve walking on rocky terrain, cycling and climbing stairs – check the physical ratings (explained below) to see if the trip is right for you. How many people will I travel with? The maximum group size on all trips is 16, however groups usually consist of about ten travellers. What’s included in the price of a tour? An experienced English-speaking leader local to the region, airport arrival transfer (most itineraries), all transport (mostly private), all accommodation, sightseeing and entrance fees, many meals.

Using this brochure Every Peregrine trip has been given a physical activity rating, on a scale of 1-5. SIGNATURE

Welcome to

Soak in the distinct regional flavours of these countries and enjoy a cultural bouquet crowned by satisfyingly simple pleasures – a traditional local meal, a walk through medieval streets or a glass of wine from a centuries-old vineyard.

Welcome to

Spain, Portugal

& Morocco

When the sun sets on a sleepy Seville afternoon, a flamenco performance can be heard and a voice swoops in slowly with a mournful croon. The life-affirming melody that echoes around the Iberian Peninsula goes beyond city and country, and dates back centuries. To the west, in Portugal, it comes through in the fado, with its tales of love and loss. To the south, in Morocco, it’s found in traditional Berber music. It’s the voice of the everyday folk – the folk you’ll encounter on a Peregrine trip. We’ll take you away from the well-worn tourist routes to the troubadours hiding in the corners and behind the doors – the ones who give their countries the rhythm and verve they are famous for. 30 // peregrineadventures.com

11 Days Day 1 Embarkation Longyearbyen Your Arctic adventure begins upon boarding your vessel. After checking into your cabin, be sure to take a stroll out on deck to savour views of Longyearbyen’s mountainous backdrop. Days 2-10 Exploring Spitsbergen Cruise around searching for wildlife. This expedition will travel to western Spitsbergen as well as some stunning fjords and outlying islands to the north. From polar deserts to immense glaciers, the natural landscape is just as varied as the wildlife. Each expedition presents new opportunities, so there will be no fixed itinerary; however, our favourite destinations include 14th July Glacier, Smeerenburg, Phippsoya, Alkhornet and the Hinlopen Strait. Each day’s destinations will be chosen for optimum wildlife viewing and appreciation of the history and geology of Spitsbergen. Seeing polar bears is almost guaranteed, as Phippsoya is one of their favourite hunting grounds. The towering cliffs of Alkefjellet is another, as the eggs laid by seabirds provide many an easy meal for both polar bears and the Arctic fox. Coming across a walrus haul-out is a moment you’ll never forget. The noise these graceless creatures produce in vying for plots of coastline is incredible, with Torellneset and Phippsoya great places for catching the action.

If you’re keen to explore Spitsbergen’s more isolated pockets at closer quarters, we recommend taking part in the seakayak program. Spitsbergen is made up of six national parks, three nature reserves, one geotopical protected area and 15 bird sanctuaries, ensuring there is an abundance of wilderness to uncover by paddle power. There is no shortage of surprises in Spitsbergen. The tundra can be very colourful in summer, with carpets of wildflower bursting for a taste of sunshine. Each day brings something new, whether this is a rare bird species or abandoned hut from centuries ago. Day 11 Disembarkation Longyearbyen The time to say goodbye has arrived. Your adventure ends as it began: in Longyearbyen. Either transfer to the airport for the flight home or spend more time exploring this unique region.

MEET THE FAMILY Run by travellers, for travellers. We’re a family of adventure travel companies, who together make up the world’s largest provider of adventure travel experiences. For more than 27 years, we’ve specialised in creating immersive, off-the-beatenpath adventures for every type of traveller – from the young to the young-at-heart – with over 1,000 itineraries in 100 countries catering to all budgets, travel styles, and appetites for adventure.

Adventures for every type of traveller Love the idea of Peregrine, but looking for more options? One of the other adventure companies in our family might be just what you’re looking for:

Run by passionate locals in more than 150 cities around the globe, Urban Adventures showcase both the world famous sites and local hotspots that make a place tick. From home-cooking classes to history lessons, or cycling excursions to social enterprises, Urban Adventures were created to give travellers a taste of what an Intrepid small group adventure feels like and can be as short as a couple of hours, or as long as a whole day.

If you’re aged 18-29, in the mood for epic adventures with other travellers your own age, your next trip may be with Geckos Adventures. We tread lightly and think locally – our trips are designed for smart, like-minded young travellers who want to avoid the big buses and explore like a local.

Intrepid’s small group adventures are for travellers of every age, budget, and appetite for adventure. From three to 365-day tours, from real food adventures to sailing, cycling or trekking adventures, Intrepid Travel is designed to cater for a diverse range of like-minded people who want to truly experience travel the local way.

Adventure Tours Australia has been leading travellers through this diverse land for 25 years. Now 100% Aussie owned, the only thing our expert local guides love more than their country is the chance to show it off. Seeing the sunset over Uluru or snorkelling Great Barrier Reef is pretty special, but we reckon it’s the stories of our people and an understanding of our indigenous culture that is fundamental to truly bringing the real Australia to life.

We’re committed to having a purpose beyond profit: supporting the economies and people of the communities we visit, reducing our global footprint by carbon-offsetting our trips, and respecting local customs and culture. Responsible travel is a big reason we do the things we do. It’s why, way back in 2002, we set up The Intrepid Foundation. Its purpose was pretty simple: to empower travellers to make a difference and to help communities in the places we visit. We cover 100% of the administration costs and for every $1 a traveller donates we double it.

Tailor-made trips Whether you want to create a journey with your friends or set out with just the two of you on your own adventure, we can help. Find out more: privategroups@intrepidgroup.travel 72 // peregrineadventures.com
