Condover | St James, Southern Peninsula

L iving by the Sea

What is it about living by the sea that holds such eternal appeal? Could it be those early morning moments of waking up with the sun, slipping out of your sleeping attire and into a bathing suit, grabbing a towel and wandering down to the shoreline, performing a few sun salutations before submerging yourself into the invigorating salty blue? Could it be the ever changing moods, tones, currents and colours of the ocean, that somehow nurtures a reassurance of our own temperament? Could it be those barefoot frolics on the boardwalk with our favourite people, for hours on end, lapping up the rays as the waves lap over the sand, marking their perpetual patterns of life? Could it be the culture of the community that comes with it; the clusters of cafés, curious vintage stores and dusty bookshops, ice cream hatches and quaint garden nurseries with their blooms spilling out onto the walkways? Could it be all of it, alongside the romantic notion of the person we become beside the sea? The living, breathing creative connoisseurs of our imagination, birthed into motion. With wild sun bleached hair and a salty swagger in our steps, we find ourselves living our best lives.

Condover | St James, Southern Peninsula

Right on the Beach Duiker House, is the much loved home of two people, one an architect. They have lavished love and attention on it, finessing every detail with custom-made appurtances such as flat arched sash windows, wide architraves and indigenous woods. As a friend used to say, “There is nothing like staying in a loved home.”

Tropical

s i s Oa

Five ensuite bedrooms pivot from the hub of the home where the kitchen opens out to the entertaining, dining and lounging spaces, taking in the fabulous views of the estate’s terrain, its glossy green golf course, and all the way out to the ocean. Warm brown tones of Herringbone flooring connects each space together, with floor-to-ceiling slide-away glass doors, raised rattan ceilings, fancy gas lift pop-up shutters that open out to the lovely courtyard and its swimming pool, a downstairs cinema and a study overlooking a Koi pond. An African-Asian amalgamation of style and symphony has been planted and grown to seed bearing its beautiful fruit down every corridor, around every corner and lingering in every crevice of this hideaway.

Escape the Buzz This home is the artist owner’s retreat…and, without wishing to sound too much of a tree-hugger, the home holds a palpable sense of her joy in abandoning all the doing our complex world demands and, for a while, simply being.

Wings | Struisbaai

The Old Barn | Koringberg

Retreat to the

Country The Old Barn, previously a much-loved restaurant at the entrance to the village (the sun room was the original bar), is next door to the boutique vineyards of Wildehurst Winery and right on the main road. There’s a real sense of community here, from the moment the resident peacock sounds out a welcome cry as the gate opens. By sunrise, neighbouring cocks crow on cue and your country clock is set! But waking at dawn is the best time to experience this little village and breakfast outside as the sun slowly lights up the private stoep is slow and lazy. Just the way it should be.

Sophia’s Retreat | Durban North, KZN

You cannot help but fall in love with this home, perfectly positioned right in the heart of the ever popular KwaZulu-Natal north coast suburb of Durban North. Its modern take on Balinese-inspired architecture transports you to a different land. The family behind this property have clearly woven their travels and all their eclectic finds, artworks and chandeliers that come from those travels, into a space unlike any other. With unobstructed 180-degree views over the lush, tropical vegetation and sea beyond, Sophia’s Retreat nestles perfectly into its postcardperfect backdrop.

Penhill Manor House | Toontjiesrivier, Nuy Valley

Farmstyle

Chic

It’s rare to find a country retreat as unique and authentic as Penhill. A scenic 90-minute drive away from Cape Town, you’ll spot its towering twin palms long before the outcrop of white-washed buildings set on endless emerald lawns comes into view. It is nothing short of an oasis in the ruggedly beautiful Nuy Valley, so it’s easy to imagine this wonderful historical place as it was some 300 years ago when it was built as a refreshment station on the busy route to Stellenbosch, Swellendam and Graaff Reinet, pre-dating the N1. Having been lovingly restored, Penhill has literally gone back to its roots, although, rather than a stop for the ox wagons of before, it’s now a private and very special place for groups of up to 24 people to relax and replenish body, mind and soul. And to have a whole lot of fun, too, as it’s perfectly suited for hosting fabulous parties, from formal affairs to outdoorsy bashes that make the most of the glorious natural surrounds.

Penhill Manor House | Toontjiesrivier, Nuy Valley

There are dams and pools for splashing about in, a court for tennis as well as boules and croquet, not to mention trails for gentle walks, more strenuous hikes and runs, and mountainbiking. While there are dozens of lovely, picturesque spots where everyone can gather for meals, teas, sundowners and to be sociable in general, there’s also more than enough space on the 3 500 acre property with its well-tended garden to find quiet time alone with a book. Where better for a nap than propped up under a tree beside the dam?

Thuleni Homestead | Zululand, KZN

Fuel your

Wanderlust Cowrie Cottage is an unlikely home on the KwaZuluNatal North Coast. It’s intimate and under thatch, and fits effortlessly into the surrounding coastal forest without disturbing the environment. An authentic African beach house it is, with décor reflecting a touch of White Mischief and a whole lot of Hemingway. This implies a thoroughly African cottage but with no rough edges. There are checkerboard bathroom floors and antique fittings, draped mosquito nets over beds and light shades reminiscent of fish traps, a few accents of kuba cloth and zebra hide are seen in ottomans and there’s plenty of crisp white linen swathing the queen beds. There’s an inside fireplace too, which is a rarity on this balmy coast but is thoroughly romantic.

Bombora | Plettenberg Bay, Garden Route

Summer in Plett The wonderful thing about the hugely popular seaside town of Plettenberg Bay is its access to the burgeoning wilderness, the beautiful beaches and ocean wildlife – and with that – its plethora of activities for those seeking the thrill of adventure. Whether it be up the craggy mountains on bikes or on foot, or into the deep blue of the ocean paddling and surfing boards, or diving and foraging for that catch of the day, this iconic spot on the eastern end of the Garden Route is home to a myriad of escapisms. With it comes clusters of colloquial communities, scattered along the shoreline, at the foothills of the Tsitsikamma Mountains. Trendy cafés and delicatessens, daily markets and fabulous fish eateries, holistic retreats, world class polo grounds and golf courses, are what makes this destination more than just a place for a beach holiday. And a fabulous beach holiday at that.

Touchstone | Clifton, Atlantic Seaboard

In the heart

of Cape Town Who can resist the allure of Clifton, with its turquoise waters and string of exceptional white-sand beaches sheltered by massive granite boulders? One of the world’s sexiest beach destinations, Clifton is a heady mix of the best Cape Town has to offer – truly exceptional natural beauty combines with a glamorous yet laidback beach scene. This is sunshine living at its most vibrant.

Cowrie Cottage | Ballito, KZN

Palm Spring | Newlands, Cape Town

Uber-cool

and

Magical Settled down a cul-de-sac at the base of the backside of the mountain, Palmspring opens its beautiful old circa seventies doors and escorts you in to a meticulously considered, minimalist home of style, slender lines, sunlight and sophistication.

The View | Waterberg, Limpopo

Spectacular

Surroundings

Poised at the top of a hill overlooking the golden, green and often redhued Waterberg mountains of the Marakele and Marataba National Parks, deep in the bush of the Limpopo, Cypiro Leopard Lodge beckons you in to its contemporary yet earthy environment of laidback lodge living and whisks you out to the wilderness. Its rugged stone walls gently curving beneath the tall thatch ceilings and its lovely open plan living, dining and entertaining spaces all take a reclining back seat to the breathtaking vastness of the landscape that unravels before you.

Tulela Safari Lodge | Klaserie Private Nature Reserve

Refresh in the Bush

Just escape. Go to the bush, the deep bush. Be where elephant and antelope roam, wild dogs, leopard and lion too – the full Big Five, along with so many smaller creatures with interesting lives. Take along your family and friends and make special memories together. There’s no need to share space with others because the lodge is all yours, along with 12 staff in attendance and private game viewing vehicles, guides and trackers. As far as you can see and much, much further is yours to explore. Feel free to roam. It’s bush heaven at ground level.

Bella Rosa | Tesselaarsdal, Overberg

A Gorgeous Retreat

One of the most gorgeous spots to retreat to on a weekend, the rustic little village of Tesselaarsdal has a delightfully undiscovered feel to it. Bundle the kids in the car, pack the mountain bikes, and within two hours (from Cape Town), you’ll arrive at this charming little smallholding above set on the hillside above the village. One of Bella Rosa’s original cottages is a barn-like room that dates back 100 years and is steeped in history – it housed the decendants of freed slaves until just 30 years ago as the farm was part of Johannes Tesselaar’s original farm dating back to the 1700’s, which he bequeathed to slaves in 1810.

Bella Rosa | Tesselaarsdal, Overberg

Owlswood | Magaliesberg, North West Province

Perfectly Layered

At night, when the resident nyala, zebra, impala, wildebeest, kudu, bushbuck, warthog and farm horses are all snoozing beneath the stars, under the acacias and wild figs tucked into the long grasses, or cosy in their stables, the nearby Euphorbia forest is abuzz with hoots and tweets from the resident owls that settle themselves upon the branches for the evening. A signature call of the land, high up in the mountains overlooking the Easterkloof Nature Reserve of Magaliesberg. Only the odd song of the nightjar or a whistle from the gentle breeze as it ruffles the leaves of bushwillows are likely to join the nocturnal choir of the farm. Everything else is peacefully at rest after an action-packed day on OwlsWood farm.

Owlswood | Magaliesberg, North West Province

Langskuur | Herbertsdale, Garden Route

Country Chic No more 30 minutes equally from the gorgeous beaches of Mossel Bay and the rolling plains of the Karoo, Langskuur – which means long barn in Afrikaans – opens its tall, exposed corrugated iron ceilings, rough wooden beams, raw redbrick walls and white-washed cement floors to reveal a renovation of romance, intrigue, heritage and honesty from farm pillar to post. An expansive space of antique collectables, family heirlooms and commissioned statement pieces of furniture embellish the rustic essence of the barn that’s discreetly partitioned into cosy pockets of placid occupation.

Uber-cool & New For years and years, the remote, rugged and raw little hamlet of Churchhaven has been something of a closed a book. A best kept secret to any local or honorary frequenter of the whistle-stop. With its nature conscious community of fisherman’s cottages settled down gravel roads, embedded in the wild fynbos vegetation and perched on the edge of the tidal lagoon’s beautiful blue waters, the locals’ wishes to keep this secluded sanctuary on the down-low are entirely warranted. Especially given it’s just over an hour’s drive from Cape Town, in the untamed terrain of the West Coast National Park.

Flamingo | Churchhaven, West Coast

Kurland Villa | Plettenberg Bay

Escape to

Plett

A stay at Kurland is all about wide open spaces and the sense you’re living that rustic life – in style.

Palm House | Constantia, Cape Town

Live amoung

Palms

There’s always luxury in a decorating style that rates over-scaled dimensions as one of its key elements. Palm House, an Englishman-inAfrica-style country house in Constantia, has it in bucket loads.

Quarry House | Higgovale, Cape Town

In the

City

On a flank of Table Mountain, The Quarry House is in a wooded neighbourhood called Higgovale. Just above the city centre, and yet spiritually a million miles from it, it looks east towards the morning sun and out to the Hottentots Holland mountains in the distance. The owner, a South African, London-based theater director, wanted to go up as far as possible: ‘The house seems to float above Cape Town.

Swartberg House | Prince Albert, Karoo

Escape to the

Stillness Whitewashed Swartberg House sits in a field on the edge of Prince Albert. Olive groves and vineyards, acacias and veld plants, surround it and it’s well fortified not against attack by wild tribes from the mountains but against the heat of the summer.

Tankwa River Lodge | Tankwa Karoo

Relax in the

Karoo

Tankwa River Lodge, is ideal for those that want to get away and have some real down time! The 300-year-old homestead is off-grid but the house has solar lights, romantic candles and paraffin lanterns (which for me is already half way to slowing down). But as soon as you head out to Sutherland, at the turn off at Matjiesfontein, the ancient Karoo landscape works its magic. The road weaves through harsh but beautiful hills, opening up as you cross the boundary into the Northern Cape and head left on 33kms of dirt road, ending at Blaauwheuwel Farm. Open the gate and follow the white stones downhill, past the quiver tree and curious horses, until you reach the historic werf, at the heart of this 2 500 hectare Karoo farm.

Noordhoek Beach House | Noordhoek, Cape Peninsula

A perfect

Beach House This classic wooden beach house has just spectacular views. The dunes, Noordhoek’s long long beach, the sea, Chapman’s Peak and the Silvermine mountains. You are spoilt for choice!

Baxter House | Boulders Beach, Simon’s Town

The relaxed, shabby-chic interior features vintage collectables, loosely slip-covered couches and junk-shop finds that sit alongside lovingly restored family heirlooms. The feeling is one of utter relaxation, and the home is simply beautiful.

House of Eels | Vermaaklikheid

Escape the

City

Found in Vermaaklikheid, the small, idyllic town far removed from the hubbub of city life, House of Eels offers its guests a dreamy respite in one of South Africa’s most beautiful, remote locations. Originally built and occupied by local draughtsman Jackson Andrew, this home shares a unique relationship with its sumptuous natural environment. Andrew was largely inspired by the organic matter of the local terrain, making extensive and imaginative use of reeds, blue gum wooden detailing, river mud, local stone and discarded ironwork found on the surrounding land.

Eikehof Farm | Worcester

A perfect

Farm

Named for the stately oak trees that have graced Eikehof for eons, the farmstead stands firmly on historic Cape Dutch foundations. Eikehof may be just 12 km from Worcester, but it’s centuries away from the craziness of 21st century life. Here, you can step back 200 years and be steeped in the authentic and genteel lifestyle of yesteryear. It’s easy to imagine Lady Anne Barnard visiting this gracious farm, because she actually did.

Grotto Bay | Grotto Bay, West Coast

This classic wooden beach house is perfect for the whole family as it is a short walk through the fynbos to the beach. Decorated in a lovely simple beach style – enough fuss to feel spoilt but easy to maintain for a wonderful holiday.

Oasis on Glen | Camps Bay, Cape Town

Oasis on

Glen

It’s decidedly rare to come across a beach bungalow that attains such history and notoriety in its bold, contemporary bones, overlooking an enviable stretch of sand and surf. One of the very first houses in Camps Bay, what was once a farmhouse, dating all the way back to 1890, Oasis on Glen cushions itself into the boulders and emerges from the burgeoning thicket of the Glen. Having recently been reconstructed and rejuvenated into a marvellous, modern, seaside home, this hideaway elegantly rests on the rocks, opening out to the ocean’s elements and maximising on the spectacular views of the mountain and her Twelve Apostles.

Lookout House | Plettenberg Bay

This is a much loved family home that has space for all. We especially love the outdoor room with an open fireplace for chilly evenings and large couches for drinks before dinner- or spend the day here reading and relaxing whilst the kids splash in the pool on the ground level. Also great is the two downstairs bedrooms off the playroom for the children.

The Aven | Camps Bay, Atlantic Seaboard

There’s a reason why the sprawling seaside suburb of Camps Bay has the reputation that it does. For its beautiful stretches of squeaky white beaches, along a coastline of coves, where crashing waves hit granite boulders, creating pockets of salty turquoise paddling pools. Its spectacular views of the mountain’s apostles and craggy lion’s head. Its grand promenade of restaurants, boutiques, cocktail bars and cafés. Its architectural opulence carved from the winding coastal roads. Arguably the proverbial holiday hotspot for a blingy-beach getaway, Camps Bay will always deliver on every front. It’s a destination unto itself. Whatever the weather, the ocean will draw you out with its eternal tide, the vastness of the skies will draw you up to the top of the mountain, and the sounds of the resident guinea fowl and hadedas will make it all feel so rural.

Cypiro Leopard Lodge | Waterberg, Limpopo

Poised at the top of a hill overlooking the golden, green and often red-hued Waterberg mountains of the Marakele National Park, deep in the bush of the Limpopo, Cypiro Leopard Lodge beckons you in to its contemporary yet earthy environment of laidback lodge living and whisks you out to the wilderness. Its rugged stone walls gently curving beneath the tall thatch ceilings and its lovely open plan living, dining and entertaining spaces all take a reclining back seat to the breathtaking vastness of the landscape that unravels before you.

Ezulwini | Clifton, Atlantic Seaboard

Uber-cool

Clifton Nestled along the iconic coastal stretch of Victoria Road Ezulwini, meaning heaven, offers a serene respite, seemingly far-removed from the city’s seasonal crowds. This is a home for all seasons. Its expansive foldout glass doors open onto an ever-changing panorama of sea, sand and sky. Reclining on one of the plush sofas in the living area, you might feel as if you never want to leave this seaside sanctuary! The interior is flooded with natural light, beautifully curated in a rich beachside palette of sandy hues with a touch of something nautical. The open-plan kitchen is perfect for leisurely, late lunches with loved ones or making dinner as the sun sets over the Atlantic. The main living area spills onto a fabulously spacious deck, bordered on one side by a swimming pool, it makes for an idyllic spot to cool off. With its high ceilings and original wooden floors, this house lends itself wonderfully to modern living with a touch of old-world seaside holiday whimsy, like the delightful brass portholes salvaged from ships.

Hope House | Oranjezicht, Cape Town

Grand and with good bones. It might well be a passing reference to a duchess of some standing in society of the 1920s. But it is embodied in one’s first sight of the antique rose coloured exterior of Hope House with its glorious architectural proportions and what seem countless visual aspects from its setting high on the slopes of Oranjezicht. Secluded garden areas open up to a sky view of Table Mountain and a distant city roofscape that becomes a carpet of lights by night. It is a perfect city escape yet only minutes from the best of Cape Town from restaurants to galleries and the harbour beyond. The house has three distinct levels; the lower floor is an entirely separate wing with two bedroom suites, private entrance, living and dining areas and a wine cellar; the ground floor living area is perfectly proportioned with both formal and informal dining areas. Off the main living area, an entertainment room has wide, comfortable settees to sprawl on and shrug off the day. On the upper level four bedrooms vie for the best views of city and mountain. These bedrooms all have their own distinct charm: one has a balcony with cafe chairs and table for a secluded breakfast; another a suntrap of a veranda.

Equestrian House | Cavalli Estate, Stellenbosch

Equestrian House has become the perfect appendage to Cavalli Estate, that has long been revered as a seamlessly stylish estate to visit. Not only for its high calibre wines and outstanding culinary experience in its voguish 100-seater restaurant and 350-seater banqueting hall, but also for its inimitable art gallery, beneath a skylit ceiling, exhibiting poignant pieces by both contemporary and classical local artists. A luxury boutique, showcasing a range of South African products occupies space next door to the rather sexy tasting room that effuses elements of a rockstar’s studio with its impressive collection of musical instruments. Some of which have been autographed by the Greats of Rock ’n Roll. There’s a sports museum, too, displaying signed rugby attire and sporting equipment encased in glass frames or hanging on rails as they would in a locker room. It all adds to an ongoing sentiment of history, patriotism and passion, with a lot of fun.

Zinkwazi Laguna | Zinkwazi, KZN

Uber-cool Zinkwazi Settled immediately on the lagoon’s edge, overlooking its clear, calming waters and all the way out towards the beautiful blue of the ocean, Zinkwazi Laguna emerges from the palm trees and banana forest like a natural extension of their roots, and plants its multistorey white contemporary timber frame upon the banks.

Tashdon Homestead | Drakensberg, KZN

Nestled amongst a yellowwood forest, adjacent a flowing river with rock pools and cascading waterfalls, surrounded by natural bamboo, ferns and a plethora of indigenous plants, this hideaway tells a family’s multigenerational story about their love for the land and relationship with its abounding nature.

Milkwood Cottage | Churchhaven, West Coast

Spend your days keeping out of the midday sun, gazing at that blue, blue lagoon or kitesurfing, sailing, paddling or taking long walks in the reserve, making sandcastles and exploreing the reserve by bicycle
