Hello. This month, I’m going to write my into fully informed of what’s in this month’s mag. We have... - Dave Barbarossa, back for more interviewing - A nice write up on our good mates, The Dash - Lost artist of the month ‘The Bears’ - Plus the usual madness from the Minx, dark revelations from our record collections and begging notices to come to a gig of ours Just sticking with the final point, we’ve had some really lovely, fun gigs of late... and one that wasn’t so fun. I won’t go naming names but there’s alot to be said for a low turnout gig where most of the room want to see you play and a packed room where few people care. Maybe that’s a bit of a sweeping generalisation but I know which one I’d rather be playing! Anyway, enough of my waffle, go read the mag.

In the club with

Dave Barbarrosa

This month we welcome back a Punk and New Wave legend, drummer extraordiaire Dave Barbe of Adam and The Ants, Bow Wow Wow, Scant Regard and laterly Cauldronated fame! 1) Hi Dave Welcome back to In the Club, you are our first returnee :-) We asked last time what you’d have like to drink in our club. So now, what song would you request to get this party started?

I’ve nailed those beats back then. Finally did it at The Hammersmith Apollo. Done. 6) If you could be any character in a film, what film and who would it be?

‘Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough’ the finest pop song ever made. Honoured to be allowed back The Alsatian in ‘Gladiator’. in. The honour is all ours Dave. 2) Cauldronated has been on the go for a year or so now, how’s it been going?

We’ve gradually built up a following. Of course, we garner a good few from my dubious past, but there’s a whole tranche of new people. Gratifying. Spurs us on. 3) How did you meet Eva your collaborator in Cauldronated?

7) You wrote your first novel last year ‘Mud Sharks’ , which we have a copy of and enjoyed very much! Do you have plans for another one?

Yep, on a final edit of my second ‘Community of Strangers’. Gotta get it out there. 8) Who’d be in your 4 piece fantasy rock’n’ roll band. Guitar, Bass, Drums and Vocals

Hendrix, Leigh Roy Gorman, John Bonham, me...how very odd I am. As a drummer herself, she came to a few of Marvin Gaye. Fuck my gigs as person interested in my drumming. 9) If Football is the current rock’n’roll, what will be next? Do you think a ‘heyday’ will ever return to She’s a pretty striking woman. I felt music. She’s . band the front to her ask compelled to an incredible performer. Evokes a few I’ve One man’s ‘heydey’ is another’s losing Carling worked with in the past. cup semi final.... 4) Despite Social Media, do you think it gets harder to get noticed these days with new projects?

Nah, cream always rises to the top. It’s the same for everyone. 5) We can’t interview the first and greatest Ants drummer without asking what it felt like to do the Dirk tour last year?

It was a great thing to do. I’ve never felt

10) What next for Cauldronated, EP’s are the thing of now (says us with our new one out now, plug, plug….) Any album plans or is that too 20th century?

We’re trying to improve in every department; material, playing, performance. Love doing it. We’d like to get and album out, but little point unless it is of a high standard. The

‘Buy This thing’ Ep is a real triumph. An real achievement born out of a couple of pints of lager in a pub. We’re all proud of it. And give us any gigs in Nov/Dec coming up you want us to plug …

We are playing: 93 Feet East, 150 Brick Lane 31st October (Free gig) and we’ve another at the ‘Queen of Hoxton’ 20th December. Where can we find you on t’internet?

‘COS the Platters still matter.. .

Dear Club fans, welcome to AVBD and The Beautiful Wolf’s monthly round up of the new, the old, the signed, the unsigned and the inspirational, from our very own musical old curiosity shop, where we pick and podcast 10( ish) tracks that turn us on... with a little help from J-Rod! Here’s a selection of the featured tracks, but you’ll have to listen to find out more :-)

This month’s featured track from The Tuesday Club, is - the best stocking filler you could imagine... ‘My Consciousness’ Get yours here http://thetcshop.com The Charlatans - With No Shoes. Taken from the Bands 1997 Album Tellin’ Stories. Having just regrouped after the death of keyboard player Rob Collins, this album proved it was business as usual from pretty much the only band to survive Baggy and Britpop and still produce perfect pop. In a previous life we met Tim Burgess at The M.E.N. arena and used the bands drumkit. They were really top blokes to a man! AVBD also recommends Tim Burgess’ book, also called Tellin’ Stories too, which he just read on hoilday! See the band here playing No Shoes on the 1997 Jools Holland Hootananny http://youtu.be/0zzhIcEKppg

GirlBand - lawman We played Dublin’s youbloom festival in June. But it took Dave Worm AVBD to visit the Horn in St.Albans to see Dublin’s best band. Get to their bandcamp while you can as there are still some FREE gems like this to download! http://youtu.be/nqxe3NZKYL0

feature fairly regularly, (well them’s the perks of doing yer own mag, innit!)... This classic from the Children of The Revolution single of 1972, formed part of a fabulous joint B-Side with Sunken Rags. It’s included this month as this podcast was recorded on 16th September, the 37th Anniversary of Marc’s death. http://youtu.be/NSnr8K81PMs Nick Haeffner - Back in time for tea A track from St.Albans’ Bam Caruso records archive from 1986. Good times featured on the 12 single The Master, which recieved high acclaim from the legendary’s John Peel and Jon Savage a described it as ‘...reminiscent of the best of English psychedelia’

Scant Regard vs. AkA - Play Loud (Scant A Dog Mix) Trade We definitely played Scant Regard in September... but that was from the last album... here’s something new from Mr.Crewdsons original ‘other Bow Wow Wow - Chihuahua band’. We loved supporting him at Aces and Eights on 23rd of Oct. Taken from the 1981 LP See Jungle See Jungle Go Join Your www.scantregard.com Gang Yeah, City T.Rex All Over Go Jitterbug Ape Crazy! Love Featuring Dave Yes yes, Barbe - in this we know... guise - just another having been band who

snatched by Malcolm Mclaren along with fellow Antz Ashman And Gorman... but now as we can thankfully relay back where he belongs... http://youtu.be/E12kuz-GaMg Adam and The Ants - Press Darlings. The B-side of the legendary Kings of the Wild Frontier. also from 1981. Adam’s b-sides were easily as good if not better than the A’s. Proof your honour perfect here with this FAB live version. http://youtu.be/eZWaIhAk88w

This months great lost artist is The Bears from Watford, thanks to David Gomm for his blog entry and info on this seminal Punk band, who morphed (along with new recruits) following their demise into one of the TC’s FAVE bands of the era, The Tea Set. Here’s a full list of the bands members: Mick North, John Entrails - Vocals, George Gill : Guitar, Kris Kershaw : Saxophone, Ron West, Bob Brimson, Tim Brockett - Bass, Cally Cameron, Phil Howstan - Drums The Bears were formed in Watford in 1976, after founding member and guitarist George Gill had ‘left’ an early incarnation of Wire – by all accounts for having too strong an affinity for blues-based music and not enough for the emerging ‘learn 3 chords and form a band’ mentality of the new wave. Originally called Smarter and the Average Bears, they wrote and played songs generally far-removed from their contemporaries. I caught a very early gig of theirs at Hemel Hempstead town hall Cellar Club in summer ’77, just before singer and songwriter Mick North was tragically killed in a road accident ( along with Pete Perspex from fellow punksters the Paper Dollies in September ’77) The band re-emerged with vocalist John Entrails (also from the Paper Dollies) and released a fabulous single –‘on me’ - on Waldo’s Jazz Club label, in a variety of coloured sleeves. The flip-side was an extended jam of another stage favourite – ‘what’s up mate?’ – featuring the short-lived member Kris Kershaw on saxophone. Again – I saw this line-up at Hemel Hempstead Arts’ Centre (supported by Johnny Curious and the strangers) towards the end of ‘77 ‘On me’ was recorded in glorious stereo ‘live’ at Waldo’s in Watford – that is to say without an audience and generally no overdubs (although the single release of ‘On me’ does have a guitar overdub). The rest of the takes from that session came out on an impossible-to-find album – in the mid-80s, on Tigerbeat records and remains the only other recorded product by the Bears, other than the second single – ‘Insane’ - and the outstanding track on the ‘farewell to the Roxy’ album –‘fun, fun, fun’. ‘Insane’, was an excellent single – although departing from the Bears’ usual wacky and fun subject matter. Feedback, wailing guitars and a generally gothic approach, did suitable justice to one of Mick North’s finest songs – although this version of the band did not feature Ron West (bass) and I believe was cut in Northern Ireland on Good Vibrations records and coupled with ‘Decisions’ which was credited to a surname outside of the band’s past and present line-ups.

In the club EXTRA! With Luke Hinton

proved somewhat elusive This month we welcome local promoters. Juicebox. Luke has with the frequency of over the last few months due to a real upsurge in local activity, fortune taking on cosmic rising acts given a slot at The Horn on their way to fame and and our own Wasabi P proportions! At one such gig featuring Metz and Dublin’s Girlb ort band (hear them in our and AVBD, were converted in 5 mins to devotees of the supp podcast and make your own mimds up).

1)) OK firstly, we are sitting in the cyber pub doing this interview, and it’s our round. What do you want to drink? A cider for me, with ice 2) Juicebox is building a reputation for bring in new and exciting bands, how do you gauge a night as being a success? There are many factors that we base it on. The obvious being how busy was it, however for us the thing that we want to see is that everyone has enjoyed themselves. So are the bands happy, are the people that have bought tickets happy and are the venue management happy. 3) Is Punk rock dead or alive? Punk rock as a music genre in it’s traditional sense is (just) alive, like any form of music it has evolved and many of the bands in the mid 00’s took a 21st Century take on it, with bands such as The Libertines and The Strokes. However I believe that a lot of what punk rock was about has become a cliché of itself so you find bands trying to ‘act’ punk and do things what people expect rather than being themselves. 4) Can you tell us the act that has most surprised you on Juicebox in terms of how good they were? So many great acts to choose from! London

Grammar we’d heard a few demos before giving them their first ever live show, I think after watching them perform everyone there that night knew they were destined for big things. Bo Ningen and Slaves also really jump out.

5) Is there ever an age when you’re too old to rock’n’roll? As long as you’re still loving what you do then you’re never too old! 6) In terms of new bands is the Internet help or hindrance? Without doubt it’s a help, things such as social media, sound cloud, youtube are all free services that if utilised the right way can help build exposure for the band. 7) If Football is the current rock’n’roll, what will be next? Do you think a ‘heyday’ will ever return to music. Music has never stopped being popular it’s just changed due to technology and the attitude of the current teen generation. Different generations will like a different sound to that previous and more often than not the sound will be influenced by their parents generations taste in music. In the early-mid 90’s there was a 60’s vibe attached to the music, by the late 90’s it was more pop orientated with a big 70’s revival, a lot of acts now have an 80’s feel, with a

movement towards shoe-gaze and Britpop starting to come through with new acts. 8) You are now In The Club, but what club do you actually wish it was? For nostalgic reasons the Haunted Hanger Indie Disco at The Pavilion in Hemel Hempstead, I spent every other weekend going there in the mid 90’s. 9) What question haven’t we asked you that you wish we had? What was the first gig you ever went to? - Mine was Simple Minds at Wembley Arena in 1988 10) Who’d be in your 4 piece fantasy rock’n’ roll band. Guitar, Bass, Drums and Vocals Guitar - Keef Richards Bass - Mani Drums - Keith Moon Vocals - Liam Gallagher Where can we find you on t’internet?

juiceboxindie.com @Juicebox_Indie fb.com/JuiceboxIndie

And can you please draw us a pretty picture … //o-o\\ - John Lennon And give us any gigs in Nov/Dec coming up you want us to plug In November The Horn celebrates 40 years as a live music venue, so lots of great gigs planned throughout the month. Best thing to do is check the Juicebox websites or The Horn (thehorn.co.uk) as there loads of shows that will suit all music tastes!

1.

Emma McGrath

I know I have written about this young singer songwriter on more than one occasion but she really is that good! And now finally she is releasing her debut EP of original songs at Trestle for The Live Music Project which I am absolutely thrilled about! At the time of writing this the EP name is still undecided but what I can tell you is that it will be 5 or 6 original tracks all recorded at the marvellous Grand Chapel Studios. And this track called ‘Honey’ will be on it! Emma is certainly one to watch so please take a minute to have a listen and then you can say you knew her music before….. Or even better come & see her at Trestle on 29th November! Who

Quick! Dash to discover - THE DASH Every so often, as if seemingly from nowhere, along comes a band that makes you sit up and take notice. Not because they have reinvented the rock n’ roll wheel, or they are producing something so musically unique, or radically different, you can’t ignore them. Nor, do they actually just appear from nowhere with fully formed fan base and popularity. Most bands who do eventually rise from the gloom, to feel the sun on their face, have a long, arduous background of hard graft on the gig circuit and the fact that it appears they have just beamed down from planet nowhere and hit the ground running is, in most cases, an illusion.

Berlin, in a new Impulse fragrance, ‘Lovely Rock’, commercial, where they can be seen smashing their way through their version of the Phil Spector classic, ‘Baby I Love You’.

And so it has been with London based, The Dash. For those reading this, wondering what the fuss is about, The Dash are simply providing that little something so bereft and missing in current guitar based rock n’ pop music.

youtube.com/watch?v=HXM_AUKc2nY#t=14

Read on

A few years of non-stop gigging, anywhere and everywhere has seen them craft their live show to a fabulous frenetic frenzy of uncompromising fury (I love a bit of cheap alliteration, me) and are now turning in some infuriatingly infectious, ear wormy songs, so tangible you can almost pluck them from the air as they blast from y’ speakers. Now being touted as the long awaited British riposte to The Ramones, Stooges and New York Dolls, they are notorious for leaving the stage in a storm of broken bones, hearts and guitars. The Dash have delved back into the wealth of guitar rock history to redefine a good time. To remodel the sound of sex to the sound of scuzzy guitars. They are comfortable, immersed in the familiar yet murky waters of 60’s US garage/ UK Glam/N.Y. Punk/ U.K. punk/Post punk… oh you know all the stuff… They wear their influences like their well-worn leathers. With pride and a confident knowing. They make a virtue of utilising elements grafted from all the above genres, assimilate, assemble and emerge from the Dash laboratories, sparkling

The advert stacked up over 150,000 Youtube views in the first four weeks of airing alone… Watch it here if you feel an urge… Despite some line-up changes, this is the Year of The Dash. On a local note, new boy drummer, Gareth Taylor is a born and bred Hemel lad and, it must be said, he does bring a refreshing - streets of Hemel Hempstead - energy, to the already powerful live sound. Actually, the band are between bass players at the moment, relying on friends to jump in when gigs come a callin’. So, any sharp, young gun, pretty punk with attitude, bass players out there, looking for a hot tip, make yourselves known. The rise of The Dash has found them pitching up at some remarkable gigs, playing alongside such acts as Morrissey, Patti Smith, Prince, Biffy Clyro, Dirty Pretty Things’ Carl Barat, The Gossip, Black Lips and even on request of Mighty Boosh, IT Crowd star Matt Berry. They were invited to support old mates, Babyshambles in front of 1,000’s, they were involved in the collaboration of, and headlined, the Iggy Pop festival IGGYFEST with (Blockheads, Madness, PJ Harvey and Tom Waits right-hand man Terry Edwards). They have played chaotic underground parties in Europe and continue to front their own packed-out residencies in London. The Dash latest single, “Love Will Always be The End”, released on October 13th, on Tin Pan records has already been played on BBC radio by Gary Crowley, Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson and Shell Zenner on Absolute Radio. I do believe our very own Denise Parsons may give it a spin very soon, on her new show, on Verulam Radio. Their debut single “3 Times More”, was released earlier this year.

with the perspiration of a task well done, holding up bright, crafted, musical gems to delight. And… Without wishing to sound too glib, they really are a band for the ladies… if you like it dirty... Fuck off pretty boy bands, The Dash are in town. In fact, this messy haired, sharp-heeled bunch of heartbreakers were hand-picked to star alongside German model Laura

THE DASH recently played a full on show at the Horn, in September, and it was there they secured the surprising Amble Inn gig in Harpenden. Cue raised eyebrows and incredulous squeaky voices- “The Dash? At the Amble!?” - For those who know, The Amble Inn is a venue best known for supporting local music but, for The Dash, this is in full keeping with their ethos. To play anywhere and everywhere, to get their exciting sounds and catchy songs across to anyone who will listen. For them, the Amble Inn is as good a venue as any, if not better than their regular London venues, as they will be rising to the challenge of playing to a local crowd, as yet unconverted to the way of THE DASH…

2.

Thom Worth

I found this young man at Nick Stephenson’s open mic on a Wednesday at The Boot. Nick’s open mic nights are always a great night of local music. And you can find gems like Thom. He was doing a solo set that was thoroughly engaging and a top quality performance. I really liked it and am eager to hear more! He has a band too and I am pleased to say that they will be performing at Trestle in the near future. Have a listen & see what you think. The audience in The Boot certainly enjoyed it.

3.

Blue Tongued Skinks

The lead singer from this band did an acoustic set with Jason from Bright Conclusions for me at Trestle and I was very impressed with his voice and decided to check out what his full band sounded like and they’ve got a great sound for a young band. I love it when I find a young band like this with so much potential! I will be booking these guys to so lots of great acts coming up for The Live Music Project next year!

4.

Li Li

A gorgeous blond & a fantastic singer songwriter who has a lovely voice and delivery of catchy hazy jazzy songs. My current favourite is called ‘Lads night out’ have a listen to the words! I am really pleased that she is now performing more regularly around town & in fact at Trestle last month where she definitely had the audience in her hand and picked up a lot of new fans!
