Roger, our (excellent) keyboard player (keyboardist?) has recently turned me onto BBC Four documentaries about bands n such. Beforehand, they were the sort of programme I watched if I couldn’t find anything else to watch but now, they’ve become something of an obsession. What’s really fascinating to me are the programmes about how other bands function. We TCers are a fairly democratic bunch - we don’t often argue and if there is a difference of opinion, it’s usually worked out fairly smoothly. You would have thought that, for example, Mr Worm and myself would clash, as we share guitarist duties but, truth is, we allow space to let each other manoeuvre. While we wouldn’t ever employ a public school-type Creative Director (like those through and through wankers Coldplay - call yourself a band? Ad agency more like), we do spend a bit of time actually considering what we do within this band, rather than trying to get one up on one another. Having hung round bands at this level constantly since I was about 15 and also, witnessed (first hand in one case) how high profile bands seemingly fall apart when money becomes a factor, it honestly makes me wonder why the filthy lucre destroys relationships. Something that was once undertaken for pure pleasure suddenly has a monetary value stuck on it and attains some values that would have seemed ludicrous just a few years prior. Personally, while I enjoy playing live, the main pleasure I get from being in a band is writing songs and recording. That’s what does it for me. Obviously I can’t speak for all of the band but I get the general feeling that we, as a unit, get more from music than just trying to make some cash out of it (and, to be fair, we could, in theory, change overnight into a covers band and charge two to three-hundred notes a gig to play Mustang f*****g Sally (sic) to people. It’s just not what we would do). One final point; I recently went to an open mic night with me dad back home in Swansea (or more correctly, where he hails from in Llanelli). It wasn’t in a particularly well off area and it wasn’t the poshest pub in the world but, maybe due to that, all of the people that were there seemed to genuinely enjoy what they were doing and also, appreciate others too. Not one person tried to flog you their latest CD, no-one tried to plug their next gig and no-one was there with an agenda, bar to have a good time down the pub with whoever was in there at the time. All rather refreshing. Anyway, all of that aside, here are some dates for your diary for the next ‘tour’ for our next EP (yes, I realise that makes me sound hypocritical but this is an e-zine, not a knockabout open mic night, so we can present you with information!). The next EP will be a pretty colour too, so keep an eye out for that too. Right, I’m off to finish watching the programme about Freddy Mercury as I think AVDB wants me to tell him all about it when I’m done ;) Toodle-pip

DAMinx It’s not always easy to know who you are talking to at Tuesday Club gig. Looking for the cowbell

The Minx Agony Column Monday (Monday) Is confusing having month called May, when word exist in English language. May give permission to do thing and so when Minx ask questions like “ when this thing deliver” and delivery minion say “May” it sound like he being cheek. May do, may don’t, may be, may won’t. Also word of Mayday in English language have two meaning. One is nice Bank Holiday where picnic and dancing with Morris Minor Men happen. Other is panic stations and all hand on deck, emergency landing. How can mean the same? Is confuse. No amount of English lesson can make Minx understand. England is very confusing place to live. Patron Saint is from Turkey (though not actual bird of Turkey), nobody seem to know who is or when his day is. Favourite dish is from India, and Queen is German. What this mean? It mean England as confused as Minx and so all is well with world. Tuesday (Tuesday) Club of Tuesday should happen this day, but as band rehearse on Monday is even more confuse and stupid. Should change name to Monday Club or Happy Mondays. Ah. Builder Minion say band already call that. Pah. They should change THEIR name, Tuesday Club and Minx much more important #morecowbell Wednesday (Wednesday) Usual day of Twitter and reply to adoring fan, and also try to complete project to breed dog back to wolf. Perestroika have puppies and she very proud fierce mother. Kalashnikov also very proud father. I have call number one dog pup #morecowbell. Is first dog in world to have this name, and also have hashtag as name, though apparently there is human in world with actual name of hashtag. Is ridiculous. Anyway, tweet the world with #morecowbell and receive reply from project #morecowbell with #morecowbell. The world is good. #morecowbell Thursday (Thursday) Cleaner come. I tell her of new puppies. She post on Facebook but put picture with caption name of baby dog as #morecobweb. Stupid woman. Have docked wages for week (dogged wages for a week Kha Kha Kha - Russian joke) and sent home in disgust. Minion most upset as now he have to finish off clean. I explain him the problem of stupid name of dog now on Facebook and how is not promote the name of #morecowbell nor campaign for #morecowbell. He manage to hack into cleaner Facebook (password: password) and edit post. Minion is hero and is in good books (though not THE Good Book as that would Bible and he not old enough). I give him cleaning lady wages as treat and tell him not to spend all at once.

Friday (Friday) Kennel Club will not accept new breed of dog. Even their suggest of tick box of Caucasian Shepherd not acceptable. I know this dog from childhood as Grandparent used use them to hunt bears. Is dominant dog from mountains of Russia, but is not my beautiful new breed of WolfDog. Beside is much more fluff than Perestroika, Kalashnikov and now new arrivals #morecowbell, SuperFocusStrong, 6, Uzi and Transylvania. He named after favourite summer residence, but he seem quite strange Wolfdog that do not try to chew shoe but almost try get in shoe and wear. Has already been caught stealing Minx feather boa from bedroom to line puppy basket and sleep nicely. Builder Minion call him ‘funny one’ but is not funny to find Minx red shoe not in correct place and possible near little dog chewing mouth. Though as said before, little Transylvania do not seem to like chew shoes, just be near them. Saturday (Saturday) Have already taught #morecowbell to play cowbell with wagging tail. Will send video to “You’ve Been Framed” and accept £250. Will address to Mr Harry Hill, though Minion tell me this strange telly man is Doctor? DOCTOR?? Doctor of what? Oh. Doctor What! Is this like Doctor Who? Is Harry Hill time lord? Would be useful for this Harry Hill to take Minx to future to see if breeding program successful and true WOLFDOG win Crufts. And also, if Minx perhaps have new Minion. NOTE: Minion just read my diary and start to sulk. No, stupid Minion not NEW Minion as in NEW Minion, NEW Minion as in ANOTHER Minion, like when Builder Minion decide to stay on Minx command. Will never be another Minion.* воскресенье (Sunday) Minx look forward to today. Is Sunday, day of rest. Minx do nothing. Minion do less than normal but still every day chores. Oh and also include new dog duties now that family has grown. Minx need bigger house for new family! And bigger car for transportation. But refuse to get thing called People Carrier. Sound stupid. Also thing called Winnebago. Like look of something call motorhome (is good enough for driver of F1) but refuse call it Winnebago. Sound like name of old woman. Sunday good day to do nothing but shop online for motorhome. Cannot decide between this http://50ft.net/1bllOjc or this ... http://50ft.net/1GltFbx

*Disclaimer - unless Minion disobey one too many time, then Minx have right to relieve Minion of Minion number one status and if really bad, of ANY Minion status leaving Minion Minionless. Minx has now written word Minion too many times and now forgets how to spell word. Minx also wonder why is writing own words and thinks may need Secretary Minion to do all menial administrative tasks. May put advert in magazine.

‘COS the Platters still matter.. .

Dear Club fans, welcome to AVBD and The Beautiful Wolf’s monthly round up of the new, the old, the signed, the unsigned and the inspirational, from our very own musical old curiosity shop, where we pick and podcast 10( ish) tracks that turn us on... with a little help from J-Rod! Here’s a selection of the featured tracks, but you’ll have to listen to find out more :-)

This month’s featured track from The Tuesday Club, is New Regime off ‘See You Next Tuesday’ which of course you can purchase amongst many other great trackage down at the thetcshop.com Department S - Is Vic There? Named after the 1960’s TV Series, Dept. And not just the yoof tbh, it still resonates today for certain members of the TTC! youtu.be/rUYkHNAtXTI Janes Addiction - Been Caught Stealing Taken from 1990’s Ritual De Lo Habitual album, this is THE ‘classic’ JA track in the opinion of AVBD, great bassline and even better dog bark! And great video too... youtu.be/jrwjiO1MCVs

1979-1980

The Alcoves were formed in August 1979 by four fifteen yearolds: Koy (Keith Martin), Roo (Andrew Francis), Bev (MiltonEdwards) and Olly (Sagar). Olly shared his older brother Gez’s fondness for pop music which facilitated The Alcoves sharing The Toys’ practice space in Barnet. And frequently their equipment. Anything laying around the basement was fair game. The Alcoves made their live debut at the HOY Club in Harpenden in February 1980. Their only recording that anyone can find is “I Can’t Focus” on the Stern Bops “Local Produce” compilation. After about a year of playing around North London and Hertforshire, Koy left the band in a sulk about something and formed Split Here with Olly, Dai Norman and Harvey McGavin. Kat Martin Thanks to: satellitestalbans.co.uk/bands/bands.htm#alcoves for this and all the great info!

In the club with Pete Jones

Department S

Our next guest ‘In the Club’ is Pete Jones, bassman for the ace at Department S, ACE as AVBD can testify from their recent gig e Electrowerkz in Islington that AVBD witnessed. Pete for thos r of you who aren’t in the know (like we are) was amongst othe memorables in his long career, also the bass player on PIL’s biggest selling hit ‘This is not a love song’! Pete came to see The ers Tuesday Club at our emotional return to live action at the Farm ent Boy and was kind enough to pass on a Department S endorsem of our humble little outfit... What a gent! Hi Pete and welcome to In the Club. 1) We are sitting in the cyber pub doing this interview, and it’s our round. What do you want to drink?

Depends what time it is; if it’s early it will be Earl Grey tea especially if there is any cake available. Real ale is a favourite during the colder months, with a whiskey chaser if there is a real fire and it’s cold out. Of course I advocate sensible drinking at all times, otherwise you might spill it down the front of your shirt!

If anyone has to ask this question the answer is “it is dead for you” It was, and is always about the attitude and you either have that or you don’t. 4) In terms of new bands is the Internet help or hindrance?

You’d have to ask the new bands!.. From my perspective looking back over 35 years in the business it’s just as hard as it ever was. Sure, it’s easier to record, publish and distribute your material and to connect with people worldwide, but gaining mass appeal 2) What was the last thing you heard/watched that was and getting the leverage to make a living so good you had to tell someone about it? is another matter. 3,000 facebook likes and 10,000 Twitter friends doesn’t mean zilch I got sucked into the whole Breaking Bad if they aren’t buying your music or coming thing a while ago, watching all the episodes to your shows. The good thing is people are on Netflix over the space of a couple of weeks. Loved the still doing it with a passion and the live way the story was scene seems buoyant, I meet lots of young played out. Now musicians who are just as committed to I’m watching their art as I was as a teenager so that must the spin off be a good thing. I recommend my old PiL “Better Call mate Martin Atkins’ book “Welcome to the Saul” which is music, you’re Fucked” which sums it all up also very well pretty well. made, only 5) If Football is the current rock’n’roll, what will be 1 episode per next? Do you think a ‘heyday’ will ever return to music? week though! 3) Is Punk rock dead or alive?

Two a side football with two smaller balls? I see smaller stripped-back bands are becoming more prominent such as Slaves,

Sleaford Mods, Cauldronated for example. Perhaps it’s just more economic! A Heyday in music is a really just a construct to our youth; We all have a musical heyday and it occurs when we are aged 18-25!

8) You are now In The Club, but what club do you actually wish it was?

I’m in the “Have a lie down and put Ya feet up” club...

6) What’s the best venue you’ve played/been too in the last year?

9) Who’d be in your 4 piece fantasy rock’n’ roll band. Guitar, Bass, Drums and Vocals

Playing the Rebellion and Undercover festival stages with Department S last year were really good. They both have the multiple stage thing running like clockwork with great teams behind the scenes keeping it all working. I went to the new 12 Bar club the other week and if they could sort out a decent sound system it could be a cool venue. I prefer to be on the stage than watching it, especially as there is usually more room!

Jack White on guitar Keith moon drums Bowie on vocals Me on bass OF COURSE!!

7) If you could be any character in a film, what film and who would it be?

I see myself as a John Wayne in True Grit type, but I’m probably more like Dopey out of Snow White and the 7 Dwarves to be honest.

10) What question haven’t we asked you that you wish we had?

“Where shall we send the cheque?” Thanks loads Pete For more news and info on Department S or Pete’s own Wiki page just go to one of the links below or checkout their live dates, they’re well worth a watch!

Perhaps one of the enduring purposes of the artist, poet or author is to explore that melancholia so facebook.com/groups/231169533733340 that others may feel not quite so You know that section on application forms where alone with it, to they ask if you have a disability or long term embrace the black dog rather than shun it and illness? If the truth be told I’m always tempted to stand honest if not proud as a creature of frailty simply write Melancholia. It’s such a lovely word and wicked imperfection. I’m sure like me you and so accurately describes my own condition have occasional evenings wallowing in the sweet and I’m sure that of many others. It predates the despair of some of the great melancholics – be it blues as a musical term by hundreds of years and Hank Williams, Leonard Cohen, Ian Curtis or Will lies at the heart of so much great music, art and Oldham – and prozac wash of calm can be found literature, seeping from the history of humankind through the articulation and acceptance of the yet remaining the great unspoken taboo. Indeed it demons that can become incessant voices if not was quite enough to see many locked away at the challenged by a sense of communal defiance. mercy of mad doctors seeking unspeakable cures for a darkness that they were no doubt scared to When the world appears an unbearably cruel admit lay even somewhere within themselves. domain that perhaps even whispers of sad escape Here’s a nice passage lifted from Wikipedia: there can be found a brother who speaks of shared ‘The most extended treatment of melancholia comes from Robert Burton, whose The Anatomy of Melancholy (1621) treats the subject from both a literary and a medical perspective. Burton wrote in the 17th century that music and dance were critical in treating mental illness, especially melancholia;’ But to leave all declamatory speeches in praise of divine music, I will confine myself to my proper subject: besides that excellent power it hath to expel many other diseases, it is a sovereign remedy against despair and melancholy, and will drive away the devil himself. Canus, a Rhodian fiddler, in Philostratus, when Apollonius was inquisitive to know what he could do with his pipe, told him, “That he would make a melancholy man merry, and him that was merry much merrier than before, a lover more enamoured, a religious man more devout.” Ismenias the Theban, Chiron the centaur, is said to have cured this and many other diseases by music alone: as now they do those, saith Bodine, that are troubled with St. Vitus’s Bedlam dance.

pain or a sister who shines a torch towards the tunnel end.

Whilst on tour in Germany a few years ago we noticed that a murder of crows was following our van as we travelled north. Whenever we stopped, so too would the crows, waiting on nearby grassland until we resumed our journey. At first we found them a little unnerving, sinister in their acquaintance, but after a while I began to enjoy their company, even speaking to them and alerting them to our imminent departure. The crows were simply part of our journey and to deny them or fear them would be pointless folly – anyway I kinda like crows. So it is this month I give you three poems of unapologetic melancholy, all recently posted to The Poetry Underground. One is by Joy T. Chance, another Richard Early and the last from myself. Until next time, Je suis Charlie Baudelaire! Grae J.

By Denise Parsons – Music Promoter – ‘The Live Music Project’ Trestle Arts Base, St.Albans

THIS MONTH’S TOP BANDS, ARTISTS and EVENTS! Hello everyone and a very big THANK YOU to all of you who came along and supported The Live Music Project 2nd year birthday bash! A splendid night with some top notch performances from The Trailertrash Orchestra, HubCapMoon, Cicero Buck & Neil Stanton. We laughed , we danced and we partied! Oh and I wore cowboy boots!! radioverulam.com trestle.org.uk

Anyway with May comes the start of all those festivals and outdoor musical happenings of all kinds. There are so many these days you are entirely spoilt for choice and there are lots coming up right on our doorstep featuring our local music scene. The one to mention for May would have to be the Rickmansworth Festival on the canal bank. This was a fantastic event last year as was the weather. It’s on the16th & 17th May and entry is by donation. Here’s the page for further details

rwt.org.uk/festival/festival-listing-2015/

and download a copy of the schedule – you wouldn’t want to miss anything! For me I will be wanting to see Tom Craven, Minnie Birch, Starseedz & The Anti Poet! Oh & Martin Renshaw & Garry ‘the slide’ Smith – & that’s just on the Saturday! Sunday has local favourites Oka Vanga, Dodo Bones, Caution Horses & Polkabilly Circus etc etc. so lots and lots to see & do!

So here’s some of my recommendations for this month;

1.

Henrick Solberg

Well I just fell in love with the single ‘Hello World’ and then fell head over heels for the EP too! I have played some tracks on my radio show several times and really looking forward to seeing him live in May. A young musician all the way from Norway! I would definitely recommend getting a copy of his EP -

facebook.com/solbergmusic?fref=ts

2.

Le Skiv

Had the pleasure of meeting frontman Mike Long when he came & appeared live on my radio show recently. His band was taking party in a ‘Battle of The Bands’ at The Horn in St Albans. The band is apparently still down in Hastings but Mike is a local now but hails from Canada originally and still has that lovely twang to his voice. Mike sang and played bango on the radio and it had a beautiful sound. There’s just something about bangos! Anyway the EP is well worth checking out especially a track called ‘Primary Teacher’ & seeing them live too if you can. Their sound has been described as ‘A nova scotian kitchen party’ so I asked what that was and apparently it’s where everyone brings an instrument & has a jam, in a kitchen presumably?!

facebook.com/weareleskiv/info?tab=page_info

3.

Cicero Buck

Now I have written about this husband & wife duo before so hopefully you will have seen them live at Trestle or at least checked out their pages. Thought it worth a quick mention however that their new album ‘The birth of Swagger’ is now out & available and is very good indeed! I just love Kristine’s voice and there is some lovely song writing going on there as well.

facebook.com/CiceroBuck?fref=ts

4.

Polkabilly Circus

Polkabilly Circus – Last but by no means least the latest ensemble from Paul Eccentric whose name may ring a bell from 80’s band Odd Eccentric or indeed more currently The Anti Poet & Rrants. Once seen never forgotten that’s for sure. Grabbing band members Ray fox & Lauren Merrifield from The Caution Horses & adding a bass & fiddle = Polkabilly Circus is born. I saw them for the 1st time recently & I absolutely loved it! That deep rockabilly beat that you might have got a hint at from the name! & add very well crafted and catchy songs flawlessly performed( well sort off) One thing is for sure you should always pay attention to Paul’s lyrics. The man knows a thing or two about words as you will know if you‘ve ever seen The Anti Poet! (I will talk about them more next month!) Anyway they are playing at The Rickmanswoth Festival on the Sunday so that all ties in very nicely with what I was saying earlier.
