The Christmas Club!!!

Dear Tuesday Clubbers and Pop Pickers!

Welcome to the Christmas 2019 edition of ‘In the Club’ Mag as we reach 42 issues!

Well, what a strange year it’s been all round... I won’t touch on the personal issues or the politics, I’ll stick to the stuff that makes us happy, the music! 2019 started with a bang, the return of The Minx and J-Rod to the Tuesday Club, the first 02 Islington support for 5 years (Gene Loves Jezebel and Department S) and a new single - Let The Kids Run The Country... (Yes I know I said I wasn’t going to be political)... what was lovely about that was it was our first ever TCs 7”er!

Then we followed that great show with another tremendous support slot at Harpenden Public Halls in the shape of Dreadzone... then unfortuantley the wheels came off in a rather bad summer personally, but thankfully by September we were back on track and The TCs were starting to amass some good giggage again.

First with a Balstock Fest headline, then our first return to the Horn in St.Albans for 4 years, then a storming Farmers Boy Halloween special and to round off a mad 2 months a great support to My Life Story once more at The Horn!

Phew!... squeezed into that somewhere between August and November The TCs also managed a new recording at Farm Factory Studios the first offical team up with the legend that is Dave ‘Dolly’ Doll. We at the PPCO will be sure to keep you abreast of developments of this and more new material as we excitedly look forward to a new decade!

On other matters this new issue, sees lots of new interviews from the likes of David Sinclair, Cazimi, OFFICER and Adam Ant drumming legend Jola is ‘In the Club’

We also have a great review from Pete Ringmaster of Impulsive Compulsions 4. Which completes the st of 4 FREE samplers relessed since Christmas 2018. If you haven’t yet taken the chance to download them, do so now, we promise you won’t be disappointed!

This issue also sees the finale of Reverse Family’s year of re-issuing the 365 on Video and Bandcamp, a

year which saw them approached by The British Sound Archive for inclusion in their hallowed halls!

Then there’s The Andreas and the Wolf Christmas special featuring long time favourite of the show and contributor of those classic interviews in issues 38/39 and 40 of Pete Jones, Eric Random and Stephen Malinder - Rogue Sectors Andrew Trussler. AND the first sighting of the artwork and track listing of the long awaited debut Andreas and The Wolf limited Edition vinyl LP! (due out in early 2020,).

And all of this still leaves us to mention Ringmaster’s Reviews, The Parsons Knows, Eat Life Productions, Empire Records, Atom Collector Records and Manilla PR! Finally, there’s a heartfelt tribute by Grae J Wall to his former band mate Andy Keeble who sadly passed away earlirin the year. This sad news brings us to our own moment of rememberance as we once more approach the anniversary of our great friend and driving force the one and only Terry ‘Super’ Cockell, who we have missed for 5 long years now. RIP #TTC Forever.

So there you have it another action packed editon of the mag, we are truly gratefull to all of the contributors and you for subscribing and continuing to read it, participate, share and support us live and on social media. We hope unlike all of the subsiduary elements that go to producing this and our podcasts (Issuu, mailchimp, mixcloud) to keep this mag FREE! See you all at Nambucca on 19th for a cracking Xmas party and if not in the new decade for more and more and more of the same!

NIGHT 2019

Since we last met The Tuesday Club have returned twice to The Horn in St.Albans and played a riotous (as ever) Halloween special at The Farmers Boy!

HOME

Coming Hatrick!

4 years from the last gig at the Horn The Tuesday Club played there twice in 58 days! Firstly on October 3rd with a headline show and then again on 20 November as support to Britpop Mavericks My Life Story... big thanks to James Eagles, Brad Wigglesworth, Stephen Manuel and Denise Parsons for their pics... Was great to play the Horn again especially to two such enthusiastic crowds. The first date was AVBD’s birthday, the 2nd a vastly more expensive night in terms of ticket price but still didn’t deter a great TC following and subsequent reception! As ever we are bewildered and indebted to you all! Just one more gig to go now for 2019 so hope you can all make our Christmas bash in London on 19th December in a stellar line up! She Made Me Do It/The Tuesday Club/ Scant Regard/POME at Nambucca

Will Crewdson is Scant Regard.

Also known for being the lead guitarist in Adam Ant’s band and The Selecter as well as his own Rachel Stamp and She Made Me Do It, Will really lets his roots show with this unique hybrid of guitar-driven, heavily beat-laden sci-fi mind’s eye soundtrack rage.

A slamming, grooving instant electronic rock classic with heavy pop sensibilities.

The sultry vocals of Shaheena Dax (Rachel Stamp) underpin the whole 3 minute rush while Will Crewdson (Rachel Stamp/Adam Ant band) thrashes away on guitar like a man possessed.

‘Fun and Games’ was produced by Will Crewdson and mixed to perfection by the legendary John Fryer (Depeche Mode, This Mortal Coil, Fad Gadget, Love and Rockets).

The Tuesday Club are an “Infectious & uplifting” 6 piece rock’n’roll band from St.Albans, Herts.

Support slots have included Space, Vangoffey, Toyah, B-Movie, Spizz Energy, Scant Regard, Bad Manners and numerous festival appearances. In 2019 they will be supporting Gene Loves Jezebel and Dreadzone

The band have released three albums, the latest - Art is Magic was released on May 6th 2018 and was recently described as:

“A slab of multi-flavoured rock ‘n’ roll which certainly gets under the skin in no time but an itch which just gets more delicious and addictive by the listen.

- The Ringmaster Review

“The Tuesday Club are punk pop at its catchiest if you’re thinking about Blondie and Roxy Music you’re on the right track... it’s infectious and uplifting”

- Vive Le Rock

Scant Regard’s 5th album, Skipping Over Damaged Area has an overall theme of the apocalyptic destruction and devolution of the planet we live on. The demolishing electronic rhythms thread through it’s very core underlined by catchy riffs and almost pop-like choruses in places. Creating a sense of hope for a second only to plummet into the depths of doom the next. It’s an environmentally unsound joyride through the current human psyche.

‘Skipping Over Damaged Area’ is available now.

Alternative Rock/Punk Rock band Prisoners Of Mother England formed in 2015 in West Yorkshire by Bedderz, opened for the likes of Toyah, Hands off Gretel, Newtown Neurotics etc. Bedderz relocated to London town late 2015, 6 months later POME were back playing the London circuit.

Now after nearly 3 years of playing around London, the band has a settled line up and are picking up interest on the London alternative music scene. Guests have included Steve Dior and mr Will Crewdson himself! This year the band appeared at the Camden Rocks festival & Portobello Live festival, also with a TV appearance under their belt and a couple of ‘homecoming’ northern gigs recently played.

Plans are a foot to record a 3 track cd featuring new songs ‘Girl in the ship’ ‘I’m alright’ & ‘Sell destruction’

JOLA DRUMS

This month we are delighted to welcome the iconic Jola Drums to our little Club. Jola has been the stylish heart of Adam Ants dual back beat since his remergence and subsequent rise back to his best over the last decade. We’ve been privaledged to have met Jola in person before this interview and can safely say she’s not just a brilliant drummer, she’s a great laugh too!

Hey Jola a very warm welcome to ‘The Club’

OK firstly, we are sitting in the cyber pub doing this interview, and it’s our round. What do you want to drink?

Rosehip and Hibiscus blend tea please.

I feel daring today.

What was the last thing you heard/watched that was so good you had to tell someone about it?

A man lighting massive fireworks from a cigarette in his mouth.

What four items would you put in a time capsule?

A horse race betting receipt

An Australian hat with corks

A bamboo activated charcoal air freshener

A pair of Crocs from the swiftwater sandals range

What does Punk mean to you? Getting out and doing stuff

If there had only ever been one, which and why. The Clash or The Sex Pistols? Can’t really choose as the bands were different to one another but both were, and are, very influential.

If football is the current ‘rock &’roll (in terms of Superstar status), what do you think could or should be the next big thing?

A rock Pontiff, there hasn’t been one for a while

If you could be any character in a film, what film and who would it be?

The daring feline musketeer Puss, in the Puss in Boots series of films.

You are now In The Club, but what club do you actually wish it was?

Clubfoot

Who’d be in your four-piece fantasy band?

Grigori Rasputin on Drums, Tyson Fury on Guitar

Margarer Thatcher

Lead Vocals, Fidel Castro on Bass

If you had a time machine and could go back to any year in music, what would it be and why? There would be three years to visit and all of them bizarrely 10 years apart: 1956, 1966 and 1976. 1956 being the year that Elvis Presley had his first US number 1 with Heartbreak Hotel. 1966; the year that Jimi Hendrix moved to London and the Experience was born and 1976; the year of the Sex Pistols and the birth of punk rock in the UK. All key moments in the history of music.

What question haven’t we asked you that you wish we had?

Currently touring with Adam Ant. He’s performing his album Friend or Foe and hits. All the dates are on Adam’s Facebook page facebook.com/antmusicofficial/

Where’s the best place to find you on the internet? For anyone interested, my website is www.joladrums.com and Instagram is @joladrums

If you could be any character in a film, what film and who would it be?

THE MINX DIARY

The Minx is back in the Club. Minx have missed cowbell too much. Was time to come back in new disguise and spy more on Club of Tuesday. This also involve changing some minions and auditioning new. Minx has now upgraded to select few of best minions. Continue quest for rid world of disgust shoe and have survived summer of much flip-flop.

MONDAY

The Minx do not like Christmas. Well, Minx love Christmas but Christmas is not seeming to be contained in December. Has escaped to November; even before Halloween now. Madness of Santa has ensued. Have been blasted by Elton John and Mariah Carey (not together, two singing diva too much for ears) and now annoying pop twit Robbie Williams is doing Christmas song. Do not want tinsel rammed down throat from October. Create nasty cat cough and make Minx angry.

When Minx see Christmas tree outside of December will now go same way as disgust shoe and be destroy. Have New Minion on look out. Have notice that people with really Christmas tree seem to be mainly people in bungalow with (should also be ban) vertical blind on window. And pampas grass in garden. Is disgust. Should not be allow. Ban Christmas outside December, disgust shoe, vertical blind and pampas grass (bamboo is allow as bamboo is not pampas grass). Oh and also rockery with succulent plant. Also disgust.

TUESDAY

Andreas or bounteous pedal board of guitar men anymore. Something have to give.)

Am quite like new outfit - is mostly black. Like assassin. Black is good. Did not quite like green of army, though obviously have to fit in with other band people. Have black leather cap now which is also good. Black leather very good.

Refuse to wear band T-shirt, however. It talk about the strange little man from Carry on Films. Am not wearing Oh Matron Tshirt. In fact am not wearing Tshirt full stop. Minion love Tshirt. But then he is allowed, as he is Minion. Gig go well. Happy crowd, happy band, happy Minx.

THURSDAY

Minion play strange music in house. He say name and cannot believe him. Why would write song about stomach problems of lunatic? He tell me of the man singing on this record. He is man what would call ‘Brummie’. He is a special man from West of Midlands. He have crazy wife with too young face. Minion is obsess with this man and his crazy wife and his crazy record. He also play other band of man call Black Sabbath. They are also crazy and sing about pigs in war! Who would write song about Pig in War? Mind you his record Minion listen to now is Diarrhoea of a Madman. Is not shit, despite name.

Have realised how many strange name of band and album are out in ether. Arch nemesis 50ft Woman write about love story of goldfish and cat. Super bonkers. (this week’s new slang word is bonkers)

Minion report progress. Has destroy

12 Christmas trees (ha ha one for each day of supposed Christmas), though have to reprimand him as 2 were normal fir tree in someone garden, minding their own business. No glitter or snowflake in sight. Make amends. Minion very sorry.

However, we walk into town later (yes, Minx do walk, not only in a vehicle of great calibre) and see see Christmas Tree Seller setting up big stall. Log cabin and lorry full of trees. Is crazy. Real tree will drop of all needles before December have even begun. Be like twig tree that trendy people buy in IKEA. Trendy for trendy sake. Have never seen leaf in its life. Blue and Yellow place for trendy people. Though sell good cushions.

Which remind me, what the eff is Hygge? Is new word everyone talks about. Apparently mean ‘fun’ in Danish. But how to mean cosy? What fun is blanket and even excellent cushion? Nice to keep warm but fun? No, not fun!

Fun is not trip to IKEA on Saturday lunchtime. Need adult only session at IKEA. Even better, have special Minx only session at IKEA. (and Minion). Then can test bed mattress is peace. Plump cushions in peace. Eat meatballs and rice in peace. With peas.

Will find useful person in IKEA and suggest. Will be good for profile of IKEA.

WEDNESDAY

Minx have gig with Club of Tuesday. Is good having Jordan skinny one back in band. Though size of his pedal board (along with that of Worm boy) mean less stage space for Minx to stamp feet. But now have slightly new stage outfit, do not wear so much high heel. (am sad but fall less over drum stand, Andreas’ mic,

FRIDAY

Bonkers day driving to place called Up North. Is too cold for Minx, though is also reason to get fur out of storage. Minx look like proper Russian Princess though get many tuts in the street. Ha! Of course, Minx Is proper Russian Princess, so make sense. They jealous. Yes, is cold, even for Minx. In Russia is so cold even swearing freezes. Nostril full of frost. Frostrils. But since Minx arrive in England have start to feel cold. Have lost Russian ability to not feel cold. Is bad.

Go for tea in Ye Old Tea Shoppe. Am fume as given teapot shaped like Christmas Pudding. IS STILL NOVEMBER. IS NOT CHRISTMAS. All staff in cafe all dress as elves. Music play on stereo - White Christmas. To calm Minx, Minion point out is nearly December. Minx point out, nearly December mean NEARLY Christmas not IS Christmas!

SATURDAY

Minion have to pay fine for Minx and get out from police station. Trip Up North a disaster.

SUNDAY

Have teapot shaped like Christmas pudding to pour today’s breakfast tea. Stole from cafe (but not reason Minx lock up).

Is now December. Minx give up. Give in. Merry Minxmas everyone.

Drawing on the knowledge and contacts built up over two decades in the music industry, Manilla Public Relations can offer you the professionalism, work rate and results to meet the demands of all musical styles. Over the years we have handled all manner of campaigns and events from acoustic to punk and we deal with hundreds and hundreds of media contacts from regional radio to flagship national radio and TV shows.

This month our mates at Manilla PR have got on the interviewing bandwagon with us and fired some quickfire questions to some of their current roster...

DAVID SINCLAIR

find out more at... manillapr.com

What would your older self tell your 16 year old self?

What are you listening to right now?

Bad Woman Blues by Beth Hart. Along with all her other talents, she is an amazing lyric writer. “I’ll be the sugar rush in your veins…” Have mercy.

Who was the first musician you paid to see? Jimi Hendrix Experience at Greens Playhouse, Glasgow in 1967. They were on a package tour supporting the Walker Brothers, Cat Stevens and Engelbert Humperdinck. Hendrix played maybe three songs. Insane.

What have you been reading lately?

IQ84 by Haruki Murakami. A tense, semi-sci-fi melodrama about a female professional assassin. Where pulp fiction meets philosophy.

Who is the most influential person in your life? Barbara Sinclair (my mother).

Which song do you wish you had written? White Christmas.

We’re at the bar. What are you drinking? Diet Coke.

Who would you dread getting stuck in a lift with? Hannibal Lecter would be worrying – particularly if it took a while to get the thing fixed.

What did you want to be when you grew up? A pop/rock star.

What would your older self tell your 16 year old self? Get started. Don’t stop. Don’t get deflected, distracted or disheartened.

When can we see you live?

November 2 United Brethren, Chelmsford

December 1 Fiddler, Kilburn, NW6

January 24 Station House, Chiswick, W4

How can we find out more about you? www.davidsinclairfour.com

Spotify: Search artist: David Sinclair

Get started. Don't stop. Don't get deflected, distracted or disheartened.

What are you listening to right now?

Big Thief mostly, and the new Sharon Van Etten, Nick Cave and Foals records. Who was the first musician you paid to see? U2 and Ash in Belfast.

What have you been reading lately?

Chasing The Scream and Running with the Horses.

Who is the most influential person in your life?

At this moment my son, who has disabilities. He’s teaching me a lot.

Which song do you wish you had written?

So tough… Move On Up.

We’re at the bar. What are you drinking?

Malbec.

Who would you dread getting stuck in a lift with?

Elevator pitch man.

What did you want to be when you grew up? A travelling songwriter, aka a rock star.

What would your older self tell your 16 year old self? You haven’t detected it yet but they’ve instilled in you to be afraid and deeply second guessing of yourself, but you have a lot of love and good things in your heart and head to give. Let it go. People you care about need you to be more present, more you. You’ve got good instincts. Trust them. Go in 100% right now and don’t ever pull back. Uncover your heart… and graciously inform that ludicrous little man across from you in the lift of where to get off.

When can we see you live?

Just finished a run of sold out shows and booking some new shows in London soon. If anyone out there can help, we want to play more outside of London.

How can we find out more about you?

Come chat with me online, here’s where you’ll find me…

facebook.com/iamofficer/ Spotify https://spoti.fi/2CCWTrw Go in 100% right now and don't ever pull back. Uncover your heart... What would your older self tell your 16 year old self?

What are you listening to right now?

Just taking a look through my iTunes and Spotify playlists and amongst a lot of other stuff I’m mainly into: Mark Lanegan, Goldfrapp, Elbow, Erik Satie, King Crimson, Killing Joke, Joanna Newsom, Led Zeppelin, Leftfield, Velvet Underground, Peter Gabriel, Punishment of Luxury, QOTSA, Ry Cooder (Paris, Texas), The Who, Loma, Steel Pulse, Debussy, Echobelly, The Membranes, The Maccabees, Goat Girl, This is the Kit, Howling Wolf, Captain Beefheart, Ghostpoet, Bassomatic, John Barry.

Who was the first musician you paid to see?

Stiff Little Fingers when I was 15 at the Newcastle Mayfair. A fake 18 year old birthdate proffered, the bouncer said “you’re not 18 son”, (dramatic pause/gut-wrenching disappointment) “get yourself in”. Eternally thankful to this unknown individual, the gig as you can imagine for a 15 year old was mind blowing.

What have you been reading lately?

At the moment I’m into biographies and I’m reading The Big Midweek, Life inside The Fall by Steve Hanley and Olivia Piekarski and just before that I read Clothes, Music, Boys by Viv Albertine. Both excellent and recommended reads.

Who is the most influential person in your life?

My wife Dawn she pushes me on and believes in me and casts out doubt; she biased though isn’t she (joke)

Which song do you wish you had written?

There’s too many but currently off the top of my head the top three might be:

1) There She Goes, The La’s

2) Rock and Roll, Velvet Underground

3) 100 Days, Mark Lanegan

We’re at the bar. What are you drinking?

Depends on time of day/session: Guinness, Laphroaig, G&T

Who would you dread getting stuck in a lift with?

Nigel Farage or Donald Trump, there may be a scuffle.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A lumberjack

What would your older self tell your 16 year old self?

Don’t worry and stop sitting in the corner; make it happen

When can we see you live?

Early 2020. After quite a hiatus during which time we thought we may call it a day we have found a new impetus and are busy getting ready for live shows and learning our new bassist the songs.

How can we find out more about you?

Most of our online presence can be found via our website www.cazimi.co.uk. Here there are links to our Soundcloud, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, BBC6, Spotify, iTunes and Tidal accounts

You can contact me directly via ian.hedley1@ntlworld.com if you want to follow anything up

Thanks for taking an interest

Jonn Penney and Rat

What are you listening to right now?

John: I still can’t stop listening to ‘Sleep Well Beast’ by The National.

Absolutely love this album, and its predecessor ‘Trouble Will Find Me’ for that matter. His lyrics are far and above what most artists achieve; so intimate, eloquent, honest. Love their experimentation too, especially with time signatures.

Rat: The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend Public Service Broadcasting: Race for Space

Who was the first musician you paid to see?

John: Duran Duran! I went to see them on the ‘Rio’ tour aged 12. My father dropped me off at the Odeon in Birmingham – I experienced the whole thing on my own then got picked up again afterwards. It was lifechanging. Yes, Duran Duran changed my life! I was a fan, partly because most of my mates at school at the time were girls and it made it easier to talk to them, but also because there was an atmosphere about their first album that made me feel rebellious when I listened to it (I know – must have been a sheltered life thus far huh?).

The gig was an epiphany because it made me realise that those guys I was listening intently to on my headphones every night actually existed in the real world and I could be in the same room as them. If they could do it, so could I…

Rat: Spear of Destiny at B’ham Odeon on the World Service Tour. Life changing moment for me in terms of live music.

What have you been reading lately?

John: I haven’t been taxing myself with literature of late, so I’ve been enjoying J K Rowling’s detective novels, the ones they base that tv series ‘Strike’ on. I like a good murder me.

Rat: Chestnut Man by Søren Sveistrup

The Crow Girl by Erik Axl Sund Tombland by C.J.Sansom

Who is the most influential person in your life?

John: No single individual. Anyone who inspires me has a huge influence on me. I’m a bit of a sponge in that respect. My kids inspire me daily because they seem to be able to learn anything and with so much less inhibition than I suffered at their age

Continued...

Who was the first musician you paid to see?

Rat: I guess this may sound arrogant but actually nobody is an influence. I like the solitary existence.

Which song do you wish you had written?

John: ‘Under Pressure’ David Bowie and Queen. Just the perfect song.

Rat: How Soon Is Now? The Smiths

We’re at the bar. What are you drinking?

John: A dark beer usually – plum porter, stout, a traditional Black Country Banks’s ‘Mild’.

Rat: These days would be a Pot of Tea

Who would you dread getting stuck in a lift with?

John: Myself. What a dullard I am, until someone strikes up a conversation, I feel very uncomfortable alone. The ‘imposter syndrome’ burns brightest when I’m solitary. I’m so jealous of people who are happy in their own company for extended periods of time.

Rat: Shouty, self important, bluetooth earpiece folk… and this has happened to me…

What did you want to be when you grew up?

John: An actor – see above self-loathing, escape through playing the part of someone else. Anyone else.

Rat: As my parents often remind me, I used to want to be an Astronaut or a Bin Man. The latter due to at the time not needing qualifications and finished by

lunchtime. And yes, I’m aware of the irony…

What would your older self tell your 16 year old self?

John: Chill out dude. It’ll all come together, and you’ll have much nicer problems to solve than trying not to listen to any contemporary music in case you accidentally steal someone else’s melody.

Rat: Stop Smoking now!!

When can we see you live?

Ned’s Acoustic Dustbin:

7th Dec Leicester - Firebug

24th Jan Manchester - Day & Night

30th Jan Bristol - The Exchange

31st Jan Wolverhampton -

Newhampton Arts Centre

8th Feb London - Lexington

How can we find out more about you?

John: I’m writing a book. It’ll come out sometime never at this rate but in the meantime you can see what I/the band are up to here: facebook.com/nedsatomicdustbin

Andy Keeble, 1965 – 2019.

It’s been some months now since we lost our dear friend and musical cohort Andy and the truth is I still expect him to pop round for a rehearsal some time. I guess it’s a cliché but it doesn’t feel real – it really doesn’t. He is still somehow there with us on stage and I fully expect him to bound past me at any moment to jump in to the crowd and whip up a storm, exciting the audience with that up-close serenade or bouncing to his knees like a wild thing. Andy was well loved locally and in the wider alt-acoustic world, but also from our tours in little corners of Normandy and back room bars in Berlin – his unique and jovial presence celebrated in schnapps, calvados and of course fine whiskey.

For many Andy was the wild fiddle player in the cowboy hat often seen leaping from the stage whilst whipping up an energy storm of county-gypsy-folk-punk, for others the caring and thoughtful guardian of their gardens and for all the sweet fellah always ready with a joke and a quip! Andy was the embodiment of DIY spirit and musical finesse. We have lost a dear comrade, friend and musician though his spirit and inspiration will remain with us always.

Andy has been such an ever present and important part of our lives, from the Sketch Pad days of The Gentle Banana People through to The Voodoo Poodles, The Young Trash Lovers, The Anglo German Low Stars, The Astronauts, The Trailer Trash Orchestra and Los Chicos Muertos. We saw in the New Year together most years (sometimes in outrageous fancy dress) and he was loyal and caring Godfather to our daughter Emelia. That is why it still doesn’t compute and I’m not sure it ever really will – still there stage right, a wink and a knowing grin – we are sounding hot tonight!

We have gig planned on Andy’s Birthday weekend featuring four bands he loved playing with (and an Anglo German Low Star flying in from Berlin) and all are welcome to come along, bounce like a mad thing and raise a glass to the incomparable Mr Andy Keeble. The gig will be at Club 85, Hitchin on Saturday March 21, 2020 and will feature Los Chicos Muertos, The Astronauts, Hubcap Moon and Skimmington Ride along with an appearance from Low Star Clive Product. You can find details here -

Adieu old friend – somewhere down the road. Grae J.

Another compelling issue of the In The Club Magazine from Perfect Pop Co-Op and another treat in word and sound had us basking in some of the very best independent goodness. The autumn 2019 edition of the online magazine from the label, issue 41 to be exact, came with the fourth edition of their free sampler Impulsive Compulsions featuring artists and sounds from within the embrace of the Perfect Pop Co-Op family. It is fair to say that its three predecessors left us and an increasingly great many basking in a rich array of sounds and flavours but No 4 might be the most eclectic and irresistible mix yet meaning to ignore it would be an act of great stupidity.

Formed in 2011 by members of The Tuesday Club; Dave Worm, The Beautiful Wolf and Andreas Vanderbraindrain for the sole purpose of releasing their own music, Perfect Pop Co-Op has grown and stretched its reach to, as mentioned earlier, bring a great many other artists into the family; they regularly featured on The Andreas and The Wolf Radio Show, the in house monthly podcast, and teasing the imagination within the Impulsive Compulsions samplers.

The latest begins with Andreas and the Wolf and their track All I want is you. Its relatively calm entrance belies its pop punk instincts yet it is the melodic enterprise and drama from guitar and keys which enlists the imagination most firmly. The track is a ridiculously catchy affair, an aural romancing of ears and for us the most captivating offering from the band yet as the Sampler gets off to a potent start which continues with the mystic rock magnetism of Nashville hailing duo Hello Dearies. Like a shadow bound nursery rhyme All The Pretty Boys and Girls simply beguiled, its Wicker Man-esque spiced chant a tenebrific celebration and just delicious upon our musical palate.

Nine Day Decline is a newcomer to these ears but swiftly through their contribution to the sampler had us rushing to their social media profiles to learn more. With the likes of Altered States, Dead Heaven, Complicity, Christian Death, Counting the Mad, F.O.C., Section 3 and more in their histories, the British trio cast a goth clad post

punk tempest as atmospheric as it is emotive. Decisions is a haunting slice of sonic dissonance, its raw melodic drone and impassioned breath akin to a mix of Play Dead, Sisters Of Mercy, and London After Midnight but openly unique to the London based outfit.

Inadequacy (day 197) is the track from sampler regular Reverse Family, an electro spattered piece of DIY enticement from the solo project of Dermot Illogical and a piece of soul searching reflection with its own sneaky swing while Dislocated Flowers immediately after wraps its psychedelic seduction around ears and imagination with Orange Roses and Yellow Tulips. Both tracks quickly and easily got under the skin being rapidly joined by The Scratch through their punk nurtured power pop rocker No two castles are the same. Taken from their excellent last album, Great Adventure, the song infested and resonated beyond its stay; always a sign of something rather tasty.

Equally flavoursome and a spark to greed is 50ft Woman and Psychic Hygiene. From its initial sonic squeal a devious swing erupts, the just as guileful tones of Minki riding its infectious pop punk ‘n’ roll sway. The track is another which leaves on-going tendrils of flirtation igniting continual companionship before She Made Me Do It ensured they get their chunk of the passions through their track, Fun and Games. The union of Shaheena Dax (Rachel Stamp) and Will Crewdson (Rachel Stamp, Adam Ant, Scant Regard) is one of our favourite propositions to erupt from speakers and their latest song is pure alt-pop manna, a virulent contagion defeating any ill wished cure.

One of the biggest traits of these samplers is that we have yet to come across anything which merely satisfied, no fillers ever on offer and the fourth is no different as it continues with GLUE from The Dodo, a keenly catchy post punk/punk rock stroll with a definite Swell Maps tinge and heart to it, and straight after Night of the Wild Mind courtesy of Suicide Tapes. A quartet from Ware in the UK, the band similarly has post punk instincts to a goth rock heart and upon a contagion of rhythms weave a magnet of a track which had us hungry for more. Originally formed in 1983, the band reformed a short while back and are raising a stir, no surprise with tracks like this Flesh For Lulu scented incitement.

The Tuesday Club and Venus Overload bring this particular treat to a close. The first gives us a live slice of fan favourite Lady Gargar, a

track revelling in all the mischief, imagination, and uniqueness which fuels the band and its rare fusion of punk, indie and the creative devilment which shapes the best rock ‘n’ roll. The latter of the two provides Afghanistan Bananastand, a ravening dance of garage and psych rock intimation which had hips and feet as keenly engaged as ears and imagination.

That is Impulsive Compulsions 4, a release which had us basking in great sounds, fresh adventures, and new explorations of artists which like those before them deserve proper attention. The fun involved was just icing on the cake.

Christmas, charity and community are synonymous with St Albans pubs and this time of year, more than ever, our pubs play a key role in helping people to celebrate, fundraise and combat isolation and loneliness.

Many of the city pubs are adopting a local not for profit, community group or charity for Christmas as part of the Save St Albans Pubs ‘Very Local Charity Christmas’. There will be events and activities including quiz nights and Santa Paws to help raise funds and awareness for their chosen group.

Save St Albans Pubs has been fighting for reform of the business rate system since 2017. Three of St Albans local pubs shut their doors in 2019, largely due to the impact of business rates, high rents and the economic slowdown. More will follow unless the government takes urgent action.

Ho Ho Ho!

Just thought I would take a moment of your time to reflect on the last 12 months of local music in and around St Albans and what a year it has been.

I have seen so many excellent local bands and artists this last year and played 100’s of songs on my show it’s hard to know where to start! I think it’s truly heartwarming to see so much going on in our local music scene. Bands and artists not only performing live on a regular basis but the whole creative aspect from writing and recording to self releasing music. The dedication is amazing, across all genres and young and old alike.

What I do worry about though is the decline in live audiences and I wonder why that is. It seems harder and harder to get people out. Is it the economy or is it laziness or lack of interest. Years ago you’d put on a gig with a decent line up and you could be pretty confident that you’d get a good crowd. Nowadays you have to do so much marketing, nag so many people and quite often it’s a free gig, so what is it I wonder? Especially with young people! When I was young ( yeah I know it’s been a while!) I would be out seeing bands every week! I would love to see more young people at local gigs. They only seem to turn up when it’s their mates bands! Kids eh…

There is so much noise on the internet these days, maybe we are just getting drowned. With venues and pubs closing on a regular basis I wish for 2020 that we really do ‘Keep Music Live’ or alive and we buy the tracks/eps/albums being created by local artists. Yes, it’s easy to stream but it means so much to local artists for you to turn up to their gigs and buy a cd or vinyl.

And lastly, why is it a ‘covers band’ can pack a pub but not a night of original music?

I’ve never understood that - I’m not knocking covers bandsthere are some very good ones out there & I understand the lure of hearing music you already know and like when you’re having a few drinks on a Friday night but for me nothing can beat hearing an amazing group of musicians performing their own songs, songs I’ve never heard before and to go home feeling totally blown away by a voice or lyric or beat.

I am probably preaching to the choir here, but please please go and support some original local music in 2020 & make an old groupie very happy.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!
