Issue 022 JULY 2015

I’m sitting writing this at Hackney Road while mixing songs for a forthcoming EP of ours. Which one.? You say? Not a clue. Don’t ask. We’re recording these things first and sorting them out later.

AVDB has set himself the task of writing 365 songs this year - I might have mentioned this before. At some point, we’ll have to record some of them. Last issue, I had a bit of a rant about covers bands and a lack of decent material - well, I’d like to offer up our esteemed scribe’s material. We’ll never get round to recording all of it; so we can whore him out as the Stock, Aitken and Waterman (or maybe, the Leiber and Stoller) of St Albans.

But we’re blessed; someone once ssid (well, probably a few people actaully) that you have years and years to write your first album and only six months to write your second. So far, we’ve got about 80 albums’ worth. And he’s only been at it a few months.

So what am I saying here? Honestly, there’s no bloody excuse for shit songs. Write, write, write... about anything. There are 6 of us these days and if we can get out stupid little heads together to come up with at least 4 finished songs every month, which doesn’t include left overs from previous sessions that still need a few little tweaks, then anyone can.

Go on, get on with it. We’re busy working on 2016.

You! Yes, you!

Have you ever had a Forbidden Kiss? And no, we’re not talking about a cheeky one under the mistletoe at Christmas with a girl you fancied when both aged 12, or indeed, a bit later in life, getting caught by your boss ‘kissing’ his wife at his party, then having to leave via the window, resign your position the next day and go ‘travelling’ because ‘you felt the urge to’? We’re talking about the latest EP from The Tuesday Club, who are now 4 (as in the age of the band, not age of members or indeed, combined ages of members. That’s like 307 or thereabouts. Combined ages of members, that is. We’re not The Polyphonic Spree, who recently celebrated their one millionth member, whose prize was an instrument never before seen by the eyes of man).

Anyway, Forbidden Kiss. The EP.

It’ll be released on Saturday the 27th of June, Anno Domini 2015, at The New Adelphi Club in Hull, as a (serious point here) small thank you to all of our Hull based supporters. Ta for that, like. Before and after that date, the band are playing other gigs. This scribe would bother to list them but assumes you can use your eyeballs and glance to your left, where they’re all listed (thank you very much). Come to one, if you like. It will be a HOOT.

Finally (as my coffee is getting cold and the cat is clamouring to be let out) we must address the question of ‘what does it all mean?!’. When polled, the band didn’t know and AVDB wasn’t telling. Pin your own meaning to the song. It’s more fun that way and also, you might not like the original one anyway. So there.

Finally, finally (as the cat has now knocked over the coffee as it’s not been let out. The cat that is, not the coffee), this is the first of two EPs the band is releasing this year so if you HATE this one (and, perhaps, feel the need to blog about it in a snotty fashion), there’ll be another along in a minute (well, October) all about Lady Gargar. So there, so there.

Sounds from the Garden

PART 2

the Beautiful Wolf

When we’d finished the recordings, we decided upon the name Siren Tapes and we made 100 copies on Jan’s twin deck ghetto blaster - ‘lavishly’ packed with a booklet glued to the outside of the cassette case with a screen printed cover and a couple of photocopied pages per band.

We sold them for £1 each through Welwyn Garden’s Our Price and Hatfield’s J&J Records, on a sale or return basis. There was a very vibrant fanzine scene at the time which, along with favourable coverage in the Welwyn Times, helped publicise the release - and it sold out in a few weeks, hence prompting us to plan a follow-up.... ‘Pulse’ (as in the sound of the Herts Beat!).

So we did the process over again and now, with a bit of experience, the quality of the recordings gradually improved.

As Wargames, we played our first gigs at local schools and venues, then moved on to London venues such as the Moonlight Club, The George Robey, the Tooting Castle and even further afield with memorable gigs at Bishops Stortford Triad club and Stevenage College. We recorded one cassette album on the trusty TEAC before we split, when Jan moved away in 1984.

Here’s part 2 of The Beautiful Wolf’s Sounds from the Garden... He’ll now transport you back to Welwyn Garden City, somewhere in the 1970’s!

In the club

Maggie K De Monde

with Our next guest ‘In the Club’ is the super swishy and glamourous Maggie K De Monde a legend from the 80s with two classic acts Swans Way and Scarlet Fantastic, both bands featuring in at least one record collection in the Tuesday Club (AVBD)... but he has ‘No Memory’ of this :-)

Swansway and Scarlet Fantastic

1) OK firstly, we’re sitting in The Cyberman’s Arms (the pub on the internet) doing this... and it’s our round. What’ll it be?

I’ll have a large glass of dry white please (sauvignon blanc maybe).

2) What was the last thing you heard/watched that was so good you just had to tell someone about it?

“the Affair”” and prior to that “Fortitude” & “olive kitteredge”

3) There used to be badges and compilation albums proclaiming ‘Punk’s Not Dead’...but what do you think its current mortal state is?

Hmmm... not sure although I reckon the attitude will never die, whatever musical format it’s put into!

4) Is the Internet a help or a hindrance to...

- New Bands

- Established acts

I’m a pretty positive person so I certainly see it as a help to new bands; there’s so much scope if you can think out of the box & use it as a tool to get profile on your music.

I think for established acts it’s a real help, gathering data from an already established fan base & acting as a platform to showcase all new releases & gigs plus whatever else you’re up to at the moment.

5) If you could be any character in any film, what film... and who would it be?

Emanuelle Haha!! I joke!! that’s a tricky one………. ok, I’ve thought about it & I’d be Neytiri in Avatar.

6) You are now In The Club (The Tuesday Club, that is)... but what club do you actually wish it was?

Studio 54 in 70s NYC or Area or Limelight in 80s NYC... or the Rum Runner back in the day in my home town of brum!!

7) Who’d be in your 5 piece fantasy rock’n’ roll band? Guitar, Bass, Drums, Vocals and keys…

Edge or Nile Rodgers on guitar, Sly & Robbie on bass & drums, Eno on keys & moi (of course) on vocals!!!

8) If you had a time machine and could go back to any year in music, when would it be and why?

1972, so I could go & see Roxy Music play live again with Eno in the band.

9) Just a couple to finish off; Swans Way (and Scarlet Fantastic) have now achieved cult

status. What do you feel about that? People seem to still be showing the love 30 years after you officially finished…!

Crazy innit!! but I love it!! Quite a few of the old fans are loyal & are still enjoying my current stuff which makes me really happy :-). It also makes me feel proud that our stuff had a timelessness about it. It never actually did fit into any particular category at the time we were making it. I guess everything I’ve ever done has never been specifically tailored to any specific genre; just whatever pops out at any given point!!

10) Where’s the best place to find your current musical endevours on t’internet and what are you up to right now?

I’m just putting the finishing touches to a new album. It’s got a folky/30s cabaret/ Americana/ acoustic kinda vibe. It’s inspired by nature, life & all the usual things. It’s quite dreamy so I’m calling it “Reverie” and I will be releasing that this year. Also, I’ve recorded an electronica EP coming out called See Saw. I’ve also got

a track on Hifi Sean’s new album featuring loadsa interesting people including Alan Vega Suicide, Fred b52s, Yoko ono, Crystal waters, David McAlmont, Dave ball, Crystal waters, billy Ray Martin & loads more. If you don’t know who Hifi Sean is, he was the singer in the Soup Dragons (lovely Scottish guy).

If you seek out Maggie K de Monde, or Maggie and Martin or Kill the Hero ft Maggie K de Monde or Mighty K or Swans way or Scarlet Fantastic you will find it all..! I have several pages on Facebook but Maggie K de Monde (musician) is prob the best one and of course, all my albums are for sale on Amazon!

Thanks Maggie - we appreciate you taking the time to talk to us. AVDB and J-Rod last saw Maggie performing while lurking in The Sanderson’s just prior to Christmas and very entertaining she was too! Was totally worth the mahoosive bar bill...

The tangent randomings of an aging grumpy punk no

LOCAL HEROES!

Opening bold statement, open for bold broadside derision…

Local, ‘amateur’ music is probably more important to us now than many new, famous, established artists, populating the star stratosphere of today…

I think so many artists you see perform down your local pub, are just as good, if not better than a lot of contemporary signed acts, selling thousands of ‘units’ (30 years ago I would have written millions, but sales just ain’t what they used to be) to a wider population.

It’s a constant frustration that there are bands all over the St.Albans area who, regardless of genre or style, simply deserve to be massive. This must be the case everywhere. We constantly marvel at how so many excellent bands are overlooked and slip through the net, compared with some of the drek we are presented with on TV and radio.

Obviously some do surface and break out. 10 years ago Enter Shikari surprised everyone with their DIY first album and now The Shires currently have a top selling single, though I’m not sure which local venues they played regularly? But still, I think we should celebrate our local music microcosm, our local scene and our home grown stars. An example of someone who has become a bit of a legend in her own break time and contender for local superstar is the young and scarily talented, Emma McGrath. 15 year old (must be 16 by now) St. Georges Pupil who has gigged relentlessly to enthusiastic audiences, whenever she plays. It wouldn’t be a surprise if she were to pop up on later with Jools Holland in future but, knowing how the music industry functions at the moment, she may be one of the many deserving who will be overlooked!

Many unsigned bands are recording, putting out their music, presenting and marketing themselves in such a professional, imaginative way it would put most established labels to shame. The Zipheads tour constantly and must, by default sell copies of their album steadily. Nick and The Sun machine, produced an incredibly slick, professional album that, I believe, was far better served being made independently, without the interference of a record company. And, The Tuesday Club, our benefactors and curators of this very magazine, have such a strong sense of media awareness and visual presentation when it comes to making their mark, I sincerely think a big label just wouldn’t get it.

4

The big difference, of course, is the vast amounts of money a major can spend, pushing, plugging, publicising, advertising, bribing, forcing (like rhubarb in the dark) their ‘product’ onto the airwaves, TV screens and wider world. That will always be a luxury unsigned artists can’t afford and, let’s be honest, we’d all like to live the dream and be signed to a big, safe, cosy, patriarchal conglomerate, who will finance our every whim and provide for our every need but, as we all know, those days are over! Unless you’ve won a TV talent show, or you are a granny safe singer songwriter, you can forget it. No one is putting money into anything anymore!

However, the one thing we all have at our disposal, major companies and unsigned artists alike, is social media. Here the playing field is level and this is where local music scenes thrive. Using social media to create events, gather people together, to meet, commune, share, experience (old fashioned behaviour I know), is still a powerful tool. To reach out to so many, whip up a frenzy and get everyone down that pub, to bolster and support local musicians, singers, players, enthusiastic idiots who feel compelled to impose their vision and noise onto anyone who will listen, is a joyous celebration of community.

Mustn’t forget our local media too for its rigorous support of local music. Gareth Lloyd at BBC, 3 Counties Radio has always been a big force and promoter around the local scene. Denise Parsons, on Radio Verulam (See the Parson’s Knows in this magazine), whole show is dedicated to playing local music, and interviewing local talent. Even the Herts Advertiser and Review, make space for gigs and events, more so than many other local rags would do. These outlets take it seriously, adding credence and value to local music, so we should too.

However, there is still a curious problem we suffer regards getting enthusiastic about amateur music on our doorstep… It’s either human nature, British culture or inherent cynicism but we don’t seem to trust people we know, who make music, to be any good!

We rely on strangers to hold us in their thrall with their music and tend not to consider the equally talented people we know, as serious artists. What is that?

How many musicians reading this have experienced that thing where your friends (and family!) witness you play and afterwards are genuinely shocked, surprised and amazed that you could possibly … DO… THAT!?

We shouldn’t overlook the possibility that some people don’t take local music seriously because of the very fact it hasn’t been endorsed by a greater media agency – Radio, TV, press etc. People don’t trust their ears or own judgement. It’s as if we have to be told it’s OK to like some artists by these big media machines, run by complete strangers!

Another factor why we might be a bit blasé and “too cool for school” regards local music is our close proximity to that there big London! Twenty five minutes to the centre of the city and we have access to EVERYTHING! Also, the number of big names that not only come to the arena

“Local, ‘amateur’ music is probably more important to us now than many new, famous, established artists, populating the star stratosphere of today…”

but are now appearing at the Harpenden Halls, can make it easy to think local music doesn’t matter so much make. In the last year Harpenden had John Cooper Clarke, Doc Brown (ask your kids), dea’ John Otway and now, The Buzzcocks! We mustn’t become complacent.

I recently went through a grumpy 5 minutes pondering and bemoaning that despite the immense diversity and proliferation of live music in our area, there wasn’t a defined “scene” as such. I very soon emerged from the end of that ridiculous tunnel to realise that there bloody well is a scene. It’s happening right now, all the time with every band and artist, in every venue, every night of the week, in St. Albans, Harpenden and surrounding hermitages… And anyone who’s a regular at the Redbourne folk club (est. 1775) will wonder just what the fuck I was worrying about!

Of course, go see U2 at the 02 if that’s what rocks your boat or floats y’socks, but there’s something magical and good for your soul about being part of creating and making local music work. Whether you’re a promoter, musician or in the audience, surely experiencing not just friends, friends of friends, members of your family, but complete strangers doing their thing down your favourite boozer is just as fulfilling and exciting. I also think it’s just as valid, if not becoming more valid… And a lot cheaper!

“It’s a constant frustration that there are bands all over the St.Albans area who, regardless of genre or style, simply deserve to be massive.”

It’s not always easy to know who you are talking to at Tuesday Club gig. Looking for the cowbell

DA Minx The Minx Agony Column

Minx is considering open pound shop. It seem everyone love poundland and 99p Land (surprised there is not total war between the two, in fact it seems poundland have bought out 99p stores and still have change left over - kha kha Minx make another Russian joke)

But my shop will be Funt Shop. Funt is Russian for pound and so will be superb to market. фунт Shop. Will take over from Polski Sklep in popularity.

It will sell all sort of cheap shit. There will be queues to buy Funt clothe and Funt goods. Will be like TK Maxx on Thursdays after delivery. There maybe riots to get best goods at Funt shop.

However Minx will not be doing actual work. Will just be funding Funt shop. Will be like a dictator pointing to various tasks and Funt minion will run around like minion from cartoon Despicalbles. May even make them wear costume of cartoon minion. Then people will come from mile around to point and laugh and make selfie with yellow Funt minion.

Will have ranges called Funt To Wear, Funt To Buy and space for kids called Silly Funt full of practical joke, like Madness song.

Then we are in studio to record new songs of Club of Tuesday. Songs about cup of tea, people too pure for own good and then also letting children run the country. Is bad for the country. They will only have sweet shop and Funt Shop will be unsuccessful. Will close and make many people redundant. We do not want children running country. Is dangerous.

But then I read book from Charles Dickens and he create characters of children minion in book called Oliver Twist. This sound like much more use for children, to fetch

and carry for boss Fagin. Like this idea. Builder Minion and Main Minion do not like this idea. They say children should be at school where they belong.

In studio man called Steve Honest say he go go dance to Rogerio Marauder when he play keyboard part. I think he not very honest on this. I never see him dance.

Listen to Vanderbraindrain ridicule lyric for new songs. He talk about jumping queue to save some peas. What madness is this? In Russia we have many queue in old days for peas and bread, so can understand this. But this is Western world so why would need to save peas. And what type of peas? Builder Minion like those strange glowing green soft pea called mushy pea that he has with favourite meal, fish and chip. This used to be English favourite meal but now apparently is Chicken Tikka Masala which do not even exist in India. Is crazy.

Minx favourite dish is secret. Dare not say here otherwise fans will send. Minx have this problem in the past when Minx say preference for certain shoe or clothe or drink. Fan minions (lower M as not proper Minion) send many gift and it get ridiculous with box stacked up outside Minx Towers.

Realise have filled up whole week diary with one day of Minx thought. Anyway time for cowbell practice.

The Very Meaning of Art!

It’s 12.33AM and I’m home from a rehearsal with my Los Chicos Muertos compadres ahead of a party gig in a few days time. I don’t have work tomorrow so I’ve set myself up with a cold beer and a black coffee listening to the expanded version of Van Morrison’s Moondance album. I love this album, it’s like an old friend or a well worn cardigan and brings a sense of comfort every time I hear it. Van Morrison is one of those artists that divide opinion between my friends. I remember holed up in Paris some 26 years ago with my girlfriend (now wife) and two of those Chicos, Dez and Andy. Van had a single out at the time – Whenever God Shines His Light (with Sir Cliff) - and it would occasionally come round on MTV which was pretty much the only channel we watched. I liked the song but my friends couldn’t see it at all and took the Mickey out of me for liking it.

Finally tonight I think I get it. Part of what all artists do is hold a mirror up to you. If you can’t see that mirror then chances are you’re not really gonna get what that artist is trying to say. No piece of art will ever hold that mirror for everyone because the mirror is a conduit of shared experience. The mirror will always be like those you find in carnivals and fairgrounds, revealing a view of yourself previously unseen, but however distorted one can recognise a truth in that reflection. There are certain pieces of art that hold that mirror for many whilst others just for a select few but neither can be deemed superior, just somewhere between mainstream and avant garde.

I’ve seen the Mona Lisa a few times and have to admit that it (along with most works by De Vinci) leaves me cold, it would be nowhere

near my top 100 pieces of art, yet of course for others it is a masterpiece. Such is art, such is life and if it weren’t so t’would be a boring world indeed.

There are those who create specifically with this in mind, searching for the common thread. To most of us however these lines of communication occur quite by accident and we have no real idea what is going to connect. We just create and put it out there and sometimes get pleasantly surprised at a particular piece that seems to engage a wider audience.

It’s for this reason that all critique should be taken with a pinch of salt for there’s no critic on earth that has your life experience or mental disposition. Each of us as viewer, listener and consumer is unique and what moves you may leave many cold. There of course lies the beauty, that for each of us there is art that will exhilarate and reveal whilst for each piece of art lies somewhere an audience.

This month I have two recent postings to The Poetry Underground that have different takes on the past. Nostalgia comes from Barry O’Brien, head honcho at Big Untidy Events, Dover Radio presenter and instigator of the excellent Dover Tales project. Kim Shand on the other hand takes a look back at Teenage Me. Enjoy!

“Turn it up, that’s enough, so you know, it’s got soul.”

Nostalgia

Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be

Back in the day when I was a lad

It was Battenberg cake, salmon spread sarnies

And jelly with evaporated milk for tea

As parents and aunties talked for hour after hour

At least that’s how it seemed back then

Of air raids and rationing

Black outs and doodlebugs

And make sure you’re home before 10.

Now it’s the first single I bought

And the first live band I saw

Osgood Charlton or Greaves

The long hot summer of 76

Or the winter of 63.

Sure you can plan for tomorrow

Or live for today

But I’m telling you now

Nostalgia is not what it used to be.

Teenage Me

I was a horrible teenager I made my mother cry I drove my father to despair I don’t know why my teachers bothered With the girl who broke rules for pleasure A statement being made Bold in black Pink hair my only girlish asset Nobody expected me to live until 25 I loved the bright entrancements of the drink The beautiful feeling of detachment Not Deathscared won t touch me I am gone from this world. Yet I am here now having grown Having felt the pain of parenthood With my own horrible and hurting teenagers Remember this Most of us suffer Most of us grow away from the intensity most of us survive

Paul Eccentric

In 1984 a journalist writing for The Watford Observer dubbed ‘wannabe enigmatic pop star’ Paul ‘Eccentric’ because he refused to give his surname during an interview. It stuck. For the past thirty years he has been writing, directing and performing under this ridiculous moniker, but at least it got him noticed.

He is a published songwriter, poet, playwright and novelist.

His debut novel: ‘Down Among The Ordinaries’ was published by United Press in 2004. He then spent the next few years writing and directing for stage and radio, which culminated in his first Edinburgh Fringe run with his play ‘The Sorry People’.

In 2009; along with Ian Newman and Donna Daniels-Moss, Paul co-founded Rhythmical Ravings and Rants (RRRANTS), a poetry, song writing, comedy and storytelling collective. Their first in-house publication was Paul’s poetry collection; ‘The Kult Of The Kazoo’ at the end of 2009.

In 2010 he published a self help guide to performing, based on his performance workshops and coaching classes entitled, ‘Quaking In Me Stackheels’. He followed this in 2013 with ‘Rrrantanory Little Stories’, a collection of bedtime stories for adults; both for DesertHearts Publishing. His latest book, ‘The Edinburgh Fringe In A Nutshell’ is published by Burning Eye Books and will be available this June. The London Launch with be held on 1st July at Coco Cafe, 136, Watford Road, Croxley Green. Herts. WD3 8BZ

This year sees him performing at many events and festivals across the land including Glastonbury, Larmer Tree and The Edinburgh Fringe. Detail available on his website pauleccentric.co.uk

He has written numerous plays and stories as well as documentaries and articles for radio and has had his poetry featured in various newspapers, magazines and anthology books.

He is probably best known as the mouthy half of dyslexic poetry duo ‘The Antipoet’: the beatrantin’ rhythm’n views act that currently takes up most of his life.

He has been fronting The Odd Eccentric since 1984; albeit with a break during the mid 1990s, and The Senti-Mentals; on and off since 1996, along with several other bands: Polkabilly Circus, Sly Quip & The Quickwits, SLOB and The Rocketeers. (He also currently plays the washboard for The Caution Horses, DodoBones and The Wrinklepickers)

When not writing or performing he is Artistic Director and one third of the triumvirate behind The RRRANTS Collective, helping to promote and disseminate independent poets, songwriters and storytellers. Introducing

Parsons Knows The

THIS MONTH’S TOP BANDS, ARTISTS and EVENTS!

Hello July… So how many festivals have you made it to so far then? I have been busy hosting local events and off course getting to as many tour dates as possible with The Tuesday Club! There are still more to come so make sure you check out the gig listings for a couple of great local events…

The Live Music Project takes a break for July for a well-earned rest for everyone but we will be back with another monthly showcase night on 22nd August with some new bands to the Project – All Things Considered facebook.com/ allthingsconsidered?fref=ts &

The Coridor plus the return of some Project favourites, Stolen Horse stolenhorseband?fref=ts will be The Neverists TheNeverists?fref=ts diary folks!

The Live Music Acoustic Café Sessions, that have proved to be extremely popular as a family friendly event also break for the summer and will be back on 20th September. As always keep an eye on our web page for more information trestle.org.uk

Hubcap Moon

As for all things Radio Verulam, my local music show, The Parsons Knows Local Music, seems to be getting a great response and it seems lots of musicians can’t wait to get on air & I’ve some great live guests coming up for July. Don’t miss Hubcap Moon on 9th July facebook. com/hubcapmoon?fref=ts & Kathy Freeman all the way from Berlin (especially for MY show obviously!!) on 16th July facebook.com/KathyFreemanRocks?fref=ts Both of which will be playing Amble by the Park on 18/19th July. So, tune in every Thursday between 7-8pm on 92.6FM for all the latest local music & gig news from Lemonrock & live guests.

So let’s talk about Amble by the Park in Harpenden on 18th & 19th July – I am very excited about this event I have to say! Not only is it 2 days of outside music in a great pub garden but the line-up this year is just amazing, ok well I did have a little something to do with that… & the icing on the cake is that Radio Verulam will be doing an Outside Broadcast from the event over the 2 days with me & Alex McKay from The Music Lab doing interviews & broadcasting live from the event. Pretty Damm Cool... if you ask me. Think I will need a well-earned rest after this so it’s lucky I’m off to the depths of Norfolk to stay in Father Ted’s caravan the following week then!

facebook.com/events/922681607794241/ Take a look at the line up – headlining on Saturday 18th July is our own The Tuesday Club & on Sunday 19th its Fragile Souls who are brilliant and not gigging that much due to recording commitments

Hubcap Moon, Kathy Freeman, Starseedz, to name but a few.. If I was you I would just decide to

TheParsonsKnowsLocalMusiconRadioVerulameveryThursday evening between 7-8pm to hear all the latest news and gig info & great local tracks too.
