1. If you were a volunteer on a committee to plan a party, what job would you want to have? A. I would be President! I like to oversee all aspects of the party & have a good grasp on budgeting, decorating, & delegating. B. I would be responsible for Operations. I enjoy researching all the little details such as the location, date, and vendors. I’m good when it comes to ensuring we stay on track with our budget! C. I would lead the Creative efforts. My passion lies in selecting a theme and designing the overall look. My ideas are endless! D. I prefer to help out wherever the team needs me. In planning a party, I prefer to receive direction from those planning it! 2. How would you best describe your planning experience so far? A. A breeze! I could do this all of the time. B. Fun when researching venues & vendors. I just wish I knew what to tell them when they ask what our special day will look like. C. A dream when it comes to designing the look of the day. It’s just so difficult to remember to stay within our budget!

38

D. I think I need some help- my life is so busy that I don’t know what to do next and I’m becoming overwhelmed! 3. When planning a date night with your fiancé, what are you most likely to do? A. Plan ahead! I would make reservations a few weeks prior, & surprise him with this favorite drink when he walks in the door. B. Prioritize! I tend to look at my “going out budget” and then select a restaurant that fits it nicely. I also like to read the latest reviews on new movies or attractions before deciding. C. Have a blast! I’m up for anything as long as I have enough time to pick out the perfect outfit and accessories. Sometimes a quick trip to the mall beforehand for cute shoes is just a must. D. Ask my fiancé what he would like to do and decide together. I can sometimes have a hard time making decisions on restaurants or entertainment, so his input is greatly appreciated! 4. When picturing your wedding day, what are you most likely to worry about? A. Being able to hand-o! all the details that I so carefully planned for the day. I’m just worried the person overseeing my day won’t be able to coordinate it to my expectations. B. That my set-up may not look nice. I’m not an expert at color swatches and floral selection, never mind lighting and linens. I hope that the look comes together okay.

39

iiii

C. My budget. I’m concerned that I have overspent and am afraid to get the bills after the big day. D. Everything and everyone. I hope that everyone likes it even though I had a difficult time selecting the décor. And, I don’t think I want to know what I spent…but, as long as everyone is happy, that’s all that matters. 5. How would you best describe yourself during the wedding planning process? A. Everything is organized perfectly. I am THE expert at creating my designs. I love to find inspiration & make it fit my budget. B. I am pretty well organized and can negotiate to ensure I find the best deals. However, I have a hard time choosing colors and patterns. I tend to need help with the creative side of my wedding. C. I may not keep a formal budget or exactly know where to find my vendor contracts, but I can tell you the exact color of my bridesmaid dresses, the designer, and what flowers I’m considering for their complementing bouquets. D. I wish I could be organized, but don’t quite know where to start. And I could use some help but I am not sure whom to ask first. 6. When you go shopping with friends, what are you most likely to do? A. My friends may like to shop in many stores, but I know exactly the shops that I prefer and always have the latest coupon.

40

B. I like to start by window shopping. I have a good idea of what I can spend and I want to see what deals are out there first. C. Spend just as much time looking for accessories as I do for my major basics. I am even known to bring a dress or pair of shoes with me in order to find the perfect matching item! D. Ask my friends for advice! I love to get their opinions on what looks good on me. 7. When attending a bridal show, what is most typical of you? A. I come prepared. I like to print out address labels for information and drawings and I bring my planner to take notes. I have a list of what I still need, yet I am open to any new ideas I see as well! B. I take my time. Before arriving, I sometimes look over the vendors attending and visit some of their websites to see if they fit my budget. At the show, I’m not afraid to talk to vendors & ask them questions about pricing, availability, and their past experience. C. I spend most of my time admiring the latest linens, dress designs, and floral centerpieces. It’s like candy for my eyes! D. I like to enjoy the show with my mom and bridesmaids. I can feel overwhelmed with so many things to look at and vendors to talk to so it helps me to have others assist in asking questions and picking out new styles.

41

iiii

8. If you were asked to bring a beverage to a dinner party you were attending, what are you most likely to do? A. Find the perfect pairing that everyone will be talking about! I would first ask the host what is being served and then select the perfect complementing beverage—looking for quality at a somewhat reasonable price, of course. B. Review and Budget! I am known to research online or read the review tabs hanging on store shelves for a selection in only my specified budget. C. Get the party started! I love to stroll aisle by aisle looking for the most beautiful label or cutest name. It gets people talking and puts a smile on their face as soon as I arrive. That is priceless, so I don’t usually worry about the cost. D. Ask for assistance! With my busy schedule, find it helpful to ask a store manager for their recommendations as I stop in on my way to the party. They what is good in their selection, right? I just hold my breath when they ring it up! 9. At your menu tasting, what is most likely to be your main focus? A. Well, I have been dreaming about this since the day I got engaged! I make sure I have my planner to take notes in and bring a camera to take pictures to remember the experience. I’m not intimidated to ask the Chef if I can switch out the fillet for something less expensive or ask for his/her suggestions on unique beverage pairings.

42

B. As most of my budget is going towards food and beverage for my guests, I want to make sure it is money well spent. I have a tendency to ask why there is a “cake cutting fee” and if a “hosted bar” is more economical than an “open bar.” At the end, I request a proposal from the catering manager outlining all my estimated costs. C. Details, Details, Details! My favorite parts include the presentation of food, selecting napkin fold and reviewing the overall table setup. I like to see what linen, silverware, glasses, and plates look like together and whether I’ll need chair covers. D. Everything! I have never been to a menu tasting before and I have no idea what to expect, so I look to the guidance of the catering manager to walk me through it all. 10. What planning “tool” do you find most helpful as you get ready for the big day? A. My wedding planning binder. It has EVERYTHING I need! Whether it’s a place to hold my magazine cut outs, my vendors’ business cards, or my guest list organizer, I can take it all with me anywhere I go. B. My computer. I have organized my guest list, timeline, and budget in up-to-date spreadsheets. I have electronic files where I can find things such as scanned contracts, online receipts and favorite links to wedding vendors. C. Wedding magazines. I look forward to receiving them each month and on the day they arrive, I plan a relaxing soak in the tub and spend the night oohing and ahhing over each page! I love the ideas and sometimes, it makes me want to change what I have already picked. 43

iiii

D. My family and friends. I love to get advice from everyone—especially those who have planned a wedding before. It helps ease my worry about picking the right things. 11. You have just moved into a new home. What are you most likely to do first? A. Create a theme! I find it most helpful to decide on an overall theme for each area of the house and then plan accordingly. It gives me guidance on the style I am looking for as I search stores for specially priced items. B. Wait and review. Instead of shopping right away, I like to live in my new home for a few weeks to get acquainted with it. I make a list of things I’m missing and then, after I’ve saved up, I shop for items that provide great function in my everyday life. C. Paint and decorate! Before even signing the papers, I have picked out paint colors and have already begun to purchase wall hangings and furniture. I can’t stop looking through décor books—I want it all! D. Host an unpacking party. This way, I can get input of my friends and family regarding what looks best where—and I don’t have to sit there starting at all of boxes that would go unpacked if it were up to me! 12. What do you find the most challenging part of your wedding planning thus far? A. Taking everyone’s advice! I have a great vision of what I want and it’s important to me that our special day represents both me and my fiancé. I have been dreaming about this for as long as I can remember and I’m good at making my own decisions.

44

B. Describing the look of the day. I am at a loss when deciding on all the artistic elements such as what dress color best represents my skin tone (what’s the difference between ivory and ivory white?) and deciding on miniature roses vs. spray roses for the corsages(aren’t they the same thing?). C. Definitely staying within a budget! I can’t help but love all of the creative aspects of the wedding, but I just dread looking at the bills and figuring out who is going to sit where. D. Pretty much everything! I’m too busy to spend a lot of time planning my wedding and when I do, I don’t know where to start!

FOUR

OVERLOOKED WEDDING FEES THAT MIGHT CAUSE

OVERSPENDING

Here at Perfect Wedding Guide, we often talk about creating a wedding budget and sticking to it. And now, we want to share with you some hidden pitfalls you should avoid if you want to stick to your budget. These are expenses that you might not be aware of, but you need to consider when planning how you’re going to spend your money. 58

Gown Alterations. It’s very rare to find a wedding gown that fits you perfectly. You will likely at least need to have the length reduced. You may also need the gown taken in around the bust or waist, have a bustle made, and possibly have cups installed so you don’t have to wear a bra. These alterations can add up. Before you order your gown, get an estimate from the salon on what your alteration fees might be and account for those fees in your budget. Bartender fees and cake-cutting fees. Not all caterers and reception sites charge for bartenders or for cutting and serving your cake, but you don’t want to be caught unaware if they do. The time to understand and negotiate these fees is when you are signing your contract. If you are hosting an open bar, don’t be afraid to ask for your site to waive your bartender fee if your guests consume a certain dollar amount. If you are bringing your wedding cake in from a pastry shop and you’d like to avoid a cake-cutting fee, ask if you can order a dessert course to make up for the loss in cake revenue.

From the bride’s favorite musical to her favorite type of candy, inspiration for themes is in no short supply. Here are some of our recent favorites: Throwback Themes. We love the idea of a shower theme based on the decade of the bride’s birth. Got a 90’s bride? Give out scrunchies as party favors and offer guests bean bag chairs. An 80’s bride? Decorate with bright, vibrant (neon-like) colors and load up the iPod with one-hit wonders. A 70’s bride? Bring out the disco ball and bellbottom pants. And let’s not forget our flower child theme for 60’s brides! Opulent Elegance. A la Breakfast at Tiffany’s, hosts are going classic and romantic. From flowy script on the invites to favors brushed with gold, this theme will leave guests breathless! You can even ask guests to dress in their finest for an extra special touch. Garden Party. Simple and sweet, the garden party is a classic shower theme that will never go out of style. Use a fresh spring color palette, soft floral accents, and an assortment of food and beverages such as petit fours, frosted cookies, and pink lemonade to bring this theme together. These are just a few of our favorites. The options are really endless! For more tips, visit HeadOverHeelsWeddingBlog.com

TO BACHELOR AND BACHELORETTE PARTIES

70

Weddings come with many traditions, not the least of which is the famed bachelor and/or bachelorette party. Most of us think of drunken revelry and questionable “clothing optional” activities during these events, but I’ve found that not all couples are comfortable with this. After all, some of the things that happen at these parties can come back to haunt you!

I thought it would be fun to come up with a list of alternatives to Ye Olde Bachelor/Bachelorette Party. Here are a few ideas: Host a party. Some countries have a tradition called the Stag and Doe Party (also called the Hen and Stag Party, Jack and Jill Party, etc.). At these events, guests celebrate the couple’s forthcoming marriage and give them money to use towards their wedding and future life together. Attend an event that has meaning to you. Do you love a particular sports team? Rent a limo and attend one of their games with some of your closest friends. Did you meet at a bar? Take some friends along on a haunted pub crawl. Are you both Christmas fanatics? Go and see the Nutcracker Suite. Take a road trip. Imagine how nice it would be to escape before the wedding to a romantic bed and breakfast. Enjoy some quiet time together without discussing wedding plans. You might be surprised how much it reenergizes you! Enjoy a few laughs. Consider a group outing to the local comedy club. Nothing like a night of laughter to help ease any wedding stress, right? Along the same lines are dueling piano bars and karaoke bars, both fun places to celebrate. Take a class. Just because you’re planning a wedding doesn’t mean you can’t learn something fun and new. Consider taking a dance class, learning how to mix cocktails from a mixologist, or maybe take a painting or pottery class that will allow the two of you to make a special memento together. There are many ways to celebrate your last moments as singles… even if you celebrate together! If you have some other ideas of great bachelor or bachelorette alternatives, please send me an email to susan.southerland@pwg.com and we might include your ideas on our wedding planning blog, Head Over Heels! 71

THE

GROOM’S GUIDE TO BEING THE

HOST with the MOST

The most memorable weddings are the ones where the bride and groom are engaged with one another and with their guests. There is no doubt that it can be hard work smiling all day and night, posing for photos, dancing, and chatting up 150 of your closest friends and family, but if you follow these tips, your guests will marvel at what an amazing groom you are.

72

Before the wedding, review your guest list and become familiar with who’s attending. This will help you remember to whom you are being introduced on the wedding day. Don’t consume too much alcohol. I don’t want to be a party pooper, but if you’re hung over from the rehearsal dinner or sloppy drunk during the wedding reception, your photos will be terrible and it will be much harder for you to make small talk with your guests. Party as hard as you’d like at the bachelor party and on your honeymoon, but be conservative at your wedding.

Prior to the ceremony, mingle with guests as they arrive. Talking with your friends and family will also help relieve pre-wedding jitters. Write your bride a note and have it delivered to the room where she is getting ready. Tell her how much you love her and how excited you are to start spending your life together as husband and wife. 74

Put out fires. Your bride likely did the bulk of the planning up to the big day. If you see something that might upset her, do your best to step in and fix it, even if that means asking for help from your groomsmen or family members. Give a welcome speech. Thank your guests for coming, thank your new in-laws for throwing such an amazing party (if applicable), and toast your beautiful bride. You will make your family proud. Go table to table with your bride and visit your guests. It’s tempting to hang with your buddies at the bar, but it’s proper etiquette to personally speak with each of your guests. Stay on the dance floor as much as you can. Dance with your new wife, with your mom, your sister and your aunt. Help make shy guests feel a part of the festivities by asking them to join you on the dance floor. Don’t leave your bride alone. Make sure when you are on the dance floor she has a dancing partner as well. Take time to have intimate conversations with her and hold her hand as often as possible. Being a great host doesn’t end with the wedding day. Make sure you help your bride write thank you notes after the honeymoon. If you follow these tips, you’re bound to wow your guests as well as your bride. Then you can head off to enjoy your honeymoon! Have you ever eaten so much at dinner that you didn’t have room for dessert? As strange as it sounds, this analogy often applies to weddings and honeymoons. Couples can get so caught up in the planning of their wedding that they neglect planning their honeymoon. This may lead to problems, especially if all of the money budgeted for the wedding is used on the ceremony and reception. For some couples, postponing the honeymoon is the only option. 86

Here are some reasons why:

Budget. As mentioned above, lack of money is the number one reason couples postpone their honeymoons. No Leave. Some couples can’t take a honeymoon because they don’t have the time to take off of work or school. Interest. This may come as a surprise, but some couples are simply too exhausted by the entire planning process to even think about planning their honeymoon. Timing. Some couples want to visit a location that isn’t ideal to visit during the timing of their wedding, such as a Caribbean destination in the heart of hurricane season. In this case, they may postpone until the timing is better. They’re already there. Couples who have a destination wedding often include the honeymoon in their wedding budget because they’re already away from home in a honeymoon setting. When it comes to deciding whether or not to postpone your wedding, be sure to weigh the pros and cons as they apply to your situation. You don’t want to go into debt because you feel you have to go on your honeymoon right after the wedding, and you

might not want to make sacrifices if you choose to honeymoon on a tight budget. Whatever you decide, enjoy those early days together as husband and wife as much as you can. Sometimes, just living in the moment is honeymoon enough!

To help simplify things, let’s place wedding services into two basic categories: trendy or traditional. Trendy weddings feature all of the hottest themes from today’s wedding industry, whereas traditional weddings follow standards set over generations. Trendy weddings will get your guests talking and make a memorable impression, whereas traditional weddings are timeless events that pay homage to our heritage and age well in photos and video. So…which type of wedding should you have?

Trendy or Traditional

• You enjoy living in the “now.” • You consider yourself a no conformist. • You love keeping up with the hottest trends in all areas of your life. • You want your wedding to stand out from all the rest. • Time-honored traditions play an important role in your life. • It’s a part of your religion and/or culture. • You don’t want to “date” your wedding with the trends from only this point in time. • You’re concerned about what your family and guests will think if you stray from tradition.

If you don’t fall clearly within one of these categories, you can always blend the two. You’ll likely find that your tastes stray closer to one than the other as you make your decisions. In the end, what will matter is that you went with what you love most!
