DIFFICULT WEDDING GUEST SCENARIOS (AND HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM) by Susan Southerland
48
49
Sometimes weddings bring out the best and the worst in people. I have seen beautiful demonstrations of love and support, and I have witnessed downright nastiness. The best time to deal with potentially unruly guests is before they show up on the wedding day. Here are a few troubles I’ve encountered over the years and some details of how I handled them.
The raunchy relative who wants to divert attention from the wedding couple. Sometimes future mothers-in-law aren’t happy with their child’s choice of spouse. That was evident in one wedding I had a few years ago. The motherin-law decided she was going to wear a white sequin dress, stating she was going to make sure everyone was looking at her rather than the bride. Naturally, the bride was quite upset that she would be competing with her mother-in-law. After repeated pleas to the groom’s mother that went without acknowledgement, we decided to purchase a bridal gown embellished with stunning gold accents. The bride looked breathtaking in it, and on the wedding day the groom’s mom looked foolish for being in all white and she had to listen to what a stylish, bold choice her daughter-in-law made with such a breathtaking gown. 50
Angry exes crashing the party. One bride I worked with had a nasty breakup with a really troubled boyfriend prior to meeting her fiancé. Once the ex found out about the wedding, he repeatedly threatened to crash the wedding and embarrass the bride. Our solution was to host the wedding at a private club that required that guests be on a list to be admitted onto the property. The security guards were able to deal with the angry ex before he could set foot anywhere near the ceremony and reception. Severe food allergies. This may not be as dramatic an example as the two above, but not following the proper food handling would have resulted in a serious reaction including hospitalization or death for one of my bride’s brothers. To make sure he would be safe, we had a meeting with the chef early in the planning process to make sure the proper menu was created. We met with the chef again two weeks prior to the wedding to make sure that he remembered about the food allergy. To read this article in its entirety, visit HeadOverHeelsWeddingBlog.com 51

DDING
53
If you’re planning a destination wedding, one of the most important tasks is securing accommodations and travel recommendations for your wedding party and guests. This can either be a logistical headache – or a breeze if you choose to work with a destination wedding and honeymoon specialist like Kriss Kintner of Paradise Weddings and Travel. Planning travel and accommodations is a daunting task because it’s subjective. It all depends on what is going on in the market. Tuesday through Thursday or Saturday flights are typically cheaper because they are less traveled. But you can’t guarantee that to be true if fuel prices drop, for example, because airfare can then rise.
54
Kriss compiled the below tips to share with brides looking to make coming to their destination wedding easier and more cost-effective for guests: Use a travel agent. Most agents are paid by the companies they use, so their services are actually free for brides. Travel agents can help your guests save money by securing group rates at hotels and resorts. You also receive piece of mind knowing that you have someone on your side both before and during any travel should you need any assistance.
I
55
Book flights as soon as you can. Flights booked more than two weeks out are almost always cheaper than those booked the week of. There can be last minute deals on flights, but don’t bank on it! If you hold out for a deal that doesn’t come, you will end up paying double what you expected. Once you have found your flight, check back often as airlines can change prices multiple times in one day. Another thing to keep in mind is to clear your cache/cookies when looking online for flights. Websites have been known to actually show higher prices for frequently searched flights. This can be quite a task, but your trusted travel agent can help you!
II
56
Flexibility can save you money. If your dates are flexible, historically the cheapest day to fly is Tuesday (domestic flights) and the most expensive is either Friday or Sunday. Flying from Tuesday to Tuesday will get you a much better rate than Monday to Friday or Saturday. Holidays will always be higher because there is simply more demand with a lot more people traveling.

12 Ids FOR THE PERFECT KIDS’ TABLE by Susan Sutherland
58
CREATING A KIDS’ TABLE WHERE THE YOUNGEST GUESTS CAN HANG OUT AND ENTERTAIN THEMSELVES WILL HELP PREVENT POSSIBLE MELTDOWNS, AND MAKE YOU
LOOK LIKE A HERO.
59
Couples ask me all the time if they should include kids in their wedding. This is a personal decision, so I always suggest they consider what makes the most sense for them and the style they envision with their wedding planning. That said, if you do invite children to your wedding, it’s nice to think about how you can make them feel special. Creating a kids’ table where the youngest guests can hang out and entertain themselves will help prevent possible meltdowns, and make you look like a hero. Here’s how you can put together the perfect kids’ table at your wedding:
60
Id
01
Make the table look awesome. Create a special sign for the kids’ table that says something like, “Where the Cool Kids Are,” or “No Adults Allowed.” Use a whimsical centerpiece and consider offering an alternative form of seating if the space allows it, like benches or bean bag chairs, to really set the table apart.
NO ADULTS ALLOWED
61
Idďż˝
02 62
Present every kid with the same things. We all know that when it comes to sharing, children aren’t always the best at it. Help avoid possible tantrums by making sure every child is treated the same.
Id
03
Give them crayons. I recommend giving each child a pack of their own crayons so they don’t end up fighting over the same color. Admit it: even adults love to color…so hook the kids’ table up!
63
Id
64
04
Cover the table with paper. What fun are crayons if you can’t use them? Don’t frustrate the kids by giving them crayons at a table covered in a nice tablecloth. Use white or brown craft paper to give them something to decorate.
Id
05
Offer snacks they’ll enjoy. Check with your venue first on this one. If it’s approved (or you can order them through the venue), provide kidfriendly snacks like Goldfish Crackers, chocolatecovered raisins, cheese popcorn, pretzels, or graham crackers.
65
Id
06 66
Play-Doh. (‘Nuf said.)
Idďż˝
07
Make them photography helpers. Disposable cameras are inexpensive, so give one to each kid and encourage them to get creative behind the lens. You might be really impressed by what pics you ďŹ nd after the photos are developed!
67
Idďż˝
08 68
Keep them busy with activity books and/or crafts. Kids get bored easily, so make sure they have plenty to do by giving them activity books and/or crafts they can do at their table. Just make sure you don’t choose anything too complicated or messy!
Idďż˝
09
Host a Scavenger Hunt. Create a Scavenger Hunt that only the kids can participate in (I recommend that it begin after the meal is served). Ask that the older kids assist the younger ones, and offer the winner(s) a prize.
69
Idďż˝
10 70
Put a bowl of Legos on the table. This can entertain some kids for the entire event!
Id
11
Provide an alternative for their dress shoes. Kids get blisters, too, so provide them with flip flops, ballet-style slippers, or colorful no-skid socks to slip on during the reception. 71
Idďż˝
12 72
Have games on the table. Bring a selection of games, jigsaw puzzles, and playing cards for the kids to use. Opt for games where a number of kids can play at a variety of ages, and avoid games that make noise.
As long as you make your
st gu
feel welcome and give them something to occupy their time, you’ll have a win on your hands! We welcome your ideas for the perfect kids’ table, so please share your thoughts with us.

5 Unique Ways to Incorporate Family Tradition in Your Wedding
One of the most time-honored traditions in weddings is the adage, “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue.” Although the popularity of this tradition waned over the past decade, it’s making a resurgence. Weddings are such sentimental events. What better time to incorporate things that hold meaning to you and your family? Here are some of the unique ways some of my couples have infused their weddings with Something Old: 84
un
WEAR PART OF A GOWN WORN BY A BELOVED
FAMILY MEMBER.
OldSouthStudios
Rather than wearing an actual hand-me-down gown, one of my brides had a piece of her grandmother’s gown sewn into the lining of hers. The groom also had a piece of the gown sewn into the lining of his suit vest. They felt it brought them even closer on the wedding day.
85
deux
BROACH BOUQUETS. I loved the broach bouquet created by one of my brides. She sent out an e-mail to every guest prior to the wedding day asking for any broaches she could borrow. Then she carefully arranged them into a stylish, vintage-inspired bouquet. All but one of the pins was returned after the wedding, but the photos of the incredible bouquet will last a lifetime!. CELEBRATING LOVE.
One of my favorite ways to see couples honoring their families is having the DJ ask that couples of a certain age take the dance oor. Sometimes they ask for the couple who has been married the longest, or it may be couples who have been married for more than a certain number of years. It’s a sweet way to recognize true and timeless love, and a very creative way to bring in the “Something Old.”

PICTURES. I’ve had couples hang black and white images from their grandparents’ weddings on the ends of the church pews. Other couples have created jewelry with old photos, such as keychains and lockets, to carry with them. Sometimes having that image to look at for inspiration can make the wedding day complete.

“In my years as a wedding planner, I’ve encountered many a styling “emergency.” From torn gowns to shoes that didn’t t, there has been no shortage of problems to solve! When it comes to hair and makeup tips, however, I prefer to leave that up to the experts. Today I thought I’d share some of the tips I’ve learned from professional wedding hair and makeup artists over the years.”

Do
Decide early what you’d like your hair to look like on the wedding day. If you want a long style, you’ll have to grow your hair out or get extensions. 94
Tonya Beaver Photography
Get a trial run about three months before the wedding. No matter who is doing your hair and makeup on the wedding day, schedule a time to have a trial run. This will make everything go more smoothly because the stylist will already know which colors and products to use. Jessie Felix Photography

Wear sunscreen and avoid self-tanning. Especially close to the wedding day, you don’t want to burn your skin or make unsightly tan lines. If you feel you need more pigment in your skin tone, exfoliate and then have an expert apply the color.
Wear as many oil-free makeup products as possible, especially if you’re likely to perspire. You should also carry an oil-blotting sheet for use between pictures.
Pay attention to that beautiful smile. If you’re prone to yellowing, consider using an at-home whitening kit a couple of weeks before the wedding so you’re photo-ready on the big day.

6 TIPS for planning a
short Engagement There are a number of reasons that couples might not want to wait to get married. They might have to work around a military deployment, an ailing family member, or a marriage visa requirement, among many other things. If you ďŹ nd yourself in this situation, here are some things you should keep in mind.
98
99
1 2 100
Budget.
No matter your timeline, establishing your budget should always be the first step of planning your wedding. This goes hand-in-hand with creating a guest list, since the more people you invite, the less your budget will stretch.
Marriage license laws.
In some states, you’re required to undergo marriage counseling and/or blood testing before you’ll be issued a license. It’s important that you research your state’s laws ahead of time so that you can meet the requirements before the wedding.
3 4
Venue.
If you’re planning a traditional wedding and have less than two months to plan, invitations need to go out. That means you have to have a wedding date, venue, and ceremony start time chosen as soon as possible. Note that availability might be limited on short notice, especially if you’re getting married during a popular time of year. To combat this, seek out less conventional venues or off-peak days and times for your event.
Go shopping.
You, your future spouse, and anyone you ask to stand up for you at your wedding need to get attire. Due to time constraints, you may have to buy everything off the rack as opposed to custom orders. Fortunately, designer clothing can be found in many ready-to-wear stores, so you should have plenty of options. To read this article in its entirety, visit

Today’s couples aren’t afraid to stray from tradition, and they’re coming up with some exciting ways to spice up the buffet line. The most popular trend we’re seeing is the incorporation of various food bars at wedding receptions. There are tons of options that you can do, from cupcakes to candy to chips and dips. Let’s check out a few of our favorites!
105
Sliders. These portable little bites have ballooned in wedding popularity over the past 5-10 years. They can be made of anything from burgers to buffalo chicken to gyro meat. Serve these up with a condiment station, and you’re bound to delight your guests.
International themes. Think Greek by offering a food bar ďŹ lled with different kinds of olives, Greek cheeses and yogurt, and bite-size spanakopita, or a Mexican theme with a taco, salsa, or churro bar, or an Asian theme with stir fry or sushi. This is a great way to bring out your heritage! 106
Breakfast. If you’re having a brunch wedding, choose a favorite breakfast food items and feature it. Think pancakes, waffles, biscuits, omelets, or even bacon.
Milkshakes. Ice cream bars are great, but imagine having a station where guests can create their own handspun milkshakes. Talk about nostalgic, memorable, and delicious!
Carnival fare. Offer up flavored popcorn, different kinds of caramel and candied apples, corn dogs, colorful cotton candy, or some other kind of carnival fare. Guests won’t be able to resist these indulgent favorites. 107
Donuts. From sweet to savory, you can’t go wrong with a donut bar. Stock this bar with filled donuts, traditional ring donuts, donut holes, and a wide variety of dipping sauces for guests to try. This is a food bar that guests will love any time of the day.
Potato bar. Almost everyone enjoys potatoes, and they’re not very expensive. Present guests with whipped potatoes, French fried potatoes, and baked potatoes along with a variety of toppings and let them create their perfect spud.
Fruit and champagne. Consider providing a fresh and vibrant food bar with an assortment of sliced fruit served with champagne. Guests can eat or drink them separately or pair them together. You can even include some creative recipes for them to try. There are no rules when it comes to creating food bars. Consider how the theme suits your wedding and your tastes, and have fun with it! What food bar options would you suggest? 108

Most couples think of the big expenses when it comes to planning a wedding: food and beverage, the flowers, the photographer, and so on. Many couples fail to budget for the smaller or unexpected expenses, which can really add up and send you into a budget crisis. Here are some wedding costs that you may not know about, but should: PHOTOS AND VIDEO Reprints and Duplication: Photographers and videographers have various ways of structuring their packages. Some charge for time only and surrender a high resolution DVD of the images. Others have a package that includes their time and an album. There are also some who charge for their time and then give a credit towards purchasing products. Make sure you know what end result you want when choosing your vendors. Overtime: Pay careful attention to the amount of time the photographers and videographers include with their packages. I’ve found that six hours of coverage is usually sufficient for a ceremony and reception that takes place in one location. Eight hours is better if the ceremony and reception are in different locations or if you would like photos and video of you and your wedding party while you are getting ready. Be mindful of the time that’s included and be sure to include overtime in the original budget if necessary. FORMAL WEAR Wedding Gown: The most overlooked expense in wedding gowns is alterations. Alteration fees can add up very quickly. Plan to add $150-$300 for wedding gown alterations. Accessories: Don’t forget about jewelry, veil, shape wear, and the bride’s shoes. These can add on another $300-$800, depending on the bride’s taste. Tuxedo Rentals: Late return fees. Make sure you know when your tuxedos need to be returned. Keeping them extra days can cost you a lot of money. Find someone trustworthy to return them in a timely manner or offer that service yourself. Weddings can take more than a year to plan. In the process, couples can lose sight of what is arguably supposed to be the most romantic night of your lives . . . your ďŹ rst night as a married couple. We thought we’d share some tips to make sure your wedding night is everything you hope it will be!
112
TO PLAN YOUR ROMANTIC WEDDING NIGHT: Wrap things up at a reasonable time. If you don’t want to be so exhausted that you head to bed and immediately fall asleep, get a full night’s sleep the night before and end your reception at a reasonable time. Remember, you and your spouse can leave a little before everyone else if you want. You’re the guests of honor! Curb the alcohol intake. Many couples want to celebrate their nuptials with champagne and/ or cocktails, and that’s okay. It’s a celebration, after all! But know your limits, and keep the coming wedding night in mind. You want to be clear-headed and alert to focus on your new spouse. Get away from it all. Consider booking a room somewhere away from where your guests are staying. If you stay near everyone else, you run the risk of getting disturbed by well-wishers, or even thinking more about whether your guests are comfortable than about your new spouse. Stay somewhere sumptuous (or at least nicer than usual). It’s your wedding night…of course you should indulge! Even if you can’t afford the honeymoon suite, spring for something nicer than you usually would. It will help to set the mood if you’re feeling like royalty. Have a late-night snack. Many couples get so caught up with making the rounds to thank their guests and dancing the night away that they neglect to eat much of their reception food. Arrange for a light snack of cheese and crackers, chocolate-covered strawberries, or something similar that the two of you can enjoy while you relax and revisit the wedding day together. Exchange gifts. Some couples exchange tokens of affection before the wedding, but it’s also perfectly acceptable to exchange them after the wedding. In fact, we think it’s a lovely way to begin your new life together! Yes, your wedding night is meant to be romantic, but be realistic. It will come at the end of an exciting and exhausting day. Don’t put too much pressure on yourselves to make it “perfect.” Just celebrate your love for each other and prepare for a very happy marriage to come! 113
EN WAYS V E S TO KEEP COOL THROUGH THE
Wedding Planning Process 114
I’ve worked with a lot of couples over the years, and I’ve seen many brides and grooms lose their cool in the course of planning their weddings. It’s an easy thing to do considering it’s going to be one of the most important days of your lives. Take it from me, though…you’ll both be happier on your big day if you make every effort to avoid reaching your breaking point!

HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS ON
How to Make Your Planning AS STRESS-FREE AS POSSIBLE:
1
Give yourself time. The more time you have between your engagement and the wedding day, the more you can pace yourself on the planning. For instance, it’s much less stressful (on you and your budget) to interview and hire vendors over a few months than to try and fit it all into a few weeks.
2
Hire a wedding planner. If your budget permits it, hire a wedding planner. He or she will take the lead in your planning, guiding you throughout the process and serving as your voice of reason in times of stress.
3 4 116
Go on “plan-free” dates. As often as possible, take time with your future spouse to do something you both enjoy. Make that time “plan-free,” and maybe even impose a fun consequence like having to give out a kiss - if they slip up and mention the wedding plans. Keep it simple. I encourage couples to simplify as much as possible as they plan their weddings. Rather than try to book a separate ceremony and reception space, you might consider booking everything in one location. Rather than pay for two different floral setups, repurpose some of your ceremony floral.
5
Nail down your vision. Many brides get bogged down in the details. Using photos for inspiration, put together a scrapbook or Pinterest board with images that inspire you. Share these with your wedding vendors and rely on their expertise to help guide you into bringing that vision to life. Until you decide what you really want, however, it’s hard for your plans to progress…so make your decision and stick to it!
6
Get organized. Make use of planning checklists such as those found on Perfect Wedding Guide, use a spreadsheet (such as Excel or Google docs) to manage your guest list, and set up reminders for yourself when payments are due. The more organized you are, the less stress you’ll have as the big day nears.
7
When it doubt, try it out. If you’re anxious because you’re not sure what your reception centerpieces will look like or whether your hair and makeup stylist can achieve the look you want or if your cake will taste as decadent as promised, ask for a preview. While there might be a charge, you can request a sample centerpiece from the florist, a trial-run of hair and makeup, and a tasting
These are just a few ways to help keep your cool during the planning process. Remember, it’s likely that little things won’t go as planned along the way, but nothing is as important as you and your future spouse finally saying “I Do!”
117
118
Wedding favors are a classic wedding tradition, but they’re often something couples don’t think about until near the end of their wedding planning. By that time, the budget can be greatly depleted or nonexistent. What can you do if you want to give your guests something nice as a thank-you without going broke? Below are some fantastic budget-friendly wedding favor ideas. The best part is that guests can keep for as long as they’d like (as opposed to food). Try these out or come up with your own: Luggage Tags. Destination weddings are popular in Florida, and some couples have given their guests personalized luggage tags as favors. There are many options out there, many for less than $1.50 each! Sunglasses. If you’re having an outdoor wedding, sunglasses are a must! Sites like Etsy customize sunglasses with your names and the wedding date, making them great wedding favors. Each pair is less than two dollars. Personalized Lip Balm. Not only is this an inexpensive gift (pricing out at less than 50 cents each on many sites), but it’s practical too. You could place it in a pretty bag with a travel-sized hand lotion and small packs of tissues and make wonderful care packages as your favors! Lottery Tickets. This one may seem odd, but it can actually be a lot of fun for your guests. Place each ticket in a specially-designed holder. Each personalized favor will end up less than three dollars.
119
120
Personalized Tea Bags and Tea Infusers. If you’re having a garden wedding, you can find some absolutely lovely tea-inspired wedding favors such as the ones on Beau-Coup.com. Personalized tea bags placed in each teacup would be a nice touch, as would a personalized tea infuser. Together, they cost less than five dollars. Cookie Cutters. Some brides love the idea of gifting your guests with cookie cutters attached to beautiful recipe cards featuring your favorite cookie recipes. If you’re not into baking, you could just gift cookie cutters personalized with your names and the wedding date. Personalized Mason Jars. Rustic-chic is still popular, and Mason jars cost less than a dollar each. You can create personalized labels in your wedding colors and tie them around the jars, or use etching tools to personalize the jars themselves. For a little extra money, you could even include something in the jars, like the ingredients for grown-up hot cocoa. Donations. If you and your future spouse are more into philanthropy than favors, consider making a donation in your guests’ names to a charity of your choice. Place personalized note cards at each guest’s seat letting them know about the donation. You’d be surprised how many guests appreciate this type of gift! There are also plenty of food-based wedding favors that wouldn’t cost much, but many guests like to keep their favors as keepsakes. To find the perfect favors for your wedding, visit ShopPWG.com 121

While there is no shortage of happiness on a couple’s wedding day, your parents will likely experience some bittersweet feelings. It’s a beautiful celebration, but also an end of an era – it’s not easy “giving away” your daughter or son. Consider these ideas to sneak into your wedding planning to show your mom and groom’s mom some extra love on your wedding day. Make her feel included by tying in her wedding look with yours. We just got married on Mother’s Day weekend, so my husband and I really wanted our moms to feel special on our wedding day. As our color palette included soft pinks with my bridesmaids in blush, we decided it would be fitting for our moms to be in shades of pink as well. I went with both our moms to pick out their dresses, ensuring each had an element that tied into my dress. My mom’s dress had a beaded neckline to match my beaded sash, and my mother-in-law’s dress tied in the lace element of my dress with a beautiful lace overlay. Grooms, customize your mother-son dance song. There are countless blogs and articles naming the most popular mother-son dance songs, but if none of those seem to represent your relationship with your mom, have your band or wedding singer customize lyrics to make them better fit. For example, my husband changed the words to “The Best Day” by Taylor Swift to say: I have an excellent [mother]. [Her] strength is making me stronger. God smiles on my little [sister]. Brides, give her your bouquet instead of tossing it. Rather than having your bouquet ripped apart by a handful of hopeful girls wanting to get their hands on it for good luck, consider presenting your bouquet to your mom. What woman doesn’t like receiving flowers, especially when they’re from your daughter’s most special day? It’s a nod to your mom for all she’s done and a symbol of your appreciation for her. WEDDING
BUDGET
s er t s Bu
Most people know the primary wedding budget “hotspots.” Food and beverage, ceremony and/or reception space fees, floral and décor, photography, videography, etc. I’ve provided wedding budgeting tips in the past, but sometimes things can sneak up on you in the course of planning your wedding, and they can blow your budget out of the water. To read this article in its entirety, visit HeadOverHeelsWeddingBlog.com (search: wedding budget busters)
131
HERE ARE TEN OF THE BIGGEST CULPRITS AND HOW TO AVOID GETTING TAKEN BY SURPRISE:
1 POSTAGE.
It can be hard to know exactly how much the postage for your wedding invitations will cost. Wedding invitations come in many shapes and sizes, and the contents will weigh differently depending on what you include . . . then there’s the postage for the RSVPs. Ask the stationer if they can estimate postage costs before you make your invitation decisions. On average, you’ll want to budget at least $150 to mail about 100 wedding invitations.
ACCESSORIES.
Couples don’t always think about necklaces, earrings, bracelets, belts, tie pins, cufflinks, socks, shoes, or watches when they set their wardrobe budget. To cut down on unexpected expenses, consider borrowing some of these items from friends or family members. It will make for nice sentiment. 132
2
3 BUFFETS.
By nature, a buffet offers guests the option of eating as much food as they want. If they don’t fill up on their first visit to the buffet, they can go back a second or third time, potentially making your food costs skyrocket. To avoid unexpected expenses, ask the catering manager to closely monitor food consumption, and ask if you can cap items once they run out.
WARDROBE ALTERATIONS.
You’ve heard this before, but it bears repeating. Wedding gown alterations aren’t cheap, and many brides and bridesmaids forget to include them in their wardrobe budget. Depending on the style of the gown and how much work needs to be done, brides can easily expect to pay several hundred dollars in alterations.

Brittany & Justin

Brittany and Justin married in Lake Como on one of the most beautiful corners of the lake at Villa La Cassinella. 60 guests joined them for a threeday aair. The festivities started with a family style welcome dinner at the intimate Al Veluu overlooking the lake, which featured the Milan symphony orchestra. The wedding day started with guests being picked up by private boat and delivered to the Villa. The head mixologist from the Bvlgari Hotel Milan curated the cocktails for the special day and attendees were welcomed with imported champagne from France and fresh barriers, selected by the bride. The bride was preceded by her 3lb maltipoo and her mother as a string quartet serenaded her down the aisle. Dinner was held in a magical tent featuring endless candles, silk tablecloths and gold-rimmed china and crystal. The bride and groom performed a choreographed tango for their ďŹ rst dance complete with lunges, jumps and dips. After the tango, the live band erupted into dance music and the crowd danced the night away and concluded with ďŹ reworks. 139
