TOP 5 THINGS YOU

SHOULDN’ T FORGET TO DO ON YOUR WEDDING DAY

By Susan Southerland

So much time and effort goes into planning a wedding. Sometimes couples get so caught up in their plans that they forget some important things on the big day. We’re here to share with you the top five things you absolutely shouldn’t forget to do on your wedding day. 53

1. STAY HYDRATED

Whether or not you’re planning on drinking alcohol at your wedding, it’s so important to drink water throughout the day. Dehydration (especially when combined with stress) can lead to heart palpitations, headaches, shaking, and lightheadedness. The last thing you want to do is faint on your wedding day because you didn’t remember to drink some water!

2. EAT THE FOOD YOU’RE PAYING FOR

Many times, couples miss their cocktail hours due to picture taking. They then enter the reception, have their first dance, and begin mingling with guests. It’s important to remember to eat some of the food you’re paying for. Ask your wedding planner (or a relative) to bring you a few food selections during photos, and make sure you partake of the meal at your reception.

3. TOUCH UP YOUR MAKEUP

Brides, you’ll be photographed the entire day. Make sure you have touchup makeup (at least lipstick) handy any time you need it. You’ll be thankful when you get those photos back…especially the un-retouched family pics!

4. BRING A CHANGE OF SHOES

Unless you’re wearing flip-flops or sneakers down the aisle, the odds are your shoes h will ill bbe causing i your ffeet to ache by the time you reach the reception. Bring a pair of comfortable shoes to change into so you can dance the night away in comfort.

54

5. TAKE A FEW MINUTES TO SOAK IT ALL IN

The single-most common thing we hear from newlyweds is that their wedding day went by in a flash. Don’t forget to take a few minutes to take a deep breath, relax, and take it all in. That way, the memories will really stick with you for years to come.

These may not seem like critical things to remember on your wedding day, but trust us‌ they are!

55

MEANINGS BEHIND POPULAR

Flowers BY SAMANTHA CROTTY

It’s easy to select a wedding flower based off of what it looks like. But have you ever wondered what your selected flower means? 56

57

58

When I think of flower meanings, I immediately think back to a scene in The Wedding Planner with Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey. As the two characters are walking through a flower market, Mary (Lopez) explains that she and the bride have already selected the base for the arrangements and suggests that Steve (McConaghay) point out anything else that may jump out to him. As they walk he points out a pale pink flower with multiple hanging buds. Mary responds with one of my favorite quotes from that movie: “Interesting. This is called the Bleeding Heart, the official funeral flower of Tibet.” Immediately Steve begins to sarcastically say how he is so good at this and the scene continues. To avoid being in the same boat as Steve, I have done the leg work for you. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular wedding flowers and see their real meanings.

59

The ancient Greeks and Romans associated roses with the goddesses of love, Aphrodite and Venus. Roses have been the longtime symbolism of love. Not to mention, each color has a distinct meaning.

• RED: Signifies enduring passion, the lovers rose. • WHITE: Represents humility and innocence. • YELLOW: Expresses friendship and joy. • PINK: Embodies gratitude, appreciation and admiration. • ORANGE: Means enthusiasm and desire. • WHITE LILAC AND PURPLE: Represent enchantment and love at first sight. 60

Discovered in the 16th Century by Spanish botanists in the sandy hillside of Central America. The dahlia is known to represent inner strength and creativity. When given as a gift, the flower expresses sentiments of dignity and elegance. It is also the symbol of a commitment and bond that is to last forever.

61

Story has it that Paeon, the physician to the Gods, received this flower from Apollo’s Mother on Mount Olympus though there are several variations to this tale. The Peony is known as the flower of riches and honor, and an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage.

62

Originally discovered in Japan, Hydrangeas were later named by the Greeks. Debates still remain on the symbolism of the flower. Some suggest that the flower represents vanity and boastfulness, whereas others suggest they represent anything that’s sincerely heartfelt. 63

PERUVIAN: Represents friendship and devotion. WHITE STARGAZER: Expresses sympathy. PINK STARGAZER: Signifies wealth and prosperity. First discovered in a villa in Crete around 1580 B.C., the lily has long played a role in ancient mythology. Beloved by the Greeks, they believed the lily sprouted from the milk of Hera, the queen of the gods. As a whole, the lily symbolizes humility and devotion. While white lilies symbolize chastity and virtue, other varieties became popular and brought with them additional meanings.

64

Known in ancient Greece as the flower of virility, Greek women believed that by feeding either a large or small orchid tuber to their unborn child’s father, it would produce a certain outcome of gender. The symbolism for the orchid shifted to luxury during the Victorian era, and today this same sense of magnificence and artful splendor continues, with orchids representing rare and delicate beauty. 65

QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD ASK

BEFORE WRITING YYOUR VOWS by Susan s n Southerland

Writing tiing ng yo your own marriage vows can be really romantic n c - and n equally as daunting. Fear not! I’m here tto o guide g e yyo you th through this process. By answering a questions, you can craft vows that your few ew important im an q qu e guests g uests stts s (and yo your u fu future spouse) will love! 66

67

As you’re beginning the process of writing your own vows, answer these questions: Question 1:

What do you remember most about the first time you met?

Question 2:

What is the one thing you love most about your future spouse? (You can list several qualities you love and then end with the top one.)

Question 3:

How has your life changed since the day you met?

Question 4:

Is there anything in particular your future spouse does that makes you laugh, or picks you up when you’re down?

Question 5:

When did you first know you wanted to spend the rest of your life with him/her?

Question 6:

Is there anything (a hobby or sport, for example) the two of you enjoy that will be a part of your life together? 68

Question 7:

Are there any challenges you’ve faced together? If so, how did you overcome them?

Question 8:

What do you want to achieve together during your marriage?

Question 9:

How can you be the best spouse ever?

Question 10:

What do you promise to do throughout your marriage? (These can be sweet, funny, or - even better - a blend of the two…whatever suits you as a couple!)

Once you’ve answered these questions, you should have a nice flow for your vows: how you met, what first struck you about him/her, the things you’ve learned to love about him/ her since then, what you’ve faced together and how you support each other, what you look forward to in the future, and what you personally vow to your future spouse.

VOILA!

YOU’VE WRITTEN YOUR VOWS.

CONGRATULATIONS!

By Samantha Crotty

For those of you who might be unfamiliar with the acronym, LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. Same-sex marriage is now legal in the U.S., which means you may attend a same-sex wedding or participate in one in the near future. How exciting! Here are some wedding etiquette tips and traditions that you should know:

77

There isn’t always an exchange of rings. While some couples stick with tradition and opt to purchase complementing wedding rings, some couples are exchanging watches or other tokens of their love and commitment to each other instead. The processional can get creative. Unlike traditional weddings where the groom and his attendants process ďŹ rst and wait at the end of the aisle for the bridal attendants and bride to process (usually escorted by one or both of her parents), many same-sex couples walk down the aisle together without their parents or bridal party, or meet halfway down the aisle. There’s plenty of creativity with this part of the ceremony. 78

Bridesmaids and groomsmen? Not like you might think. Samesex weddings often have mixed genders in positions of honor within the wedding party. Rather than a maid of honor, for example, you might have a man of honor or two best men, and so on for females. Listen to how the couple addresses each other. Some same-sex couples refer to themselves as partners, life partners, husbands, wives, or spouses. Listen to how they address one another and refer to them the same way.

Even unsupportive family should be invited. For samesex couples who are wondering if you should invite a family member to your wedding who hasn’t been supportive of your relationship, the answer is yes. You’re only getting married once, and everyone important to you deserves the opportunity to attend.

Don’t expect all the same traditions as opposite-sex weddings. You may be used to seeing certain wedding traditions that apply to brides or grooms (the bouquet toss or garter toss, for example) that you’re less likely to see at a same-sex wedding. Just go with the flow.

Even unsupportive family should attend. If you’re the family member of a same-sex couple who has invited you to their wedding and you don’t personally support the idea of samesex marriage, set aside your personal feelings for those few hours and attend the wedding. Please refrain from sharing your views on this subject when it comes to their wedding. Everyone will mingle. There isn’t likely to be a side designated for each member of the wedding couple during the ceremony. It’s more likely that guests will be encouraged to sit wherever they’d like. Reception seating is likely to be mixed, too.

You’ve selected the perfect dress, picked a great venue, taste-tested the food, sampled your cake, have the most gorgeous flowers and a DJ to get your guests dancing all night long. With all of that done, it is time to focus on YOU! On your wedding day, you deserve to look your absolute best. In fact we believe every bride should look perfect! Below you will find the tips that are most important when it comes to beauty.

focus on your skin. Now is the time to really start using a daily skin regiment, if you don’t already do so. Though we love makeup as much as the next person, it can only cover up so much. Your skin is the key ingredient for that awless look you want on your wedding day.

84

Kay Kroshus

85

schedule a trial run...or two. Be sure to setup a trial run with your choice make-up artist at least three weeks before your wedding. You can then schedule a second run if you so choose. Be sure to bring references with you so the artist has an idea of what you are looking for. Keep in mind your skin tones when selecting. If you have Dita Von Teese color tones, a look similar to Kim Kardashian is not going to blend correctly.

get all-day wear. Your wedding day is not a quick in-and-out visit, it is a full out day. With that primers are essential! If you have hired a makeup artist (which we highly suggest), they will know this commandment. However if you are doing your own wedding day makeup, be sure to pick up a primer and become familiar with it. A light coat is all you will need to get you through your big day.

87

88

hide the imperfections. Don’t sweat if a pesky breakout appears, note it to your make-up artist and they will conceal it accordingly. Same with any dark circles that may occur due to lack of sleep from your excitement for becoming a wife.

Freeland Photography LLC

89

stay neutral. Your wedding day focuses on the love you both share for one another. It is not about being the trendiest person in the room. We recommend a more neutral look over something overly dramatic. Why you ask? A neutral look will limit your amount of touch ups, plus will give that “natural beauty look we all aspire to have.

90

say YES to waterproof. Your wedding day will be an emotional time. To take caution, we highly recommend using a waterproof mascara to avoid any black tears from lining your cheeks.

don’t be afraid of color. Even though one rule is to stay neutral, we also recommend you not be afraid of color. Remember you are wearing a form of white, which you do not want to match identically.

95

keep nails simple. Whether with a classic french manicure or a pale pink, you want your nails to be polished not taking over the spotlight.

a touch-up kit is your friend. Once you’ve determined what your wedding day makeup will look like, be sure to purchase the products for touch ups. All of them can be placed in a small cosmetic bag that your MOH can maintain throughout the wedding day/night. As a reminder, photos will be taken the whole time and you want your make-up to always be on point.

97

98

don’t rush. Leave enough time on your wedding day. Schedule your make-up and hair appointments accordingly on the day of. You will already be stressed enough that day, you DO NOT need to be frantically speeding through your make-up.

Although everyone wants to have a perfect wedding day, there’s no getting around the fact that things often come up that we don’t expect. The trick is not to panic when these wedding day emergencies happen. Be prepared to handle these typical emergencies that could come up on your big day by following these tips:

101

102

A spill on your wedding gown. We encourage brides to forgo foods and drinks that might stain their gowns, but sometimes spills happen outside of the bride’s control. Have a stick of fabric chalk available in your gown’s color. That way, you can blot (never rub) the stain to remove it as much as possible and then cover it up with chalk for the rest of the event. You’ll then want the stain treated by a professional dry cleaner after the wedding.

103

104

Uncooperative children. We love kids, but you never know what might happen when they’re standing up in your wedding. If you have a rambunctious ring bearer, don’t let him carry the actual rings…give him replicas. If your flower girl doesn’t want to walk down the aisle, see if she’ll walk with one of the adults in the wedding party, or just let her sit with her parents and forgo the flower petals. It’ll still be a beautiful ceremony!

105

106

Gasp a pimple! How dare a zit interfere with your glorious moment? If you ďŹ nd the pimple too close to your ceremony to have a dermatologist treat it, try covering it with mint toothpaste or yogurt for a couple of hours to help reduce the swelling and redness. Visine (which is always great to have on-hand) can help, too. After you’ve done what you can, concealer will become your best friend.

107

108

Gown tears. Sometimes wedding gowns tear. A strap might come apart, the waistline might rip due to stepping on the skirt, a button might pop off…it happens. Bring along a small sewing kit with the essentials: thread that matches your gown, needles of various sizes, a thimble, and scissors. In a pinch, safety pins will work, too…and they’re great in the event a zipper malfunctions.

109

110

The inappropriate toast. If alcohol is involved, you run the risk of a best man, maid of honor, or relative standing up and giving an inappropriate wedding speech. If you happen to notice their level of intoxication before the toast, just ask them to refrain from taking the mic. If you don’t catch it until mid-speech, ask a member of the bridal party to cue the DJ to play some music and take the mic from the oender.

111

112

Shoe mishaps. I once had to use a corkscrew to make a bridesmaid’s shoes large enough to comfortably fit her feet. I’ve Super Glued more heels and soles back in place than I can remember. Bring a utility tool (like a Swiss Army Knife) and strong adhesive to address most common shoe emergencies.

113

114

A ruined manicure. Since we use our hands so much, chips and gouges to our nails are always a possibility. Keep your polish color in your wedding day emergency kit so you can touch up your beautiful nails as needed.

115

116

Forgotten formalwear. It’s not uncommon for wedding attendants to forget a part of their ensemble. Socks, ties, vests, cufflinks, jewelry, etc. If a male attendant has forgotten something, call the closest tux or suit shop and ask if they have anything close to what you need. Even if the article of clothing is missing or different, most people won’t notice. Ask your photographer to position the “guilty party” in such a way that the missing article isn’t obvious. These are just some of the most common wedding day emergencies and how to handle them. Stock up your wedding day emergency kit, prep your bridal party in advance for any possible issues, and assure yourself that even if something goes wrong, it’ll still be okay. After all, you’re marrying the love of life…what more do you need?

LATE NIGHT SNACKS TO SURPRISE YOUR

BY SAMANTHA CROTTY

My favorite part of every wedding is when the groom sees his

bride for the first time. Whether it is during a first look or as she walks down the aisle, he is always in awe of her beauty. With that said, my second favorite part is the late night treat.

118

119

Think about it: Dinner happened about two hours ago and you’ve been drinking and dancing since. It only makes sense that a snack get passed around to keep the momentum going (and to eliminate any said hangover from occurring). Whether it is passed to the guests while on the dance floor or as they depart the reception, a late night treat is the way to go. Consider one of these options:

Coffee Bar This is one bar that will keep the party going strong all night long. Whether you have it setup while cake is being passed or as everyone is on the dance floor, this station is sure to please everyone. You can even spruce it up by adding a coffee liquor or sweet topping to the table like sprinkles and marshmallows.

120

Milk and Cookies

Sure they had cake, but wouldn’t it be a sweet touch to have a server pass out a classic? Keep it simple with a chocolate chip cookie and a glass of milk. Or consider having a shooter glass ďŹ lled with chocolate milk, rimmed with sprinkles and topped with a snickerdoodle cookie. With cookies and milk, the possibilities are endless.

121

Fried Pies

122

Let’s be honest, anything fried is the way to go. Especially when you’ve been dancing all night. Fried pies are a cute and portable way to go. Depending on the company you select, they may even send one of their own to walk around and pass out the pies – like Dales Fried Pies. If you elect to have a station instead, guests can help themselves as the night progresses. In Atlanta there is The Varsity. I’ve been to a wedding there that featured their famous apple and peach fried pies setup at a station, and it was an amazing treat!

Mini

Meal

We know your wedding guests have already had some kind of meal, whether a plated meal or buffet option. And you are probably thinking how could they be hungry enough for another meal? You’re right. However I am talking about a mini meal. Just a small bite to keep them going. Consider using a small scale version of cheeseburgers, ďŹ sh and chips, grilled cheese or even corndogs.

123

Popcorn This late night snack can bring out your creative side. Why you ask? You can either hire a wedding vendor to come in and setup a popcorn station or you can do-ityourself by creating fun bags preďŹ lled. Simply provide the bags to your venue and ask that their staff set them out at a certain time. 124

Most couples think of the big expenses when it comes to planning a wedding: food and beverage, the flowers, the photographer, and so on. Many couples fail to budget for the smaller or unexpected expenses, which can really add up and send you into a budget crisis. Here are some wedding costs that you may not know about, but should: PHOTOS AND VIDEO Reprints and Duplication: Photographers and videographers have various ways of structuring their packages. Some charge for time only and surrender a high resolution DVD of the images. Others have a package that includes their time and an album. There are also some who charge for their time and then give a credit towards purchasing products. Make sure you know what end result you want when choosing your vendors. Overtime: Pay careful attention to the amount of time the photographers and videographers include with their packages. I’ve found that six hours of coverage is usually sufficient for a ceremony and reception that takes place in one location. Eight hours is better if the ceremony and reception are in different locations or if you would like photos and video of you and your wedding party while you are getting ready. Be mindful of the time that’s included and be sure to include overtime in the original budget if necessary. FORMAL WEAR Wedding Gown: The most overlooked expense in wedding gowns is alterations. Alteration fees can add up very quickly. Plan to add $150-$300 for wedding gown alterations. Accessories: Don’t forget about jewelry, veil, shape wear, and the bride’s shoes. These can add on another $300-$800, depending on the bride’s taste. Tuxedo Rentals: Late return fees. Make sure you know when your tuxedos need to be returned. Keeping them extra days can cost you a lot of money. Find someone trustworthy to return them in a timely manner or offer that service yourself. Weddings can take more than a year to plan. In the process, couples can lose sight of what is arguably supposed to be the most romantic night of your lives . . . your ďŹ rst night as a married couple. We thought we’d share some tips to make sure your wedding night is everything you hope it will be!

128

TO PLAN YOUR ROMANTIC WEDDING NIGHT: Wrap things up at a reasonable time. If you don’t want to be so exhausted that you head to bed and immediately fall asleep, get a full night’s sleep the night before and end your reception at a reasonable time. Remember, you and your spouse can leave a little before everyone else if you want. You’re the guests of honor! Curb the alcohol intake. Many couples want to celebrate their nuptials with champagne and/ or cocktails, and that’s okay. It’s a celebration, after all! But know your limits, and keep the coming wedding night in mind. You want to be clear-headed and alert to focus on your new spouse. Get away from it all. Consider booking a room somewhere away from where your guests are staying. If you stay near everyone else, you run the risk of getting disturbed by well-wishers, or even thinking more about whether your guests are comfortable than about your new spouse. Stay somewhere sumptuous (or at least nicer than usual). It’s your wedding night…of course you should indulge! Even if you can’t afford the honeymoon suite, spring for something nicer than you usually would. It will help to set the mood if you’re feeling like royalty. Have a late-night snack. Many couples get so caught up with making the rounds to thank their guests and dancing the night away that they neglect to eat much of their reception food. Arrange for a light snack of cheese and crackers, chocolate-covered strawberries, or something similar that the two of you can enjoy while you relax and revisit the wedding day together. Exchange gifts. Some couples exchange tokens of affection before the wedding, but it’s also perfectly acceptable to exchange them after the wedding. In fact, we think it’s a lovely way to begin your new life together! Yes, your wedding night is meant to be romantic, but be realistic. It will come at the end of an exciting and exhausting day. Don’t put too much pressure on yourselves to make it “perfect.” Just celebrate your love for each other and prepare for a very happy marriage to come! 129

EN WAYS V E S TO KEEP COOL THROUGH THE

Wedding Planning Process 130

I’ve worked with a lot of couples over the years, and I’ve seen many brides and grooms lose their cool in the course of planning their weddings. It’s an easy thing to do considering it’s going to be one of the most important days of your lives. Take it from me, though…you’ll both be happier on your big day if you make every effort to avoid reaching your breaking point!

HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS ON

How to Make Your Planning AS STRESS-FREE AS POSSIBLE:

1

Give yourself time. The more time you have between your engagement and the wedding day, the more you can pace yourself on the planning. For instance, it’s much less stressful (on you and your budget) to interview and hire vendors over a few months than to try and fit it all into a few weeks.

2

Hire a wedding planner. If your budget permits it, hire a wedding planner. He or she will take the lead in your planning, guiding you throughout the process and serving as your voice of reason in times of stress.

3 4 132

Go on “plan-free” dates. As often as possible, take time with your future spouse to do something you both enjoy. Make that time “plan-free,” and maybe even impose a fun consequence like having to give out a kiss - if they slip up and mention the wedding plans. Keep it simple. I encourage couples to simplify as much as possible as they plan their weddings. Rather than try to book a separate ceremony and reception space, you might consider booking everything in one location. Rather than pay for two different floral setups, repurpose some of your ceremony floral.

5

Nail down your vision. Many brides get bogged down in the details. Using photos for inspiration, put together a scrapbook or Pinterest board with images that inspire you. Share these with your wedding vendors and rely on their expertise to help guide you into bringing that vision to life. Until you decide what you really want, however, it’s hard for your plans to progress…so make your decision and stick to it!

6

Get organized. Make use of planning checklists such as those found on Perfect Wedding Guide, use a spreadsheet (such as Excel or Google docs) to manage your guest list, and set up reminders for yourself when payments are due. The more organized you are, the less stress you’ll have as the big day nears.

7

When it doubt, try it out. If you’re anxious because you’re not sure what your reception centerpieces will look like or whether your hair and makeup stylist can achieve the look you want or if your cake will taste as decadent as promised, ask for a preview. While there might be a charge, you can request a sample centerpiece from the florist, a trial-run of hair and makeup, and a tasting

These are just a few ways to help keep your cool during the planning process. Remember, it’s likely that little things won’t go as planned along the way, but nothing is as important as you and your future spouse finally saying “I Do!”

Wedding favors are a classic wedding tradition, but they’re often something couples don’t think about until near the end of their wedding planning. By that time, the budget can be greatly depleted or nonexistent. What can you do if you want to give your guests something nice as a thank-you without going broke? Below are some fantastic budget-friendly wedding favor ideas. The best part is that guests can keep for as long as they’d like (as opposed to food). Try these out or come up with your own: Luggage Tags. Destination weddings are popular in Florida, and some couples have given their guests personalized luggage tags as favors. There are many options out there, many for less than $1.50 each! Sunglasses. If you’re having an outdoor wedding, sunglasses are a must! Sites like Etsy customize sunglasses with your names and the wedding date, making them great wedding favors. Each pair is less than two dollars. Personalized Lip Balm. Not only is this an inexpensive gift (pricing out at less than 50 cents each on many sites), but it’s practical too. You could place it in a pretty bag with a travel-sized hand lotion and small packs of tissues and make wonderful care packages as your favors! Lottery Tickets. This one may seem odd, but it can actually be a lot of fun for your guests. Place each ticket in a specially-designed holder. Each personalized favor will end up less than three dollars.

135

136

Personalized Tea Bags and Tea Infusers. If you’re having a garden wedding, you can find some absolutely lovely tea-inspired wedding favors such as the ones on Beau-Coup.com. Personalized tea bags placed in each teacup would be a nice touch, as would a personalized tea infuser. Together, they cost less than five dollars. Cookie Cutters. Some brides love the idea of gifting your guests with cookie cutters attached to beautiful recipe cards featuring your favorite cookie recipes. If you’re not into baking, you could just gift cookie cutters personalized with your names and the wedding date. Personalized Mason Jars. Rustic-chic is still popular, and Mason jars cost less than a dollar each. You can create personalized labels in your wedding colors and tie them around the jars, or use etching tools to personalize the jars themselves. For a little extra money, you could even include something in the jars, like the ingredients for grown-up hot cocoa. Donations. If you and your future spouse are more into philanthropy than favors, consider making a donation in your guests’ names to a charity of your choice. Place personalized note cards at each guest’s seat letting them know about the donation. You’d be surprised how many guests appreciate this type of gift! There are also plenty of food-based wedding favors that wouldn’t cost much, but many guests like to keep their favors as keepsakes. While there is no shortage of happiness on a couple’s wedding day, your parents will likely experience some bittersweet feelings. It’s a beautiful celebration, but also an end of an era – it’s not easy “giving away” your daughter or son. Consider these ideas to sneak into your wedding planning to show your mom and groom’s mom some extra love on your wedding day. Make her feel included by tying in her wedding look with yours. We just got married on Mother’s Day weekend, so my husband and I really wanted our moms to feel special on our wedding day. As our color palette included soft pinks with my bridesmaids in blush, we decided it would be fitting for our moms to be in shades of pink as well. I went with both our moms to pick out their dresses, ensuring each had an element that tied into my dress. My mom’s dress had a beaded neckline to match my beaded sash, and my mother-in-law’s dress tied in the lace element of my dress with a beautiful lace overlay. Grooms, customize your mother-son dance song. There are countless blogs and articles naming the most popular mother-son dance songs, but if none of those seem to represent your relationship with your mom, have your band or wedding singer customize lyrics to make them better fit. For example, my husband changed the words to “The Best Day” by Taylor Swift to say: I have an excellent [mother]. [Her] strength is making me stronger. God smiles on my little [sister]. Brides, give her your bouquet instead of tossing it. Rather than having your bouquet ripped apart by a handful of hopeful girls wanting to get their hands on it for good luck, consider presenting your bouquet to your mom. What woman doesn’t like receiving flowers, especially when they’re from your daughter’s most special day? It’s a nod to your mom for all she’s done and a symbol of your appreciation for her. WEDDING

BUDGET

s er t s Bu

Most people know the primary wedding budget “hotspots.” Food and beverage, ceremony and/or reception space fees, floral and décor, photography, videography, etc. I’ve provided wedding budgeting tips in the past, but sometimes things can sneak up on you in the course of planning your wedding, and they can blow your budget out of the water. To read this article in its entirety, visit HeadOverHeelsWeddingBlog.com (search: wedding budget busters)

149

HERE ARE TEN OF THE BIGGEST CULPRITS AND HOW TO AVOID GETTING TAKEN BY SURPRISE:

1 POSTAGE.

It can be hard to know exactly how much the postage for your wedding invitations will cost. Wedding invitations come in many shapes and sizes, and the contents will weigh differently depending on what you include . . . then there’s the postage for the RSVPs. Ask the stationer if they can estimate postage costs before you make your invitation decisions. On average, you’ll want to budget at least $150 to mail about 100 wedding invitations.

ACCESSORIES.

Couples don’t always think about necklaces, earrings, bracelets, belts, tie pins, cufflinks, socks, shoes, or watches when they set their wardrobe budget. To cut down on unexpected expenses, consider borrowing some of these items from friends or family members. It will make for nice sentiment. 150

2

3 BUFFETS.

By nature, a buffet offers guests the option of eating as much food as they want. If they don’t fill up on their first visit to the buffet, they can go back a second or third time, potentially making your food costs skyrocket. To avoid unexpected expenses, ask the catering manager to closely monitor food consumption, and ask if you can cap items once they run out.

WARDROBE ALTERATIONS.

You’ve heard this before, but it bears repeating. Wedding gown alterations aren’t cheap, and many brides and bridesmaids forget to include them in their wardrobe budget. Depending on the style of the gown and how much work needs to be done, brides can easily expect to pay several hundred dollars in alterations.

Brittany & Justin

156

Brittany and Justin married in Lake Como on one of the most beautiful corners of the lake at Villa La Cassinella. 60 guests joined them for a threeday aair. The festivities started with a family style welcome dinner at the intimate Al Veluu overlooking the lake, which featured the Milan symphony orchestra. The wedding day started with guests being picked up by private boat and delivered to the Villa. The head mixologist from the Bvlgari Hotel Milan curated the cocktails for the special day and attendees were welcomed with imported champagne from France and fresh barriers, selected by the bride. The bride was preceded by her 3lb maltipoo and her mother as a string quartet serenaded her down the aisle. Dinner was held in a magical tent featuring endless candles, silk tablecloths and gold-rimmed china and crystal. The bride and groom performed a choreographed tango for their ďŹ rst dance complete with lunges, jumps and dips. After the tango, the live band erupted into dance music and the crowd danced the night away and concluded with ďŹ reworks. 157
