Special Touches: Chris’s proposal to Aubrey took place at a Christmas tree farm, with some surprise guests. “We went to cut down our second Christmas tree together,” she explains. “He got down on one knee and proposed with both of our families and several friends hiding behind trees. He’d also taken the stump of our first Christmas tree together and hollowed it out and made it into a ring box.” The theme for the wedding was “Glitz and Glam.” 9
“I am obsessed with gold! I just wanted something completely different than what everyone else is doing right now. We’ve never been average and I wanted our wedding to reflect that.” The most emotional moment? “There are actually far too many moments, but I’ll never forget the look I got from my soon-to-be-husband when the double doors opened and I walked down the aisle. I’ll also always remember the first look from my dad, along with our first dance.” After a honeymoon at Runaways Bay, Jamaica, comes a time to reflect. “Don’t allow yourself to be stressed. I’ve seen far too many brides overwhelmed with stress and it ruins their perfect day. I didn’t want that for my day at all. It was by far the best day of Chris and my life just like it should be. Also... delegate!!!! Especially when it comes down to the wire... you can’t do it all yourself. That’s why you have a bridal party.” 10

DESTINATION
5 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW! BY SUSAN SOUTHERLAND
Over the years, I’ve worked with many couples planning destination weddings. The idea of jetting away to another city or country and celebrating with only your closest family and friends can be very appealing! There’s a lot to be said about getting married in a location with tons of things to do and sights to see.
20

BEFORE YOU BOOK, THOUGH, THERE ARE FIVE THINGS EVERY COUPLE SHOULD KEEP IN MIND WHEN PLANNING A DESTINATION WEDDING:
BUDGET WISELY. Many couples think of destination weddings as a way to contain wedding costs, but expenses can add up quickly when considering travel, lodging, meals, and entertainment on top of the wedding itself. Be careful to budget for every part of your trip, and don’t forget to focus your attention on the reason for traveling in the first place: your dream wedding! 22
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! When choosing a destination for your wedding, be sure to think about more than just what will look amazing in pictures. How far is the venue from the airport? Will you and your guests be able to stay on property, or will transportation be required to get to the wedding? Is the ceremony space private or open to the public? Is there a limit to the number of guests who can attend? All of these questions should be considered when making a venue decision. 23
MAKE IT LEGAL.
24
Just because your destination officiant pronounces you, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re legally married. Consult with your wedding venue to see what paperwork they file and what you might have to do on your own. Also, check the requirements in your home country to make sure your marriage is properly registered with legal authorities.
THINK OF YOUR GUESTS. Asking guests to travel to a destination wedding often means asking them to invest a great deal of time and money. Consider presenting those you invite with a “total price for them to attend your wedding so they can plan accordingly. Also, provide them options of things they can do while visiting your wedding destination. If they know they can craft a vacation out of it, the cost will be easier to justify. 25
DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF. When you venture away from home for a wedding, you lose osse some control over what happens. Collaborate with a wedding dddinng planner at your destination to make sure everything hinng you envision is accounted for ahead of time. Once Oncee you arrive, try to kick back, relax, and enjoy every moment of your destination weddingg experience. Remember, it’s not about the litt little tlee things…it’s about your new life together!
26
Destination weddings can be fun, intimate, romantic, and memorable for you and your guests. Do some legwork ahead of time to be confident that a particular destination works for you. Then you’ll be ready for a wedding that none of you will ever forget. Do you have a destination wedding story you’d like to share? We’d love to hear from you! 27

When people think of weddings, they generally think of things like colors and themes, or oral designs and music selections. But before any of those choices are made, a wedding budget has to be set. It might not be the most exciting part of wedding planning, but it is by far the most essential. 29
Establishing a budget will help you know whether you can afford a lavish plated dinner reception, or if you’re better off planning an intimate brunch wedding. Not sure where to begin or what to consider? Here are my top budget-planning tips:
1. Prioritize. I developed a worksheet that I use with the couples whose weddings I help plan. The worksheet lists all typical wedding expenses, from stationery and favors to venues. Couples go through the worksheet and prioritize each item, allotting more of their budget to the items that rank the highest. I highly suggest that all couples do this at the onset of wedding planning. 30
2. Whittle down that guest list. The easiest way to keep wedding costs down is to manage the guest count. Food and beverage (F&B) is generally the largest cost for any wedding, so it goes without saying that the less mouths to feed, the more money you’ll have to spend on other services.
3. Be realistic. Often, the couples I work with have little understanding of how much wedding services cost. Do your research. Understand why a bouquet of roses from a professional orist costs more than a cellophane-wrapped arrangement from the local grocery store, or why it’s worth investing in a professional photographer rather than asking Uncle Bill to bring his Nikon.
31
4. Stay on top of things. Budgets change frequently, so it’s important to review them on a regular basis. Using a budget calculator such as the one available on Perfect Wedding Guide can help you keep an eye on each budget line item as your plans progress.
5. Giveth and taketh away.
32
There’s a possibility that you might go over-budget on a line item or two. That’s okay, but be sure to adjust your budget on other line items to account for the overage.
6. Plan for the future, not just the big day. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of bringing your wedding vision to life, but don’t ever forget that this is just the first day of your future as a couple. It isn’t worth going into debt. Stay within your means and start your marriage off on the right foot! 33
Budgeting may not sound like the most fun part of planning your wedding, but taking the time to do so will help reduce your stress and keep you organized. Following these tips will help keep you in good shape leading up to the wedding day and beyond. If you have any other budgeting tips you’d like to share, please leave a comment! 3 REASONS
WHY VENDOR RELATIONSHIPS ARE BENEFICIAL by Kristen Ley
48
Unless you wed at a venue with a list of preferred vendors that you are contracted to use, finding the right vendors to pull off your vision can be tricky. Instead of traveling all over God’s Green Earth to interview countless wedding professionals, seek vendors in networking circles, as their relationships with one another will help make your planning that much easier. Once more, they’ll be happy to refer each other the business and maybe even extend a discount!
So you find a great wedding planner that you absolutely must use. The next step is asking them whom they recommend for the reaming aspects of your event, and here’s why: 1. Planners pick the vendors that best fit their clientele. Often juggling many vendors and coordinating multiple weddings at once, planners rely on their relationships with wedding professionals and trust that they will take care of his or her clients. To secure this mutually beneficial relationship, vendors invest their time and energy to get in with planners and have them serve as a referee by matching them with just the right couple. So know that the same amount of energy will be put into your event. 2. Vendors who have worked together in the past know how to compliment one another with décor and more, as they know each other’s styles. When it comes to making your vision a reality, they can communicate amongst themselves and bounce ideas off each other, rather than making you the middleman. You can be rest assured that the details will be taken care of. 3. Vendors help each other gain exposure and may pull in another wedding professional at no cost just to help them gain a presence. Sometimes, you’ll notice a decorator helping their friend, the florist, at a wedding. The trade off – both parties get to use the pictures to promote their businesses. And, going the extra mile to make the bride happy and hopefully get a positive review is worth their while. On the day of your “I Do,” you don’t want to turn into bridezilla because things aren’t getting done or issues arise. By seeking these vendors, you can relax and enjoy the experience of your wedding day knowing your team of professionals will ensure your vision is seamlessly brought to life.
