6 TIPS for planning a
short Engagement There are a number of reasons that couples might not want to wait to get married. They might have to work around a military deployment, an ailing family member, or a marriage visa requirement, among many other things. If you ďŹ nd yourself in this situation, here are some things you should keep in mind.
26
27
1 2 28
Budget.
No matter your timeline, establishing your budget should always be the first step of planning your wedding. This goes hand-in-hand with creating a guest list, since the more people you invite, the less your budget will stretch.
Marriage license laws.
In some states, you’re required to undergo marriage counseling and/or blood testing before you’ll be issued a license. It’s important that you research your state’s laws ahead of time so that you can meet the requirements before the wedding.
3 4
Venue.
If you’re planning a traditional wedding and have less than two months to plan, invitations need to go out. That means you have to have a wedding date, venue, and ceremony start time chosen as soon as possible. Note that availability might be limited on short notice, especially if you’re getting married during a popular time of year. To combat this, seek out less conventional venues or off-peak days and times for your event.
Go shopping.
You, your future spouse, and anyone you ask to stand up for you at your wedding need to get attire. Due to time constraints, you may have to buy everything off the rack as opposed to custom orders. Fortunately, designer clothing can be found in many ready-to-wear stores, so you should have plenty of options. To read this article in its entirety, visit

Let’s face it:
for most traditional weddings, the bride is the focus. That doesn’t mean that the groom and his attendants shouldn’t look their best, though! So today I thought it would be helpful to offer some wedding attire tips for men. 32
Annie Steele Photography
33
Consider the setting.
You’ll obviously dress differently for a casual outdoor wedding than you will for a formal indoor one. Make sure your attire suits the setting. No matter how casual the event, however, do take care to choose clothing dressier than you’d normally wear. For example, opt for light khaki pants and a white collared shirt if you’re exchanging vows on the beach. This is meant to be one of the most significant days of your life, so dress the part. 34
Rachel Robertson Photography
35
Give it a
personal touch.
There’s no rule saying you can’t add some personality to a wedding suit or tux. Grooms today are infusing their personal touch in their attire through themed socks, special tie pins, or cufflinks in a fun theme, like the Transformers logo or a sports team emblem. Just keep it tasteful, fellas!
Brian Treffeisen Photography
Handle with care.
As Hollywood has demonstrated through movies like The Hangover, much can happen in the span of 24 hours. Be sure your attire (and that of your attendants) is safely stored the night before the wedding to help avoid any wardrobe mishaps. Shawna Hinkel Photography
Dare to be different.
According to GQ, the traditional black suit is starting to get edged out by hipper, trendier looks like khaki, gray, or even white suits. If you consider yourself a trendsetter, don’t shy away from mixing things up with a unique suit style, a quirky bow tie, or a cleverly folded pocket square.

Today I thought I’d share some of the tips I’ve learned from professional wedding hair and makeup artists over the years.”

Do
Decide early what you’d like your hair to look like on the wedding day. If you want a long style, you’ll have to grow your hair out or get extensions. 40
Tonya Beaver Photography
Get a trial run about three months before the wedding. No matter who is doing your hair and makeup on the wedding day, schedule a time to have a trial run. This will make everything go more smoothly because the stylist will already know which colors and products to use. Jessie Felix Photography

42
Wear sunscreen and avoid self-tanning. Especially close to the wedding day, you don’t want to burn your skin or make unsightly tan lines. If you feel you need more pigment in your skin tone, exfoliate and then have an expert apply the color.
Wear as many oil-free makeup products as possible, especially if you’re likely to perspire. You should also carry an oil-blotting sheet for use between pictures.
Pay attention to that beautiful smile. If you’re prone to yellowing, consider using an at-home whitening kit a couple of weeks before the wedding so you’re photo-ready on the big day.

wants their wedding to stand out and reflect their taste and personality, but achieving this can be harder than one might think. Mimicking weddings from magazines or Pinterest doesn’t really make it personal. Ordering favors and decorative items from a site that produces thousands of them each day doesn’t really make it personal, either. If you really want to personalize your wedding ceremony, here’s a mix of eight classic and innovative ways that you can do so. 65
This is a classic way to personalize your wedding ceremony. Nothing your officiant or a website can create will be as personal as what you write yourself.
66

Guests are often looking ahead to the cocktail hour and reception when they arrive, so consider helping to break the ice with a brief pre-ceremony reception. Work with a mixologist to create a drink (alcoholic and/or non) that represents you as a couple, and name the cocktail something that represents the two of you.
69
Are the two of you into acting or watching Broadway shows? Design your program in the form of a playbill from your favorite musical. Are you both fond of Marvel comics? Consider a program designed like a graphic novel where you’re both superheroes. There are plenty of ways to get creative with this ceremony touch.
70

Old South Studios
Many couples have opted for this personal touch over the years. Companies offer fabric or carpeted monogrammed aisle runners, and orists can create monograms with rose petals. For an even more personal touch, you could choose non-traditional aisle dĂŠcor that suits you as a couple, such as lining it with starďŹ sh and sand dollars if you love the beach, or making the aisle look like sheet music with notes leading up the aisle if you both love music.
73
Don’t stress about having to ask a certain number of males versus females to stand up with you. Ask those people who truly mean the most to you to serve in your wedding party. If you happen to have a Man of Honor or a Best Woman, so be it! You might even want to ask someone special to serve as your officiant.

5 Unique Ways to Incorporate Family Tradition in Your Wedding
One of the most time-honored traditions in weddings is the adage, “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue.” Although the popularity of this tradition waned over the past decade, it’s making a resurgence. Weddings are such sentimental events. What better time to incorporate things that hold meaning to you and your family? Here are some of the unique ways some of my couples have infused their weddings with Something Old: 76
un
WEAR PART OF A GOWN WORN BY A BELOVED
FAMILY MEMBER.
OldSouthStudios
Rather than wearing an actual hand-me-down gown, one of my brides had a piece of her grandmother’s gown sewn into the lining of hers. The groom also had a piece of the gown sewn into the lining of his suit vest. They felt it brought them even closer on the wedding day.
77
deux
BROACH BOUQUETS. I loved the broach bouquet created by one of my brides. She sent out an e-mail to every guest prior to the wedding day asking for any broaches she could borrow. Then she carefully arranged them into a stylish, vintage-inspired bouquet. All but one of the pins was returned after the wedding, but the photos of the incredible bouquet will last a lifetime!. trois
CELEBRATING LOVE.
One of my favorite ways to see couples honoring their families is having the DJ ask that couples of a certain age take the dance oor. Sometimes they ask for the couple who has been married the longest, or it may be couples who have been married for more than a certain number of years. It’s a sweet way to recognize true and timeless love, and a very creative way to bring in the “Something Old.”
79
80
quatre
PICTURES. I’ve had couples hang black and white images from their grandparents’ weddings on the ends of the church pews. Other couples have created jewelry with old photos, such as keychains and lockets, to carry with them. Sometimes having that image to look at for inspiration can make the wedding day complete.

DIFFICULT WEDDING GUEST SCENARIOS (AND HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM) by Susan Southerland
82
83
Sometimes weddings bring out the best and the worst in people. I have seen beautiful demonstrations of love and support, and I have witnessed downright nastiness. The best time to deal with potentially unruly guests is before they show up on the wedding day. Here are a few troubles I’ve encountered over the years and some details of how I handled them.
The raunchy relative who wants to divert attention from the wedding couple. Sometimes future mothers-in-law aren’t happy with their child’s choice of spouse. That was evident in one wedding I had a few years ago. The motherin-law decided she was going to wear a white sequin dress, stating she was going to make sure everyone was looking at her rather than the bride. Naturally, the bride was quite upset that she would be competing with her mother-in-law. After repeated pleas to the groom’s mother that went without acknowledgement, we decided to purchase a bridal gown embellished with stunning gold accents. The bride looked breathtaking in it, and on the wedding day the groom’s mom looked foolish for being in all white and she had to listen to what a stylish, bold choice her daughter-in-law made with such a breathtaking gown. 84
Angry exes crashing the party. One bride I worked with had a nasty breakup with a really troubled boyfriend prior to meeting her fiancé. Once the ex found out about the wedding, he repeatedly threatened to crash the wedding and embarrass the bride. Our solution was to host the wedding at a private club that required that guests be on a list to be admitted onto the property. The security guards were able to deal with the angry ex before he could set foot anywhere near the ceremony and reception. Severe food allergies. This may not be as dramatic an example as the two above, but not following the proper food handling would have resulted in a serious reaction including hospitalization or death for one of my bride’s brothers. To make sure he would be safe, we had a meeting with the chef early in the planning process to make sure the proper menu was created. We met with the chef again two weeks prior to the wedding to make sure that he remembered about the food allergy. To read this article in its entirety, visit HeadOverHeelsWeddingBlog.com 85

Today’s couples aren’t afraid to stray from tradition, and they’re coming up with some exciting ways to spice up the buffet line. The most popular trend we’re seeing is the incorporation of various food bars at wedding receptions. There are tons of options that you can do, from cupcakes to candy to chips and dips. Let’s check out a few of our favorites!
87
Sliders. These portable little bites have ballooned in wedding popularity over the past 5-10 years. They can be made of anything from burgers to buffalo chicken to gyro meat. Serve these up with a condiment station, and you’re bound to delight your guests.
International themes. Think Greek by offering a food bar ďŹ lled with different kinds of olives, Greek cheeses and yogurt, and bite-size spanakopita, or a Mexican theme with a taco, salsa, or churro bar, or an Asian theme with stir fry or sushi. This is a great way to bring out your heritage! 88
Breakfast. If you’re having a brunch wedding, choose a favorite breakfast food items and feature it. Think pancakes, waffles, biscuits, omelets, or even bacon.
Milkshakes. Ice cream bars are great, but imagine having a station where guests can create their own handspun milkshakes. Talk about nostalgic, memorable, and delicious!
Carnival fare. Offer up flavored popcorn, different kinds of caramel and candied apples, corn dogs, colorful cotton candy, or some other kind of carnival fare. Guests won’t be able to resist these indulgent favorites. 89
Donuts. From sweet to savory, you can’t go wrong with a donut bar. Stock this bar with filled donuts, traditional ring donuts, donut holes, and a wide variety of dipping sauces for guests to try. This is a food bar that guests will love any time of the day.
Potato bar. Almost everyone enjoys potatoes, and they’re not very expensive. Present guests with whipped potatoes, French fried potatoes, and baked potatoes along with a variety of toppings and let them create their perfect spud.
Fruit and champagne. Consider providing a fresh and vibrant food bar with an assortment of sliced fruit served with champagne. Guests can eat or drink them separately or pair them together. You can even include some creative recipes for them to try. There are no rules when it comes to creating food bars. Consider how the theme suits your wedding and your tastes, and have fun with it! What food bar options would you suggest? 90
Raise Your Glass.
Signature cocktails are a fun way to inject a bit of your personality into your wedding reception. Now, finding the right cocktail is easier than ever. In this e-book, Perfect Wedding Guide national wedding expert, Susan Southerland reveals some of the hottest cocktails served by the country’s leading hotel bars, sommeliers and mixologists. 12 Ids FOR THE PERFECT KIDS’ TABLE by Susan Sutherland
102
CREATING A KIDS’ TABLE WHERE THE YOUNGEST GUESTS CAN HANG OUT AND ENTERTAIN THEMSELVES WILL HELP PREVENT POSSIBLE MELTDOWNS, AND MAKE YOU
LOOK LIKE A HERO.
103
Couples ask me all the time if they should include kids in their wedding. This is a personal decision, so I always suggest they consider what makes the most sense for them and the style they envision with their wedding planning. That said, if you do invite children to your wedding, it’s nice to think about how you can make them feel special. Creating a kids’ table where the youngest guests can hang out and entertain themselves will help prevent possible meltdowns, and make you look like a hero. Here’s how you can put together the perfect kids’ table at your wedding:
104
Id
01
Make the table look awesome. Create a special sign for the kids’ table that says something like, “Where the Cool Kids Are,” or “No Adults Allowed.” Use a whimsical centerpiece and consider offering an alternative form of seating if the space allows it, like benches or bean bag chairs, to really set the table apart.
NO ADULTS ALLOWED
105
Idďż˝
02 106
Present every kid with the same things. We all know that when it comes to sharing, children aren’t always the best at it. Help avoid possible tantrums by making sure every child is treated the same.
Id
03
Give them crayons. I recommend giving each child a pack of their own crayons so they don’t end up fighting over the same color. Admit it: even adults love to color…so hook the kids’ table up!
107
Id
04
108
Cover the table with paper. What fun are crayons if you can’t use them? Don’t frustrate the kids by giving them crayons at a table covered in a nice tablecloth. Use white or brown craft paper to give them something to decorate.
Id
05
Offer snacks they’ll enjoy. Check with your venue first on this one. If it’s approved (or you can order them through the venue), provide kidfriendly snacks like Goldfish Crackers, chocolatecovered raisins, cheese popcorn, pretzels, or graham crackers.
109
Id
06 110
Play-Doh. (‘Nuf said.)
Idďż˝
07
Make them photography helpers. Disposable cameras are inexpensive, so give one to each kid and encourage them to get creative behind the lens. You might be really impressed by what pics you ďŹ nd after the photos are developed!
111
Idďż˝
08 112
Keep them busy with activity books and/or crafts. Kids get bored easily, so make sure they have plenty to do by giving them activity books and/or crafts they can do at their table. Just make sure you don’t choose anything too complicated or messy!
Idďż˝
09
Host a Scavenger Hunt. Create a Scavenger Hunt that only the kids can participate in (I recommend that it begin after the meal is served). Ask that the older kids assist the younger ones, and offer the winner(s) a prize.
113
Idďż˝
10 114
Put a bowl of Legos on the table. This can entertain some kids for the entire event!
Id
11
Provide an alternative for their dress shoes. Kids get blisters, too, so provide them with flip flops, ballet-style slippers, or colorful no-skid socks to slip on during the reception. 115
Idďż˝
12 116
Have games on the table. Bring a selection of games, jigsaw puzzles, and playing cards for the kids to use. Opt for games where a number of kids can play at a variety of ages, and avoid games that make noise.
As long as you make your
st gu
feel welcome and give them something to occupy their time, you’ll have a win on your hands! We welcome your ideas for the perfect kids’ table, so please share your thoughts with us.

If you’re planning a destination wedding, one of the most important tasks is securing accommodations and travel recommendations for your wedding party and guests. This can either be a logistical headache – or a breeze if you choose to work with a destination wedding and honeymoon specialist like Kriss Kintner of Paradise Weddings and Travel. Planning travel and accommodations is a daunting task because it’s subjective. It all depends on what is going on in the market. Tuesday through Thursday or Saturday flights are typically cheaper because they are less traveled. But you can’t guarantee that to be true if fuel prices drop, for example, because airfare can then rise.
120
Kriss compiled the below tips to share with brides looking to make coming to their destination wedding easier and more cost-effective for guests: Use a travel agent. Most agents are paid by the companies they use, so their services are actually free for brides. Travel agents can help your guests save money by securing group rates at hotels and resorts. You also receive piece of mind knowing that you have someone on your side both before and during any travel should you need any assistance.
I
121
Book flights as soon as you can. Flights booked more than two weeks out are almost always cheaper than those booked the week of. There can be last minute deals on flights, but don’t bank on it! If you hold out for a deal that doesn’t come, you will end up paying double what you expected. Once you have found your flight, check back often as airlines can change prices multiple times in one day. Another thing to keep in mind is to clear your cache/cookies when looking online for flights. Websites have been known to actually show higher prices for frequently searched flights. This can be quite a task, but your trusted travel agent can help you!
II
122
Flexibility can save you money. If your dates are flexible, historically the cheapest day to fly is Tuesday (domestic flights) and the most expensive is either Friday or Sunday. Flying from Tuesday to Tuesday will get you a much better rate than Monday to Friday or Saturday. Holidays will always be higher because there is simply more demand with a lot more people traveling.

FOUR
OVERLOOKED WEDDING FEES THAT MIGHT CAUSE
OVERSPENDING
Here at Perfect Wedding Guide, we often talk about creating a wedding budget and sticking to it. And now, we want to share with you some hidden pitfalls you should avoid if you want to stick to your budget. These are expenses that you might not be aware of, but you need to consider when planning how you’re going to spend your money. 126
Gown Alterations. It’s very rare to find a wedding gown that fits you perfectly. You will likely at least need to have the length reduced. You may also need the gown taken in around the bust or waist, have a bustle made, and possibly have cups installed so you don’t have to wear a bra. These alterations can add up. Before you order your gown, get an estimate from the salon on what your alteration fees might be and account for those fees in your budget. Bartender fees and cake-cutting fees. Not all caterers and reception sites charge for bartenders or for cutting and serving your cake, but you don’t want to be caught unaware if they do. The time to understand and negotiate these fees is when you are signing your contract. If you are hosting an open bar, don’t be afraid to ask for your site to waive your bartender fee if your guests consume a certain dollar amount. If you are bringing your wedding cake in from a pastry shop and you’d like to avoid a cake-cutting fee, ask if you can order a dessert course to make up for the loss in cake revenue.

With Pinterest growing steadily in popularity, hosts of bridal showers are getting really creative with their theme ideas. From the bride’s favorite musical to her favorite type of candy, inspiration for themes is in no short supply. Here are some of our recent favorites: Throwback Themes. We love the idea of a shower theme based on the decade of the bride’s birth. Got a 90’s bride? Give out scrunchies as party favors and offer guests bean bag chairs. An 80’s bride? Decorate with bright, vibrant (neon-like) colors and load up the iPod with one-hit wonders. A 70’s bride? Bring out the disco ball and bellbottom pants. And let’s not forget our flower child theme for 60’s brides! Opulent Elegance. A la Breakfast at Tiffany’s, hosts are going classic and romantic. From flowy script on the invites to favors brushed with gold, this theme will leave guests breathless! You can even ask guests to dress in their finest for an extra special touch. Garden Party. Simple and sweet, the garden party is a classic shower theme that will never go out of style. Use a fresh spring color palette, soft floral accents, and an assortment of food and beverages such as petit fours, frosted cookies, and pink lemonade to bring this theme together. These are just a few of our favorites. The options are really endless! For more tips, visit HeadOverHeelsWeddingBlog.com

TO BACHELOR AND BACHELORETTE PARTIES
138
Weddings come with many traditions, not the least of which is the famed bachelor and/or bachelorette party. Most of us think of drunken revelry and questionable “clothing optional” activities during these events, but I’ve found that not all couples are comfortable with this. After all, some of the things that happen at these parties can come back to haunt you!
I thought it would be fun to come up with a list of alternatives to Ye Olde Bachelor/Bachelorette Party. Here are a few ideas: Host a party. Some countries have a tradition called the Stag and Doe Party (also called the Hen and Stag Party, Jack and Jill Party, etc.). At these events, guests celebrate the couple’s forthcoming marriage and give them money to use towards their wedding and future life together. Attend an event that has meaning to you. Do you love a particular sports team? Rent a limo and attend one of their games with some of your closest friends. Did you meet at a bar? Take some friends along on a haunted pub crawl. Are you both Christmas fanatics? Go and see the Nutcracker Suite. Take a road trip. Imagine how nice it would be to escape before the wedding to a romantic bed and breakfast. Enjoy some quiet time together without discussing wedding plans. You might be surprised how much it reenergizes you! Enjoy a few laughs. Consider a group outing to the local comedy club. Nothing like a night of laughter to help ease any wedding stress, right? Along the same lines are dueling piano bars and karaoke bars, both fun places to celebrate. Take a class. Just because you’re planning a wedding doesn’t mean you can’t learn something fun and new. Consider taking a dance class, learning how to mix cocktails from a mixologist, or maybe take a painting or pottery class that will allow the two of you to make a special memento together. There are many ways to celebrate your last moments as singles… even if you celebrate together! If you have some other ideas of great bachelor or bachelorette alternatives, please send me an email to susan.southerland@pwg.com and we might include your ideas on our wedding planning blog, Head Over Heels! 139
THE
GROOM’S GUIDE TO BEING THE
HOST with the MOST
The most memorable weddings are the ones where the bride and groom are engaged with one another and with their guests. There is no doubt that it can be hard work smiling all day and night, posing for photos, dancing, and chatting up 150 of your closest friends and family, but if you follow these tips, your guests will marvel at what an amazing groom you are.
140
Before the wedding, review your guest list and become familiar with who’s attending. This will help you remember to whom you are being introduced on the wedding day. Don’t consume too much alcohol. I don’t want to be a party pooper, but if you’re hung over from the rehearsal dinner or sloppy drunk during the wedding reception, your photos will be terrible and it will be much harder for you to make small talk with your guests. Party as hard as you’d like at the bachelor party and on your honeymoon, but be conservative at your wedding.

Prior to the ceremony, mingle with guests as they arrive. Talking with your friends and family will also help relieve pre-wedding jitters. Write your bride a note and have it delivered to the room where she is getting ready. Tell her how much you love her and how excited you are to start spending your life together as husband and wife. 142
Put out fires. Your bride likely did the bulk of the planning up to the big day. If you see something that might upset her, do your best to step in and fix it, even if that means asking for help from your groomsmen or family members. Give a welcome speech. Thank your guests for coming, thank your new in-laws for throwing such an amazing party (if applicable), and toast your beautiful bride. You will make your family proud. Go table to table with your bride and visit your guests. It’s tempting to hang with your buddies at the bar, but it’s proper etiquette to personally speak with each of your guests. Stay on the dance floor as much as you can. Dance with your new wife, with your mom, your sister and your aunt. Help make shy guests feel a part of the festivities by asking them to join you on the dance floor. Don’t leave your bride alone. Make sure when you are on the dance floor she has a dancing partner as well. Take time to have intimate conversations with her and hold her hand as often as possible. Being a great host doesn’t end with the wedding day. Make sure you help your bride write thank you notes after the honeymoon. If you follow these tips, you’re bound to wow your guests as well as your bride. Then you can head off to enjoy your honeymoon! Have you ever eaten so much at dinner that you didn’t have room for dessert? As strange as it sounds, this analogy often applies to weddings and honeymoons. Couples can get so caught up in the planning of their wedding that they neglect planning their honeymoon. This may lead to problems, especially if all of the money budgeted for the wedding is used on the ceremony and reception. For some couples, postponing the honeymoon is the only option. 154
Here are some reasons why:
Budget. As mentioned above, lack of money is the number one reason couples postpone their honeymoons. No Leave. Some couples can’t take a honeymoon because they don’t have the time to take off of work or school. Interest. This may come as a surprise, but some couples are simply too exhausted by the entire planning process to even think about planning their honeymoon. Timing. Some couples want to visit a location that isn’t ideal to visit during the timing of their wedding, such as a Caribbean destination in the heart of hurricane season. In this case, they may postpone until the timing is better. They’re already there. Couples who have a destination wedding often include the honeymoon in their wedding budget because they’re already away from home in a honeymoon setting. When it comes to deciding whether or not to postpone your wedding, be sure to weigh the pros and cons as they apply to your situation. You don’t want to go into debt because you feel you have to go on your honeymoon right after the wedding, and you
might not want to make sacrifices if you choose to honeymoon on a tight budget. Whatever you decide, enjoy those early days together as husband and wife as much as you can. Sometimes, just living in the moment is honeymoon enough!

To help simplify things, let’s place wedding services into two basic categories: trendy or traditional. Trendy weddings feature all of the hottest themes from today’s wedding industry, whereas traditional weddings follow standards set over generations. Trendy weddings will get your guests talking and make a memorable impression, whereas traditional weddings are timeless events that pay homage to our heritage and age well in photos and video. So…which type of wedding should you have?
Trendy or Traditional
• You enjoy living in the “now.” • You consider yourself a no conformist. • You love keeping up with the hottest trends in all areas of your life. • You want your wedding to stand out from all the rest. • Time-honored traditions play an important role in your life. • It’s a part of your religion and/or culture. • You don’t want to “date” your wedding with the trends from only this point in time. • You’re concerned about what your family and guests will think if you stray from tradition.
If you don’t fall clearly within one of these categories, you can always blend the two. You’ll likely find that your tastes stray closer to one than the other as you make your decisions. In the end, what will matter is that you went with what you love most!
