Get Creative with Your Wedding Favs

While it can be easy to decide on the flowers, the colors and the cake flavor, one aspect of wedding planning that can sometimes be overlooked is wedding favors and there are plenty of creative ideas that can suit your needs.

Outdo ideas

If you’re planning on having an outdoor ceremony and reception in spring or summer, a great idea for a charming and unique favor is to create adorable bird feeders for guests to take home.

Shake it up f evening affairs

Those planning a more formal, black tie wedding might need something a bit more chic to impress their guests. While gorgeous champagne glasses or even an engraved picture frame might do the trick, opting for a more usable favor could be even more stylish.

Other favs to consider

Even though these ideas might have gotten your creative juices flowing, there are plenty of other favors out there that are just as unique. One great option is to create custom Cootie Catchers and have the questions inside relate to you and your fiance. This type of favor is not only fun, but could help guests break the ice at their tables and test their knowledge on how well they know you. EN WAYS V E S TO KEEP COOL THROUGH THE

Wedding Planning Process 34

I’ve worked with a lot of couples over the years, and I’ve seen many brides and grooms lose their cool in the course of planning their weddings. It’s an easy thing to do considering it’s going to be one of the most important days of your lives. Take it from me, though…you’ll both be happier on your big day if you make every effort to avoid reaching your breaking point!

For more tips, visit www.HeadOverHeelsWeddingBlog.com

35

HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS ON

How to Make Your Planning AS STRESS-FREE AS POSSIBLE:

1

Give yourself time. The more time you have between your engagement and the wedding day, the more you can pace yourself on the planning. For instance, it’s much less stressful (on you and your budget) to interview and hire vendors over a few months than to try and fit it all into a few weeks.

2

Hire a wedding planner. If your budget permits it, hire a wedding planner. He or she will take the lead in your planning, guiding you throughout the process and serving as your voice of reason in times of stress.

3 4 36

Go on “plan-free” dates. As often as possible, take time with your future spouse to do something you both enjoy. Make that time “plan-free,” and maybe even impose a fun consequence like having to give out a kiss - if they slip up and mention the wedding plans. Keep it simple. I encourage couples to simplify as much as possible as they plan their weddings. Rather than try to book a separate ceremony and reception space, you might consider booking everything in one location. Rather than pay for two different floral setups, repurpose some of your ceremony floral.

5

Nail down your vision. Many brides get bogged down in the details. Using photos for inspiration, put together a scrapbook or Pinterest board with images that inspire you. Share these with your wedding vendors and rely on their expertise to help guide you into bringing that vision to life. Until you decide what you really want, however, it’s hard for your plans to progress…so make your decision and stick to it!

6

Get organized. Make use of planning checklists such as those found on Perfect Wedding Guide, use a spreadsheet (such as Excel or Google docs) to manage your guest list, and set up reminders for yourself when payments are due. The more organized you are, the less stress you’ll have as the big day nears.

7

When it doubt, try it out. If you’re anxious because you’re not sure what your reception centerpieces will look like or whether your hair and makeup stylist can achieve the look you want or if your cake will taste as decadent as promised, ask for a preview. While there might be a charge, you can request a sample centerpiece from the florist, a trial-run of hair and makeup, and a tasting

These are just a few ways to help keep your cool during the planning process. Remember, it’s likely that little things won’t go as planned along the way, but nothing is as important as you and your future spouse finally saying “I Do!”

WEDDING

BUDGET

s er t s Bu

Most people know the primary wedding budget “hotspots.” Food and beverage, ceremony and/or reception space fees, floral and décor, photography, videography, etc. I’ve provided wedding budgeting tips in the past, but sometimes things can sneak up on you in the course of planning your wedding, and they can blow your budget out of the water. To read this article in its entirety, visit HeadOverHeelsWeddingBlog.com (search: wedding budget busters)

55

HERE ARE TEN OF THE BIGGEST CULPRITS AND HOW TO AVOID GETTING TAKEN BY SURPRISE:

1 POSTAGE.

It can be hard to know exactly how much the postage for your wedding invitations will cost. Wedding invitations come in many shapes and sizes, and the contents will weigh differently depending on what you include . . . then there’s the postage for the RSVPs. Ask the stationer if they can estimate postage costs before you make your invitation decisions. On average, you’ll want to budget at least $150 to mail about 100 wedding invitations.

ACCESSORIES.

Couples don’t always think about necklaces, earrings, bracelets, belts, tie pins, cufflinks, socks, shoes, or watches when they set their wardrobe budget. To cut down on unexpected expenses, consider borrowing some of these items from friends or family members. It will make for nice sentiment. 56

2

3 BUFFETS.

By nature, a buffet offers guests the option of eating as much food as they want. If they don’t fill up on their first visit to the buffet, they can go back a second or third time, potentially making your food costs skyrocket. To avoid unexpected expenses, ask the catering manager to closely monitor food consumption, and ask if you can cap items once they run out.

WARDROBE ALTERATIONS.

You’ve heard this before, but it bears repeating. Wedding gown alterations aren’t cheap, and many brides and bridesmaids forget to include them in their wardrobe budget. Depending on the style of the gown and how much work needs to be done, brides can easily expect to pay several hundred dollars in alterations.

Rachel & Paul

68

The photographer described it best by saying this event was a glamorous barn wedding. From the gold accents to the twinkle lights, Rachel and Paul’s wedding had every ounce of glam mixed in the rustic backdrop. The Attire: The bridesmaids were dressed in beautiful pale pink chiffon gowns, while the groomsmen all looked dapper in suits from Men’s Wearhouse. As an added touch, the bride attached her grandmother’s brooch to her bridal bouquet. The Scene: Rachel and Paul exchanged vows in front of several family and friends on that June 26th afternoon. As the ceremony drew to an end, the Oklahoma skies delivered one incredible sunset before the couple and their guests entered the reception space.

choose to tie the knot away from home and the trend is only growing. Although planning a wedding from afar may seem like a headache, we’re here to tell you that may not always be the case!

73

While all venues are beautiful, there’s nothing like having your wedding pictures taken in a unique locale. Somewhere that sparks conversation above and beyond “hey I’ve been to a million weddings there!

74

Your mom wants to invite your great-aunt twice removed and your in-laws are insisting that you invite a step-cousin’s wife’s sister. Before you reach for that second glass of wine, take a second and consider the ease of planning a destination wedding and the smaller guest list that comes with it.

75

At some point in the planning process, every bride wakes up in a cold sweat from a nightmare about bridesmaid dresses. Will everyone like them? Does the color match the napkins? Will they truly get to wear them again? Destination weddings typically mean a smaller wedding party, which means fewer decisions (or nightmares!) for you in the fashion department.

You’re already there! Quite literally, your honeymoon will start the second you step away from your reception. Spend your wedding night walking on the beach or taking in some nightlife - there’s no need to stress about transportation back to the hotel and preparing for your impending honeymoon trip. Let’s also not forget that many wedding destinations have great deals on wedding and honeymoon packages!

76

Whether trying the knot in Italy, Hawaii or Mexico, you will always have a special place to retreat to for anniversaries, vow renewals, or just a romantic vacation together.

A destination wedding may not be for every couple, but there are a lot of pros to consider when making the decision. Learn more by visiting http://bit.ly/1YXGL8P 77

Signature drinks are a fun and easy way to give your wedding a dash of individuality. As this option tends to be more budget friendly than others, more and more couples are now opting to skip the full bar altogether and instead showcase his or hers signature cocktails.

These are Something New for I Do’s top reasons to love signature drinks: Signature drinks help tie in your theme and add a trendy flare.

If your wedding is focused on a color palette rather than a theme, a great way to bring your palette full circle is selecting drinks by color, using glassware or garnishes that compliment your color choices. If you are having a brunch time wedding, consider having a bacon infused Bloody Mary served in a seasoned rimmed mason jar.

Choosing a signature drink over a full bar can help you save tremendously.

A well thought out bar with one or two signature drink options is a lot more cost effective than a fully stocked bar. Aside from the cost of liquor liability insurance and whatever fees your venue requires for bar service or BYOB packages, costs can quickly add up. When you opt for one or several cocktails, you’ll notice that you budget goes much further.

Your guests will love trying something new.

Do you have a signature sangria recipe? Or is there a new cocktail you and your fiancé have started making? You guests will love the opportunity to try new drinks without going out and purchasing them. You can even have non-alcoholic varieties for the youngsters. It is important to make your wedding as unique as you are, and the signature drink is one of the best ways to do it. Now it’s time to get creative! If you have any trouble, visit http://bit.ly/1KRXjYq for more recipes and inspiration.

With the ever growing popularity of Instagram, it is no surprise that many couples are creating hashtags for their wedding guests to use on the big day. Doing so allows the attendees to not just watch, but be a part of your wedding. But the real question is, how do you create a wedding hashtag? One that everyone will be able to type in - whether tipsy or not - and one that has not been used before. Simple. Follow these quick tips: 100

USE YOUR NAMES. Sure there may be several Jim and Johns out there, but using your name is just the first part of the equation. THROW IN A WEDDING WORD. It’s obviously your wedding day, so why not use a word that identifies it. Words like: Hitch, Wed, Tie the Knot, I Do, Wedding, etc. ALLITERATIONS ARE FUN. And simple to remember. Use something like #HarrisonsGetHitched or #WildWilsonWedding. SPRUCE IT UP WITH A RHYME. Consider your names and if they rhyme with any wedding related words. Is your new last name going to be Stewart? Shorten it a bit and go with #StewPartyof2. WE LOVE TO BE PUNNY. Think about using an idiom or a common phrase in your hashtag. You can switch out a specific word with your name to get the punny in there. KEEP IT SWEET. Sure you could use something like #StephanieMarriesDanielCrowder as your hashtag, but it’s better to keep your hashtag short and sweet. Doing so will eliminate any guests from making any grammatical errors when entering it in. This doesn’t mean you can’t use your names. But consider using #StephWedsDan16 instead. GO TO THE SOURCE. Once you’ve come up with the perfect hashtag, log in to Instagram and check it out. This will confirm that your creative genius is all yours! SPREAD THE WORD. One thing to keep in mind once you’ve selected your perfect wedding hashtag, is to make it known to your guests. Add it to your wedding invitations, on your wedding website and place signs around your venues.

If it gets down to the wire and nothing has popped into your head, you can visit http://bit.ly/1LpA7UW for quick and easy help.
