GM’S MESSAGE Dear Members,

GM Andrew Johnston

After more than a year of lockdowns, it has been heartening to see so many of you so dedicated to golf and, more importantly, Sentosa Golf Club. We are pleased and excited to see each and every one of you and we can all sympathize with the fact that the unexpected desire to play golf during this period has resulted in unforeseen challenges, as we work to meet the demands and handle record-breaking levels of rounds played day in and day out. As you attempt to book your golf game and come to the Club, the last thing you want is to experience a long waiting time out on the golf course or for your F&B back at the Clubhouse. We know you expect more. The current challenges in booking games are expected to be temporary. We will continue to use the ballot/draw system until restrictions become more relaxed. We also know that good pace of play matters to your enjoyment, and we will pay special attention to marshaling to keep all groups moving out on the golf courses. The team at Sentosa Golf Club is here to serve you and is taking significant actions to alleviate any distress and anxiety you might have. We recognize the reason you come to play golf with us is to enjoy yourself and escape. Whether that revolves around the rivalry of beating the golf course, competing with your flight mates, or just having an enjoyable walk and talk around the golf course, taking in the wonderful views and balance we have developed with nature. We know that to provide a world class experience, great conditioning delivered by our hard working and dedicated Golf Agronomy team, as well as the rest of the men and women at SGC is critical. One of our self-made inspirational tools is a quote on the back wall of the Golf Maintenance facility. This was added about eight years ago to help the SGC team identify and illustrate that, to be legendary, we must commit to excellence. We encourage the team to pass by this quote on the way out to the golf courses every day. This quote helps the team identify the commitment required daily, it does not ask why or when, and even how much? The commitment must be an unconditional hidden spirit to win at all costs. “Champions come and go, but to be legendary you got to have heart, more heart than the next man, more than anyone in the world” - Muhammad Ali. We are devoted to you our Members and Guests, and we recognize it is all about you. We want you to say to yourself as you leave Sentosa Island, ‘Wow, that was worth it!’, and go home with great memories that last a lifetime. This is why year in and year out the Sentosa Golf Club team rolls up its sleeves in every aspect of the business to find success. Success is not always measured only by revenue. To strive for perfection, to drive world class golf course conditioning and hospitality, to make our Members and Guests smile with pride is the measure of success we are looking to achieve. This is why as we bring our Food & Beverage programme and offerings back online from the most recent temporary closure, we have been working hard behind the scenes on new menus and combinations to improve your pre- and post-game experiences. If you want to be treated to one of the best bespoke dining experiences in Singapore, we invite you to make a reservation for a private dinner with Chef KK and I am certain you will leave saying to your guests, ‘I bet you didn’t know Sentosa Golf Club has such a world class culinary team.’ Excellence is not a given, it is a commitment. And the commitment to excellence must be a daily pursuit. Excellence is something we are chasing at Sentosa Golf Club. I hope we never catch it because, as long as we are chasing it, you have our word we will continue to go further, dig deeper and try every innovation, to achieve our goal of producing better course conditions and excellent hospitality all year round. As we begin to move from pandemic to endemic, we are committed to serving at the pleasure of our Members and Guests and to make sure that the experience you receive is beyond the best it can be. Sincerely Andrew Johnston General Manager & Director of Agronomy

LONG SERVICE AWARDS PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE As the Club continues to push boundaries, innovate and become more progressive each and every year it is only fitting that, during the 25th year since the Clubhouse opened, I take a moment to congratulate a number of our staff who have been recognised for reaching significant milestones in their tenure at the Club. Ranging from five to 35 years, every single one of these staff members has shown tremendous dedication to the Club, as well as an unparalleled commitment to making sure our Members and Guests are provided with the best possible experience. MEMBER NEWS THANK YOU As many of you will know, Jackie Chen is currently off work undergoing chemotherapy treatment, but he would like to pass on a message of thanks to everyone who has contributed so generously in recent weeks, and he says that he hopes to be back here in the near future. ‘Thank you for your concern,” says Jackie. “I believe I will overcome this. I am now feeling a bit better, although I still have some side effects. I try to do home exercises.” On behalf of everyone at the Club, our best wishes and we can’t wait to see you again. NOTICE ON DANGEROUS PLAY We regret to advise that on 1 April, there was an incident of dangerous play involving a guest of a member. It happened on The Tanjong’s 6th hole and was followed by an incident where another guest of the same member drove his golf cart against the cart of the players in the other group. Based on the findings of the Disciplinary Committee inquiry, the General Committee has decided to impose a suspension of three months for the Club member, pursuant to Club Rule 23.8.

DANGEROUS PLAY PROCEDURE With both courses seeing 100% occupancy since the end of the Circuit Breaker in Singapore, and with more people out playing, we’d like to take this opportunity to remind members and guests of what to do when there’s an incident of dangerous play, which is classed as follows: •

Dangerous play (when someone intentionally takes aim at you)

Inconsiderate play (not paying attention to where you are)

Playing an errant shot (ball spilling over to the next fairway)

Firstly, if an injury is sustained, please call the golf reception or marshal (6275 0022 or 6373 7128) for immediate assistance. We respectfully ask golfers to pause and inform the other party of what has happened in a calm manner, and to call the golf reception or marshal if the issue cannot be amicably resolved. Please do not hold up the game or take matters into your own hands. You should make a report at the end of your round and allow the Club’s due investigations and process to follow. As well as dangerous play, marshals can also monitor slow play. They are tasked to understand the nature of the complaint, monitor the flights and make a report of the matter. Our marshals reserve the right to remove golfers from the golf course if necessary. Thank you in advance for your co-operation.

his is such an exciting time for me as I'm currently preparing for the First Stage of the Korn Ferry Q-School at Orange County National GC from 21-24 September. There is a First and Second Stage at various sites across the country which all lead to the Final Stage. The players who advance to the Final Stage are assured a Korn Ferry Tour card for next season. I've never played in Florida before, so I arrived early to get some practice in. I've been working really hard on my putting and fitness recently and I'll also be seeing a sports psychologist and having some short-game lessons before we get going. It's been really useful to come out early and get acclimatised to the course and conditions, as well as the weather, as obviously it's so different to Sentosa. I will also need to consider adjusting my mindset a little as

my last overseas tournament was at the Malaysian Open in March 2020, so it's been quite a while not leaving the country and playing outside of Singapore.

None of this would be possible without the help of my sponsors and Sentosa for giving me the opportunity to practise and play

Making it to the Korn Ferry Tour would be such a big dream come true though I'll be keeping my expectations in check. There are a lot of good players trying to make it that you'll need to put together some low scores but, whatever

www.sentosagolf.com

happens, it will be a great learning experience for my career. Everything in golf is a learning curve and, if we can focus on the process more and not the outcome, then we should be able to play golf more freely and score better. None of this would be possible without the help of my sponsors and Sentosa for giving me this opportunity to practise and play. Both The Serapong and Tanjong are in great condition every day and the former really trains your shotmaking and concentration as every hole has a unique challenge to it. Also, the committee, members and staff have always been extremely helpful and supportive and it's such a great environment to work on your game. There are so many junior golfers taking up the game and getting to work with them at the junior clinics during the SMBC Singapore Open has been very special and it's great for me and the other pros to be able to give something back to the game.

F&B NEWS WITH CHEF KK

CHEF KK

on his early career, eating healthy and his charity work You hear a lot of chefs who were inspired to cook by a parent or grandparent. To be honest I was an N Levels student who dropped out of school in 1991 and the only skilled job where I might be able to earn a basic living (and never go hungry) was to become a cook.

of us is not as smart as all of you'. One of a chef's basic skills is to understand the different health benefits of ingredients and with more health-conscious customers; there will be more requirements on special diets. New chefs will need to know and plan their dishes, incorporating the latest trends and ingredients while providing a consistent standard and flavours. For example, members can look forward to our new Golfers’ Terrace menu which will have a section on plant-based vegan and sustainable produce.

My goal was to 'earn a living and live a simple life' but, being a drop out, I was determined to work hard to catch up with my peers and that began back in 1992. I enrolled in Shatec and I started my internship the following year before starting my apprenticeship at Raffles Hotel where I ended up in their fine-dining restaurant.

Another powerful saying I keep to is 'No-one has ever become poor by giving' and, in June 2018, we began our yearly Tour of Humanity with 60 chefs from around the world and contributed towards charities starting from Myanmar and across Asia including Singapore. We also donated 1,000 Euros each and it has helped me to realise how important it is to give back to societies. A lot of people are struggling in life and, while I am unable to give them happiness every day, the least I can do is to make them smile. Likewise, we will run a few Chefs' Social Responsibility charity giveaways later this year which will hopefully give something back to the society and spread some comfort and happiness during this time.

Years later, in 2018, I became aware of a vacancy for the Executive Chef at Sentosa Golf Club and I was recommended by one of our Committee members, Chef Otto Weibel. At the time I was the Executive Chef of One Farrer Hotel & Spa and, after the interview and food-tasting session, I was offered this golden opportunity to be part of one of the world's top golf clubs. My advice to any up-and-coming chef would be to be committed and passionate about the work that you do and to stay humble as you grow and to still be a great team player. A great saying goes 'None 10

ASIA MAJOR How the game has evolved in the past two decades with Asia’s golfers now being front and centre in the game

N

ext year we will celebrate the 150th staging of the Open at St Andrews but we have to go back to the Championship’s centenary for Asia’s highest finisher. In 1971 Taiwan’s Lu Liang-Huan pushed Lee Trevino, fresh from his play-off win over Jack Nicklaus in the US Open, all the way as we very nearly had our first Asian born Major Champion. Six years later Japan’s Chako Higuchi managed it at the women’s LPGA Championship. Better known as Mr Lu, the Taiwanese star threatened all week and came to the 72nd hole just one shot adrift of Trevino. From an awkward lie he struck a spectator on the head, sending Lillian Tipping to the floor, before somehow, with Tipping’s encouraging words, making a closing birdie. Unfortunately for Lu, who quickly became famous thanks to his kindly manner and pork-pie hat, that was matched

12

@sentosagolfclub

by Trevino and Lu had to settle for second place ahead of Tony Jacklin. The following week he would win the French Open and, shortly after, he would treat Tipping and her husband to an all-expenses paid holiday to his home country. The women’s Majors were, generally speaking, a procession of American winners before a certain Swede began to dominate but the 1998 LPGA Championship would signal a seismic shift in the women’s game. At the DuPont Country Club, South Korean Se Ri Pak led wire-to-wire for the first of five Majors, her second would follow less than two months later at the US Women’s Open. Still only 20 and an LPGA rookie Pak, who had only taken up the game six years before, would open the doors to a more global game – we have now had an incredible 34 Major wins by South Koreans and 12 other Asian champions. @sentosagolfclub

SENTOSA GOLF CLUB MAGAZINE

“Watching someone who looked like me win the US Open, it was like, ‘Wow! This is something I really want to do!’” said Wie West, whose parents are of Korean descent. “That’s why representation matters so much. Being able to see someone who looks like you on TV is super important. Se Ri Pak inspired a whole generation.” Another ground-breaking Major move came in 2009 when YE Yang did what no other player had done and overcame a Tiger Woods Major lead. Woods led from day one, but come the end of the week at Hazeltine, Yang would shoot a 70 to the American’s 75 and win by three. Following second places by Mr Lu, Isao Aoki in the 1980 US Open and TC Chen in the 1985 US Open, Yang had gone one better and, for his next 24 Majors, Woods would fail to add to his Major haul. In Yang’s post-victory press conference he would also cite Pak’s breakthrough as being a watershed

moment in the game. “If you look back with Asian golf, with the women's golf where Se Ri Pak won the US Open, that really created a huge boom in Korea golf-wise where everybody started picking up clubs instead of tennis racquets and baseball bats, and with KJ Choi winning his first tournament in the oh-so-tough PGA tour, that also increased the popularity of golf. I hope this win would be if not as significant, something quite parallel to an impact both to golf in Korea as well as golf in Asia so that all the young golfers, Korean and Asian, would probably build their dreams and expand their horizons a bit with this win.” Fast forward 12 years to 2021 and we now have a male Japanese Major winner in Hideki Matsuyama as the 29-year-old put aside all those top 10s and took the Masters by the scruff of its neck with a third-round 65. The winning margin was eventually one but it was more comfortable than that suggested – Matsuyama was as assured as his caddy was charming and the two of them left Augusta National as hugely popular winners. In the ladies’ game we’ve seen another procession of Asian winners on the LPGA Tour, and they are seemingly getting younger with every year – Inbee Park (33) might have said goodbye to her twenties but

While Pak’s victories have certainly inspired the South Korean juggernaut of champions, her efforts have been felt far wider. Michelle Wie West was eight when Pak, one of four Asian entrants that year, won the US Women’s Open – Wie West would go on to win the same Championship 16 years later. This year there were 49 Asian players in the field, 20 of them from Pak’s native South Korea.

Otherwise, the 20-somethings of Hyo Joo Kim, Ariya Jutanugarn, Wei-Ling Hsu, Jin Young Ko, Nasa Hataoka and Moriya Jutanugarn have all got over the line in 2021 – as things stand over half of the world’s top 30 players are from Asia. On the PGA Tour Si Woo Kim, the 2017 Players Champion, has added to his winning CV as has KH Lee who broke through at the Byron Nelson. the women’s event. Inami, who hit the opening tee shot on the Wednesday, delivered the golf-loving host nation a silver with a closing 65 while, just out of the medals, was India’s Aditi Ashok. In the men’s event we had seven players going for bronze with Matsuyama just missing out and CT Pan of Chinese Taipei upsetting the likes of Rory McIlroy and Paul Casey with a closing 63 and then four extra holes, the final hole being played alongside the Open champion Collin Morikawa. Pan, who had his wife on the bag, actually began his week with a 74 before racing up the leaderboard with back-to-back 66s before his huge final day. In the short years to come, we’ll see more firsts as the game continues to become more and more global and we’ll most likely see the likes of Takumi Kanaya, who won the 10th Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at Sentosa Golf Club back in October 2018, continue his upward surge in the game. The Japanese 23-year-old spent 55 weeks as the World No. 1 amateur, already has three wins on the Japan Golf Tour and is now safely inside the world’s top 100. And, who knows, we might see someone go one better than Mr Lu at Birkdale and welcome in a new Open champion from Asia.

GOLF NEWS ROSE LANDS PAYNE STEWART AWARD ADIDAS EXCEL THEMSELVES WITH NO-DYE COLLECTION adidas Golf have introduced the new No-Dye Collection to their footwear range which will continue to bolster their eco credentials by featuring uppers with the material’s natural colour rather than being dyed – they will first be seen in the adicross ZX PRIMEBLUE and ZG21 Motion ranges and are now available. Normally the pre-treatment conventional dying uses large amounts of water but, this way, less water and energy is used. “The naturally-coloured fabric does require a posttreatment step to achieve the same performance qualities, yet still achieves an average of 60 per cent savings on water and energy. We’re continually evaluating ways to reduce our environmental impact when it comes to our products," explained Masun Denison, adidas Golf's global director of footwear.

Justin Rose’s outstanding charity work has been recognised after being named as this year’s recipient of the PGA Tour’s highly prestigious Payne Stewart Award. The award goes to the golfer who demonstrates Stewart’s values of character, charity and sportsmanship and Rose chose his own Kate & Justin Rose Foundation as the home for the $300,000 donation. The Englishman’s foundation has helped with the rebuilding of the Grand Bahamas Children’s Home following the damage by Hurricane Dorian in 2019 as well as helping with the ‘Blessings in a Backpack’ initiative to help hungry children in Orlando during the Covid-19 pandemic. They also launched the Rose Ladies Series last year to provide women golfers with the opportunity to play for some much-needed purses in the UK.

SENTOSA TRIO OFF TO Q SCHOOL

NEW T SERIES IRONS RELEASED BY TITLEIST There are four models in the new T-Series iron family and there's something for everyone. The T100 is for the better player where precision and feel is a must – think of the likes of Jordan Spieth and Cameron Smith. The T100•S is aimed at the same player but who wants to hit it further with two degrees stronger loft and a new Muscle Channel to enhance your ball speed. The T200 is for the player who wants help with their distance without losing anything in looks, forged feel or trajectory and this, say Titleist, is their most advanced iron ever. Finally the T300 is the ultimate game-improvement iron so high launch, lots of distance and plenty of forgiveness.

The Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying School is a four-stage event that provides membership access to the Korn Ferry Tour for all players who advance to the Final Stage. It begins with Pre-Qualifying before moving to a First and Second Stage before the climax and three of Sentosa's sponsored professionals will be taking part. The sponsorship programme is part of the #KeepItGreen initiative that not only helps with the club's environmental sustainability but also nurtures our outstanding talents and Koh Dengshan, who made the cut at the 2020 SMBC Singapore Open, Abdul Hadi and Jesse Yap will all be hoping to transfer their skills and make a big move to the dream of playing on the PGA Tour one day soon.

GAME ON!

I

Sentosa - A Hive of Activity

t’s no secret how passionate we are about the game of golf at Sentosa, but our industry-leading environmental programme remains a major focus, and one particular project continues to cause quite a buzz. We are, of course, referring to our bee colonies — growing colonies, we should say — and the work that we’re doing to help replenish the bee population is vital. Bees are the world’s most important pollinators, and it’s no exaggeration to say that our lives would look quite different without them. Not only do they play a part in pollinating the many fruits and vegetables that we

eat directly, but they also pollinate the food for the animals that we then consume. On top of this, they are responsible for two important products: honey and wax. However, they are under threat, with numbers tumbling around the world due to loss of habitat, pollution and the use of pesticides. It’s obvious that much work needs to be done to arrest this decline, but Sentosa is an island that looks after its wildlife, and we’re determined to show how golf courses can encourage nature to flourish.

Sweet Success Tetragonula Laeviceps might sound a little threatening, but you have

no need for concern when you’re out playing. These are our stingless bees, and we currently have six colonies. They’re located at the bee sanctuary to the back of the 4th hole on The Tanjong (the famous ‘Pyramid’). Our team has also been busy planting. Not only do bee-loving species such as Honolulu Creepers, Lemon Trees and Starfruit Trees produce plenty of nectar, they help make our beautiful courses even more colourful. John Chong, our partner beekeeper and the founder of Bee Amazed, has also introduced a new colony of Apis Cerana, otherwise known as Singapore honeybees. The hive is located on The Serapong’s 6th hole

A new Singapore Honey Bee Hive (Left) and Bait Hive (Right) have been added on The Serapong's 6th hole behind the old war structure Fort Berhala Reping.

We often hear the saying that the end of bees will signal the end of the world

behind the old war structure Fort Berhala Reping. A bait hive has been placed next to it to encourage existing bees in the area to settle and build their honeycombs in an effort to grow and multiply the colonies. If successful, one of the aims in the near future is to produce Sentosa Golf Club’s very own honey to be distributed to members and staff — a nice treat for everyone’s hard work! We often hear the saying that the end of bees will signal the end of the world, so we’re really proud to be able to showcase what we’re doing through our sanctuary. We hope other golf clubs will take inspiration and emulate such projects. In fact, there are some fantastic examples worldwide of how golf courses can operate for the betterment of the environment. One such example is Laguna Lang Co in Vietnam, who has a unique group of greenkeepers: a family of buffalo, which act as “bio-mowers” while also protecting the traditional Vietnamese landscape. As well as managing the rice paddies and therefore removing the need for machinery, they offer golfers an even more memorable visit. We have no plans to replace our greenkeeping team, but what a

The team at SGC and SDC joined the founder of Wild Singapore, Ria Tan, down on The Serapong's shoreline to conduct the annual intertidal survey

fantastic example of how both man and nature can thrive alongside each other.

Wild Singapore Survey As well as healthy bee numbers, otters are thriving on Sentosa Island, and it’s not unusual to see these wonderful creatures frolicking on the course, as well as the peacocks and many other species of wildlife. So, it’s also a wonderfully insightful experience working alongside the founder of Wild Singapore, Ria Tan, who visited in July when conducting the annual intertidal survey along The Serapong’s shores on hole 6 and 7. This was the first time the survey had been conducted for two years because of the pandemic, and Ria was joined by a team from Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) to assess the number of species that are located amongst the golf courses. This is important in building up the Sustainable Sentosa Island Community and also in preparation for SDC’s Environmental Impact Assessment engagements for the Sentosa-Brani Master Plan. We’ll have more bee news and updates on the latest sustainability initiatives in future issues. In the meantime, if you’d like to find out more, our team will only be so happy to tell you about our new residents. One of the many magnificent creatures to be discovered during the survey

RULES FOCUS INTERNAL OUT OF BOUNDS TANJONG HOLE 4:

OB

Please note that the left hand side of The Tanjong Hole 4 has been demarcated as an Out of Bounds (OB) zone rather than a (Red) Penalty Area to align our course markings with the R&A rules. i.e., the left side of Hole 4 is the boundary of the property which stretches through Holes 5 and 17.

(OUT OF BOUNDS)

What to do when a ball comes to rest in a bunker (during COVID-19)? TANJONG HOLE 4:

For consistency across all events (social, competition or otherwise), the principle and wording currently used for medals should apply to social play as well.

“If a ball comes to rest in either a footprint or unraked area in the bunker, the player is entitled to a preferred lie where they may place the ball within 1 scorecard length of, or as close as possible to, where the ball has come to rest, no closer to the hole.”

ANALYSED: SUNG-JAE IM Sentosa’s Head Professional Skye Neal takes a look at the swing of Sung-Jae Im and the moves that very nearly won him last year’s Masters. What I love about the first image is how his elbows are close together, from his set-up he has moved the club up on plane and, at this point, the club is out in front of his hands. So many amateurs whip the club in behind them which causes further problems, so this is a great checkpoint in the early takeaway.

From there his left shoulder works down, his left arm is tight to the chest, the hands are in, and the wrists are starting to lever the club on a slightly steeper plane as he continues to tilt and turn.

INSTRUCTION

At the top of his backswing, he's in a great position and one that all of us would do well to try and emulate. His right leg has straightened which allows for a full turn, his head is centred, the arms are extended and, yet, the swing is short of parallel. There's no over-swinging of the club which is ideal for consistent ball-striking and accuracy. Halfway down the 2020 Honda Classic champion is in a great delivery position; it's worth really noting how the hips are open and the pressure is left with the shoulders square. Then, just after impact, his hips have continued to rotate, the shoulders have now opened slightly, the head is still back in its original position and look closely how beautifully square the clubface is which is done through his body rotation – there is no manipulation with the hands, which makes for some really solid striking. As he gets through the ball, we can see how the right shoulder stays low, he produces some great use of side bend with his arms fully extended. Then, from there, SungJae gets into a lovely, balanced finish, with his hips tucked underneath his sternum and there is a slightly abbreviated finish to encourage his renowned accuracy and control. It is definitely worth looking online to fully appreciate the Korean's wonderfully deliberate backswing and his amazing rhythm and tempo. This is such a beautiful and repeatable swing that is borne out by some of his stats; he has made the cut in 74 of his 95 starts on the PGA Tour. Even at the young age of 23 he has already been as high as World No. 16 and here we are looking at a very special player.

AGRONOMY CORNER

COURSE UPGRADES NEARING COMPLETION We’d like to update you on two key projects, both of which are progressing well. Firstly, the Upper Practice Range Tee next to the Clubhouse was starting to show signs of contamination and its surface was becoming uneven due to daily wear and tear. As a result, this facility is currently closed. However, having evened and resurfaced this area, we are confident of having it back in play for September. Further improvements to the Practice Range are also being made, and we are working with a contractor to add a further 20 metres to achieve 50 metres height coverage to mitigate the risk of errant shots entering The Tanjong’s 9th fairway. It’s an advantage to have a double-ended practice range as it allows us to carry out improvements when they are needed in order to maintain our high standards, although we do apologise for the temporary inconvenience.

Renovation works are already underway on The Tanjong 15th hole

The reinvestment in our golf courses is paramount to maintaining and improving our Club

Secondly, work is underway on a new set of tees to the left of exiting the 15th on The Tanjong, and we will soon begin to re-route the cart path accordingly. The old 15th tee will be removed, and the Palm Tree hammock will be extended to tie in with the existing White Fountain native grasses; this will help address safety concerns that have developed in this area over the past couple of years. In addition, we have begun eliminating foreign grasses in the approach and collar areas around The Tanjong’s greens and replacing them with fresh grass. We are also targeting the foreign Bermuda grasses that we find in the fairways. We appreciate that these improvement works can appear rather unsightly at this time of year, but the reinvestment in our golf courses is paramount to maintaining and improving our club. We will, of course, update you of any temporary disruptions in the coming months. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

A section of the netting abutting Tanjong Hole 9 will be raised to 50m to enhance safety after the HSBC tournament next year
