PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Members,

SGC President Andrew Lim

Singapore Britcham 22nd Annual Business Awards.

I would like to start this message by sending a note of congratulations to our friends and colleagues at Sentosa Development Corporation for the tremendous work they put in for the recent launch of the next phase of their ‘Sustainable Sentosa Strategic Roadmap’. Sentosa Island’s Carbon Neutrality Goal Their hard work and dedication have laid the foundations for Sentosa Island to achieve its goal of becoming a carbon neutral destination by 2030, expanding on the Government’s Singapore Green Plan 2030 to build a sustainable Singapore and safeguard a greener world for future generations of Singaporeans and global visitors. As part of this historic milestone, the ‘Sentosa Carbon Neutral Network’, Singapore’s first carbon neutrality-based business alliance was formed to allow organisations across the Island to work together and create plans for a more sustainable future. Having made our own commitment earlier this year at the HSBC Women’s World Championship to become the world’s first carbon neutral golf club, Sentosa Golf Club is proud to stand alongside Sentosa Development Corporation and its partners in the fight against the climate crisis. World’s Best Eco-Friendly Golf Facility Notwithstanding the challenges posed by the on-going COVID-19 situation, Sentosa Golf Club’s sustainability agenda has continued to grow from strength to strength, building upon the positive recognition that has been received since the launch of our GAME ON campaign at the 2020 SMBC Singapore Open. It gives me great pleasure to announce that not only has the Club been named the ‘World’s Best EcoFriendly Golf Facility’ for the second consecutive year at the World Golf Awards, but it also collected the award for ‘Sustainability Champion of the Year’ at the

In addition to these awards, the Club continues to excel on an international stage, having recently been named as one of the ’25 World’s Most Incredible Golf Courses’ by Golf Monthly, as well as The Serapong retaining its title as ‘Singapore’s Best Golf Course’ from Golf Digest. The importance of these achievements including winning back-to-back awards at the World Golf Awards, as well as being recognised by the British Chamber of Commerce Singapore, cannot be lost on us. It demonstrates the significant development the Club has made over the last eight years through our commitment to environmental sustainability. The direction that the golf community must head towards is clear, and we are excited and honoured to be a leading contributor to this effort. There is still a lot of hard work required to complete our journey. Being the first golf club in the world to join the UN Sports for Climate Action Initiative and committing to carbon neutrality by 2022, and the recognition the Club has received for this, are steps we have taken beyond the existing initiatives, such as the removal of single-use plastics and introduction of bee colonies, that were part of our #KeepItGreen campaign. As a Club we cannot rest on our laurels when it comes to creating a sustainable future. The Club’s sustainability agenda is an integral part of our efforts to continually keep our two internationally recognised golf courses in top playing condition for our Members and our guests, and to keep Sentosa Golf Club recognised as one of the leading golfing destinations. Once again, Sentosa Golf Club would like to thank all our Members for the support they have shown throughout our ongoing sustainability journey. Thank you and happy golfing! Andrew Lim President

Dear Members,

CAPTAIN'S MESSAGE

I trust you have all been keeping well. I last wrote in our Club magazine about six months ago when the pandemic was raging around us in our neighbouring countries. At the time of writing this message, Singapore continues to see very high daily case numbers, but we are beginning to make a positive transition now, to learn to live and golf within the confines of a new endemic landscape.

SGC Captain, Vernon Khoo, provides an update on life at the Club and how the landscape is changing with the pandemic…

As an ongoing business, SGC will have to adapt to the new golfing environment of fewer, smaller-sized corporate groups and walk-in golfers that were previously the core revenue contributors of SGC’s golfing business. To deliver two excellent world class courses, we need to continue to be financially sustainable and viable as a business. This will be in the interest of all Members. The financial wellbeing of our Club will translate to a better long term Membership value for us all. In closing, the game of golf that we all love is a social one at its core. While we cannot physically gather at present as a Sentosa Golf Club community, the Greens Committee and Management team will continue to come out with creative ways to engage you and know you better. I would like to thank all Members who gamely participated in the recent Captain vs Lady Captain Game and post-golf celebratory Zoom event. I hope you enjoyed yourselves and we hope that you will continue to join in other such functions organized.

26-27. RULES & INSTRUCTION

This magazine is printed on environmentallyfriendly paper.

Many of us have said that COVID-19 is here to stay, and we will have to make the best out of the challenges it will present. The Club has been running at 100% occupancy since our reopening after the Circuit Breaker as members cannot travel out of Singapore. The situation has not changed, and we anticipate that golf and memberships will continue to see very high demand in the days ahead. Despite the high daily traffic, our golf courses and Club facilities have remained excellent. This is due to the dedication and hard work of our SGC team. I applaud them for consistently delivering the two world class golf courses Members enjoy and I am immensely proud of the many international accolades we have gained over the past years, including Sentosa Golf Club’s recent inclusion as one of the ‘25 World’s Most Incredible Golf Courses’ by Golf Monthly.

MEMBER NEWS SENTOSA CLAIMS TOP AWARDS It was a night to remember for everyone at the Club following the 2021 World Golf Awards in Dubai, with Sentosa receiving a number of prestigious honours, including being named the ‘World’s Best Eco-Friendly Golf Facility’ for the second consecutive year. Speaking at the ceremony, Sentosa Golf Club General Manager, Andrew Johnston, thanked everyone at the Club for an “outstanding achievement”. “Sentosa is humbled winning these awards,” he said. “However, our focus will remain on continuing the excellent work that has been carried out over the last three years and to continue to lead the industry in tackling the fight against the climate crisis.” Chris Frost, Director of the World Golf Awards, offered his praise, too: “The recognition for this award has come from votes by industry professionals and consumers who know and have experienced the club’s facilities. With the world envisioning and hopeful for a carbon neutral planet, every club in the world will need to improve and follow in the footsteps of clubs such as Sentosa.” Sentosa Golf Club's General Manager & Director of Agronomy, Andrew Johnston, was also named runner up in the 2021 Healthy Land Stewardship Award at the GCSAA Environmental leaders in the Golf

Awards. It comes on the back of the Club being named ‘Sustainability Champion Of The Year’ at the Britcham 22nd Annual Business Awards. Organised by the British Chamber of Commerce Singapore, Sentosa was chosen for the award by demonstrating an effective, comprehensive and purpose-driven responsible business programme that reinforced their commitment to operating in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible manner. Sentosa’s special night in Dubai did not end there, as The Serapong was also named ‘Singapore’s Best Golf Course’ for the fourth consecutive year. Ranked 59th in Golf Digest’s Top 100 World’s Greatest Golf Courses 2020-21, the revered championship course underwent an extensive renovation last year to maintain its top quality playing standards and elevate the course to a new level on the world stage. The Club’s commitment in the fight against the climate crisis in golf has seen an array of initiatives rolled out over the past 12 months. At the HSBC Women’s World Championship in April, Sentosa announced a new pledge to become the world’s first carbon neutral golf club by 2022. Contributions from golf rounds are being used to support the purchase

of certified carbon offset through regional Forestry or Blue Carbon projects in the region. Sentosa Development Corporation recently unveiled the next phase of the Sustainable Sentosa strategic roadmap, so when talking about the importance of the awards, Club President, Andrew Lim, was keen to discuss the bigger picture. “This is just the beginning of a long journey and although achieving some success now is rewarding, the true reward will be making an impact on the world and bringing together all of our peers, including Sentosa Island, who have recently announced further steps in their aim to become a carbon neutral destination by 2030.”

MEMBERS INTRODUCTION NIGHT As many of you will be aware, we have not had a Members Introduction Night due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, the first virtual session was held in September. Attended by new members, President Andrew Lim shared his vision for Sentosa Golf Club and plans for the future since he started serving his term in April this year. We hope to resume back to normalcy and have the Members Introduction Night conducted in person in the near future.

CAPTAIN VERSUS LADY CAPTAIN After a year of disruption caused by COVID-19, the annual Captain vs. Lady Captain Cup tournament returned. It ended with a simple hybrid celebration attended by Club Members through Zoom, which was a different after-golf experience. Although we were unable to meet in person, it was a fantastic evening’s entertainment, and we thank all those who took time out of their busy schedules to attend. And of course, well done to our Lady Captain, Mrs Gloria Kuok, who claimed victory and secured her hands on the cup.

GOLF NEWS IM AND KO VICTORIOUS AGAIN SENTOSA INCLUDED ON BUCKET LIST COURSES The UK’s No.1 golf magazine and website Golf Monthly recently compiled their list of ‘25 World's Most Incredible Golf Courses’ and Sentosa was part of the very elite company. Golf Monthly said: “Set on the exclusive island of Sentosa, the resort features two Championship golf courses, both with stunning views of the Singapore Straits. The Serapong and The Tanjong have hosted some elite tournaments like the AsiaPacific Amateur Championship, HSBC Women’s World Championship and the Singapore Open. The Serapong is regarded as one of Asia’s best whilst The Tanjong is well worth playing too.” Also, part of the list were Augusta National, Cypress Point, the Old Course and Royal Melbourne.

ASIAN TOUR SET TO COMPLETE 2020-21 SEASON

Sung-Jae Im was at his dominant best when he captured the Shriners Children’s Open by four shots after closing with a brilliant 62. The win comes 19 months after his first career title, a one-shot victory at The Honda Classic, and came on his 100th PGA Tour start. To date he has now made 79 cuts and 20 Top-10 finishes, along with the two wins. While on the LPGA Tour Jin Young Ko finished off a wire-to-wire victory in the Cognizant Founders Cup with her 14th straight round in the 60s that matched a 16-year record held by Annika Sorenstam from 2005. Sorenstam won three of four tournaments during her stretch, including a major, while Ko has now won twice and was runner-up and tied for sixth in the others.

FALDO SERIES ASIA BACK WITH A BANG

The Asian Tour, which stopped play in March last year because of the pandemic, have revealed that they will stage four end-of-year tournaments and crown an Order of Merit champion in early 2022. There will be back-toback events in Thailand, both with purses of $1 million, in late November and early December before moving to Singapore for a further two events, again in consecutive weeks – all players will need to be fully vaccinated in order to compete. The top 30 players from the final Order of Merit – Wade Ormsby still leads the money list after his win in Hong Kong in January 2020 – will receive automatic entry into next year’s season-opening Saudi International Powered by SoftBank Investment Advisers.

The Faldo Series Asia was back in action and there were a couple of stellar performances to signal its return. Miko Lo Yung-Cheng, aged just 13 and who sadly lost his Taiwanese mother last year, won the Chinese Taipei Championship with a staggering sixunder aggregate of 210 to win by five at Hsin Yi GC. “For a 13-year-old to beat players up to six and seven years older than him is quite exceptional," said Faldo. While at the Shenzhen Championship Zhang Zhenxian closed with a 67 to prevail by five. It was the second significant success for Zhang at Mission Hills having captured the overall boys’ title at last year’s Jack Nicklaus Championship. The 2020-21 Faldo Series Asia season is supported by The R&A and endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation.

T

he International Golf Federation’s Executive Director on the success of golf at the Olympics, growth of the game and the importance of sustainability. There were so many positives flowing from the Olympic Games for golf, including: medallists from five different countries, a record-breaking seven-man play-off for the bronze medal, a play-off for silver and bronze for the women’s event, an Olympic record round of 61 by Rory Sabbatini representing Slovakia and a record-tying 62 by gold medallist Nelly Korda of the USA. So, not only were we very pleased that the Tokyo Games were held, but we were also ecstatic with the outstanding success of both golf competitions. With its success in implementing COVID-19 practices that enabled professional tournaments to recommence in June 2020, the International Golf Federation (IGF) was able to take a leadership role within the Olympic movement on

10

the development of the playbooks that outlined the policies and practices which were instrumental to the Games being delivered. Additionally, we spent considerable time on site in Tokyo in the months leading up to the Games, assisting and guiding the Organising Committee with its planning and preparations. Leading up to the Games, through our Athletes Committee, we engaged with and communicated constantly with the athletes, their agents

and their national committees to ensure that they were fully informed and prepared for the challenges and experiences of participating at the Games. Moving forward, golf’s participation in the Olympics is our major growth initiative. We intend to optimise digital engagement by leveraging golf’s participation during the Games while driving growth in audience development and engagement across IGF’s social media platforms and worldwide viewership, using

an athlete-centric approach. The Olympics provide golf exposure to an audience of nearly 3.2 billion. Sixty percent of those who view golf at the Games do not watch it regularly and are much younger than those who do and 55 per cent of them are female. That said, the IGF alone cannot place golf clubs in people’s hands, and it is up to our Member Federations to capitalise on the tremendous increased exposure through the Olympics and the halo effect following the Games to implement new initiatives that will attract more participants to the sport. The Games also attract new fans, and it is up to our membership to convert these fans into participants. Over the next few years, the IGF is committed to four strategic priorities, and these reflect our four core activities in all our work – 1) Administer 2) Represent 3) Events and 4) Growth. There are a number of objectives but three in particular stand out: first, to make golf more accessible by providing pathways for the growth of recreational and elite golf for golfers with disabilities; next, to create more events and opportunities for athletes to participate at the Olympic Games; and finally, to secure the inclusion of golf in the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games programme. The growth of any sport is important and, in order to do so, it must remain relevant no matter where in the world you are. To do this we need to explore and create new opportunities for growth and awareness of golf and one such avenue is digital innovation.

One of the biggest challenges to the growth of the game is the structural conflict of memberships of different national federations being based upon golf facilities and therefore their inherent restrictions on memberships, hence hindering the growth and participation of the sport. Likewise, safeguarding the environment is a top global priority. As a major international sport that requires significant land use, golf has a responsibility to embrace the principles and practice of sustainability. Therefore, the IGF recognises that optimising the playing quality of the golf course in harmony with the conservation of its natural environment under economically sound and socially responsible management is of paramount importance. In this spirit, the IGF works closely with two of its delivery partners,

www.sentosagolf.com

the USGA and The R&A, on the promotion of sustainable practices and also works on a number of sustainability initiatives with the International Olympic Committee, which includes the IOC and UN Environment Clean Seas and IOCDow Carbon Partnership. The IGF is also a member of the United Nations Sports for Climate Action Initiative. Sentosa’s recent commitment to becoming the world’s first carbon neutral golf club by 2022 is both commendable and significant, not only for golf, but also in sport and I strongly believe all clubs understand the responsibility they have to implement sustainable practices and the leadership role they can take within their local communities. Sentosa’s example can be used as a primary case study by other clubs on how to do this and to help them assess their own situation and develop actions to improve it.

SINGAPORE GOLF ASSOCIATION Growing Golf for 60 Years

T

he Singapore Golf Association (SGA) recently celebrated its 60th anniversary with the objective then, as it is today, to promote and grow the game of golf in the country. Three gentlemen, JW Stogdon, then the president of Royal Singapore GC, CY Koh and Joseph Quah founded the association and Stogdon, at the first AGM the following year, was installed as its first president. At the time its members were Royal Singapore, the Island Club, which would become the Singapore Island Country Club, Keppel Club, 14

Changi GC and the former military golf clubs of Tengah and Seletar. Twenty years ago, golf clubs without real estate could join as Associate Members so handicaps could be obtained without having to be members of golf and country clubs and, in 2010, the association accepted Affiliate Members which are any body, society or organisation that was committed to furthering the interest of the sport. To focus in a little closer the mission statement reads: To be a national governing body of golf that monitors golf development, to enhance

golfing experience and promote mass participation by providing the fraternity with the support it requires. While the association’s vision is clear and covers all the great things about the game: a) To develop and promote sportsmanship and character through golf b) To identify and nurture a greater depth of talent c) To become one of the leading golfing nations in Southeast Asia, in terms of wins and world rankings and d) To be committed to promoting and developing the sport across all aspects of the golfing population. The SGA currently has a total of

about 37,000 registered golfers in the Centralised Handicapping System from SGA’s 11 ordinary members, seven associate members and four affiliate members. These days the SGA runs a High Performance Programme which consists of national, development and junior squads and the programme has borne fruit when you look at the achievements at the top end of the game. At the 2017 Southeast Asian Games Singapore picked up the men’s team gold and individual silver, courtesy of Marc Ong, before winning the individual gold, through James Leow, and the team silver in 2019. Similarly at the 2019 Putra Cup Singapore landed the men’s team gold, something that hadn’t happened since 2011, as well as the individual thanks to a wire-to-wire performance from Nicklaus Chiam. All of this starts of course with the junior development, and this has seen a prolific spike in terms of playing opportunities with a Futures Squad, for 6-12-year-olds, being launched in 2020, 18, nine and six-hole events, depending on your age, as well as the prestigious annual three-leg series at the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge

and the Singapore Junior Golf Championship. And, at the very top end of the game, the SGA organises the Singapore Open and National Amateur Championships for the men, women and seniors. Otherwise, the SGA Professional Program supports local professionals who have previously represented Singapore at major international amateur events (currently seven professionals, five men and two women) and it organised the eightleg Singapore Pro Series Invitational presented by FTAG. This provided local professionals the chance to compete during the pandemic when they had limited to no overseas playing opportunities. At a grass-roots level, to help promote the game, the SGA, Singapore Professional Golfers’ Association and the NTUC Club, one of the largest lifestyle providers in Singapore, have collaborated to make it possible for everyone to ‘play affordable golf’. The three parties signed an Memorandum of Understanding this year to help make the game become more inclusive by lowering the barriers of entry and enhancing its mass appeal with an emphasis on golf for leisure rather than competition. There will be affordable golf trials and learning

the sport will be made easy rather than what has previously been too much hard work. The aim is to reach out to 50,000 golfers in three years. And, through social media and the recently-launched GOLF:SG bi-monthly interactive e-magazine, there will be the opportunity to keep abreast of the local golfing scene. So where does Sentosa fit in with the growth of the game in Singapore? As you might expect the club has been supporting the initiatives at every level of the game. One example was the SGA Talent Identification Day where 120 juniors, aged between 6-12, participated in a series of skills tests. From there 60 of the juniors formed part of the SGA Futures Squad this year and, from there, we can expect to see a collection of promising names come though. Another interesting activity was the ‘Gotong Royong’ day where juniors spent an hour smartening up The Tanjong by filling in divots and repairing pitch marks and, in return, 16

they were treated to nine holes on the world-class layout. Otherwise, being able to host the leading tournaments that Sentosa brings to the country cannot be underestimated in growing the game, both on a national and international level. In recent years the likes of major winners Sergio Garcia, Adam Scott, Inbee Park, Michelle Wie and Paula Creamer have all emerged victorious at Sentosa, making headlines all over the world and Sentosa’s stock has never been higher given its trailblazing efforts in the area of sustainability, with its commitment to the United Nation’s Sports for Climate Action Initiative. So, from those relatively humble beginnings, we now see the SGA with Lexus as a corporate sponsor, FootJoy the apparel sponsor and HSBC backing the three-legged Youth Golf Challenge. The next 60 years promises to be equally as special.

“It is as difficult as expected but I don't feel out of place here” Three of Sentosa’s sponsored professionals reflect on their recent Korn Ferry Tour Q-School experience. There are few schools tougher than the Korn Ferry Q-School and Jesse Yap, Abdul Hadi and Koh Dengshan will all be the better for the experience of trying to make it onto the second tier of the PGA Tour. Abdul Hadi made a fantastic start at Orange County National with a brilliant opening 65 before eventually coming up short on one under while, at the same venue, Koh Dengshan was four over for his four rounds. Jesse Yap, the third of Sentosa’s sponsored professionals, also finished in red figures but, with the qualifying mark at a blistering 11 under, he also missed out on the 2nd Stage. But the chance to play and practise in the United States, among so many other talented players, was a huge benefit to the player’s overall efforts.

Jesse Yap

“It has been very positive; the weather has been amazing, and I have been able to practise without too many distractions. Competition-wise, it is as difficult as expected but I don't feel out of place or that I don't belong here. One highlight would be making it to the Monday qualifier for the Fortinet Championship, the season-opening PGA Tour event. I played well and, on another day, if the putts dropped, I would have had a very good chance to qualify,” explained Yap. For Hadi the experience has whetted his appetite to come and try again in 2022 after first, attempting to achieve that elusive PGA Tour start. “I’m just grateful to be travelling and competing again after a year and a half. The level of golf here is really high and, to make it past any stage of Q-School or to win any tournament, you need to shoot low scores. The plan now is to play some mini-tour events and also

try to get into Monday Qualifiers for PGA Tour events as well as working on my game ahead of the Singapore Open next year.” Dengshan too will stay in the States and hopes to use a Monday qualifier to play on the PGA Tour and he has learnt plenty about his game in recent weeks. "Playing at the Q-school for the first time has been an eye-opener, I really need to increase my distance and improve my putting as this is a big advantage here to score on the par 5s. Also, I think we can more or less get used to the lowscoring numbers that we need to shoot out here when we play next year. The grass is Bermuda which is similar to Asia and the courses are generally quite wide and long and it can get windy by about two to three clubs in the afternoon. Scoring wise it is really low, even at the tough courses, and 66 and below are common scores."

Mapping Out A Sustainable Future

entosa Development Corporation (SDC) has committed to a number of major goals in the next phase of its landmark Sustainable Sentosa strategic roadmap, with the aim of helping the Island to become carbon neutral by 2030. At a launch event to unveil the next steps of its roadmap, Ms Thien Kwee Eng, Chief Executive Officer, SDC, described the Island resort as a “microcosm of Singapore”, saying it “provides a unique environment to trial and implement innovative solutions that can advance Singapore’s sustainability journey.”

Kwee Eng, added: “This is a journey that requires collective effort, and we are proud to be launching the Sustainable Sentosa strategic roadmap with strong support from our Island businesses and partners. Through these efforts, we will strengthen Sentosa’s position as a beloved getaway for Singaporeans, and as a sustainable tourism destination. We look forward to implementing meaningful initiatives that inspire Singaporeans and businesses to take action towards a sustainable future.”

Achieving Carbon Neutrality One of the main areas will see a focus on studying solutions to

harness renewable energy. Examples include the introduction of innovative waste-to-energy gasification systems to transform horticultural waste into synthetic gas as a low-emission fuel to generate electricity and using solar and tidal energy at underutilised locations. Collectively, these projects have the potential to generate sufficient renewable energy to offset the emissions of approximately 300,000 hotel room nights. Of course, a number of initiatives are already proving successful here at the Club. For example, our waste digesters grind down food and horticultural waste, which can then be reused as fertiliser on the golf course. Meanwhile, we’ve also

We’ve also launched carbonfree golf rounds, and the use of single-use plastics has been eliminated in an effort to reduce waste. launched carbon-free golf rounds, and the use of single-use plastics has been eliminated in an effort to reduce waste. Other important goals laid out in the roadmap centre on transportation and infrastructure. By 2025, the aim is for Sentosa Island’s public transportation to be 100% electric. When we reach 2030, all SDC-owned car parks will have electric vehicle (EV) charging available. Earlier this year, the Club announced a new partnership with Porsche Asia Pacific, and we’ve installed five new EV charging stations as part of Porsche Destination Charging, a global charging network available at premium lifestyle destinations. SGC is the first golf club in Singapore and the Southeast Asia region to join the programme.

Food waste generated by Sentosa Golf Club is digested into fertiliser to facilitate a circular economy, as Sentosa moves towards becoming a zero waste precinct.

Greener buildings falls under the same umbrella, and all new SDC-owned buildings will be constructed to attain Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy (SLE) certification, something the clubhouse has already been granted. SDC has also launched Singapore’s first carbon neutrality-driven business alliance, the Sentosa Carbon Neutral Network (SCNN), and it is one of 17 founding members. Combined, the SDC group accounts for more than 90% of the island’s estimated carbon profile, so recognises how critical it is to collaborate and share resources and expertise to help develop Sentosa-wide sustainability solutions.

A Sustainable Tourism Destination The second aim of the roadmap is to help the Island become a globally recognised, certified sustainable tourism destination. Come December, Sentosa will launch a series of new sustainability-themed tours to highlight the importance of building a sustainable future. Through these tours, guests will be able to venture into another side of Sentosa to explore its hidden gems, while appreciating nature conservation efforts, marine life and heritage assets. SDC will also launch new low-carbon leisure experiences in the Southern Islands to extend the Sentosa getaway. This will be in conjunction with the opening of a new ferry jetty at Sentosa Cove Village, which will begin offering ferry services from the fourth quarter of 2021. As part of these new experiences, guests can look forward to exploring St John’s and Lazarus Islands on rented bicycles and ‘glamping’ amidst nature, while potentially having food delivered to the islands via drone delivery. Talking of food, for which we have a great passion, the Club has been working alongside SDC and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) in an effort to increase locally sourced produce. Who knows, one day your mid-round snack might even arrive by drone! What we can say with a greater degree of certainty is that visitors will soon be able to enjoy a carbon neutral wedding on the island – and what better place to celebrate than Sentosa Golf Club?

HOW TO PLAY THE SERAPONG In this issue, our Head Professional, Skye Neal, offers his tee-to-green tips to help you plot your way around The Serapong. It is, as many of you will probably agree, a “beast of a course”. However, with a little improvement on your course management, there’s no reason why you can’t post a good score here. Follow Skye’s advice and you’ll certainly have more fun. Tee management

OUT OF BOUNDS

SP 7 SP 3

No matter what tees you play from – be it blacks, blues, whites or reds – every tee shot requires 100% focus. My first bit of advice, even before you’ve swung a club, is to choose your tees wisely. Which ones? Well, there’s a handy formula I suggest using to work that out. How far do you hit your 5-iron? Say it’s 170m. Multiply that by 36 (6,120m) and there’s your answer. Do the maths and give yourself that guide. You’ll certainly enjoy your round more.

SERAPONG HOLE 3, INTERNAL OB Our Handicap and Rules Committee at Sentosa Golf Club would like to remind all players that when playing the 3rd Hole on The Serapong, there is an Internal Out of Bounds area when the ball comes to rest beyond the cart path of Hole 7.

SENTOSA GOLF CLUB MAGAZINE

Go with what you’ve got I see so many golfers go out there and battle with their swing. Most amateur golfers would do well to just go with what they’ve got on the day. So, if in the warm-up you’ve been hitting fades, play with that shot shape. Try not to think about your swing too much on the course, either. When you’re playing, think about your target and start direction instead. It might sound like simple advice, but see how that serves you when you next play.

Course Management One of the best pieces of advice I can give you, especially when you’re playing The Serapong, is that you don’t always need to hit driver. Sometimes the better option is to take the hazards out of play. Holes 1, 3, 10, 11, 13, 15 and 16 are prime examples of holes that don’t always require driver. Secondly, aim at the centre of every green, both in terms of distance and line. Do this every time and not only will your greens in regulation stats improve, you’ll also shoot lower scores. In other words, unless the state of the match demands that you have to, don’t take on sucker pins and short side yourself!

Fairway Bunkers

Greenside Bunkers

If you’re struggling from fairway bunkers, this checklist will help:

I always say that the primary objective is to get out, and the secondary objective is to get the ball as close as possible to the pin. You want to be aggressive and ensure that you follow through with the shot (no quitting), so that the ball flies out on a cushion of sand. Our greenside bunkers have well compacted sand, so you may wish to consider using a lob wedge with less bounce, as opposed to a regular sand wedge.

1. Take adequate loft to clear the lip 2. Wriggle your feet a fraction for stability 3. Have your weight a little more on the lead side 4. Grip down on the club 5. Take a shorter swing to keep balanced 6. Looking at the top of the ball can help get the desired ball first, sand second contact

Putting I’m always here to offer my help with your putting stroke, but if there’s one piece of free putting advice I can give, it’s this: pay heed to the green speeds advertised daily on the boards! Three putt avoidance is the key for maintaining momentum and shooting lower scores, so being able to adjust your stroke length for the various speeds will pay dividends.
