CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE

SGC Captain Vernon Khoo

Dear Fellow Members, next few weeks. May I seek Members’ patience and kind co-operation during this period.

I trust you that have all been keeping well. Tournament Season Please allow me to begin this message by congratulating our newly crowned HSBC Women’s World Champion, Jin Young Ko, after her welldeserved win on The Tanjong. Although there were a few absentees this year, there was no shortage of star power, on course action and excitement with 15 of the Top 20 Rolex World Ranking players featuring. This year’s HSBC Women’s World Championship (WWC) has also seen the welcomed easing of COVID19 protocols with patrons allowed to intermingle on shared balconies and Members able to enjoy the action on the golf course. We hope that as the overall pandemic situation in Singapore improves, Sentosa Golf Club will be able to host all Members and public spectators so that everyone can fully enjoy the on and off course event festivities envisioned in time to come. There has been much work and sacrifice that has gone unnoticed behind the scenes of both the SMBC Singapore Open and HSBC WWC. I would like to applaud and commend the truly heroic efforts of our staff that prepared both our golf courses to world class golf conditioning, delivering the tournaments safely while exceeding standards and expectations. This was achieved in spite of a spike in COVID-19 cases resulting in a significant manpower shortfall in the past months. Our Golf Agronomy team deserve special recognition as they had to work doubly hard with just 60% manpower throughout the Singapore Open. The team pulled the rabbit out of the hat and showcased The Serapong in immaculate condition to the world. Looking Ahead The highly infectious albeit less deadly COVID-19 Omicron variant continues to sweep through our community and Sentosa Golf Club has not been spared. At the time of writing this Message, our Clubhouse and F&B staff are managing through manpower challenges that should be overcome in the

Against the current backdrop of our recovery from this pandemic, both the General and Greens Committees have been working closely with Management to normalise Sentosa Golf Club’s business and golf play, with the hope of gradually bringing these back to the pre-pandemic days we long for. The Club has gradually re-introduced corporate and walk-in golf to help generate much needed business revenue. With this set in motion, we have also decided to lift the “3 Rounds Per Week Cap” on Members’ access to golf, that was implemented previously as a short term solution to help manage the excessive demand. The Greens Committee has also agreed to resume Monthly Medals in addition to Sentosa Golf Club’s participation in the SGA League Games commencing this month. We anticipate that there will be a period of adjustment as everyone transitions back into a ‘new golfing normal’ again. But I cannot stress how important this is and I appeal to Members to adapt and take on this challenge. Sentosa Golf Club is one of the best in the world and our Members enjoy the admiration and envy of many golfers. Our Club is a unique blend of individuals from diverse backgrounds – Singaporeans, permanent residents, and foreign residents. COVID-19 has limited our ability to interact and bond as Members, causing pressures and tensions from time to time. I hope that the gradual reintroduction of these Club activities will help foster camaraderie, bridge cultural differences, and develop our Club culture of warmth, courtesy and friendliness among both Members and staff. May I end this Message by saying Thank You to all my fellow Members, for your support and understanding in advance, as we embark on a new normal and build a caring and gracious Club culture together. A RETURN TO RACING Maserati combines luxury and racing with the new MC20

In its return to racing, the MC20 is dubbed as the first of its kind by Maserati, and rightly so. With the MC20, Maserati returns to a stage where it has always starred, that of Supercars that combine luxury and performance with the unique Maserati Style.

Apart from its racing lineage, Maserati is also well known for luxury and design. The MC20 is sleek, with lines and contours exuding intent and purpose. The side mirrors, air vents, side air intakes and rear spoiler blend neatly with the car’s entire form. On top of that, the MC20 is at its most elegant and stylish when opening its impressive butterfly doors.

The MC20 is a Maserati with mind-blowing aerodynamic efficiency. At the heart of the MC20 is its new, patented Nettuno engine, the premier creation of the Maserati Engine Lab in Modena. The MC20’s pre-chamber combustion system makes use of Formula 1 technology, resulting in a power-dense V6 engine. The result is a full surge of power that maximises its 630-horsepower engine, with a top speed reach of 325km/h. Hitting the gas lets you go nimbly from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds. The new MC20 is the model from which Maserati draws inspiration for the car of the future, 100% made in Italy, fully developed and engineered in Modena. It strikes the perfect balance between opposites, the ideal trade-off of craftsmanship and engineering, hand-made masterpieces and precision machining, to reconcile the apparently distant, contrasting worlds of on-road motoring and racing. GM’S MESSAGE Dear Members,

GM Andrew Johnston

On behalf of the Sentosa Golf Club staff family, I would like to begin this Message by extending our gratitude to all Members for your generosity and kindness during the recent Chinese New Year holidays. We understand that not everyone participates in the tradition of giving ‘red packets’, but we also know the symbolic gesture is to help spread good health and good luck, something we are all focused on during the current times that we live in. For those who did not participate and opted to contribute to the Cluborganized central Ang Pow fund, we are also very thankful for your well wishes at a global level. We truly believe in offering an exceptional experience, 365 days of the year, and are grateful to serve our wonderful Members and guests regardless of their status, race, or religion. On behalf of the entire team at Sentosa Golf Club, we wish all of you a Happy New Year, Good Health and Best of Luck throughout the rest of 2022. As the year progresses post the major SGC tournaments, we will start to undertake upgrades to our Practice Range facility. Our appointed contractor has developed a creative method to allow us to keep the Range open for Members to practice, while we continue to work on safety improvements. The contractor will construct a moveable cage and erect it around their workspace so that they can work safely. They will move the cage as and when needed while they are working at various locations across the Practice Range. There will be times when the Club may need to close the Range with little to no notice for a variety of tasks, but our goal will always be to make sure it is left operational for as long as possible. In May, Members can expect to see the new extended mast poles for the Practice Range arrive and during this period, the facility will be closed for a couple of weeks to make sure both the poles and nets are properly installed. This is being done in best interests of everyone at the Club, so I am sure you will all join me in agreeing this is a good compromise. There are also several other projects planned at the Club across the balance of this year. The majority of these will revolve around coring that will help to eliminate compaction on our golf courses, to help maintain our world class surfaces that Members enjoy, as well as small improvements to a few bunker noses to improve accessibility. Lastly, we plan to complete the replacement of the remaining collars of The Tanjong’s greens with new turf so as to aid in the removal of foreign grasses around the perimeter of the greens. We thank you in advance for your forbearance and will keep Members updated of our progress throughout the year. Kind Regards,

Andrew Johnston General Manager & Director of Agronomy

MEMBER NEWS SGC TRIO ENJOY SINGAPORE OPEN TEST There were mixed fortunes for our sponsored professionals at the 2022 Singapore Open in January. Despite all finishing on seven-over-par, Koh Deng Shan, Abdul Hadi and Jesse Yap gained valuable experience teeing up alongside some of the best players on the Asian Tour.

Koh Deng Shan

Deng Shan got off to a really positive start with a 69 in the opening round. The Serapong bit back in round two, although a 76 was good enough to make the cut. A pair of 73s followed, but it was still a memorable weekend. “As a Singaporean it is always a great experience to play in our National Open at Sentosa Golf Club and I am very fortunate to have this opportunity,” he reflected. “It was also a fantastic week, and I would like to thank the SGC Committees, members and staff of the Club for their support and encouragement.”

Jesse Yap

Jesse Yap was equally impressive on the Thursday, firing a three-under-par 68, but that was followed with a second-round 81. “It’s never fun to come down the last hole and not really have a chance to make the cut, but there were many enjoyable moments throughout the tournament,” he admitted. Despite not making the weekend, Hadi (74,75) was also keen to highlight the positives, including the course feedback. “There were nothing but good words from all the players about the new renovations,” he said. “Everyone was talking about how pure the conditions were and I think everyone enjoyed the new challenges, like the tee shot on hole six. It’s safe to say that everyone enjoyed playing the course during the week.”

Sentosa has been kept a ‘traffic light free’ resort to preserve its island charm, with roundabouts in place to help to smoothen traffic flow and reduce traffic conflict points. The most commonly used roundabout that links Allanbrooke Road (to and from the city), Artillery Avenue (to the Cove) and Bukit Manis Road (to our Club) has four exits. With two lanes, drivers are prone to making mistakes, such as using the wrong lane and failing to signal their intentions correctly. We would like to remind all drivers to slow down when approaching a roundabout and give way to traffic on your right, and be aware of which exit you intend to take before approaching the roundabout. It’s also a good idea to give yourself ample time before you tee off, not just to help you play better golf, but to encourage safe driving.

Why did you become a member at SGC? In the past, my wife was a corporate member of Sentosa Golf Club and we have always enjoyed playing at the Club, which in my opinion has some of the best golf courses in Singapore. Also, I asked my good friend Lawrence Boo, who is a member of Sentosa Golf Club, Tanah Merah Country Club and Singapore Island Country Club, of the 3 golf clubs which one he would recommend. Without any hesitation, he said “Sentosa Golf Club”. It is a no brainer!

Favourite thing to do in Singapore? Playing golf and eating!

Favourite thing about Golf? The beautiful scenery, greenery and open space when playing golf. At Sentosa Golf Club, there is also the added view of the Singapore Straits and the Harbour.

GOLF NEWS NEW INTERNATIONAL SERIES COMING TO ASIAN TOUR

KAEWKANJANA'S SENTOSA SUCCESS Thailand’s Sadom Kaewkanjana captured the SMBC Singapore Open at Sentosa with a three-shot win over Japan’s Yuto Katsuragawa and Joohyung Kim from Korea. The young Thai star put together a bogey-free 69 on the Serapong Course to finish on 13 under while Kim would wrap up the Asian Tour Order of Merit title. Sihwan Kim was fourth and all four players will now tee it up in this year's Open Championship at St Andrews. “This is amazing, it wasn’t easy,” said Sadom who has now won five times in the past three months. “It has taken a lot of hard work to get here, especially over the last two years. I hope it’s the start of a great year.”

The Asian Tour will see a new 10-event series integrated into its 2022-23 schedule with events taking place in Thailand, England, Korea, Vietnam, the Middle East, China, Singapore and Hong Kong and featuring prize purses ranging from $1.5m to $2m per event. There was also the unveiling of the new brand, name and logo, as well as an increase in investment from $200m to $300m. “The International Series is a new upper-tier of elite events, the likes of which the region has not seen before," said Cho Minn Thant, the Asian Tour's Commissioner and CEO. "It also signifies the beginning of our relationship with our new strategic partner LIV Golf Investments and its CEO Greg Norman.”

NEW TITLEIST VELOCITY AND TRUFEEL BALLS

JOHNSTON RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS AWARD Golf Inc magazine recently named Andrew Johnston as one of the ‘Most Innovative People in Golf’. The Club’s General Manager and Director of Agronomy at Sentosa is part of an exclusive list of nine people and he has been listed for his leadership, pioneering methodologies in waste management and agronomic best practices.

Titleist has revamped their Velocity and TruFeel balls for 2022. As it sounds the Velocity is a two-piece distance ball and it is recognised as the longest ball in the Titleist range. The ionomer cover has also had a makeover and the new octahedral pattern, with 350 dimples, help to generate a high flight with a little more consistency and some improved greenside performance. The TruFeel is at the other end of the range. This is the softest ball in the Titleist family and the goal here is to produce a softer ball that still provides some distance. This is done with a new, larger core (to provide the speed) and a thinner cover. The TruFeel still features an alignment side stamp to help you sink those putts.

RETURNING HOME

WITH A DISH Singapore confirmed its first case of COVID-19 on 23 Jan 2020. With the rising number of cases each day, Singapore went into a Circuit Breaker lockdown from 7th April to 1st June 2020. Border control was restricted, leaving many of our non-Singaporean colleagues unable to travel back to visit their families.

Chang Poh Kheng has chosen to cook Tomato Fish for his Mother:

Earlier this year, the VTL (Vaccinated Travel Lane) was announced by the Singapore Government, allowing the opening of our international borders to certain countries in October 2021. Our F&B team were particularly affected by the lockdown with four of our chefs; Chang Poh Kheng, Leong Kai Tee, Yeo Chaun Chun, and Sunny Cheong, amongst the many people who were unable to return home during the lockdown. They are now looking forward to being reunited with their families in Malaysia and have each planned a special dish they will present to their families as the very first dish they will cook upon their return.

KO DELIVERS KNOCKOUT PUNCH AT SENTOSA Jin Young Ko continued her sensational form to capture her first HSBC Women’s World Championship (HSBC WWC) title.

I

t’s almost impossible to pick out which of Jim Young Ko’s incredible stats were the most impressive after capturing the HSBC Women’s World Championship at Sentosa Golf Club. The win at ‘Asia’s Major’ was her sixth LPGA Tour victory in her last 10 starts. She became the first player in tour history to record 15 consecutive rounds in the 60s (a record she had shared with Annika Sorenstam

12

and So Yeon Ryu) and, equally as outstandingly ridiculous, she became the first player to shoot 30 consecutive rounds under par. It’s almost too much to take in; a winning strike rate of 6o per cent and going round after round without missing a green and always shooting in the 60s. And she did it all by picking up five birdies in her last six holes to pip In Gee Chun and the fast-

finishing Minjee Lee (63). Ko came to The Tanjong’s 18th hole tied with Jeongeun Lee6, but the former US Women’s Open champion bladed a bunker shot through the green to take six while Ko calmly rolled in a brilliant 10-foot birdie putt to prevail by two after knocking a nerveless iron shot over the pin. It was the 26-year-old’s first HSBC title and 24th win as a professional. “I’m just proud of myself to record

60s 15 rounds, like straight. I feel amazing. I felt not comfortable on my swing on the front nine so I expected that the back nine will be better. So, I found something, and I got a lot of birdies on the back nine,” the World No. 1 explained. Maybe the most remarkable aspect of all this was that this was Ko’s first start of 2022. The 26-yearold last teed it up at the seasonending Tour Championship in mid-November 2021, where she won with a closing 63 despite an injured left wrist that hampered her practice and warm-ups. She then spent the off-season tinkering with her backswing and working on her putting. “Many people say my swinging looks fine, but it doesn't feel comfortable. So, I went to change my backswing a little bit. And I’m still working on it but it’s getting better.”

South Korea's In Gee Chun lines up a putt on the final day

All this after Ko hit her final 63 greens to close out her 2021 season. In Singapore she would miss the 4th green on day one which ended the streak but, at 66, www.sentosagolf.com

she now holds the number to beat on both the LPGA and PGA Tours. Against an absolutely stellar field Ko picked up where she had left off in 2021 and with the major season right around the corner the Korean looks very likely to add to her two wins in the big ones from 2019. For Chun it was a welcome return to her best form, and it was still some effort as she was struggling with neck spams for most of the week. “I almost thought I was going to withdraw on Thursday because on No. 11, it really hurt. And then the pain was really sharp. I thought because my game was going up and it's on the right way, then I can try to get some rest and then physio. So I took Advil (painkillers) and did half swings.I really like Singapore, it is one of my favourite countries and I love to play at Sentosa. The greenkeepers did a great job and I really enjoyed rolling the ball on the greens this week.” Minjee Lee, who tied for second, shot the low round of the week 13

on Sunday with an 11-birdie 63, nine of them coming in the last 12 holes, and the Aussie star loved having the crowds back out at Sentosa. “I think just everybody's itching to get out. We really lacked that human touch part of being a professional athlete and the galleries. I think it's really nice. That way we can give a little bit of us to them; they can give a little bit of them to us.” For much of the final day it looked like Thailand’s Atthaya Thitikul might claim her first win on the LPGA Tour. The 19-year-old, who topped the Ladies European Tour money list in 2021, began her final round like a train with five birdies in her first six holes before being overhauled and dropping into a tie for fourth. “It’s always an amazing feeling to be back here in Singapore. It feels like home, the people, the food and I definitely want to come back here again for many more years.” Danielle Kang was one of the big names in the field and she

has spent her winter at the UFC Performance Institute building up her weight and strength for the new season, something that has paid dividends with her win in the opening tournament of the season. But the American, who would tie for 9th, nearly ran out of balls in her second round. “I kept hitting a lot of golf balls in the hazard. I only had one golf ball left. But I saved pars from the fairway with a 5-wood and a wedge. I also 4-putted! I love the diversity in this country. It's not just the golf but the people. Everyone here is so friendly, and the culture here I love. We're on Orchard Road and you can shop or go wherever you want to go. It's pretty cool.” For Jin Young Ko her plan is now, rather ominously, to keep working on the swing after her very successful jaunt to Singapore. “It was hot, great hotel, great shopping area, great food. I had a lot of din tai fung and crabs and it was fun. Now I need to practise, I’m a perfectionist.”

GUEST COLUMN

Su-Ann Heng Kasem Ex-Professional Golfer, Golf Commentator and Gold 90.5 FM Radio Presenter

T

he HSBC Women’s World Championship (HWWC) is one of my favourite events on the LPGA calendar. I am a little biased because it’s on my home soil here in Singapore and it is such a treat to be able to watch the best female golfers play on a course that I am familiar with. To have the world's best come to Sentosa and to be able to watch the likes of Lydia Ko, Danielle Kang and Minjee Lee really is something special. It is also, apart from the Majors, one of the strongest fields in women’s golf and we also get to watch our local qualifiers go up against the LPGA players which is so important in growing the game here.

My personal favourite holes are the 4th, and the view that it offers, the 12th due to its toughness and the 18th. We’ve seen so much drama over the closing stretch throughout the years and it really brings out the best in players that week. The course is always immaculate, and, with the views of our beautiful city, it makes it the perfect course to host such a huge tournament.

Singapore is unique as we are such a metropolitan city but we still manage to keep so much greenery, so it makes it such a stunning destination and you get the best of both worlds. We are so diverse in culture and food, which is absolutely amazing, and you can experience so much here. There are so many great things you can do on the island – I particularly love the bungee jump, the aquarium and Tanjong Beach Club. And, if you get to play at Sentosa, play both The Serapong and The Tanjong, two Championship courses that are so different in characteristics and styles! Hosting high-profile golf tournaments have done so much for growing the game of golf here. Giving local talents the opportunities to compete alongside these top players is an opportunity that’s hard to come by but, also having an event like the HWWC in Singapore, it allows golfers of all levels to watch some live golf and perhaps encourage more people to pick up the sport.

The Tanjong is such a great test. It demands accuracy off the tee, strong iron play to find the right sections of the large putting surfaces and an ability to read those greens. The par 3s are long with tricky greens, the par 5s are very much risk-reward holes and the last three holes make it such a great finish.

GAME ON! Exciting Toro Partnership To Boost Sustainability Efforts

W

hat a pleasure it has been to host one of the strongest fields in women’s golf at the HSBC Women’s World Championship. To witness such inspirational talent battle it out on the beautiful Tanjong was an unforgettable week for the Club – and there was more to celebrate off the course as well, as we announced a 10-year partnership with The Toro Company and local Toro distributor, Jebsen & Jessen. Toro is a leading worldwide provider of innovative solutions for the outdoor environment, including turf and landscape maintenance and irrigation solutions. Amongst Toro’s many areas of expertise, the company boasts a long history in golf course care. In fact, our partnership comes as Toro celebrates its 108th year in the golf industry. This announcement marks the latest development in a long-standing

relationship between the Club, Jebsen & Jessen and Toro. We have utilized Toro’s proven technology for more than two decades, including support during globally televised events like the SMBC Singapore Open and HSBC Women’s World Championship.

Promoting Sustainability The agreement includes a complete fleet of brand new Toro golf course maintenance equipment and irrigation products, as well as battery-powered landscape tools – all focused on reducing emissions and promoting overall sustainability. “We’re looking forward to bringing our fleet into the future with Toro and Jebsen & Jessen,” said Andrew Johnston, General Manager and Director of Agronomy at Sentosa Golf Club. “It’s important to us to work with partners that support our mission to consistently deliver a world-class playing experience. and we know we can expect that level of excellence from Toro.” The Club has 36 holes of Toro irrigation, including Toro INFINITY Sprinklers and a Lynx System with satellite technology, in addition to Toro Turf Guard wireless soil monitoring to provide in-field data. The Lynx system provides precision water management with features designed to help reduce water usage. Toro’s hybrid and electric equipment and water-saving irrigation systems align with the Club’s dedication to sustainability. Initiatives to manage our carbon, water and waste footprint will be boosted by the partnership as we look become the world’s first carbon-neutral golf club in 2022.

Race to Zero The partnership agreement also includes support from the technical service team at Jebsen & Jessen and regional support from The Toro Company. An on-site Toro service manager will be based at the Club, as Toro aim to create a state-of-theart Centre of Excellence at Sentosa Golf Club to support and educate regional clients and staff on the latest products, technology and service developments. With this initiative, Toro joins The R&A and the Asian Tour in making Sentosa their key base in the region. “This is an historic opportunity for The Toro Company to partner with one of the most respected clubs in Asia and support their mission of carbon neutrality,” said Richard Walne, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Toro Company. “I’ve

witnessed Sentosa Golf Club’s passion for the environment firsthand, and it’s an exciting time to work with them on implementing the latest Toro innovations and technology.” “Sustainability is not a new concept for The Toro Company,” Walne continued. “It’s deeply rooted in our purpose to provide customers with real solutions that are both environmentally responsible and operationally sustainable. “As the first industrial conglomerate in Southeast Asia to achieve full carbon neutrality, we take great pride in the fact that we share a common mission with Sentosa and Toro in reducing our impact on the environment,” added Philipp Hoffmann, Regional Director of Jebsen & Jessen Technology Turf & Irrigation. NEWS FROM SENTOSA ISLAND

TAKE AN AMAZING TOUR WITH SENTOSIGHTS

Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) has kicked off celebrations for the Island’s Golden Jubilee with the launch of SentoSights tours and over 50 new experiences. Featuring more than ten unique guided tours, SentoSights is an initiative under the Sustainable Sentosa strategic roadmap and will showcase the Island’s authentic offerings while helping guests gain insights into the importance of sustainability and conservation programmes.

FORT SILOSO PUT FORWARD AS NATIONAL MONUMENT What a perfect time to take a tour of Fort Siloso, which has been put forward to be gazetted a National Monument. Fort Siloso is the best-preserved 19th century fort in Singapore and serves as an important site to mark the nation’s war years. The fort was constructed in 1878 and was part of a set of strategic coastal fortifications set up as Singapore grew in importance as a trading port in the late 19th century. Its guns fired at Japanese troops in the west of Singapore during World War II and destroyed the oil refineries at nearby Pulau Bukom and Pulau Sebarok to prevent the Japanese from using them as a resource, said National Heritage Board on its Roots.gov.sg portal.

The tours will explore Sentosa’s rich history and many natural wonders, taking in the likes of Fort Siloso, Fort Serapong, Tanjong Rimau, and the Imbiah and Coastal Trails. In addition, there will be game-based exploration, magic demonstrations, and night time forest walks – plus there’s the opportunity to explore the nearby Southern Islands. With more tours planned, there’s plenty to look forward to this coming year.

GRAB YOURSELF A FREE CABLE CAR RIDE!

SGC BACKS PUB'S LIGHT UP INITIATIVE Sentosa Golf Club will once again be taking part in the Public Utility Board’s Blue Light Up to raise awareness for water sustainability. World Water Day is held annually on 22 March, a day designated by the United Nations as a reminder that water is a critical resource that should be cherished and protected. Last year, the city skyline turned into a sea of blue with 44 landmarks and buildings – including the ArtScience Museum, the Esplanade, Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands and the Singapore Flyer – creating a wonderful display. We look forward to playing our part and helping, quite literally, to shine a light on such an important matter.

The only thing better than a cable car ride is a free cable car ride. With this fantastic deal, which runs until 31 March 2022, you can hop on the Sentosa Line for free when you purchase tickets to HeadRock VR, Madame Tussauds Singapore, Trickeye @ Southside and Sentosa 4D AdventureLand online. Please note, the promotion is valid for locals only, and verification will be required before admission.

Takeaway Kang used to whip the club away a little bit on the inside, which meant that she’d lose a lot of power and distance. When you’re off swing plane like that, you end up having to re-route the club on the downswing. The whole swing becomes inefficient. Now, as you can see, she creates more width. It’s what you’d call a ‘one piece takeaway’, so there’s this lovely connection with the club and the triangle made up between the arms and the shoulders. From here, she produces a nice wide arc on the way back. She keeps the club outside her hands and it’s beautifully square, which is vital. Everything is more efficient. Before, she’d get stuck and she had a tendency to hit the odd big hook. She doesn’t have problems having to re-route the club; rather, she can just slot the club back into position pre impact. She’s been working on her strength, too, which has helped her base to become a lot more stable.

Follow Through How do you get into this wonderful finish position? Well, it’s the result of everything beforehand working really well. If a player is not finishing in balance and in control then they’ve probably done something on the way down, which throws them offline. Kang used to hop on the way through the ball, and that would sometimes throw her off balance at the end. This really emphasises the importance of setting sound fundamentals. The foundations of the golf swing are really solid, therefore the positions in her backswing, downswing and transition through the ball are also solid. Combined with the fitness work she’s done to stabilise her impact position, she’s been able to dramatically improve both her distance and accuracy stats off the tee.

Top of backswing It’s evident here just how much coil she’s able to create. Again, much of this is down to her stable base and wide stance. She used to move her lower half around a bit more, which made her a bit unstable at the top. Now, she’s packing a lot of power at the top of that backswing. The upper body has coiled really efficiently on top of her stable base – and you can see the strength she has in her legs. It’s that saying we often here, ‘power comes from the ground up’. She also maintains her posture angles really well at the top of the swing, and you can only really do that from a very strong, stable base. Often people will say ‘keep your head still’, but if you do that, your weight doesn’t shift. With Kang there’s that natural weight transfer – lots of power on the back foot, which she then moves really efficiently onto her front. It sounds simple, but not all players are able to do this quite so effectively.
