CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE
Dear Fellow Members,
I trust this message finds you in good health and high spirits.
As we continue to enjoy the remarkable golfing experiences that our beloved Club offers, I want to take this opportunity to reflect upon the core values that define not only the game but also our sense of community. The topic of Golf Etiquette is a fundamental aspect that shapes our interactions on and off the course.
Golf Etiquette, is more than just a set of guidelines. It embodies respect, sportsmanship, and camaraderie – values that underscore the very essence of golf. Our world class golf courses, The Serapong and The Tanjong, have a rich history and it is our collective responsibility to ensure they are preserved for generations to come. By adhering to proper etiquette, we contribute to the legacy of this sport and uphold the spirit of the game.
BUNKER RAKING
One crucial aspect of Golf Etiquette that deserves and has been accorded special attention in the recent weeks is bunker raking. The act of meticulously raking bunkers after one's shot is not merely a task; it is a symbol of the respect we hold for the game, the course, and fellow golfers.
Properly raked bunkers not only enhance the playing experience, but also reflect the care we have for our surroundings. It is a simple gesture that carries profound significance – a mark of our commitment to maintaining the integrity of the course and the pleasure of the game.
I would like to take this opportunity to emphasize the importance of looking after our golf courses. Each divot replaced, each pitch mark repaired,
and each bunker raked contributes to their vitality. Let us continue to be the custodians of these remarkable spaces and exhibit the true spirit of Sentosa Golf Club.
I am pleased to inform you that our recent efforts to educate golfers about bunker raking have yielded positive results. Our new bunker raking policy, which came into effect on 21 August, is the culmination of weeks of dedicated education while golfers were out on the course. The response has been heartening, and I extend my appreciation to each Member who has embraced this change with enthusiasm. Your commitment to upholding our standards and enhancing the overall golfing experience is commendable.
Let us always remember that Golf Etiquette is not just a set of rules; it is a tribute to the essence of our sport. Bunker raking, among its various aspects, is a visual embodiment of our respect for the game and our course.
Together, let us continue to exhibit the highest standards of conduct both on and off the greens, enriching our experiences and preserving the Club legacy we proudly share.
I wish you all good golfing.

GM’S MESSAGE
Dear Club Members,
As we move forward into another exciting phase of the year, I am delighted to share some exciting developments and plans for upgrades and repairs to our beloved golf courses. Our commitment to maintaining excellence and enhancing your playing experience remains unwavering.
DRAINAGE INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENT:
One of the significant projects, we have slated for the near future involves the enhancement of The Tanjong’s drainage infrastructure. We have identified a major challenge caused by the roots of the large Ficus tree around the 13th green.
This has compromised some essential drainage infrastructure, affecting the bunkers at the 13th green, the cart path at the 14th tees, and the catch basins of the 13th and 14th fairways. To address this issue, we plan to install new drainage systems that will not only rectify the problem, but also bypass the compromised pipes affected by this Ficus tree.
BUNKER ACCESS ON THE SERAPONG HOLE 6:
To improve the experience of getting in and out of the bunker near the rock formation known as "Dragon's Tooth" on Hole 6, we plan to install bunker noses. This not only enhances safety, but also aligns with our ongoing efforts to make the course more golfer and senior-friendly.
THE SERAPONG HOLE 10:
We have also identified an opportunity to enhance The Serapong 10th hole by adding kerbs after the tees, extending them into the fairway. These kerbs would contribute to better course management and add to The Serapong’s overall aesthetic appeal.
NEW FAIRWAY BUNKER ON THE TANJONG HOLE 18:
Lastly, we are excited to introduce a new fairway bunker on the left side of the first landing area on Hole 18. This strategic addition will soon test your skills while maintaining the course's challenge and beauty.
These projects are not only aimed at keeping our world class golf courses in top-notch condition, but also enhance their strategic elements. Our dedicated team is committed to ensuring that every improvement aligns with the core values of our Club and enhances your overall playing experience.
We understand that they may cause minor disruptions, but rest assured that we will strive to minimize any inconvenience during the implementation process. Your understanding and patience during these improvements is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to sharing a better-than-ever golfing experience with you all. Stay tuned for more updates as these exciting projects unfold.

OGLETREE CONTINUES IMPRESSIVE FORM
Andy Ogletree chalked up his second win on the 2023 Asian Tour after running away with the International Series England event at Close House by seven shots. The American is now well on his way to securing automatic qualification to the ultra-lucrative LIV Golf League for 2024. Ian Poulter also posted a closing 64 to take second spot while his 19-year-old son, Luke, who plays at the University of Florida finished on level par in a tie for 22nd. “I know that my game matches up with those (LIV Golf) guys very well. Twenty-two of them were here and I won by seven, I don’t think I could hit it much better than I did this week,” said Ogletree, who banked US$360,000.
ASIAN GOLF PARTICIPATION ON THE UP
According to new research by the R&A, golf participation is continuing to grow with Asia among one of its key markets. The headline figure showed that an additional 10 million adult golfers are playing the sport around the world since 2016 and there are now 39.6 million on-course golfers. For the first time, the data collectively measured The R&A’s affiliated markets in Asia, Africa, Canada, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Oceania. The top three adult golfer markets are Japan (8.1 million), Canada (5.6 million) and Korea (5.4 million) with Asia being the leading region with an adult engagement of 22.5 million.
VU DOES IT AGAIN
Lilia Vu moved to the top of the women's world rankings with a six-shot win at the AIG Women's Open for her second major victory of 2023. The 25-year-old Californian kept out of the heather at Walton Heath to see off home hope Charley Hull – the English star moved to within three shots when she holed out for an eagle at the 11th, but Vu was rock solid coming down the stretch and a birdie at the last gave her a 67 and runaway triumph.
TITLEIST UNVEIL STRIKING IRONS
The next generation of T-Series irons are now out, and they are as aesthetically pleasing as they are brilliant in their performance. There are four models in the new range; the T100 is the modern tour iron, the T150 is the faster tour iron, the T200 is the player's distance iron and the T350 is the ultimate game-improvement iron. Interestingly approximately 80 per cent of the Titleist stars on the PGA Tour are playing blended sets of at least two Titleist iron models which outlines the importance of custom fitting through the bag.

FAIRWAYS TO GLORY
THE PRESTIGE OF THE SOLHEIM
CUP
Both teams will feature Major Champions and some of the best young talent in the world as the 18th Solheim Cup opens its doors in Spain at Finca Cortesin. This year’s Solheim Cup could result in something that has never happened before with Europe going for a third straight win. In the early days of the competition, the United States ruled the roost, winning eight of the first 11 matches but Europe have now won four of the last six meetings and we’re still waiting for our first tie.
The Captains for the matches in Spain are no strangers to Sentosa Golf Club with Suzann Pettersen leading Europe for the first time, likewise Stacy Lewis. Both are relatively youthful leaders; the Norwegian is 42 while Lewis is still only 38. Ten years ago, the American
was victorious at the HSBC Women’s World Championship on The Serapong, which included a moment of brilliance at the par-5 7th hole where her hybrid from a fairway bunker would finish just inches away from the hole.
“That was probably the best shot I ever hit,” the American would comment after her round.
The win would be the precursor to two more that year, including a second Major at St Andrews, and a move to the World No. 1 spot. Pettersen, likewise, is a two-time Major winner.
This year’s Major season saw Lilia Vu double up which makes her the first female player to win two Majors in the same year since Jin Young Ko in 2019, and the first American woman since Juli Inkster in 1999. Her ascent has been so rapid that she’s only played once at Sentosa – she would
remarkably shoot four rounds of 70 to tie for 14th this year – and she will be joined by Nelly Korda, Danielle Kang and Allisen Corpuz, all of whom finished in the top five on The Tanjong in March.
Corpuz is the reigning US Open Champion and another who has only once featured at Sentosa. Indeed, her victory at Pebble Beach, as the women’s game broke new ground by visiting this corner of California for the first time, was her first on tour. But they will all be overshadowed, for the initial limelight at least, as Rose Zhang makes her Solheim debut. The 20-year-old was dominating the amateur game until May of this year when she decided to turn professional – in June she won her first tournament as a professional and she has now played four Majors as a professional and she already has three top 10s.

For the past two years Zhang has featured on the American Curtis Cup side where she contributed seven points from a possible nine in two crushing triumphs and she may well again team up with Corpuz again over the first two days.
Pettersen will have three rookies in her ranks, all who are in name only really. Linn Grant, another to tie for 14th at her Sentosa debut in March, will no doubt be one of the star shows at Finca Cortesin and she will be joined by fellow Swede Maja Stark and Scotland’s Gemma Dryburgh.
In total, there are five Swedes in the European line-ups with Caroline Hedwall coming back into the side and Anna Nordqvist, who will be making her eighth appearance, enjoying a dual role of vicecaptain and player.
Europe will again fancy their chances not least because they have a 2023 Major winner of their own in Celine Boutier as well as the likes of Charley Hull and Leona Maguire. Boutier, who won this year’s Evian Championship by six strokes, has only lost once in seven matches while Maguire was outstanding in Ohio. The Irish star came into the matches as a rookie and emerged from the 15-13 victory with four and a half points – she was the only player to play in all five series of matches.
The bookmakers are unable to split the two sides and there will be no shortage of star talent on show in Spain. Should Europe pull it off they would reduce the overall scoreline to 10-8, something that would be unthinkable a few years ago. It should be a cracker.

Henrik DREIER
Director New Business Fields, Porsche Asia Pacific
In May 2021, Sentosa Golf Club further expanded its sustainability agenda by announcing a new partnership with Porsche Asia Pacific. Five new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations were installed as part of the Porsche Destination Charging network –an initiative launched to support the introduction of the German sports car brand’s first all-electric sports car, the Porsche Taycan.
The aim was to partner with luxury lifestyle locations to provide Porsche owners with charging opportunities outside their home, and to foster increased adoption of EVs – crucially, all Destination Charging sites are also open to EVs from other brands.
When we began the programme, there were virtually no EVs on the road. We were fortunate
to have the support of Andrew Johnston and Sylvester Yeo, who were familiar with the concept of charging EVs due to the Club’s many electric buggies. They managed to secure approval for the project, which allowed Porsche to successfully implement the charging site in 2021, becoming only the second Destination Charging location in Singapore.
I'm delighted to add that Sentosa Golf Club was the first golf club in Singapore and the Southeast Asia region to join the Porsche Destination Charging network, living up to its title as the World’s Best Eco-Friendly Golf Facility. Club members can recharge their vehicles for free whilst playing golf or enjoying the many facilities the Club has to offer.
Despite the initial apprehension, I'm glad to report the five 11kW
chargers are now frequently used and appreciated by Club members. In fact, Porsche and Sentosa Golf Club are currently planning to further expand the availability of charging stations in line with increasing demand. In the first half of 2023, EVs made up more than 14 per cent of new car registrations. We now see many EVs on the road and Porsche is proud to have the largest manufacturer-branded charging network in Singapore with more than 100 charging points. This partnership complements both Porsche and Sentosa Island’s ambitions to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. Sentosa Golf Club also continues to be a strong partner for Porsche, one reason being the Club’s comprehensive sustainability concept: GAME ON. By the end of this decade, Porsche aims to have more than 80 per cent of all its cars delivered as electric. We are proud to be pioneers in the field of electromobility, together with Sentosa Golf Club, to help achieve Singapore’s vision towards a greener future.

NEW PLAYBOOK AIMS TO HELP SENTOSA ELIMINATE SINGLE USE DISPOSABLES
Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) has launched the Sentosa Playbook for Reducing Disposables as it looks to ramp up its drive to reduce the use of plastic disposables across the island, and, ultimately, achieve the main objective of becoming disposable-free.
In collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature Singapore (WWF-Singapore), the Playbook is the first precinct-level disposables guidebook in Singapore that provides guidance to the island’s businesses to help them with best practices, monitor progress and implement new sustainable technologies.
On average, one to three bottles are used by each person weekly. When lined from end-to-end, bottles used within a day in Singapore would stretch for 300km, six times the length of Singapore. To reduce the use of plastic disposables, members of the Sentosa Carbon Neutral Network (SCNN) – which include hotels, attractions and F&B operators – have committed to remove single-use plastic bottled water from guestrooms, dine-in, takeaway, and events by the end of 2023.
Becoming disposable free will require the collective effort of all island businesses, but Thien Kwee Eng, CEO, SDC, is optimistic about the rollout of the Playbook and the effect it can start to have.
“I am encouraged by the commitment from the many island businesses in participating to shape the Playbook and to take concrete steps toward reducing their
disposables footprint,” she said.
“It is my hope that together as One Sentosa, we continue to make headway in these actions and move closer towards becoming a zerowaste Sentosa.”
A number of SCNN members have already started to take measures to eliminate single-use plastic, and it’s hoped that each one will encourage other businesses to innovate and find ways to reduce their own waste.
Capella Singapore eliminated singleuse plastic bottled water several years ago and removed plastic packaging from in-room amenities such as dental kits and laundry bags. Elsewhere, Baristart Coffee’s appenabled container programme allows patrons to loan containers for free and returning them for cleaning and sanitisation within 30 days, while here at Sentosa Golf Club single-use
plastic bottled water was removed in 2018.
Although the Playbook is a positive step in the battle to protect Sentosa’s environment and coastal habitat, current statistics paint a bleak picture and highlight the need for businesses to get on board as soon as possible.
According to WWF-Singapore, an estimated 900 million kg of plastic is discarded every year in Singapore, and a report by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation revealed that only 14% of plastic packaging waste is recycled globally. Meanwhile, the National Environmental Agency reported that the plastic recycling rate in 2020 was only 4%. This means that in Singapore, the majority of plastic disposables are incinerated.
Based on the National Environmental Agency’s report, disposables alone contributed about 200,000 tonnes
NEWS FROM SENTOSA ISLAND
18 sentosagolfclub @sentosagolfclub @sentosagolfclub SentosaGolfClub SENTOSA GOLF CLUB MAGAZINE
Sentosa Island has created a new playbook to help remove all disposable plastics from use by the end of the year
of waste in 2020, which is about 11% of domestic waste contribution, the equivalent of 400 Olympic sized swimming pools. According to an island-wide study conducted in 2021, Sentosa generated approximately 22,800 tonnes of waste annually, with an estimated 8% to 11% of the total comprising disposables. This adds to the limited national landfill capacity.
There is still more that can be done to reduce the impact of waste generated by disposables, but the Playbook will hopefully act as a catalyst for collective action across public and private sectors, and help the island move one step closer towards being zero-waste.

On average, one to three bottles are used by each person weekly. When lined from end-to-end, bottles used within a day in Singapore would stretch for 300km, six times the length of Singapore.
Businesses around the Island are implementing new methods, with Baristart Coffee loaning containers to consumers for use over a 30 day period
All single-use plastics were removed from the golf courses at Sentosa Golf Club in 2018, with water stations installed instead

LIV Golf Pledge To Give Back Through Golf
LIV Golf have announced a new initiative 'Potential, Unleashed' as part of their new social impact and sustainability strategy. The focus, primarily, is to positively impact the lives of 5.4 million young people across the world and become climate positive by 2030.
To do this they have put together four programmes – LIV To Learn, LIV Green, Transform The Game and The Way We LIV – that will help support young lives and refugees, enhance the diversity of golf and protect the planet.
LIV To Learn will increase opportunities for education, employment or training for youngsters, in particular refugees or internally displaced people, who are not in work, training or school – a stark stat is that nearly 400,000,000 youngsters around the world are not in school in work.
LIV Green will focus on reducing the environmental impact of its events and minimising their footprint as well as investing in climate-related research and technology. Evidence of this will come through innovation challenges that will be hosted in the run-up to LIV events to bolster collaboration between the golf sector and beyond.
Ninety-two per cent of the golf industry are male with 67 per cent white so the aim will be for better access to playing and working in the game for women and girls and for those from ethnically diverse communities. Transform The Game will look at providing better access to play and work in golf for women and girls and for those from ethnically diverse communities. The league will deliver paid training and employment opportunities
to encourage this part of the programme.
The Way We LIV will look at helping the organisation become world class in all aspects and how it's run overall, with a big focus on sustainability. So, from a day-to-day basis to sustainable event delivery and supporting diversity, equity and inclusion the aim is help change the world through golf.
“We believe golf has incredible potential to create significant positive social and environmental change, potential that LIV is focused on unlocking. Our vision is a bold one, but we are committed to working in collaboration with our fans, teams, players and partners to give back to our communities and our planet and use the game of golf that we love to bring positive change.” said Greg Norman, LIV Golf Commissioner and CEO.

FINE-TUNING PERFORMANCE:
The Quest for Ideal Equipment
Titleist TSR4 Driver
I grew up using smaller driver heads. The problem is, of course, smaller heads tend to offer less forgiveness. However, the new Titleist TSR4 is perfect for me as it’s the most forgiving driver in the market in that size, giving me all the benefits of lower spin and great ball speed (during my fitting it was the only head I could hit over 300 yards,) but with an element of assistance for when I don’t find the middle of the clubface.
Remember, a thorough club fitting can help you find your best driver, too. Visit the front desk to book your complimentary member club fitting with Titleist.

Like my driver, I have always preferred more traditional heads. What I particularly like about these irons is the extra distance and forgiveness they give me versus a classic blade style head. With this model, I get the best balance of distance, control and forgiveness of any iron in the market. If you’re to get the most out of your game, my advice is to get custom fit, especially as we have the Southeast Asia premier Titleist Fitting centre right here at Sentosa.

My go to putter is a Scotty Cameron Circle T T2. It’s unique as it has a sound slot and a welded long neck closer to the centre of the head to minimize toe hang. The head is 350g and is set at my preferred length of 34”, which comes out at a swing weight of D7. I find this optimal for our regular green speeds. However, I have a few more on rotation depending on where I play and what the green speeds are.
If the greens are running really quickly (11+), I’ll use my carbon steel Scotty Cameron CT circa 62’, originally made for Greg Norman. This head is only 332g, and the swing weight is only C9. The carbon steel makes for a really soft feel.
If I’m playing somewhere where the green speeds are nine or below, then I’ll switch to a heavier putter – my Scotty Cameron CT X6. With interchangeable weights, I can change the swing weight easily without having to change the length. I typically keep this at E5.
The putter you use is such a personal choice. We’re always here to look at your individual stroke and offer recommendations, so be sure to come and speak to us.
This glove gives me the ultimate feel. Made from finest Cabretta leather, it’s ultra-thin yet breathable and offers a great fit. It’s crucial that you wear the right size glove. You’d be surprised how many people wear one that’s either too small or too large – and that can really have an impact on your game.
My laser is my own personal caddie, helping to save shots wherever I play. I use the ultra-light but super accurate and responsive R2G Mate1 Laser rangefinder. It can churn distances out in 0.05 seconds. It also contains a rechargeable lithium-ion battery good for thousands of measurements before needing to be recharged via USB.

NICKLAUS CHIAM 18 Holes With…
In the latest issue of 18 Holes With…we sat down with one of Sentosa Golf Club’s sponsored professionals, Nicklaus Chiam, to discuss his goals for the remainder of the 2023 season, who he believes is the GOAT of golf, and what he likes to do away from the sport…
How did you get into playing golf?
I got into golf when I was 4 years old, and my dad took me to the range. I was playing around with his clubs, and he thought I was interested so bought me a junior set.
Did you have a golfing idol growing up?
For me, it was Tiger Woods. I was fortunate enough to watch him play growing up.
What has been the best moment in your career so far?
Shooting a career low of 62 in 2022 is still the best moment.
How does it feel to be sponsored by Sentosa Golf Club?
I definitely feel very fortunate to be part of the Sentosa Golf Club family and hope that I can give back or help whenever I can.
What is your preferred course at the Club?
Both courses are great, but I think Serapong is my preferred choice.
What is your favourite hole on the course?
I think Hole 5 is one of my favourites on The Serapong.
What is your favourite career highlight so far?
Finishing Top 15 in one of
the China Tour events is a career highlight for me so far.
What are your goals for the remainder of 2023?
My goal is to do my best and have a stroke average of 71 or better
for my remaining tournament rounds.
What is your favourite golf course in the world?
I like my college home course, Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
If you could play a round of
golf with any one person, past or present, who would you choose?
Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods.
Who is the greatest golfer of all time?
The GOAT is still Tiger.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career?
I think it’s the physical demands and mental challenges that we put ourselves through. Sometimes we are on the road for four weeks in a row, playing tournament after tournament.
How would you describe Sentosa Golf Club in three words?
ABSOLUTELY amazing place.
What is your favourite thing about Singapore? The variety of food available!
If you could play one other sport professionally, what would it be?
I think bowling would be the next choice.
