Local: Brownfield, ME Ecologically Sound: USDA Organic At Grandy Oats, we believe in sustainable business practices. Being an organic producer and using organically grown ingredients is one of the best ways we can achieve this goal. Since we became certified organic in 2004, our business has grown tremendously and unlike many businesses, we know our growth has not come at the expense of our planet’s resources. The land used to cultivate ingredients made for our products has no chemical fertilizers and is harvested by farmers who did not have to handle chemicals. We believe in our own way, we’re making our world a better place simply by using food that was grown in a sustainable way. PFG Item #

Local: Skowhegan, ME Randall & Audrey Gifford shared a common love of family and life’s simple pleasures that remain at the core of the family business today. They also grew up in the dairy business, and from early on were steeped in the tradition of old-fashioned ice cream. After running a small milk business and ice cream shop for 17 years, they pulled up roots and moved to Randall’s home state of Maine… bringing their passion for ice cream with them. They purchased a small dairy in Farmington in 1971 and three years later purchased another in Skowhegan, where Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream plant remains today. Fast forward to 2014, today Gifford’s sells 1.7 million gallons of ice cream each year. The company offers 100 unique flavors of ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbets & sorbets.
When you have five generations of ice cream making history behind every flavor, it’s no wonder that Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream has received its share of national and international awards. But perhaps most importantly, Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream brings you back to the carefree days when your only worry was how many days until summer. PFG Item #

What is Organic? Organic is a labeling term that indicated that the food or other agricultural product has been processed through approved methods. These methods integrate cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity.
How Are Organic Products Overseen? The National Organic Program regulates all organic crops, livestock, and agricultural products certified to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) organic standards. Organic certification agencies inspect and verify that organic farmers, ranchers, distributors, processors, and traders are complying with the USDA organic regulations. USDA conducts audits and ensures that the more than 90 organic certification agencies operating around the world are properly certifying organic products. In addition, the USDA conducts investigations and conducts enforcement activities to ensure all products labeled as organic meet USDA organic regulations. In order to sell, label, or represent their products as organic, operations must follow all of the specifications set out by the USDA organic regulations.
Organic Standards The organic standards describe the specific requirements that must be verified by a UDSAaccredited certifying agency before products can be labeled USDA organic. Overall, organic operations must demonstrate that they are protecting natural resources, conserving biodiversity, and using only approved substances. Organic Crops. The USDA organic seal verifies that irradiation, sewage sludge, synthetic fertilizers, prohibited pesticides, and genetically modified organisms were not used. Organic Livestock. The USDA organic seal verifies that producers met animal health and welfare standards, did not use antibiotics or growth hormones, used 100% organic feed, and provided animals with access to the outdoors. Organic Multi-Ingredient Foods. The USDA organic seal verifies that the product has 95% or more certified organic content. For multi-ingredient products such as bread or soup, if the label claims that it is made with specified organic ingredients, you can be confident that those specific ingredients have been certified organic.
Organic Certification & Accreditation Currently, approximately 30,000 organic farms and processing facilities around the world are certified to the USDA organic standards. Their certification is managed by approximately 100 certifying agents located throughout the United States and around the world. Certification allows a farm or processing facility to sell, label, and represent their product as organic. Any operation in violation of the USDA organic regulations is subject to enforcement actions, which can include financial penalties or suspension/revocation of their organic certificate.
