Local: Prospect Harbor, ME Sustainable: Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Good Alternative MSC Certified Sustainable Bay Winds Maine Lobster is wild caught in the Gulf of Maine. To ensure and provide the highest quality, our lobster is harvested in a single days work. Our fleet is composed primarily of small vessels averaging 32 feet, which make day trips within 3 miles of shore. Each of our lobster boats are independently owned and managed by fisherman like Captain Chuck of the F/V Trial and Error in Orris Island, Maine (left) or Captain Alex of the F/V Jacob and Joshua in Chebeauge Island, Maine (right).
Lobster fishing is a way of life and often a family affair. On Orr's Island, Chuck has a mother, wife and 2 daughters that work at the local island restaurant (serving countless lobster rolls to locals and tourists alike.) This family involvement of several, if not all family members, in the business of lobster, can be witnessed among hundreds of ocean harbors along the eastern seaboard.
Generations of lobster fishermen are the norm in Maine. Alex’s license came from his great grandfather, when he was just 6 years old, and at the time it was an open fishery. Today with a waiting list for licenses, the Maine apprenticeship program allows children to bypass the list if they complete the program and apply for a license by age 18. Alex's two sons, age 12 and 15, are now in the program and also have their own lobster boat.
Our lobster harvesters still use a traditional method to fish lobster: traps attached to lines, set out on the ocean floor and harvested in to retrieve the catch. This method maintains the integrity of the seafloor by minimizing disruption. Our lobster meat is firm and dense with a wonderful sweet flavor distinctive of Maine. Try some today! Captain John and Sternman Victor, F/V Kristian Tessa, Bass Harbor Maine Tied up next to John’s boat in Bass Harbor, are his Dad’s boat and his brother’s boat. It’s a family of lobster fishermen, and John’s two year old son will most likely grow up to work alongside them.

Characteristics of the modern lobster boat are one of a round bottom, double-wedge hull, a single inboard gas or diesel engine. A small forward cabin and windshield provide shelter for the helmsman. Each has an open, decked cockpit and the length varies from 20-40 feet. Traditionally built of wood (cedar planking over oak frames), fiberglass hulls began to replace wood in the early 1960s.

Local: Monroe, NH Humane: Certified Humane Ecologically Sound: Certified B Corp The story of Nellie’s Cage-Free Eggs began in the late 1800’s at the Ward Family Farm in Monroe, New Hampshire, where Robert Ward grew up farming dairy cattle and hens. After World War II, Robert’s son Les returned home from distinguished service as a Navy Dive Bomber pilot, and decided to expand the egg farming business. He started with just a few hundred hens and kept growing; soon his brother-in-law Rodney Stanton joined him. Les and Rodney kept our farm going through good times and bad—but others weren’t so lucky. Beginning in the 1980s, industrial-scale egg producers cornered the market and forced most small egg farms out of business. PFG Item #

When Les passed the farm on to his daughter Carol, son-in-law Gerry Laflamme and Rodney’s son Peter Stanton, they led our farm down a different path – one that led away from factory-style farming. Instead of “going industrial,” we changed to supplying cage-free and organic eggs produced without antibiotics, hormones, pesticides, GMOs or animal byproducts. Later, we became the first Certified Humane egg farm in the country. You can know that you’ll always get a deliciously healthy, humanely raised egg that began on a small family farm. Today our business is healthy and growing—but we will never become a factory farm. We help other family farms thrive instead of swallowing them up. Gerry and Carol’s son Jesse Laflamme now runs our farm with the help of his dad—and he’s raised the bar even higher with his commitment to small-scale farming, organic foods, humane treatment of animals and conservation. Jesse and his wife Sandra love having their children help out at the farm. We’re proud of our family farm and hope you enjoy the fresh, wholesome eggs we produce!
Local: Greenfield, MA Ecologically Sound: USDA Organic 1% for the Planet Fair: Fair Trade Certified Our mission is to provide the highest quality raw and organic Kombucha products, while utilizing business practices that honor all of the earth’s interconnected systems, and promote healing and longevity for the people and the planet. Our intention is to create a new paradigm for the role of business in society. We are part of a burgeoning movement of companies who have committed ourselves to prioritizing human rights and the environment above profit and actively working for the benefit of all sentient beings. Kombucha is a living symbiotic colony of beneficial yeast and bacteria. The culture floats atop an infusion of tea and sugar, and through the natural process of fermentation, converts the sugar into organic acids and carbon dioxide. At the same time, it produces a variety of other compounds that are detoxifying and nutritious to the human body including gluconic, lactic and folic acids. The resultant mixture is high in B vitamins as well as an assortment of pro-biotics. PFG Item #

Fossil Farms started as a simple ostrich farm, first in Pennsylvania and now in Sussex County, New Jersey. From this modest beginning, a diversified, all natural meat distributor was born, selling game meats and exotic meats as well as specialty meats. Recognizing 12 years ago that selling only ostrich was a stretch, owners Lance and Todd Appelbaum slowly assembled a group of like-minded family farms – farms that adhere to the same strict standards Lance and Todd imposed on themselves at the farm to produce their all natural meat: no antibiotics, no growth hormones, humane living conditions and all-natural feed. Today, Fossil Farms is much more than ostrich and game meats.

If you’d prefer to buy meat that’s been certified for humane treatment — meaning an outside authority has audited the farm to make sure it follows certain animal husbandry practices — look for the labels below. They belong to the 4 U.S.-based organizations that certify meat exclusively for animal welfare. (FYI, not all humane farms choose to be humane certified.) Meat, dairy and eggs that feature the Certified Humane label come from animals that were never housed in cages, crates or tie stalls. Animals are given space to exhibit their natural behaviors (such as perching and dustbathing for laying hens and rooting for pigs) and adequate shelter and resting areas. Certified Humane is one of only two humane certifiers that require certain slaughter practices.
Meat, eggs, and dairy that feature the logo of Animal Welfare Approved come from animals that were raised primarily or completely outdoors, either on pasture or range. This is unique; other humane certifiers don’t have a pasture requirement (except for Steps 4 and 5 in the Global Animal Partnership (GAP) program). For this reason, AWA is considered to be the most rigorous certification program for animal welfare.
The GAP program differs from the other humane certifiers in that it offers 5 different certification levels — or steps — at which a farm can be certified. The higher steps (3, 4, and 5) mean that a farm provides a more natural and less stressful life for its animals. The lower steps (1 and 2) require a farm to provide betterthan-standard conditions, but they are closer to industrial agricultural practices.
