East Otter Tail County Fair boasts jam-packed schedule by Paul Schmitt

pschmitt@perhamfocus.com

County fairs are a tried and true summertime standard, and East Otter Tail County is no different. The fair will be held, as always, at the Perham Fairgrounds from Thursday, July 23 through Sunday, July 26. Each day of the fair is slated to be full of activities and entertainment for all ages. Every day in the park, there will be 4-H project demonstrations by members in the side tent, as well as a beer garden with bean bag games and beer pong each night with live musical entertainment on the stage. Plenty of food vendors will be scattered around the fairgrounds and the carnival to fill up hungry bellies. To see a variety of booths by various businesses and organizations, visitors can drop by the Exhibit Hall any time between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. (6 p.m. on Sunday). Of course, animal barns will be open throughout the weekend. The Children’s Barn will also be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day (6 p.m. on Sunday) with plenty of activities for youngsters to keep busy. 4 | Summer Scene june 2015

Thursday, July 23 – Military/Veterans Day & Daycare Day From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. there will be daycare activities and a tour of the fairgrounds for kids. Final entries for the scarecrow contest can also be made from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Paying respect to our nation, at 11 a.m., there will be a flagraising and color guard by the East Otter Tail Area VFWs and Boy Scouts, followed by the national anthem at 11:15 a.m. Visitors can get tropical at 3 p.m. with a performance by the Island Time Steel Drum Band in the park, and then trot over to the carnival, which opens at 5 p.m. Or, stop in at the tractor show while you’re near the park from 1-6 p.m., with a tractor parade at 6 p.m. Thursday night is wristband night at the fair, allowing fairgoers with purchased wristbands to ride almost every ride in the carnival for Thursday night only. Wristbands cost $18 in advance, and $20 on Thursday. At 7 p.m. in the grandstand is the famous L.A. Pig Race Show, full of sprinting porkers and audience interaction. The show costs $5 for those 13 or older, $3 for 6-12 year olds, and is free for kids 5 and under. Entertainment in the beer garden on Thursday is provided by “Off Duty” Tim Eggebraten, a Detroit Lakes police officer who sings and plays crowd-favorites on his acoustic guitar and harmonica, sometimes with a drum machine to back.

All proceeds directly benefit our programs. 802 JENNY AVE • PERHAM • 346-2131

Above: The carnival is open every day of the fair at varying times. Right: The modified tractor pull starts at 7 p.m. at the grandstand, but a more traditional antique tractor pull will begin at 5 p.m.

Friday, July 24 – Senior Citizen’s Day Fairgoers can catch a unique glass blowing demonstration by Fargo artist Jon Offutt at either 11 a.m., or hourly from 1-5 p.m. in the park. The carnival opens its gates at 1 p.m., just as senior citizen events are starting up at the same time in the park. If you’re looking for laughs with a side of music, the Tina and Lena Comedy Act will be performing two 45-minute backto-back shows in the park at 4:30 and 6 p.m. The duo integrates singing in harmony into their act. Tractors will rev their engines at the grandstand in the evening, with the antique tractor pull to start at 5 p.m., followed immediately by the modified tractor pull at 7 p.m. The pulls are one session, and spectators pay one price to see both. The cost is $10 for 13 and up, $5 for 6-12 year olds, and is free for kids 5 and under. Beer garden entertainment starts at 8 p.m., featuring a rocking show by local band 60 Cycle Hum. Saturday, July 25 – Kid’s Day Saturday kicks off early with a horse show in the horse arena at 8 a.m. At 10 a.m. in the park, visitors can catch a show of balloon artistry by Mandana, who will be offering free balloon twisting on the fairgrounds until 6 p.m. 6 | Summer Scene june 2015

If you missed him on Friday, you can still catch a Jon Offutt glass blowing demonstration in the park at the same times. The carnival opens at 12 p.m. on Saturday, but if thrills aren’t for you, the Irish band Poitin will be performing in the park from 1-4 p.m. For kids looking for some healthy competition, a tractor pedal pull, sponsored by New York Mills FFA will take place at 5 p.m. on the tar by the park. Royalty will even grace the fairgrounds at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., as Elvis Presley tribute artist Brad Boice impersonates “The King” in the park. Feeling a bit destructive? The demo derby kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Grandstand. The cost is $10 for those 13 and up, $5 for 6-12 year olds, and is free for kids 5 and under. For a double dose of 60 Cycle Hum, head over to the beer garden at 8 p.m., where the band will close the night once again.

Sunday, July 26 – Family Day Fairgoers can rise and shine for food hot off the griddle at the free-will offering pancake breakfast in the park from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Also starting at 8 a.m. is some equestrian fun, with horse training at the horse arena, followed by horse games. “Cowboy church” will be held at 10 a.m. at the Northwoods Harvest Barn. Cowpokes can then head over to the new barn area to play a round of cow pie bingo at 11 a.m. From 12-3 p.m., the Red Letter Band will jam out some country classics in the park, and the carnival opens at 1 p.m. Starting at 2:30 p.m. is a silent auction for a one-of-a-kind sculpture. Awards programs for the Century Farm Awards and the 4-H Awards will take place in the park at 4 and 5 p.m., respectively, and the fair will close at 6 p.m.

Calling all “Heroes of Hope” At the 2014 EOT Relay for Life, 85 survivors of cancer took the opening lap around the track to start the event. Friends, family and strangers alike gathered around to cheer the walkers along the way.

by Elizabeth Huwe

ehuwe@perhamfocus.com

On Friday, July 10 - residents of Perham and the surrounding area will gather at the Perham High School track to fight back against cancer. For the 20th year, the East Otter Tail County Relay for Life will be held in Perham, in order to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Although the group and associated teams host other events throughout the year, this relay is the EOT Relay’s biggest night. At the end of the 2014 fundraising season, the relay annihilated its goal of raising $93,000 – and cleared the $100,000 mark. The 2015 goal is $105,000. Activities for the relay will begin at 5:30 p.m., at the track near the Perham Area Community Center. Bidding will begin for the silent auction items. During this time, there will also be concessions, massages, haircuts and 8 | Summer Scene june 2015

Luminaries, which honor someone who is fighting cancer or fought it at one time, will ring the track as team members walk all through the night.

The 2015 relay will mark the 20th event for the East Otter Tail County Relay for Life. Funds raised will go to the American Cancer Society, “the official sponsor of birthdays.”

“wacky hair” offered for attendees – the proceeds from these will go back to the relay. An educational scavenger hunt will also be held, along with various events at team campsites. The relay ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. with an opening and the Survivor’s Lap. During this time, the 2015 honorary co-chairs, Laurine Brauckmann and Larry Wankel, will both speak about their experiences battling cancer. At the 2014 relay, a record-breaking 85 cancer survivors, the young and those who are still young at heart, joined to take the first lap around the track. For 2015, EOT Relay Chairperson Lisa Peterson said she hopes at least as many (if not more) survivors participate. After the opening lap, the side and “Fight Back” activities will resume until 9 p.m. At about 9:15 p.m., the Luminaria Ceremony and luminary lighting will begin. After the luminaries have been lit, members of the participating relay teams will start making their laps around the track. “Teams will be on the track throughout the night,” Peterson explained, and the luminaries will stay lit as well. “The public is encouraged to come out to the track for our ceremonies, activities, or at any time of the night,” she said. The teams will end their walking or running in the early hours of Saturday, July 11.

“We really want people to come out to our event,” Peterson said. “It’s not much of a party if we don’t have lots of guests.” For those who are interested in contributing with the event, but cannot be on a team, Peterson said help is welcome for setting up luminaries at 2 p.m. on Friday or for assisting with cleanup at 6:15 a.m. Saturday. Relay events will also be held throughout the week leading up to Friday night. The week before the relay, businesses and individuals in and around Perham

will be encouraged to help “paint the town purple,” by decorating their storefronts or homes with the color used to promote cancer awareness. A survivor’s dinner will also be held on Monday, July 6. For cancer survivors who have not received an invite to the dinner, call Ruth or LeRoy Wegscheid at 218-367-2571 to get on the list. For more information about the East Otter Tail County Relay for Life, visit their Facebook page, call Lisa Peterson at 346-4747 or visit PerhamFocus.com.

During 2014, the East Otter Tail County Relay for Life demolished their fundraising goal of $93,000 – and collected more than $100,000 to help fund cancer research, education, patient services and more.

Back again by popular demand will be the bed races. Outfits are encouraged for the bed races, as everyone involved has a great time watching.

Skedaddlin’ on down to Dent Daze by Eric Hendrickx

ehendrickx@perhamfocus.com

You won’t have to wait until ‘high noon’ to kick off Dent Daze. Held on July 11, the theme for the festivities this year will be “Wild West.” Scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. sharp this year will be the Dent Daze 5k run. “We’ve got a great course this year, starting at the community center and going out of town, before coming back into town for the finish line,” said Dent Daze organizer Nicole Seifert. Immediately following the 5k run will be the children’s 1k fun run. This will be an untimed dash to the finish for children. The cost to enter the 5k is $20 and the children’s 1k fun run will be free. Next, participants can saddle up for the annual poker run. Players will run to different businesses around Dent to collect certain playing cards. Once they have the cards needed 14 | Summer Scene june 2015

Kids with newly painted faces take a second to pose for a picture while munching on sweets.

for a full hand, he or she can turn in their cards for prizes. By this time, most should have a hankerin’ for some grub. Beginning at noon will be Nootzi’s lunch special as well as the Girl Scout vendor. Hot dogs and other grilled foods will be served by the Girl Scouts along with a side. Refreshments will also be available. High noon is also the kick off time for the numerous kids’ games at Dent Daze, with most assuming a Wild West theme. In addition to the bouncy house and face painting, a tin can shootout, horseshoe toss, potato sack races and gold

treasure hunt are set to take place. A kids’ pedal pull with either a tractor or big wheel will also be on the afternoon agenda. Following the children’s activities, the crowd favorite Dent Daze parade takes place with an expected 40-50 entries. “The big top tent will also be set up for the kids’ activities for a chance to get outta the sun and into the shade if needed,” said Seifert. The infamous Dent Daze bed races will, of course, be another highlight on this Saturday in July. If there is still a rumbling in one’s

stomach, the Dent Lions will host a chicken feed by the baseball field beginning at 4 p.m. Also slated to take place at the same time by the ball field is the United Methodist pie social and silent auction. Evening activities are set to move to the Dugout Bar and Grill at their expanded outdoor space for live music. “Last year we had great weather and hope for the same this year. Weeds or wildflowers: is there a difference? Daisies fill fields and line the edges of highways in late summer. This picture was taken at Glendalough State Park.

by Lina Belar For the Focus

“A weed is a plant whose virtue has not yet been discovered.” So said Vita Sackville-West, one of England’s most famous gardeners of the last century and designer of the famous Sissinghurst Gardens in England, now a national trust. As it turns out, she was merely paraphrasing Ralph Waldo Emerson, an American poet of the 19th century. For centuries, both poets and gardeners have considered the virtues of a number of plants often referred to as weeds. A more conventional definition says weeds are simply obnoxious plants—in other words, undesired plants growing in competition with desired ones. However, the term “weed” is a relative one because many plants may be useful, beautiful or interesting in a place where they are welcome, but are considered obnoxious elsewhere. White clover, for example, is a

useful and often highly desirable plant in a lawn, but a pest in the strawberry bed. The biggest problem is when the unwanted plants interfere with the growth of a desirable plant, resulting in direct loss to a crop grower. They do so by contending for food and moisture with the crop plants growing on the same area, often reducing the yields of the crop. They sometimes provide hosts for diseases that attack related crop plants and increase the amount of labor necessary to bring cultivated plants to harvest. When allowed to grow uncontrolled, they injure the appearance and value of the property and the community. But despite this, weeds have many advantages in the right situation. They often occupy and cover ground which might otherwise be eroded. Where the land is not needed to grow commercial crops, weeds or wildflowers can add both beauty and usefulness. What’s the difference between weeds

and wildflowers? Not much. The names of many plants appear in both lists. It all depends on your point of view. Take the dandelion, for example. For many, this plant is the scourge of a beautiful lawn. My mother would give me a nickel for every dandelion I uprooted in its entirety. In the process, I developed a real respect for the plant. I learned it wasn’t as easy a job as I’d thought it would be. No matter how many I dug out, there were always more the following year. The lowly, much maligned dandelion is actually quite a useful plant. The green leaves are a good source of vitamins and minerals, the roots make a tasty coffeelike beverage, and the blossoms make delightful dandelion wine. Euell Gibbons, the writer and naturalist, wrote admiringly about the dandelion: “Early in the spring, when the first dandelions bloom, I go after the finest food the dandelion produces. I dig out the plants, open them june 2015 Summer Scene | 21

Left: Pasque flowers are one of the earliest-blooming wildflowers and usually bloom around mid-April. This clump was photographed in the ditch along Highway 78 near the Soo Line Railroad. up, and from the very center I take the tiny, tender buds that intend to develop into future blossoms. They are almost snow-white on the outside, and if one is cut open it is seen to be pale yellow inside from the developing blossom material. Just boiled a few minutes, then seasoned with salt and butter, these pale little buds make one of the most delicious vegetables I’ve ever tasted. The flavor and texture are both reminiscent of artichoke hearts.” He also adds that Dandelion buds are as far above artichoke hearts as artichokes are above turnips. Heady praise from this gourmet of weeds and wildflowers. As an added bonus, if you take his advice, you’ll have rid your lawn of the dandelions. The common blue violet (Viola sororia), one of the earliest flowers in spring, has some not-so-commonly known nutritional properties. Both the leaves and the blossoms are rich in vitamin C and the leaves are an excellent source of vitamin A. A half-cup serving of violet leaf greens will provide as much vitamin C as four average oranges. In European flower markets, many of the vendors sell bunches of violets. I thought it was a quaint, old-fashioned custom. Now that I realize their hidden value, I suspect that the custom had its origins in healthy practices. After a long, dark winter without fresh fruit or vegetables, people needed lots of vitamins C and A. Unlike many wildflowers, the violet is not harmed by picking its blossom. These showy flowers seldom produce seed anyway. Later on, down under the leaves, the plant will produce some inconspicuous blooms that have no petals and never open but which have an abundance of seeds with which to sow the next generation. Although many weeds have culinary, 22 | Summer Scene june 2015

cosmetic or medicinal uses, for some, their greatest gift is the beauty that they provide to the passing landscape. This is particularly important for people who love wildflowers but who cannot hike to see them. In early spring, marsh marigolds (Caltha palustris) are easily seen in watery ditches alongside the highways. The bright yellow blossoms are waxy looking and the leaves are rounded and glossy. Another ditch-lover is winter cress (Barbarea vulgaris). These plants grow 2’ to 3’ tall in bright colored clumps with small yellow flowers. In late June, many open fields are filled with the plant called “prairie smoke” (Geum triflorum), which blooms from late spring through early summer, bearing clusters of reddish-pink, maroon or purple flowers on stems more than a foot tall. The sepals on the flowers never open completely and bees have to force their way in to pollinate the flowers. But after pollination, the flowers become erect and the petals and sepals spread out and expose the fruit, which is a dry seed with a two-inch long feathery plume. It is this plume, which is reminiscent of smoke blowing in the wind, which gives the plant its name. Another easy wildflower to spot from the car is the prairie wild rose (Rosa arkansana). It is often found along the fence lines of open fields. This rose has clusters of pink or rosy flowers that are followed in the fall by colorful rosehips. One of my favorite roadside weeds in summer is the little birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus). This low-growing plant is covered with small yellow flowers. It drapes itself gracefully over the edges of curbs like a small hanging garden. Another plant that likes to hug the edge of the roadway are black-eyed su-

sans (Rudbeckia hirta). These bright yellow daisy-like flowers often border the highways for miles. But as delightful as it is to enjoy weeds and wildflowers from the inside of a car, a leisurely walk will bring hundreds more to your attention. That was one of the ideas behind Perham’s new wildflower trail, a dedicated walking path that currently goes from 2nd Street SW along Highway 34 south toward the new hospital where it makes a loop around the Perham Living campus before heading east on Coney street. A planned second phase of the trail would continue along to Coney Street, crossing 3rd Avenue SE to end at the Jerome Boedigheimer Park. The Perham Economic Development Authority (EDA) applied for and received a grant from the DNR for part of the trail. The DNR grant provided funds for a vendor, Prairie Restoration, to provide the right wildflower mix and also established a 5-year maintenance contract with them. EDA Director Chuck Johnson and his wife, Darla, have done some wildflower gardening and they know it can be a slow tedious process to get them established. The seeds along most of the Perham Wildflower Trail were planted in 2013 so there may be a few grown this summer. The seed mix contains species that are native to the short grass prairie biome in which Perham is situated. Look for plants such as butterfly weed, heath aster, blazingstar, wild lupine and white and purple prairie clover. They will be mixed in with a variety of grasses, including big bluestem, fringe brome, blue joint grass, Virginia wildrye and switchgrass. Once you start looking for wildflowers it’s hard to continue to think of them as mere weeds.

Fly-In and Car Show bigger and better for year two by Jason Groth jgroth@perhamfocus.com

A first-time event that exceeded organizers expectations is returning to Perham this summer, and they plan for it to be bigger and better the second time around. Plane and car enthusiasts will unite at the second annual Lakes Country Fly-In and Car Show. The second annual show will take place on Saturday, August 1 at the Perham Municipal Airport. The show is put on by Rich McCrady and Amanda Homelvig of Wings Flight Training. Homelvig and McCrady said, after the first one, they wanted to make it bigger and better. They were surprised when nearly 2,000 people attended the first show, which upended their prediction of a smaller turnout. “It has developed to spread the enthusiasm and expose people to aviation, who 24 | Summer Scene june 2015

have not been exposed to it in the past,” Homelvig said. “Fly-ins is basically people who share that passion and enthusiasm. There are events all over the country and during the good weather months over here. People fly-in in the morning, look at each other’s aircraft, there will be different vendors and there could be an air show. It’s people getting together and sharing their enthusiasm for flying.” The inaugural event featured several attractions, including a pancake feed and car show. The event showcased many aspects of the love of airplanes and cars. “It’s a bunch of people that love airplanes and a bunch of people that love cars. They get together and they show off and share their enthusiasm,” Homelvig said. “Last year we ended up with just fewer than 2,000 people. It far exceeded our expectations.” “A lot goes into it, the event is FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) approved,” Homelvig continued. “There is

a lot of technical preparation that goes into providing an air show to the public in terms of the safety of those flying and those on the ground. It turns out to be a spectacular thing and people are just wowed by it.” The 2015 show will feature several unique opportunities for fans to watch and participate. Fans of all ages came out in droves to take in the first ever Lakes Country Fly-In and Car Show. The show returns to the Perham Municipal Airport on Aug. 1.

year’s show was the activities for the kids. The event featured free face-painting as well as free airplane rides for the kids. Kids who want to fly, have to register at the event. “The kids come off wildly excited about flying and quite unique,” Homelvig said of the free airplane rides for the kids. Rides in a World War II aircraft of the Commemorative Air Force will also be available. This air force is a national organization that maintains aircraft from World War II, with a chapter based in St. Paul. They will host an exhibition as well. Also performing in the air show will be the Vanguard Squadron, a group of five out of Sioux Falls, S.D., who fly in formation. Homelvig said they are smaller aircraft that are very nimble and run on ethanol. “The things that they can do in these aircraft are just incredible,” Homelvig said. “They are flying in formation, which is particularly dangerous and takes particular skill and practice. That’s all done to music. All of that is really incredible.” A member of the Vanguard Squadron, David Myers, will feature a solo presentation as well as flying with the squadron. A new act to the 2015 air show will be Susan Dacy. Dacy will perform in her Super Stearman ‘Big Red.’ “She is interesting because she is a woman. There are not a lot of women in aerobatic aviation. She comes from an aerobatic family,” Homelvig said. “She just puts on a great show and we are really excited about that.” Car enthusiasts will have an opportunity to showcase their vehicles and vote on their favorites at the Hot Rod, Antique and Classic Car Show, the second half of the event. “Last year, we had 118 cars in the car show, which is really unique in the area,” McCrady said. “After surmising with a couple of individuals that are helping to 26 | Summer Scene june 2015

put it on, they are going to have a 150200 cars there this year.” The car show will award more than 20 awards, including the highly sought-after participants’ and fan favorite awards. “The interesting thing is, car people don’t just enjoy their car. They enjoy looking at other people’s cars,” McCrady said. “There are all eras and different classes of cars. We are not going to be in a class type of judging, we are going to let the public and the participants do the judging and that’s from the heart, which is pretty cool.” One of the newer events that Homelvig and McCrady are excited about for this year’s event is the newest addition of a “Care Carnival.” The Care Carnival will feature several area non-profit organizations providing carnival-style games for attendees to play. “It’s basically a Midway concept, and

they will do games and all the non-profits walk away with all that cash,” Homelvig said. “All they have to do is provide one high-profile person and they have to go into the dunk tank. The proceeds from the dunk tank will go to one of the nonprofits, which will be raffled off.” In addition to the Masons’ pancake feed, concessions will be provided by Goose Gang, The Cactus, Ole and Lena’s Pizzeria. “The biggest challenge is not making it totally like last year and having people be excited,” McCrady said. “It’s amazing, after the event last year, we received heralded reviews. The constructive criticism that we got from last year was that it would have been nice to have more concessions and we listened to that.” McCrady and Homelvig said the goal is to make the event welcoming to everyone, while increasing public interest in aviation and the car show.

“We are just trying to make it publicfriendly. This is a community endeavor and a community activity,” McCrady said. “As long as the community applauds it, enjoys it and walks away saying ‘I really liked that,’ we are OK with providing it.” The event features a full day of activities, starting with the pancake breakfast at 7:30 a.m. The car show is set to begin at 9 a.m., while the free airplane rides for

kids will start at 9:30 a.m. Face-painting and the Care Carnival will open at 9 a.m. as well. The air show is slated to begin at noon, and at 1:30 p.m. will be when the car show awards are announced. Homelvig and McCrady have already made several big announcements, but they say a few more are expected to be made leading up to August. “We will have much more to be an-

nounced,” Homelvig said. “We are working on some additional attractions from the car standpoint and the air show standpoint, which could potentially be very big. We will announce those as they are confirmed.” For more information on the 2015 Lakes Country Fly In and Car Show, visit www.wingsflighttraining.net.
