Owned and operated by Mark Disse, the business began with Disse cleaning cars at his grandfather’s home at the age of 18. He purchased his first twocar garage at age 20 and quickly grew the business.

Maggie Schmit, a local native from Detroit Lakes, opened Magnolia’s Family Hair Design in May of 1996 in downtown Detroit Lakes. After two years, she located to the former Thomas grocery on the north side of Washington Avenue where Magnolia’s remained for over 20 years until her current relocation to 601 Washington Ave.

Starting as a two-person salon, Magnolia’s has grown with 10 independent con tractors offering a variety of services including hair, massage therapy and eyelash extensions. Maggie’s oldest daughter, Josie Schermerhorn, graduated from the Salon Professional Academy in July 2016.

Josie joined Magnolia’s in May 2017, where she specializes in eyelash extensions. She has perfected her talent and has enjoyed building her clientele over the years. Schiller’s House opened in January

Full-service men’s haircuts include a shampoo in a massage chair, scalp massage, hot towel treatment and waxing. Beard trims and boy’s haircuts are also a specialty.

Since opening, the number of clients at both locations has continued to grow. Schiller’s House now features owner Katie Schiller plus three other stylists.

A longstanding and beloved summer tradition in Detroit Lakes, the Northwest Water Carnival celebrated its 86th season in 2022.

Typically a 10-day event, the Water Carnival is a celebration of the Lakes Area’s finest feature -- water. The many games, competitions and other events that are always a part of the Water Carnival all feature water in some way, with most taking place on the water, in the water, or right next to it, on the City Beach.

Those who partake in a Water Carnival event can expect to get wet, at least a little. Even the pinnacle Parade of the Northwest has water as a central feature, with squirt guns and water balloons frequently aimed at both participants and paradegoers.

The Water Carnival is organized by the Detroit Lakes Jaycees, a nonprofit group of young individ uals working to benefit the community.

“We try to put on as many events as possible to engage the community, which, therefore, allows us to use any money for a variety of services which are used to help families in need, fund schol arships, provide free events for the community to enjoy, etc.,” says Kate Spaeth, former President of the Jaycees. “This event is a true testament to how devoted our members are. They will give all they have to make sure that everyone has a wonderful time, even though the 10 days will bring us all to an understandable state of exhaustion. I am very proud of all of our members volunteering their time and taking pride in what they do.”

The Jaycees have heard great things from the public about the Water Carnival, with some people planning their summer vacations around it because it’s become such a tradition for them.

Also known as the “Off Duty Chief,” per former Tim Eggebraaten was a police offi cer for the Detroit Lakes Police Department for nearly 25 years and spent his final 5 ½ years as Chief of Police before retiring in 2016.

He began professionally performing as a one-person band in 2003, though he’s been singing his whole life and playing guitar for more than 30 years.

At first, Eggebraaten played occasional night and weekend gigs as a hobby. But later, he was booked up for shows all over the region and became one of Detroit Lakes’ most well-known and beloved performers.

Today, Eggebraaten is focusing on professional motivational and inspirational speaking, combining his music with stories and life lessons to help others find their “Rhythm of Life.” He says his love of entertaining will keep him on community stages as the “Off Duty Chief” for as long as he can do it.

Audiences say Eggebraaten’s shows are “unique, personal, authentic, fun, energetic, funny,” and more. The variety of music he plays appeals to many different age groups and musical tastes. He often ad-libs and injects lyrics about people or situations happening in real-time. The result is a fun atmosphere and an enjoyable show.

Under the leadership of Executive Director Anna Sellin, the staff of 27 assists individuals and families who are affected by domestic violence, sexual assault and general crime situations. Crime victims’ services are free and confidential.

The resource center provides counseling and support to help victims identify and assert their rights, navigate the criminal justice system and locate and obtain any other ser vices they may need to ease the impact of their victimization.

The center offers a 24-hour crisis hotline, makes personal advocacy and counseling referrals and offers support groups for children dealing with abuse, divorce, foster care, anger management and other high-risk situations. It also provides assistance with harassment restraining orders and orders for protection.

The team at Lakes Crisis is tight-knit and works together to ensure they’re meeting clients wherever they are in that moment, emotionally and physically.

Client feedback is consistently positive, with evaluations revealing that clients feel heard, validated and have a better

understanding of what to expect and how to move forward after visiting the center. Many report an increased sense of safety as well.

“I’m grateful for the guidance on what to do to protect myself and my children,” a recent client stated in an evalua tion. “The support system here and the people have saved my life and my children’s.”
